Review for the newer model     On: 2010-07-27

I dont know what is going on with Amazon. The photos at the top show two different models. PUR did in fact come out with a newer model so I am not sure if THIS particular model is the new one or the old one, even though the description in the product details shows the newer model. It is also not fair to have over 200 reviews for the older model if the item is newer. My review is for the newer model.

The filter works so much better. I, too, like many reviewers, had my first filter for years and years back in the 90s. Recently, I have had no luck. Then, I happened to find this at a local discount retail store before PUR even updated their website, and I am glad to say I did not give up on PUR filters. The newer model allows the filter to simply "sit" in the mount. It creates no pressure inside when the water runs through it while its closed so the crack does not seem to appear. The switch for the filter water is a tad flimsy, but be gentle with it and you should be all right. I am happy to be able to continue filtering water with PUR because I do believe their filters do a good job making water taste better with less to no contaminants.
broke within a year!!!     On: 2010-07-27

I bought this pur filter last November for my kitchen and today the part where the water come out just shoot out while I was washing dishes. I first thought it was loose but after a closer look the plasting that hold them together broke. Althought this is cheap but I expect it to be construct to last longer, DO NOT RECOMMAND this product.
Works Great!     On: 2010-07-26

Our first Pur faucet mount lasted nearly two years. We are on well water so the build up of minerals caused us to get a new Pur. We selected this one but it was the screw on variety and weve had absolutely NO issues with this filter set up. Where the last one had minor leaks this one has been rock solid...not a drop...and its been 3 months of hard use.

I do wonder if water pressure IS an issue. First, a house on well water will have much lower water pressure...municipal water pressure is MUCH stronger...to us its like a fire hose...and second, (and this is important), the filter will only dispense water at a certain rate no matter how much you increase the water pressure. If you add these two factors together I can understand where this connection can be overwhelmed with pressure and leaks will sprout.

My advice for municipal users with high water pressure is to use the filter with only partial pressure. Turn on the water lightly and THEN flip up the Pur upon first use...if you blow it out with water pressure Im not sure you can get it back. Again, it only dispenses at a certain rate no matter how much water pressure is behind it...so...be gentle...if youve never experienced well water pressure youd be surprised at how low it is...so...again...be GENTLE...youll get the highest rate of flow this filter was meant to produce with very little pressure.

This is one of the few times I dont envy people with high water pressure...this pur has been great for us.
How to work around mean old P&G and enjoy your great filter     On: 2010-07-22

PUR Water Filter Review \\ Hack

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called planned obsolescence whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didnt used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called timed death whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking no for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. Youve cheated no one. P&Gs cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! Youre done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. Youll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldnt be without them. Its P&Gs customer abuse thats not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.
Useless - Will NOT stay mounted on sink     On: 2010-07-16

I bought this water filter and was thrilled with it at first - it was easy to mount to my kitchen faucet and it filtered the water well - great taste and everything.

HOWEVER, within 2 weeks it started popping off the faucet every time the water was turned on. I used their mounting hardware that they included and it just doesnt work for long - the filter will not stay attached to the piece that screws into the faucet.

So, I got 2 weeks use out of this and thats it. While this is an inexpensive filter compared to some others, only getting two weeks of use out of it makes it a VERY EXPENSIVE and frustrating filter.

The whole thing is very poorly designed, as you can see from the other reviews.

Save yourself some heartache and buy a different filter.
all plastic product of 2010 Pur 3-Stage water filter     On: 2010-07-14

new designe with all plastic parts that does not hold filter tight. when water turn on whole filter just come off since it just snap in installation. old one use to come with all matel parts and last longer too.
May have found the solution     On: 2010-07-07

I too have gone through about four Pur faucet mounted water filters of different designs. All of which developed cracks and leaks over a period of time.

Thinking it was for the most part, my fault as I just seem to be hard on items then the average person.

I may have found the cause as to why faucet mounted water filters leak. Most of us turn the water on full blast then activate the filter.

Try instead to turn the filter on first then slowly turn the faucet on until the maximum amount of water is flowing out of the filter. Do not increase the water flow past the point of water flow out of the filter. I believe it is the build up of water pressure that causes these filters to leak.
Add my voice to negative reviews     On: 2010-07-07

Just want to add that the quality of this filter has gone downhill. The original one we owned lasted for several years, but the last two models barely 6 months. And what breaks down is exactly what you see in the pictures, which plainly signals a manufacturing defect across the line: the chome cover on the faucet mount will come unglued and then the plastic window showing filter life will spring a leak and spray all over you.
Look elsewhere. Save yourself the hassle.
The only reason we keep buying them is a huge stockpile of the filters we purchased back when we got the original faucet mount. who would have thought...
PUR BEATS BRITA ANYDAY!     On: 2010-07-06

I have purchased SEVERAL Brita Faucet filters...they all ended up slipping off the faucet (the screw- on part wears out). I finally tried the Pur, and am thrilled with the attachment to the faucet! I have had absolutely NO problems with the device, and my tap water tastes GREAT! I started with the 2 Phase, but have switched to the 3 Phase. PUR makes a superb devise attachment to the faucet that STAYS PUT. Plus you can remove the device by pushing on 2 buttons to remove it when you need the space for large pots/pans/plates to wash. Then it easily pops right back on! After years of fighting with the Brita, I will never go back!
Much improved product!     On: 2010-06-28

Just received the new and improved PUR 3-stage faucet mount filter and so far so good (has only been a week). The new snap-on installation is a vast improvement over the past as no more trying to tighten it with pliers and cracking the unit! It was so easy to install that I was sure it wouldnt work properly when I turned on the H2O, but surprise, it works beautifully! Now the big test will be whether it will begin to leak within a few months like past filters. Stay tuned......
As functional as expected     On: 2010-06-28

Having this option allows the removal of the picture from the fridge. I was surprised
the attaching pieces are made of plastic.
Wear a raincoat!     On: 2010-06-24

If you dont mind taking a shower while filtering water, this product is great. The water actually tastes great. The problem is that it sprays water out of the filter indicator. It worked fine for a few months, then kaboom! Id stick with pitcher for now. The filters a great. The problem is the faucet mount.
Redesigned to snap onto the facuet, works great     On: 2010-06-24

On an average, all my previous filters lasted for about 6 months, but the newest, redesigned PUR filter which snaps onto the facuet looks very promising and no complaints so far. Great, I luv it.
Started leaking in less than two months     On: 2010-06-22

About three years ago, I bought a Pur faucet unit and was very pleased with it... so much so that I bought a four-pack of replacement filters before I moved a year ago. When I moved, I decided to buy a new Pur faucet unit since the old one had become calcified. Within six months, the new faucet unit had started to leak from every seam of the unit: the edges of the meter window, the faucet seal, the seal around the cap, and the joint that joins the main body to the faucet attachment. Everywhere. The volume of water coming out of the sides was at least equal to the volume coming out of the filter spout, if not more. Since I was still stuck with three more replacement filters, I foolishly decided to buy another Pur faucet unit. Big mistake. This one started leaking within TWO months, however this leak isnt a general gushing from the sides like the last unit. This leak is a shooting, high pressure stream that comes straight at you from the meter window. To use the filter you have to cover the entire window with your hand, or you get soaked. Now, I am stuck with two more replacement filters and wet shirts. Thanks Pur.

In short, do anything you can to avoid buying this product. Your tap water cant be that bad.
Leaking like water gun     On: 2010-06-21

after couple of months, it leaks really bad. water comes out of the indicator window and comes down joining the filtered water. what you get in your cup is half clean water and half leaking water. things are getting worse: the leak has become a water gun and shoot right onto your chest... Do not recommend this product...
Appeal to PR/Proctor & Gamble to fix your product     On: 2010-06-19

I am on my fourth vertical PR faucet, and my story is similar to the litany posted before me... unparalleled filter performance, but shoddy hardware. Our first one purchased years ago was white and nearly indestructible (until we wrecked it with a heavy saucepan). Every successive unit purchased, whether white or "chrome," has been a study in accelerated failure.

PR/Proctor & Gamble:
Why not fix the problem? The filters proven to be better than anyone elses -- so please fix the hardware, and customers will come flocking to your door!!!
product not as pictured     On: 2010-06-16

The product that was shipped to us is not the version that is pictured here, but the new version with a flip tab and an electronic monitor. There are no reviews available of the new version, as Amazon doesnt explicitly sell it, so no way of knowing about leaks or failures of the electronic component.
Best filter, for the money. Period.     On: 2010-06-15

This is the best filter I have ever used. Period. I wore out my first one, which was beginning to leak ...after delivering several hundred gallons. I had to try a couple others, beforehand, and regret it.

I tried a Brita ...but it kept blowing off the faucet --even with the adapters, they sent, when I called their helpline.

I then got a Culligan, and, the water came out in a drizzle that could be shut off, with one finger held over the outlet ...though the water pressure is 30+ psi. The Cullgan filter is advertised to deliver far more water than PUR, but it lasted two months, rather than the four month average the PUR filters had been lasting (over the previous 2 - 2.5 years).

I finally ordered another PUR, and am very satisfied, once more.

As for the Brita... I returned, it. The Culligan will doubtless end up in a landfill, somewhere, since I can no longer return, it.
Pitiful     On: 2010-06-09

Bought one and it cracked open and started spraying all over the kitchen. Since I invested in several replacment filters I bought another one. It did the same thing. Obviously this thing is junk. When it worked it did a good job of purifying the water. Unless I can get another one for free, I will not buy another.
SHORT TIME     On: 2010-06-07

This filter says it lasts up to 100 Gallons (2-3 months). It lasts only 2 1/2 weeks. The water just drips out. I dont think I drank a 100 gallons of water in that time period.
Good product, looks nice, stays on the faucet     On: 2010-06-06

I had another brand of faucet filter and when the filter got close to being full, it kept falling off the faucet. I switched back to Pur (had used it before, bought the other brand because filters were less expensive) and it mounts very securely on the faucet, filters are larger so they will last longer and it looks nice. I do think filters on a faucet are bulky and in the way sometimes but I want filtered water so this is the best one Ive used yet out of three different ones.
Waste of money     On: 2010-06-05

These filters are the pits. They leak from numerous places, the indicators that are supposed to tell you how long the cartidge will last are useless, and the chrome model sheds parts. Ive had two of these filters and they were both nightmares. Avoid!
You Don't Want This!!     On: 2010-06-04

Purchased first one a year ago along with a 12 pack of filter replacements. The end cap fell off and it leaked like a sieve. I made the mistake of not reading the reviews before purchase. Am now on my 3rd - its a genuine hunk of leaky garbage just like the first two and I cannot wait until these expensive filters are used up so I can try another method. You dont want this Pur Faucet Water Filter unless youre a big fan of frustration.
Wrong model shown, new model works just fine!     On: 2010-06-02

The picture on Amazon for this product shows the old model which attaches to one side of the faucet. The actual product can swivel on either side of the faucet and is a superior design (though inferior materials). Im not sure if the other reviews are for the item pictured or the actual item that Amazon is shipping now (confusing). We received the new swivel design faucet, and it works absolutely fine - no leaks like almost all other reviewers have mentioned. The item comes with 3 rubber washers of different sizes, 1 of them fit our faucet perfectly. Extremely easy to install and it works as expected. I for one would recommend this product.
Wrong Model Pictured     On: 2010-05-25

The photo for this item is wrong (May 2010). It shows the old swiveling model, which is far sturdier than the current "space saving" model. The new model, as you can see from the other reviews, is not rated very highly. Thinking I would get the old solid one pictured, I ordered. Unfortunately, I received the flimsy new one. I should have checked the part numbers--Amazon gives the correct part number for the new model, but pictures the old model. Confusing. I considered returning it, but too much hassle, plus Id have to pay postage. So I went ahead and installed the new model. Hopefully it will last until Ive used up my stock of Pur filters, but Im not optimistic. This new one wiggles on the faucet, and tends to drip out of the filter side. The plastic lever which switches it from unfiltered flow to filtered flow does not feel as if it will hold up for long. Time will tell.
Junk     On: 2010-05-21

I will make this short and sweet. I purchased one of these filters. After a few months, a crack appeared near the indicator(just like all the other reviews). I dealt with it for a couple more weeks until more cracks appears on the left side of the filter. The first crack I could deal with, it was only a small spray. The second and third were another story. I decided to toss it and not even deal with replacement/warranty. I will be going with brita jug filters for now on. If I could give this a 0/5 stars, I would.
Faucet waster mount leaks.     On: 2010-05-17

I did not even get 4 months into this filter before it started to leak around the indicator on top. I thought by replacing the filter it would help, but just made it worse. I really wish I would have seen these reviews before wasting my money on this filter. Now I am stuck with a bunch of PUR replacement filters I hope I can return. Pur and simple this Pur filter is GARBAGE! Although, water did taste better, this is the only reason I gave it two stars and not one.
Cracked in less than a year     On: 2010-05-17

I bought my pur Filter some 3 or so years ago at a local retailer.

Within a year a crack developed at the filter indicator window.

Once it started leaking I epoxied it after sanding the area to
get the glue to stick better. That worked okay for about another
six months when the cracks became longer.

Id rate it a 4 for filter effectiveness as that works.

However it is obvious PUR is still selling this defective
garbage to unsuspecting public. FOr that, it deserves a 1 at best.

Culligan looks good. Yeah, it isnt at faucet however the cartridges
are sure a lot less expensive and Im going to gamble it wont just crack due
to piss poor product design and production quality.

New Model Falls off Faucet after a Few Weeks     On: 2010-05-16

The model shown ofn the picture has been discontinued. The new model is poorly designed and lasts only a few weeks before it collapses.
I owned at least five of these filters over the years; they usually lasted at least one year, although they always tended to soon start leaking around the ring that screws to the faucet. The new system seemed improved at first,(it was easier to install) but after a few weeks the plastic ring that holds it could not sustain the normal flow of the water coming down, and became stripped, causing the whole unit to fall down. Customer service has been helpful, repeatedly sending me replacement rings, but they all last only a few weeks. Too bad, because the filter insert did a decent job of removing the chlorine taste from the water.
Be sure to get the new designed model     On: 2010-03-31

Pur has come out with a new design for both the vertical and horizontal models. I purchased a replacement from a local retailer since I had a nice sized coupon to use. The new vertical model I purchased has several well thought-out changes. The vertical piece doesnt rotate, there is a small lever on the right of the faucet that flips down to turn on the filtered water. The new mounting for the faucet had the unit just snap onto the mounting. That way the unit just clicks off to change the filter. Also, where the regular non-filtered water comes out you cannot attach a swivel unit. That was the cause of most of my problems with my prior Pur units. In using the swivel unit over time, the stress on the mounting of the Pur unit would cause it to leak there. Since you now cannot mount anything on the bottom of the unit where regular water comes out there is no stress on the faucet mounting. Time will tell if there are any weak areas in the new design but for now Pur has addressed the earlier design problems.
Absolutely PUR Crap!     On: 2010-03-25

I purchased this unit and within the first 5 minutes of use it started leaking from the seams. Water leaked from nearly every seam and connection. The plastic felt cheap and the build quality was poor at best. I thought it was a lemon and replaced the unit only to have the same exact leaking problems. Take my advice, this isnt worth the money.
Great filtered water, but the housing is expendible     On: 2010-03-23

We are on our third PUR vertical faucet unit in two years. The filters work great, but the housing is expendible -- it will last three to five filter cycles before something on it breaks. Very easy to replace! Just have to accept that like the filters, the faucet mount housing is also a replaceable item.

Believe everything you read     On: 2010-03-22

My wife and I read many reviews on this faucet system and decided that the price is right. We read the warnings about pieces falling off and other problems. We went ahead and bought it. Those warnings were all true. We bought this within the last 7 months and within 3 months the decorative chrome plate at the faucet fell off. Just last week a crack developed where the PUR device connects to the kitchen faucet and it sprays water everywhere. I was happy with the filtered water but I will not buy this product again. In fact I doubt I would buy any PUR product again. My reasoning for this is that these reviews were over time and PUR has done nothing to fix the problems. We just bought a new fridge and it had a water filter and despenser built in (Inside not on the door) and it works just as well. If you buy PUR you are paying for a name not for a quality product.
Faulty Device. No good.     On: 2010-03-20

I bought one of these and it developed a crack around the indicator. I returned it (I bought it wal-mart) and amazingly enough inside the box was another busted unit. I had to go back to the isle and get another. Wouldnt you know, this one has cracked, too. I noticed it tonight which prompted me to come here and write a review. Im very disappointed in these.
Cracktastic Product     On: 2010-03-11

I replaced my old filter housing which I had used for over a year (and I got it used, supposedly 3 yrs old) which worked great before failing at the faucet mount.

This *new* filter housing failed after just 2 months! Right at the filter window. What a piece of junk. Of course, I already invested in the additional filters so Ive got some for sale if you want them. Im replacing this entire unit.

Dont waste your money on what looks like a good deal.
I've never had a problem     On: 2010-03-10

with this product. Ive had mine for two months now and I had one before and was a little hesitant to get another one because of all the negative reviews. But got another one anyway. Ive not had any problems. Works great. Water tastes great. Maybe every one else had problems because they needed to use an adapter where I didnt. No idea, but Im very satisfied.
Works well, produces quality tasting water, no cracks.     On: 2010-03-05

This is my first water filter. The quality is there. Keep it chilled in the fridge and its some of the best tasting water Ive had. Its well worth the money, everyone should have one of these. The taste and gallon/price ratio makes it worth it alone. Also, who knows what is leaking into your city/well water. Makes coffee taste great too. I have been using it for almost a year and it hasnt developed any cracks like others have had. I have the black 3-stage one pictured here.

Heres a trick that they probably dont want you to know about.. When your filter stops working, it isnt because the filter itself stopped working. Its because the mechanism inside the filter housing has clicked all the way over and stopped the water flow. If you think your water still tastes good and it probably did right before it stopped flowing on you.. Simply remove the filter like you were going to install a new one.. and the mechanism in the housing resets, then reinstall the filter.

Now you can extend the filter until you wish to replace it. I would recommend replacing it eventually though.

I recommend it.
PUR JUNK     On: 2010-03-04

It is a GREAT product if you dont mind buying the spigot unit every 6 months. As one reviewer stated..
ONE STAR ONLY..simply because they seem to not care about how purly awful a design flaw that is
being left in the unit..seems almost to be on PURpose.
PUR 3-Stage Water Mount Filters     On: 2010-03-02

Unfortunately, the filters DO NOT last as long as PUR states. It is suppose to last approximately 3 months or about 100 gallons. I am the only person using this product and only use it for drinking water and making a pot of coffee. The unit does not last as long as the manufacturer states. They need to re-think their advertising.
needs better sealing, cracks and leaks everywhere!     On: 2010-02-15

positive:
+ Usage meter seemed to work well (clear when filter is new, gradually filling an orange bar when time to replace)
+ Cheaper than bottled water (but taste not nearly as good)

negative:
- Filters slowly
- Sprouted hairline cracks and leaks in less than a month
- Not much difference in taste vs plain unfiltered tap water
- Hot water is like kryptonite to the filter, i.e. completely ruins it

bottom line:
Relatively low cost option for (supposedly) clean(er) water, but the cracks and leaks make me want to look at other options.
Lasts about a year     On: 2010-02-10

This filter worked well for me for about a year. After that, leaks started to happen. The leaks just get bigger over time. I guess it is part of the companies obsolescence replacement strategy to make money?

5 replacements-all broke     On: 2010-02-03

Buyer beware! Theoretically the product sounds good. But when cracks developed within a couple months and water leaked/squirted out, we bought another one. We figured it was a fluke. We had not saved our packaging and receipt, so we could not get a replacement. (So be sure to save your package box and receipt, you will need them.) When the 2nd one broke too (more cracks, different place on the housing) we got a replacement (#3) that cost a little more from the store where we bought it. The replacement leaked right away and the lights stopped working. We thought maybe that model was inferior. We got another, more expensive model for our 4th replacement. It lasted 2 months then leaked, and the handle (on/off switch) broke as well. The leaks are in different areas, so I cannot say that there is only one problem area in these units. If hot water gets into the filter housing, your filter will be damaged. Now youve got a faucet-mount that leaks and your filter needs to be replaced too. In the 4th model we got that was more expensive -- the chrome plastic was flimsy, inferior to the cheaper model we had in white! Our attempts to contact Pur customer service got no answer. I am amazed we didnt give up yet; we thought the chrome plastic might have been the problem. We tried a 5th Pur faucet product, another white one, but then we started having trouble with our sink plumbing. Management sent a plumber and I took the filter off for the repair work. After the sink was fixed I left the Pur off for 2 months. Everything worked fine without the filter. I finally tried hooking up the Pur today and immediately there are 2 problems, 1 problem with hot water leaking into the Pur filter housing when the unit is "off", and the other problem is water leaking from the faucet when the Pur is supposed to be in the "on" position (when water should be completely diverted into the filter). The unit is installed "correctly" but these problems persist. I did a web search for Pur complaints and find there are years of complaints. Unfortunately it appears the Pur company owner (Proctor & Gamble) does not pay any attention to making their product work correctly. We will be lodging a complaint letter with the Better Business Bureau and ConsumerAffairs dot com. In my opinion a company should not be allowed to continue selling faulty merchandise to the public.
Never going back to these faucet-mount filters     On: 2010-02-01

I believe we have gone through no fewer than 5 PUR faucet-mount filter systems in the past 9 years. The 3-stage vertical product is our latest and last attempt to live with PUR filters. As with all of the leaky PUR filters we had gone through previously, this one suddenly developed a crack for no apparent reason. Now, I cant use the filter without water shooting from both the front (near the filter replacement gauge sight-glass) and the back.

Its nice if I ever want to pour a glass of water and wash a stain from the front of my shirt at the same time, but its rather inconvenient otherwise.

I am installing an under-sink filtration system and will never be conned into buying a PUR faucet-mount system again.
Poor Quality Killing the Pur Brand     On: 2010-01-29

Shoddy quality in the last few years has caused leaks, small cracks & spraying of my last 3 Pur Faucet Mounted Systems.
The filters are great, the housing that attaches to the faucet which holds the filter have become junk. They last for six months or so and then start leaking, cracking and spraying everywhere.

Have had to ask P&G to replace twice in the last 12 months alone and am ready to look for an alternative. Too bad, Ive been a Pur customer since before it was acquired by P&G. Quality has gone down hill steadily since, but the price hasnt. Their customer service response says they are surprised to hear of the quality issues. Obviously, from the other posters I see here, it really isnt a surprise to anyone. If I were P&G, I would be feverishly looking to fix the quality issues pronto before the Pur brand loses all its loyal customers.
Great Tasting Water, But Needs to be Replaced Every 6mo     On: 2010-01-29

Im not really adding much to the conversation here: they break. They start leaking at about 6 months and the only thing you can do is buy a new one. BUT! I think I just tracked down their phone number (which is not listed on their website). Maybe if people keep calling and complaining theyll do something about it. The office is closed as I type this, but I intend to try tomorrow during business hours. 800-787-5463
Better tasting water     On: 2010-01-29

This is my third faucet filter from Pur. This unit replaces one identical to it that lasted about five years. It is the easiest way to enjoy better tasting and filtered water. The filter elements are simple and fast to replace and overall the most economical way to enjoy filtered drinking water.
Cracked in the glass, very common issue     On: 2010-01-25

I have had this filter system for over a year and it has gradually developed a crack in the glass. It starts in the beginning by dripping and you ignore it. You can not ignore it when it starts to spray you!
It seems to be a very common issue. see this consumer web site for others who have had this issue. Dont buy this filter system! [...]
Cracks, cracks     On: 2010-01-12

The filter worked very well in comparison to another PUR model - the horizontal one, which always fail and leak at the connector. I was satisfied until my wife showed me leaks through few cracks on the housing. I originally thought I tightened it too much when I replaced the filter unit. But then I found there are tons of people having exactly same problem. Obviously it is a faulty product and I am currently trying to find where to report.
If you would, please let me know where to report the complaint.
breaks quickly     On: 2010-01-10

Ive had 2 in one year. They develop hairline cracks that leak. I "gorilla-glued" the second, which worked for 2 months, until another crack developed and water starting running through both faucet and filter.
Awful awful quality     On: 2010-01-10

Do not buy this filter. The quality is so bad you cannot even believe it. I have used four of these and all of them cracked in the window after the first 3 months. I am tired of renewing the whole unit everytime I need to change a cartridge. It is not worth it...
My first 1-star review     On: 2010-01-08

This thing fell apart after less than a year of use. First, it developed a leak where it mounts to the faucet. That happened at around 3-4 months of usage. Then, the chrome colored bottom piece where the water comes out fell off, so it was chrome finish on top and black on the bottom. That happened at about 4-5 months. Then, it simultaneously developed a much larger crack where the filter rotates and two pin-sized holes on the visual indicator window, so water would spray everywhere when I turned the filter on and even when I wasnt using the filter. That happened at around 6 months rendering this p.o.s. completely useless. It was as if it had been run over by an 18 wheeler, not just sitting on my sink. This could possibly be the worst product I may have ever purchased. Check my other reviews, I can usually find something good to say about a product, but I am completely dissatisfied with this one. I would not recommend this product to anyone, ever.
Great idea, very poor durability.     On: 2010-01-08

This seems to be such a good idea, and oh so practical. However, there are some serious drawbacks. Primarily, the fact that they just dont last.

I have gone through a couple of these simply because of the fact that they start cracking and leaking everywhere. The last thing I want when I am half asleep and trying to get a glass of water is be sprayed in the face by the Pur filter like some misbehaving errant dog. They really need to reconsider the design as the casing is just too weak to make it a good proposition. Avoid.
I absolutely hate it.     On: 2010-01-05

For the entire year that Ive owned this thing Ive tried to limp it along. After a month it developed a lateral leak from the aerator. After replacing o-rings and buying a new aerator I enjoyed it for some time. However it recently developed a crack in the filter-usage indicator window and now sprays down the kitchen.
Filters well, but low quality control in recent years     On: 2010-01-05

Like a previous reviewer, I had a PUR filter on my sink for 5-6 years without issue. When I accidentally broke it during a move, I simply bought a replacement of the most similar model. Within a year, the ubiquitous hairline cracks appeared, either dripping or spraying water whenever the filter is being used. I dont hold out much hope that my luck will change, so Im planning to contact P&G to find out when/if this problem will be resolved. I hope to be able to post a 5-star review soon, which is what I would have given the original filter I owned (no longer sold).
Waste of money     On: 2010-01-02

It broke in about 3 weeks. The part where the unfiltered sink water comes out broke first and now water shoots everywhere. Then the silver round part where filtered water comes out fell off. This all happened half way thru the first filter. Im not spending $30 on a new filter, Im ditching this piece of crap and trying the brita sink filter instead
3 Times for Pur and Does Work!     On: 2009-12-14

Ok...the plastic housing is cheap and cracks. I have bought 5 of this very model. Big Deal. They last about a year before the cracks start forming...but I have had the water tested, and they DO WHAT THEY CLAIM...excellent filtration. If $30 a year is the cost for chemically clean water, ok...where do I sign? On the up side, if PUR would build a higher class model, that could live through chlorine (that is what is cracking the plastic)...then I would spend the $55 to buy that model, instead...as it is...ante up for the $30 and dont complain...imagine how much the bottled stuff at the store is. OR...you could always buy a refrigerator tank, to tie up space, leak in the floor, spill on the counter...well, you get the idea.
hairline cracks     On: 2009-12-09

Ive bought a pur filter years ago, and never had a problem. Ive bought three in the past year. One broke at the valve where it mounts on the faucet, and the other two developed hairline cracks on the body of the unit within a month or two. I guess the quality has gone down quite a bit. I highly recommend you buy another brand.
Poor Construction     On: 2009-12-08

Ive been through 2 since July. The first one started developing hairline cracks after a few months, and the one I have now is starting to crack as well. The cracks are smaller this time, and I managed to patch them up with crazy glue. Well see how long it lasts. Once this one goes Ill never buy a Pur filter again.
Last Pur I will ever buy     On: 2009-12-08

This is my second one of these. The first had such a low flow of filtered water I got tired of waiting 10 minutes to fill a glass, so I took it off after about 5 filter changes. My current unit (different city) sprung a leak in the usage indicator window (which never worked no matter how long i used a filter). Now, water either snakes down the side of the thing and back into my glass, defeating the purpose of a filter, or it shoots out, spraying whoever is using it.

Aside from that, it doesnt seat very firmly, so youll have to tighten the fitting about twice a week. Lastly, a piece over the faucet fell off. I slide it back on, but it comes off eventually on its own again.

This things junk. The filters are expensive and hard to find unless you order online in large quantities.
Great expectations, faulty execution.     On: 2009-12-08

When it worked, it was great, with good tasting water. Unfortunately it started leaking some two months afterwards (and this is the second faucet we bought). It must be so poorly engineered that it was probably designed either by the Army Corps of Engineers, or a family member of a P&G bigwig. When using this defective leaking faucet, you end up mixing unfiltered water (as it dribbles or shoots form the side) with the filtered, defeating the purpose of the product (unless the sole purpose is for P&G to make money from this system). I suggest that PUR should set up a recall area on their website for the faucets and/or take back unused filters from customers that have been affected. The reviews on Amazon show a common thread.
Horrible build quality     On: 2009-11-30

This is a review for the faucet system, not the filter. The filters are excellent but this particular faucet system has horrible build quality. I have been using this for 3+ years and finally gave up on them. Since you twist the WHOLE filter and not just a knob like in other systems, it is bound to produce leaks and cracks. My last 5 filters have all been P&G replacements, and they are quick to send a replacement coupon.

The only good reason i can think of with these are that there is a nice red bar for filter life indicator which is really a Gallon counter and has nothing to do with actually measuring the life of the filter. If you open the filter system and take out the filter and put it back in halfway through the filter life, it will reset the status bar (you should have a good reason to do so! )
good product     On: 2009-11-14

Had been using the Brita for years. And each year the Faucet Mount part would leak/break. Hoping this lasts much longer as Ive bought 6 filters to go with it. So far its been great.
Leaks after two months     On: 2009-11-13

Ive used this filter regularly for three months and its now leaking very heavily. It has nothing to do with the actual mounting on the faucet or where you insert and close the filter, both of these are tightly sealed. The problem is with the small, narrow window that indicates how long until you need to change the filter (its the little horizontal window that is on the top of the filter in the photo). This window cracked on its own (I havent knocked it with dishes in the sink or damaged it in any way) and this crack just grew larger and the faucet became leakier. I wish this filter wasnt so shoddy since it makes tap water taste great and its decently priced. Get a Culligan filter instead.
I would give this a zero if I could....SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!     On: 2009-11-12

I would give this a zero if I could. I have not had it a month, and I noticed water dripping from the back of the nozzle attachment on the faucet, so I tried to take it off and adjust it. Now the screw on attachment wont even turn, so I cant even put it back on the facucet. There is no way I could use pliers or a wrench to force it loose, as it is plastic and would surely break. I have had it all of three weeks, so I am going to try to return it to the store and look for another type of water filter; possibly another pitcher type.
Good price!     On: 2009-11-11

I had done some research on faucet mounted filters and this seemed to be the one! I priced them at different stores retail and online and Amazon had the best deal! I just got it but already my water looks clearer. It was simple to install and looks good! I love Amazon!
Another piece of junk by Pur     On: 2009-11-09

Like others, this is not my first Pur faucet-mount, but I thought this one would not crack like the others. WRONG! I have now completely given up on Pur: they all break far too quickly. Try a Brita water pitcher - thats what I now use.
Very Satisfying Product     On: 2009-10-30

This filter is performing flawlessly and looks great attached to my kitchen faucet. Definitely a good buy!
Filter cracks after a month of use     On: 2009-10-29

Bought this product after using an older version of Pur assuming this would also work fine. I was very happy when it attached to my faucet without any additional hardware. However, after one month of use my wife noticed a small crack behind the filtration unit. We continued to use it running water under low pressure while looking for a better model. Now the crack has widened significantly and we have a mini water fountain flowing in to our living room when unsuspected guests try to get a sip of water. Planning to get a pitcher dispenser to avoid this nonsense.
Works well.     On: 2009-10-26

I love this item. I use it multiple times daily. My only complaint is that the last one I owned only lasted for 18months before it became loose and leaked water.
Can't judge a filter by it's looks.     On: 2009-10-25

I have been a Pur faucet filter user for years. I had the older version white one for years with no problems. I decided to get the chrome one in my new apartment because I thought it looked sharp. At first it was working fine, but the plastic piece that covers the connection on the faucet came off and looked awful. This after only a couple months of use. I decided to get a new one of the same unit and take the other one back with the new receipt. It wasnt even two months and the same plastic piece fell off of the new one and then developed a nasty leak that would squirt right at me if the water pressure was high enough. Now there is also a leak between the faucet and the filter so the water that comes out of the filter is mixed with tap water dripping down the unit. Unbelievably crappy!
I emailed the company about it and got no response.
I like the old Pur water filter much better. If I get another faucet filter, it will be the white one which will hopefully hold up like the old one did.
Stay away from this model.

Works great, but...     On: 2009-10-24

The PUR filter does a great job of removing impurities from tap water. Without the filter my water tastes like it came from a swimming pool, but the filter makes it taste like bottled water. The only problem is that the water pressure is reduced by at least half. I thought I had installed it incorrectly, but I guess a slow trickle of water is the price you pay for this type of filter. Other than that, Im satisfied.
Good for a while, then starts leaking     On: 2009-10-19

Ive owned a few different PUR filter enclosures now, and just like all the others this one lasted through about 4 cartridges before it started leaking, this time from around the window/meter area.

Whats the point in having filtered water if its mixing with unfiltered water as its coming out? Im tired of throwing PUR enclosures in the trash. Ill buy one more to get through my remaining filters and then Im changing to another brand.
Save yourself from getting drenched     On: 2009-10-17

Ive used these types of PUR filters for a long time, until now. Having invested in a multi-pak of filter inserts, Ive opted to replace the housing several times. Within the last 18 months, weve gone through four. Heres how it unfolds: the chrome-plated versions - the bottom chrome piece falls off in a month or so, then the upper portion squirts water from the side of the replacement indicator. The white unit develops a crack in the upper housing just above the PUR insignia. In both cases, you and your surroundings will get wet. PUR (Procter & Gamble) will not respond to complaints for warranty or otherwise. The filtered water will taste good, but youll need to wear a raincoat.
The worst faucet mount ever used!     On: 2009-10-14

This thing is hard to install and it leaks after 2 weeks of use. Dont waste your money with this junk.
Okay at first then...........     On: 2009-10-06

Bought this filter through Amazon, got it on the fawcett with a little work. Works flawlessly until about 6 months and around the pivot point ( where it tilts back and forth) it is starting to leak. I contacted PUR customer service a few times and they dont respond. Im still waiting for satisfaction. So if any PUR rep is reading this, Im still waiting on a replacement. Maybe someone could make an effort to reach me through Amazon so I dont have to put my contact info out in the open here.
planed obsolesence     On: 2009-10-02

I believe these things were designed only to last for a short period of time. we just purchased our third one. the first one lasted for two years before it developed a hair line crack below the little filter window. so its off to wallyworld for our second unit. the second unit lasted a full six months before it sprung a leak (another hair line crack just like the first one)so I decided to see if I could repair the crack with some J B weld which worked fine for about a week untill another crack surfaced!! if the one we have now goes belly up soon we will be contacting the company for a refund.
Pur 3-stage clogs up NYC     On: 2009-10-01

I owned this filter in Seattle and now in Queens. They clog up quickly, expect one month of reasonable flow through and then go on to another cartridge. It beats buying bottled water. Disappointing that PUR cannot design a prefilter for sediment - hey are you guys paying attention yet?
Great product     On: 2009-09-18

This is actually the 2nd one of these Ive purchased. They last about 4 years with heavy regular use. I love the filter window. Theres no guessing or trying to remember when the filter needs to be changed. I have reptiles and they cant have tap water, this is perfect. The only thing I dont run the water through this for is washing hands and an occasional hand washed dish. Great value, saves $$ over bottled water and is evnironmentally friendly.
filter     On: 2009-09-13

I got this as a replacement to my old one that lasted about 13 years. I love the chrome finish. It matches my faucet very nicely. Im so used to drinking filtered water, that I can really tell the difference between that and unfiltered tap water. Its very nice and easy to use. Easy to install too. Filters last longer if hot water is NOT used. The indicator is nice too, to let you know when the filter needs replacing.
Just what I wanted.     On: 2009-09-06

My product came in a few days after purchase and was exactly what was described.
Cheap and not in a good way     On: 2009-09-04

Developed a leak in the clear plastic of the meter after only a few months.
Its built in such a way that its impossible to fix
short of slathering silicon all over the meter.
Otherwise, it does what is advertised, it dispenses great tasting water.
Cracks, Leaks, then fell Apart. Do not purchase.     On: 2009-07-30

Bought this filtration system and about a month in it started a slow leak on the sides. The leak got stronger until I had to life the Filter a bit to use the water. The whole filter now fell apart and water was going everywhere. Buy CULLIGAN. I now have 6 more filters and I am forced to by one of these again to use them. When this one goes out as I know it will (Planned Obsolescence?) I will buy the Culligan Filter so Highly reviewed on this site.
Culligan is better!     On: 2009-07-23

I dont know why, but I went through THREE Pur faucet filters before finally chucking them in the garbage and buying the Culligan Faucet Filter. The Pur filters were always leaking from the connectors. And if you tried to adjust them, youd end up stripping the plastic from the connector and being left with an unsightly, scraped up piece of plastic on your sink. And if you do manage to get the Pur filter off to try to repair the leak with plumbers tape, good luck getting the filter back on again.

But the Culligans connector is made of metal (whereas both the filter housing and the connector of the Pur filter was made of plastic), so its easy to get the Culligan filter on and off the sink without any leaking whatsoever!

I also love how easy it is to replace the filters! Just a twist of the fingers and it comes right out. I once got a deep cut from replacing a Pur filter where the edge of the cap sliced right into my hand while I was twisting it off, since there were no finger grips to hold onto.

The Culligan is also nice b/c it doesnt sit as low as the Pur filter, so you can put tall bottles or water pitchers under it with more ease. And the quality of the filter and the taste of the water is the same, if not better than the Pur filter. My main complaint against the Culligan is that it doesnt have an indicator to show you when to change the filter; they tell you just to mark it on your calendar, when to change the filter next.

One last hesitation I had about switching over was the fact that I didnt see replacement Culligan filters readily available in the stores. Pur replacement filters are sold in bulk at Target and my local warehouse store. But once, when Amazon was running a buy 1, get 1 half off sale on the Culligan filters, I saw that buying them one by one on Amazon.com was STILL cheaper than buying the Pur filters in bulk at the warehouse store. Add to that the fact that the Culligan filter is cheaper to begin with and you wont have to waste money replacing it periodically when it breaks down and you just have a product that makes good "dollars and sense".
great product     On: 2009-07-18

both I and my best friend have these on our sinks. Its great and easy to use and install.the filter works good, and turning it on is easier than most other brands.
Developed leaks after only a month or two of use!     On: 2009-07-16

I have used Pur Faucet filter systems for some time and previously enjoyed using it. I had to replace my older one that I had for several years. After purchasing this one it developed several leaks around it in less than 2 months of use. I plan on purchasing another hoping it was just a fluke or an individual flaw. I hope the new one works. I didnt save the box nor paperwork because I never dreamed it wouldnt last the the older model did.
Now tap water is filtered too!     On: 2009-07-15

We had this same water filter when we lived up north; as were living in SW Florida now and I dont like the taste of tap water, I found the purchase price of this PUR filter far more economical than from our local True Value, who offered the two-stage but not the three-stage, as ordered from Amazon. Too, the six-pack of filters was a much better price, so were happy all around. Weve got filtered water from the refrig and now also from the tap.
This thing cracks like an egg     On: 2009-07-11

After using the unit thru 2 filters, hairline cracks started appearing. So when you would flip the unit vertical for filtered water, water would spray out of the cracks at high velocity. Scared the stew out of me when it happened. So now the unit sits unused, waiting for me to decide what to do. I still have filters left to use, so do I buy the same unit and hope it lasts. Well stupid is as stupid does. This is my third unit. First one cracked, emailed P&G to complain and got a coupon for a replacement. Second one was the stainless steel looking one. It cracked where it joins with the faucet. So here I am with the third one. Somebody shoot me. P&G who owns PUR must know this because it is a chronic issue. They are either stupid or just dont care. Time to shop around.
Trying another brand...     On: 2009-07-09

Between my boyfriends house and my own, weve tried about 5 of the Pur water filters including this one. They all spring leaks within 4 months. I keep trading them in thinking that I just bought a faulty one, but Im DONE GETTIN SPRAYED!! Learn from our mistake(s) and try another brand.
An absolute necessity!     On: 2009-07-06

Ive been using these filters for years and like them very much. I have no way of knowing how well it filters all the icky stuff listed on the package, but it makes my horrible tasting tap water taste great. I wouldnt think of making a cup of tea without it. Its easy to use and much easier, cheaper, and better for the environment than buying bottled water. I prefer the vertical filter to the horizontal one only because its a little more obvious when the filter is engaged and when theres tap water coming from the faucet - no point in using filtered water to wash your hands. They dont last forever, Ive had to replace mine every 2-4 years, but at this price, thats no hardship.
Pur 3 stage Mounted Water Filter     On: 2009-07-02

Though the water quality seemed excellent, I question whether this product is a case of engineered obsolescence. I have had my unit a little over a year & now it leaks/sprays badly...so much so that it has become unusable. Unfortunately before this occurred with mine, I bought one for my mother as a gift in February (2009). It is now July 2009--6 months later & hers does the same. After reading several other individuals accounts here, I would NOT recommend others buy it with the expectation that it will last for any decent amount of time. P&G should be ashamed...
Filters water well, but is poorly/cheaply designed     On: 2009-06-08

Installed easily and filters water well. But it is cheaply made out of plastic and part of the plastic was broken off when I opened it. Sent an email to Pur but never got a response. If I could do it again, I would go with the Britta.
Great Taste, Bad construction     On: 2009-06-07

I switched from Brita pitcher to Pur faucet filter, for its ease. Within 1 year, I changed twice, and now am back to the pither. The first one started leaking within 3 months from the age indicator window. Soon it sprung leaks, and then parts fell off. I got another one, because I had purchased expensive filters. THe exact same thing happened again. Yesterday I switched to Brita pitcher. I will never ever use faucet filter again. I read bad comments about Brita faucet too
Great water, terrible construction     On: 2009-05-26

The water tasted great, but like other reviewers we had problems with construction. We got cracks in the unit itself, followed by leaks around the faucet seal. This was OK until the entire filter unit snapped off and I had to use a pair of pliers to remove the rest of it from the faucet. It lasted a year, so if you can justify the cost then go for it.
I'm buying a culligan, this unit is horrible     On: 2009-05-23

If you can afford to buy a new one every 6 months then go for it. It will leak, it will crack, it will spray everywhere. The company obvious doesnt care as people have to buy new units over and over again. I am now on my 7th unit!!!!, Im done and buying a Culligan.
Leaks like a sieve     On: 2009-05-07

I purchased this product a few hours ago and installed following the enclosed instructions.

The installation was very easy and took less than 10 minutes. The problem started when I turned on the faucet and a stream of filtered water shot across the counter originating from the filter cover. I tried everything and found that the only way to reduce the spray volume was to replace the filter cover with exactly one revolution (instead of flush and tight). My guess is the manufacturer fails to listen to customer feedback or they just dont care.

This would make a great gag gift for a friend. Make sure to come to his house when he installs it, and when he turns on the water have a laugh or two. You may even want to grab a camera to capture the fun.
CALL PROCTER AND GAMBLE FOR FREE REPLACMENT     On: 2009-05-06

I have used PUR filters for 10 years. This is the most horrid model ever. Looks great when you first install it but chrome only emphasises grim and it breaks fast. Same issues as everyone else....leaks, cracks, etc. in less than a year. However I called P&G to complain and they sent me a coupon for a free replacement filter and faucet mount. Sad to see they are producing such garbage from what used to be a great simple system.
Product Breaks Down and Leaks...     On: 2009-04-27

After less than a year, the product leaks terribly from the neck, that attaches to the faucet, just below the Mounting Nut.....the product is only as good as the weakest part!
fantastic for LIGHT DUTY home use!     On: 2009-04-24

Even though this product has gotten so many bad reviews, I bought it anyway! For one thing I have used it before and liked it, and another it was cheaper on Amazon than in my local stores. Most of the bad reviews come from cheap skates and confused people trying to make this thirty dollar screw-on purifier do the job of a plumbed-in (in-line) heavy duty household purifying system! Some of the fault definitely belongs to Pur for trying to market it to everyone so they can make huge profits.

1. If you are one of these households with many kids and requires 10 gallons of purified water a day of course this unit will not work and the constant wear and tear will make the unit wear out fast.

2. THE LEAKS that everyone describes where the purifier joins the faucet can be EASILY FIXED with Teflon tape. Its available at any hardware store. Google it to see how easy it is to use. This only applies to the leaks around threaded parts of the faucet and the purifier. Where the purifier twists to its on/off position is another story. Once that leaks, its over. And with regular light duty use it can last a couple of years or more.

3. The NSF Certification/Rating. Look a few reviews below this one for one called "Good at first but breaks after a year" This person mentions this units NSF rating of 42 to be aesthetic. Which is a very good thing. It reduces the chlorine taste and odor significantly. But also THIS UNIT IS NSF rated 53 for heavy metals, microbes, pharmaceuticals, and other nasties! Looking at that review it makes it seem that this one is not rated as such.

This is a 3 stage, NSF 42 & 53 rated water purifier. You cant beat the price for the range of things it takes out and it does it instantly at the tap. But figure out your needs first! If you really need a plumbed-in household system spend the money to get it. Dont expect this to do it.
Buy a Brita instead     On: 2009-04-21

I was extremely disappointed in this product, which had a number of problems. Id previously used a Brita faucet filter attachment and loved it, but it was lost in a move. When I went to replace it I found a good deal on the Pur filter and liked the look of it so I went with it. Unlike the Brita one I had, this one was annoying to assemble and it took some effort to get the filter installed properly.

Whereas my Brita had great, even water pressure, this one usually has very poor water pressure, then occasionally starts spraying so hard it stings. I had to change the filter sooner than expected and the hardest time getting the replacement put in. Id be afraid it was just me being dense, but I had no problem whatsoever with my Brita. Ill be purchasing another and throwing this one away.
Another great product ruined by the greed of Procter & Gamble     On: 2009-04-21

When we began using PUR filters, the devices and their replacement cartridges were made in the USA by a small innovative company in Colorado. Our first dispenser filter met its end when your butter-fingered reviewer lost his grip and sent it crashing to the floor. We replaced it with another dispenser but by then, Procter & Gamble had acquired PUR and began its campaign to destroy PURs reputation. Production of the filters, and later the faucet-mount units, was sent to Mexico. The helpful Automatic Safety Monitor on the pitcher and dispenser filters was replaced with a useless reminder sticker. Exactly how does a sticker determine the amount of water that has passed through the filter?

Our first faucet-mount unit fell apart at a weak seam near the connection to the faucet. The current unit, as many have reported, is prone to springing leaks around the filter gauge. And thats where the misers at Procter & Gamble have hidden another booby-trap. The gauge is now called the Filter Life Monitor because, unlike the original Automatic Safety Monitor, it doesnt stop the water flow when the filter is used up, so you can no longer tell someone who might find it difficult to read the gauge to simply replace the filter when it shuts itself off.

When we reported our troubles to Procter & Gamble via email, their reply feigned surprised, suggesting that this is an extremely rare problem. Theyve promised to send a return box and monetary compensation for our troubles. Sad to say, that check will pay for a competitors product.
Am returning this product!     On: 2009-04-19

I bought this product because a co-worker raved about it. She told me that its the only filter that removes two potentially deadly toxins that are in our Los Angeles water. My husband installed the filter and let it run, as directed. After the installation, I wanted to test the water. However, there were small black things floating in the water. We let the faucet run again. I tried the water, and yet again there were black particles in the water. I dont know what those particles are, but I know there should be nothing floating in the water from a filter...and ESPECIALLY nothing black!!! So, I am returning this filter!
Leaked, cracked, and reduced water pressure to unusable levels     On: 2009-04-07

Okay, its cheap. But, its cheap. Get something better if you want to have filtered water at the sink. This cracked and leaked within a couple of months of installation, and choked the water flow to a trickle when used within a few weeks.
No water pressure!     On: 2009-04-05

Water tastes better, but at the expense of any water pressure! Within weeks of installing a new filter, there is barely a trickle coming out & the washer is leaking water all over the place. Ive tightened the washer & replaced the filter countless times at this point, trying to fix these problems. Very annoying & totally impractical!
cracks and leaks     On: 2009-04-04

The "PUR FM3400 Water Purification System" that attaches to your faucet works great for the first 1.5 years and then starts cracking and leaking. The filters are fine, its the housing that has serious problems. It is easy to install and use. The first one I bought worked fine for about a 1.5 years and then cracked around the usage meter window and started leaking down the side (had to put some tape on it) and then around the bottom where the water comes out, water started spraying out the side which either got the wall wet or me wet. I thought it was a fluke and got a new one. Well, 1.5 years later, the water starting spraying out from the bottom again and then 3 days later, the whole bottom piece popped off. I looked at this screw-in piece and saw that the threading was some cheap plastic and it was eroded/eroding away, at this point it was impossible to screw back in; I just had to throw it in the trash. Needless to say, enough is enough. I will not try this product again!
Bad decision     On: 2009-03-12

Hi,
I bought this despite the bad reviews to replace my old unit since I still have some filters left. Also the old unit worked okay for a longer time but needed to be replaced.
During the installation the little chrome plastic sleeve under the mounting fell off like it was never really attached.
The filter can`t handle the water pressure at my place, the water comes out above and underneath the faucet mounting ring and mixes with filtered water which is no good.
I used some tape to get a better seal and now the water which still comes out underneath the ring at least does not mix with filtered water.
The unit is defiantly going into the trash after I used the rest of my filters of.
I am much happier with the Culligan unit when it comes to craftsmanship but I can`t say how long the filter is going to last since I just got it.

Poor Quality Product     On: 2009-03-07

I bought the PUR "chrome" (its really chrome-looking PLASTIC) faucet mount and do not recommend it. I got it about a year ago. About 3 months into using it, the "chrome" piece unstuck---its really just cheaply glued onto black plastic. This was not a problem as it was just cosmetic. However, soon the actual tap starts leaking while Im filtering water. This steady stream only grows with the passing months wasting too much water. Then, water starts to seep out from the seam of the filters plastic housing. Way too much water leaking everywhere! I got rid of the filter and wont be buying anymore PUR products. Too bad because the filtered water tasted quite good. There is no excuse as this product has been on the market for quite a few years and the company has had plenty of time to address these issues before I unknowingly bought this dud. Its one thing to put out a product and update the model if problems surface, its another to ignore problems and simply continue making the same piece of poo. They wont fool me again!
Not a 1, but a big fat ZERO     On: 2009-02-27

Unfortunately I went and bought the same model after the first one leaked and the chrome (Plastic) piece fell off after only 3 months of use. The second one I bought was even worse and leaks all over the place. It has two pieces of the chrome ( Plastic) housing that have fallen off the unit. Other than that it does great with filtering the water if you dont mind the constant leaking. I have to agree with one of the other comments posted here that turning the unit maybe causing it to fail so early. Just recentIy I bought the upgraded one (just turn the valve not the whole unit) for someone and hope it will last longer than mine did.
PUR faucet water purifier     On: 2009-02-26

PUR FM-3700 3 Stage Vertical Faucet Mount with Filter Chrome

Before I got the PUR ... my water smelled like BLEACH! It tasted salty and left a nasty residue in each water glass or coffee cup. It KILLED my house plants! Now, my water tastes clean as spring water. I use it to water my bonsai trees. I am 100% satisfied with this product and other people in my apartment building have asked me about it and plan to get one also.

Disappointed     On: 2009-02-10

I purchased this model and the taste of the water was a big improvement. However, upon the filter wearing to the end of its lifespan, the filter housing developed a leak in the filter read window on the unit. The unit began squirting water out the side of the window while filling the glass from below the housing unit. I wouldnt buy another like it due to its short lifespan. I didnt even get to use a second filter with it before the leak developed.
Cracked in 4months     On: 2009-01-17

It developed a crack at the indicator after 4 months. Poor design. Never buy again.
good, inexpensive filter     On: 2009-01-08

Ive had mine for a couple of months and havent had the problems with cracking yet that others have described. I like that only the internal filter needs to be replaced, not the whole housing like the Brita. My previous Brita filter did develop leaks and cracks as described here. I think that when this filter dies though, Ill go with a countertop model - the filters last much longer, about a year or so, and I think in the long run it will be a better investment.
Filter maybe OK, but the enclosure (housing) is rubbish     On: 2009-01-08

I bought this unit (chrome color) in 2005 to provide drinking water for my family. I have not much to say about the filtration capability, but the water tastes good (fine) with it. But the filter life is short for the way we use water (read: a lot of water). In this respect, this filter has not been economical for us.

But I have much to complain about the housing of the filter. First, the positioning of the filter unit on the faucet top is awkward. It reduces our moving space when washing large pots; and it is often hit by the pots and utensils being washed. Second, the housing is NOT durable. It is all plastic, like many of other reviewers said, and as such it is broken easily. I am surprised how quickly the units mechanicals broke down--only in the matter of a few months. I have gone through at least 3 units, and all of them leak here and there, or the flow switch was breaking. The company was kind enough to send me 2 replacements without question asked. After the unit began to leak, the filtered water was mixed with the unfiltered water. Whats the point, then? Yes, when I bought it in 2005 it has 5 year warranty (now it is 1 year--you know why)--but I am not going to call them anymore to ask for a new unit. Enough is enough. I am going to switch to another form of filtration.
Easily damaged, always looks dirty     On: 2009-01-04

This is our second water filter unit in our current home, and our third overall, having installed one in the apartment many years ago. We werent able to get filters for the last unit we owned (a Brita) anymore so we picked up one of these Pur units in our local supermarket. Boy, what a disappointment. The plastic (dont be fooled, its all plastic) cracked pretty quickly, so the shiny bottom you see in the picture is gone - fell off. Instead we get to see the ugly black plastic underneath. The filters need to be changed relatively often compared to previous filters weve owned. And since its all plastic its almost impossible to keep clean - even the slightest grease, fingerprints, etc. put spots on the outside that only glass cleaner will temporarily remove.

The unit currently works fine if you excuse the hairline leak that sprays a fine mist of water all over the sink, but its so ugly and annoying we just cant stand looking at it anymore and were replacing it.
Pur Lies     On: 2009-01-03

We picked up a Pur faucet filtration system for my home about six months ago. We also bought quite a few filters. They were very expensive (why does plastic and carbon cost so much?), but we figured that good water was worth it - particularly since we have a little boy.

Our water is city water. Its not bad, but we thought it wouldnt hurt to be a little extra safe. Its just too bad we went with Pur.

The filters are supposed to last for two months or 100 gallons. So far, only one out of TEN filters has actually lasted that long. The rest have died within one to three WEEKS. The water stream quickly became very weak, ending up as mere drops. We were always careful to follow instructions, never ran hot or warm water through the tap...still, no matter what we did the filters died in practically no time at all.

We contacted Pur, and they claimed that our water must be incredibly bad. We dont believe that this is the case. We get city water, and its analyzed on a regular basis; its not particularly hard or soft, and nobody we know has ever had any problem with it. We used other filters in the past, and never had this problem. And its not as if we got a bad batch of filters; weve bought filters from several different stores over a period of months, and theyve almost all been awful. Approximately $10 per filter is a decent price if they work as indicated, but when they only last 1/8 as long as claimed, they become a rip-off.

Once we use up our final filter, well be looking for a new filtration system. Ill never buy from Pur again.
doesn't last     On: 2009-01-03

Great idea, just not very well made. The first one cracked at the cap, the second one leaked around the faucet where it cant be repaired. Both happened in less than a year. Just doesnt hold up well.
Not worth the money - look for another one, a better one!     On: 2008-12-28

Ive had 2 of these exact filter systems and both had the same issues.
By mistake I bought a 6 pack filter re-fill with the first system that I got, but the system went bad after about 4 months - It developed cracks and plastics started to fall apart. But I still had 5 re-fills left that I didnt want to throw away after paying quite a bit of money for them. So I bought another system, so I could use up all the filters and well enough about 1 year after it has the same problems. Luckily I am going through my last filter right now and I am definitely buying another brand this time.
While the idea of this system was great it definitely needs a lot of quality improvements, so it can actually last for few years at least.
I gave it 2 stars, because I do think they did a great job on the design part of this system, but the quality of it would not pass a one star rating.
Worth the money but a little short-lived     On: 2008-12-22

Ive owned this for about year, give or take a couple months. While Ive had it, its been pretty good. It recently failed. Like J. Hunter and others, it developed a crack just below the indicator window. It started with a pin-sized spray of water but rapidly worsened.

While I had it, heres how it stacked up:
* The water tasted decent. I thought it compared well ito my Brita pitcher, though the latter was a little better.
* The water flow out the filter was agonizingly slow at first but I eventually stopped noticing.
* To bypass the filter, you tip the entire "bulb" back or forward. Its pretty easy to use.
* This thing had a best aerator Ive ever installed on a sink. Ever. Its not a feature I was shopping for and I was really surprised that I cared!
* The filters were awkward to replace. You have to screw off the bottom and use water pressure to eject the old filter. Not terrible but Britas on-tap unit seems better in this department.

I replaced my Pur filter with a Brita equivalent but that failed in less than 2 days. Im on the hunt for an alternative to either. If I dont find one soon, Im OK buying another Pur.
First time fawcett filter owner     On: 2008-12-21

This is the first fawcett water filter, actually any kind of water filter, Ive ever purchased. After researching many types, stages, reviews and prices, I decided to buy this PUR chrome finish fawcett mount filter with 6 extra filter replacements. I didnt know what to expect after reading so many different reviews and satisfaction levels.
The package came quickly. Instructions were clear, and came with a few fawcett adapters included if needed. Easy to use once mounted on the fawcett. Produces very clean smelling and tasting water. Even our ADC coffee tastes better. The coffee seems "smoother" in consistency too, if thats possible. I use the filtered water to cook with also.
No more buying bottled water and lugging those around, or finding out I was low on bottled water when I needed it. No more concerns about any plastic bottle chemicals leaching into the bottled water. No more concerns about if those bottles are really getting recycled or are they going into the land fill. Theres definately many pros to go this way.
An expensive way to get a cheap product     On: 2008-12-18

Id seen this unit advertised on television and purchased it about a year ago. It started falling apart almost immediately. The decorative cover on the bottom of the filter unit and the sleeve above the aerator came loose in the first two months. So it went from "chrome" finish to just plain ugly. At almost a year, the valve to divert the water cant close so water always flow from both the filter and the unfiltered tap. The three stage filters last a little less than a month before the water stops flowing through them altogether. Ive just purchased a countertop unit which will be much cheaper to use.

If you do get this unit, be aware than the best price for filters can be had through Amazon if you get a six pack (a little less than $10 dollars per filter). If you purchase them through a local store, you might end up spending $12, $13, or more.
Great for the first cartridge     On: 2008-12-15

Ive had this filter for about 2 years now and just replaced the cartridge. It worked fine with the first cartridge. The water tasted great. However, once the cartridge was replaced, the indicator area began leaking upon every use. Slowing the flow to a trickle seemed to stop the leaking, but then, what would be the point?
Disposable     On: 2008-12-15

I bought my Pur faucet filter to replace a Brita. I wanted something with a more convenient shape and that offered a stronger flow of filtered water, and Pur did provide those benefits. While it lasted, the water tasted great, which is why I give it two stars.

The problem is, the unit starts falling apart rather quickly. Pieces of cosmetic chrome started falling off after just a few months. I decided the quality of water was worth putting up with an ugly faucet mount, and just continued on replacing filters for the unit. Then, within a couple of months of that, a crack opened up in the replacement monitor casing. I have been very careful about not running hot water through the filter, so this has to be the result of a design flaw. However, I was able to get a few more months of life out of the unit by slapping some aluminum tape over the crack. The crack has finally widened to a point that no amount of aluminum tape is going to save it. I thought about trying plumbing epoxy, and then realized that Id probably save myself a lot of headache if I just replaced the unit altogether.

It will not be a Pur.

*Also worth noting: the refill cartridges are not recyclable, and P&G has no immediate plans to address that issue.
developed crakafter 2 months     On: 2008-12-12

like another reviewer my filter developed a crack after only a couple of months. The water tasted great while it lasted. I tried a brita faucet filter also and the filter would just pop out of its mount with increased water pressure. I dont know what i will do now, but I need to filter my water b/c it tastes so gross and I drink a lot of water so a pitcher wont work for me.
Total waste of money     On: 2008-12-10

This product is a total waste of money. We bought it on amazon and it worked fine for 2 weeks. Then it started leaking and how! My kitchen was all flooded whenever I used it. I am not going to buy another Pur product for sure.
bottled, filtered water will be needed during the coming Depression     On: 2008-12-05

The PUR FM-3700 3 Stage Vertical Faucet Mount water filter with refills will keep you refilling your water bottles. Stock up each time the Bottled water is on sale. Clean, and sanitize your used water bottles and refill them and drink the refilled bottles of water, so your stock of New water isnt depleted. The FEMA Disaster Preparedness Website give full instructions on how to sanitize your used plastic water/Juice bottles for re-use as a storage medium. PUR will give you the filtered Water. Beside, its the GREEN thing to do.
tried 3, all breaks after 2nd change     On: 2008-12-03

Very poorly constructed, each of them broke and started leaking water and bypassing filter after 2-3 filter changes. I bought a 10 pack filter, so had no choice but to keep buying the actual outside cell and they keep breaking.

Do not recommmand this at all.
Pur Water Filter     On: 2008-12-03

In only six weeks filter housing cracked from middle of indicator half way down, squirting water all over. Waste of money, cheap product
stuck with leftover filters     On: 2008-12-01

I have bought Pur filters repeatedly over the years. The filters have always clogged long before the indicator turns red. Previously, I returned them, as refills were $20 each and had to be replaced weekly. This one had cheaper refills, and they last for three or four weeks before they clog. BY clog, I mean no water comes through at all. I could deal with that and I could deal with the fact that pieces of the outside were falling off, revealing black underneath. I bought this one in February, and now, eight months later it leaks as much unfiltered water as filtered when I filter water, and it drips water when washing dishes. Where do I send it back, along with the unused replacement filters?
KP     On: 2008-11-25

Filter provides good tasting water and was easy to install. Much better than other facet mounted filters I have used in the past.
Pur--ly Crackable     On: 2008-11-22

Though a perfect solution for Seniors with arthritic conditions, P&G should be ashamed for distributing this product. Apparently sending it to Mexico for sub-par plastic mold manufacturing makes it okay to then sell it in the U.S.

By the way, they actually make more money on the filters--but you can soak them in Vinegar to clear out the lime build-up and get extended life from it. However, I havent found a solution that works for resealing the plastic molding.

If you dont want this kind of trouble from a product--dont buy it.

Leaky Leaky, Breaks off easily     On: 2008-11-22

Been through 2, both leaking terribly. The second one would leak, even when "off",which meant hot water would run through and ruin the filter. The last one also broke off at the plastic spigot and landed in the sink when I accidentally bumped it while trying to wash the big high-chair tray in the sink. Trying Brita next.
Leaky Mess     On: 2008-11-21

Sure the box raves about how it filters different types of sediment, but it doesnt tell you how leaky it is. We bought two (one after another) and it leaked from underneath the faucet connector both times. Tightened and retightened, but no improvement. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Didnt even get to taste the water
Hairline crack     On: 2008-11-19

I have the same problem as stated above. After a couple of months of operation, a hairline crack developed at the replacement indicator window. Sadly the construction is not what it should be as my wife and I use the unit very lightly.

Ive contacted P&G and hopefully they will cross ship a replacement. If not, I would say avoid this product and others made by this company. I will try to post back when I have heard from P&G so that others know how this was resolved.

Hope this helps!
Do not buy this     On: 2008-11-11

Pur faucet mount filters have gone down the drain, quality-wise. We purchased this to replace the Pur faucet mount weve had for several years which just recently started leaking. Installed the brand new mount and it started immediately. Cannot get it to stop leaking. Absolute piece of junk, this.
Don't trust the indicator     On: 2008-11-10

The unit is easy to install, and filter change is also rather simple. But you would get a lot of practice, changing the filters, anyhow: They dont seem to last nearly as long as promised. I had to change mine after maybe three weeks of use. According to the red indicator, it would have been good for a lot longer, but the flow of water had been reduced to a drip, and only a new filter cartridge could address that problem. And given the price of replacement filters, one might be better off buying water by the gallon.
Great,Except One Thing     On: 2008-11-09

Works great, makes water tastes great with no aftertaste, chlorine or chemicals.Just one thing,on the chrome one the chrome chips off,I have had mine over 5 years and its got much use and some of the chrome has chipped off.I dont know about the other colors.Wish theyd make a stainless steel one.
There is an indicator on it that shows when the filter is dead,I run mine a few weeks over and water still taste really good and filtered.
Excellent Filter     On: 2008-11-07

Ive been using PUR filters for about 6 years and they are a very convenient and affordable way to filter tap water.
Beware unless you plan to buy new unit every 2 months     On: 2008-11-07

This product has very cheap plastic the outside case will not even last til the filter is finished up it will crack. First unit we had cracked about 20 days after using it so we decided maybe was defective so bought a second unit only to have that one crack 2 months after getting. The point of the product is to filter your water but if you have cracks that are running regular water down the side that is not filter and getting into your filter water only half your water is safe. So I would have to say unless you have $30.00 plus shipping to spend every few weeks I would not bother with this one. As for the full Warranty will cost you about $7.00 to mail back to the company and even then you may not get a refund. I was told they may decide it was not a defect and refuse a refund, which then you just add another $7 down the drain. So just BEWARE what you may be getting for your money.
So far very good     On: 2008-10-24

Purchased this filter about two months ago. The usage indicator suggests we have a long way to go. No problems at all, so far. One of the faucet connectors included in the box allowed for a very easy installing.
Our impression is that the filtered water is unqualifiedly superior to the one we have tried for years using Brita filters (not faucet-connected). The filtered water flows with a constant outstanding speed.

Prior to purchasing the product online, I had read through many reviews of this and competitive products.
Of all filtering methods available, this one seems to be the most advantageous and practical. The cost is most competitive.

Some reviewers have complained that the product begins cracking after a year of usage. For the price, one year life-time is not bad at all! Perhaps some unsatisfied reviewers were not handling the piece with due care. When activating, the apparatus is to be turned downward; of course, this should be done gently (even though the piece is pretty sturdy). The user is also warned never to use hot water through the filter.
Cracks and short life span for cartridge     On: 2008-10-14

Ive had this faucet mount for close to a year. While the water does taste good, the short cartridge life and the eventual cracks that the housing develops after a while makes this a useless product. The cartridges almost always clogged up so badly to a trickle even before the indicator went to 3/4 full. This mean more frequent costly replacements. Now that the housing has developed cracks and water spits out from 3 different places, we cant even turn it on anymore. Considering the many reviews with the same problems, its obvious its inherent in the product and theres no reason to buy another. Now on to another solution!
Getting ready to pitch my third one     On: 2008-10-09

After our first one leaked, we thought it was faulty and bought another. After a few months, that one started leaking too. We wrote to PUR, and they sent us a free coupon for a replacement. Its been about 4 months now and this one is leaking like crazy too, so now were looking into other options.
Leaky but better than a Brita.     On: 2008-10-07

The good thing about this product is its convenient in the sense that you dont have to fill up a pitcher and the water quality is good. The annoying part is a) the filters are expensive and you go through them QUICKLY (i.e. about two weeks for my, my wife, and our 3-month old); and b) the damn thing leaks so I am constantly tightening, taking it off and putting it back on, etc. etc. This is super-annoying because it squirts and spurts right on you as youre trying to do the dishes. Major design flaw. Well live with it because we like the water, but this is not really a very good product at all. Unfortunately it seems like the best thing without going to another class and spending major $$.
i love the item, very compact and cool design and 10x better than the previous one i had which stood on the counter/sink.     On: 2008-10-03

i like the design of this filter, the switching action between filter and regular tap is very smooth. another thing i liked about this item is its space saving design which means no more hoses snaking around the sink. Very happy with my purchase.
Great faucet filter     On: 2008-09-24

Ive had the unit for about a month and it is as advertised, easy to install, no leaks and the water that is filtered tastes great.
Good water, terrible quality     On: 2008-09-20

The water coming out of this filter has always tasted great, but after less than a year, the outside plastic (chrome-colored part) began falling off. A short time later, the whole thing started springing leaks. Im a stickler for using things "as directed," so this is definitely a quality issue with the product. Im replacing it with another brand.
"Amazingly, it leaves behind healthful fluoride" ?     On: 2008-09-10

On box it says "Amazingly, it leaves behind healthful fluoride, along with a clean, fresh taste!"

Now I dont know about you but I have learned that fluoride is highly toxic (a by-product of aluminum manufacturing) it is also one of the main ingredients in some RAT POISON. I want a water filter to REMOVE fluoride not promote it!!! Do some research, fluoride is toxic and we have been programed to believe it helps reduce tooth decay! GET THIS: The ADA recently came out and said that too much of it actually creates tooth decay! Insanity...........
Good at first but breaks after a year.     On: 2008-09-07

So this is my second PUR water filter mount. Both were this same model. Right out of the package they work great. Its not entirely necessary as our water is already clean out of the faucet, but it does remove any particulates that may reside in the distribution piping and home piping, as well as removing the chlorine residual that is in most tap water. After about a year, coincidentally just as the one year warranty expires, the valve that bridges between the faucet and the filter begins to degrade. Now even when the filter is turned off, water still flows through the valve and through the filter thereby dramatically decreasing the lifespan of the filter since water is always flowing through it. This is a POOR engineering design that should have been addressed by this company. This is the reason why Im giving it one star. I figured my first filter was just a fluke, but this problem was confirmed yet again on my second filter.

My recommendation:
1) Go for a faucet mount that you dont have to physically turn to activate. I feel that the repetitive action of turning this up and down multiple times a day leads to premature fatigue of this product.
2) Dont worry so much about ancillary features like lights, etc. The filter is what you should be concerned about since this is what is polishing your water.
3) Look for NSF Certification. NSF 42 is for aesthetic effects. Even better is the NSF 53 is for removing health related contaminants. NSF 58 is for reverse osmosis filters which removes even more chemicals than the 53, however I feel this is a bit overkill for a home filter.
4) Go for a product that has at least a 3 year warranty. That way you dont have to keep spending $30+/- every year on the same darn product. Im surprised that this product has a 5 year warranty when the same model in my local Home Depot only had a one year warranty.

After doing some more research, Ive found this product here:
Bestfilters Countertop Superior Water Filter System - White - with 1 Micron Carbon Block Water Filter
Price isnt too bad and it is certified for NSF 53. The KX Matrikx PB1 filter has an ABSOLUTE pore size of 1 micron, which removes giardia and cryptosporidium as these guys are larger in size than 1 micron. Be careful of filters that claim a NOMINAL pore size of 1 micron as these can let 20-30% of particles greater than 1 micron through.

Hope this helps.
Fell apart - don't waste your money     On: 2008-09-01

While gently installing this filter, the decorative, chrome colored plastic piece just above the aerator fell off in my hand.

The next day, the chrome colored, plastic, dome cover at the bottom of the filter where the filtered water comes out fell off in the sink without even touching it.

Because I couldnt find the receipt, I repaired my new water filter with some glue.

The cost of the replacement filters is very expensive - triple the cost of the R2C filters of the similar Waterpik filter.

There is a filter change indicator to let you know when to change the filter, and the same mechanism that moves the change filter indicator will shut off your filtered water if you wait long enough, ensuring that youll run right out to buy an overpriced replacement filter. This happened to me after using the filter for one month. You can get the filtered water flowing again by removing the filter and sticking it right back in. Of course you will have to replace it at some point and cant do this forever.

This product makes it on my long list of inferior, made-in-China products by name-brand companies. You can bet I wont be buying anything with the Pur name on it again. When its time to buy replacement filters, I will instead be unscrewing this inferior product from my faucet and tossing it into the trash, before it starts leaking (according to the other reviews here)!

Pur Products are the best!     On: 2008-08-31

I was using the 2-stage water pur filter but went to the 3-stage one this purchased and the water is even clearer tasting and refreshing to drink with the 3-stage purification!
Cracks and leaking     On: 2008-08-29

The Pur water filter system is very easy to install, and the filters themselves do a fine job. The filtered water definitely tastes better than straight from the tap. In December 2007 I installed one system in my family house and one in a small apartment I keep close to my job. By June 2008 the one in my family house began to leak and spray water at the faucet connection, and could not be repaired. By August 2008 the one in my apartment (which was used far, far less than the other one) had developed three cracks in the housing, causing water to spray in three directions. Judging by the other reviews, this is not unusual.

Every product has some built-in obsolescence, I guess, but this is just shoddy. Pur make great water filters. It would just be nice if they would make a quality filter system that wont fall apart after six months.
Mostly good     On: 2008-08-19

I purchased this as a replacement for an old horizontal one (which was a replacement for an older one that was replaced under warranty when it broke).

The vertical one seems like it might work a bit better in our situation but they all suffer from water wicking into the gap between the outer color layer (chrome on ours) and the main plastic body allowing mold to grow. It should have been sealed at manufacturing time but regular cleaning with simple chlorine bleach kills any mold and doesnt hurt the water quality.

The lid is sometimes difficult to unscrew since its smooth and often wet, we have a sticky plastic pad for opening jars that grabs and turns the lid with no problem.
WARNING - DO NOT BUY THIS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT!!!     On: 2008-08-15

This is the 3rd or 4th Pur water filter that Ive had. The first few times I tried the models without the "filter-life indicator" window. All of them eventually leaked and had to be discarded. With the model that I now own, I have had exactly the same problem as described by others here - half-way through the very first filter, it started leaking from the indicator window - at first it was a slow leak but after a few weeks turned into a spray that gets all over you. In general, these Pur filters do not last very long, and this model with the clear window definitely has a design defect - I would warn anybody to avoid purchasing this item or similar Pur faucet filters. Im going to try a Brita filter.
Water tastes clean when you finally fill your cup     On: 2008-08-12

This filter looks good and makes the water taste good. The only problem is that after you use a new filter for a couple of days, the water is processed way to slow.
Piece of Junk     On: 2008-08-10

Dont waste your money on this. The other 1 star reviews are very accurate. This POS will leak and/or break on you in less than 3 months.
Water flows to a drip after 2 weeks in NY     On: 2008-08-07

On initial use, the water certainly tasted far better than straight from the mains and the unit performed well... for about one week.

The attachment to the faucet was better quality than Britas version, being metal rather than plastic, however due to water ingress the faux chrome plastic sleeve became unstuck after about a week.

The main problem, however, is that the water flow slowed down considerably after about 2 weeks and was unusable, giving only a very slow trickle, so slow that it dripped back up the faucet!

It says in the instructions that water with a high amount of particles can affect the flow rate, but this is crazy! I had to return this product back to the store. I live in Manhattan, NY if thats any use to any other potential buyers.

I then tried the Pur vertical mount, which still trickled, then Britas version, which didnt trickle but just sprayed everywhere. My final test is a Clear2O water pitcher... fingers crossed.
Great tasting filtered water     On: 2008-08-07

Ive owned several PUR water filters over the years...not because I move a lot, but because they dont usually last more than a year. It really is my only complaint (other than the cost of the filters) that the filter housing isnt more durable. Either the valve diverter starts to fail causing flow from both the faucet and filter, or a leak develops--usually around the oval "use" window. Better yet would be a sink-installable unit built out of brass, but when purchased at a discount its results are superior to many under-the-counter single filtration type units.
Worked well but started to leak     On: 2008-07-04

Comparing to the previous DuPont faucet mount filter I had, this was much better (greater water flow and no leakage) for the first 1 year or so. Then, when filter was turned on, leakage started to happen from the unfiltered opening (which was not that bad, except for the waste of water). Another half year and thin cracks developed in two places in the middle-upper part of the case. I tried to glue it together with silicone (didnt work at all) and duct tape (worked to some extent), but the water pressure is just too strong, so its still leaked. I then bought waterproof tape (aluminum sided) and the leakage from the cracks stopped, although the leakage from the unfiltered opening increased (after 3 months, it became too much and my wife asked me to get another filter). My conclusion is: bad engineering (needs stronger case and better control of water flow when filter is on).
If you buy this, dont expect to last more than one year. Considering the cost, its still worth it, but I switched to the Culligans faucet mount filter (lets see how good it is).
Good Product     On: 2008-06-18

Good Product, took some time to reach but it is pretty nice and easy to install
Quick, relatively cheap solution     On: 2008-06-11

This product isnt particularly pretty, but its cheaper than the under-sink type filter and, presumably, provides clean water in these days when we cant take for granted the safety of anything we eat or drink. I havent tested the water, so Im basing my assumption of effective filtering on faith. The filter is large, and the way it fits means its harder to fit a large pot underneath, so take your faucet height/sink depth into account when considering this. It doesnt leak, and weve had no problems so far.
Don't bother     On: 2008-06-04

While the filtered water from the Pur system tastes great it just isnt worth the hassle. After trying both vertical and horizontal styles I have given up on Pur. I have been through 5 of them and none has lasted through more than 3 filters. The unit will start leaking and spraying all over the kitchen and since it is entirely plastic there is no way to repair them. I personally have had good luck with contacting Pur. Twice they replaced the unit at no cost but the replacements broke within a couple of months. But replacing shouldnt be the answer. I dont know what to buy next as every other brand seems to have similar problems. And the companies dont seem to be trying to find a solution to the defects.
Dissapointed     On: 2008-05-19

I was very dissapointd with my purchase. In a couple of weeks the filter started dripping and wasnt filtering the water properly. I had to wait for about 3 hours to fill a 3 quart pot. I received a replacement and the same thing happened. I went and purchased yet another filter and after a month of my purchase I am having the same problem. The chromed section on the base of the filter fell off and I tried to glue it back but it wouldnt hold. I have given up on this system and have since purchased another brand. I must say I am very dissapointed in the overall performance.
Best I have tried.     On: 2008-05-11

Considering my tap water is undrinkable from the tap for variose reasons. This filter works better for me than any I have bought (my total is up to 3 at the moment) and the package deal with the filters really made the sale having 6 months minimum of filters with the unit out of the box is a great idea.
Other than the leaking, it works!     On: 2008-04-25

It leaks, but it still does the work. It started leaking after the first filter change. But I bought a five pack, so Ill have to be dealing with the warranty company to see what they can do.

BTW, heres the number for the PUR water filter if it starts leaking. They will send you a coupon that you can use to get a new one.

1-800-787-5463 (1-800-PUR-LINE)

I didnt get it right away, so I had to call in to have them resend it.
Cracks within a year     On: 2008-04-23

Ive been using these filters for about four or five years, and just discarded my third unit after it developed small cracks near the indicator (as others have experienced), resulting in a fine spray of water on to me whenever using the filter. This was not fixable, despite repeated attempts with epoxy and silicone. I finally switched to a Brita unit, the design of which I like much more: it takes up less space, has fewer moving parts, and appears less likely to malfunction.

UPDATE:

After several more months, Ive had no problems with the Brita, and still prefer it to the Pur.
hairline cracker     On: 2008-04-17

As others have indicated, this item develops hairline cracks at various locations making it drips from all angles. DO NOT PURCHASE!!!
misinformation and problems     On: 2008-04-11

The product has been working great for 7 months, then it started leaking below the filter indicator. I went online to check the warranty information. Instead of offering a 5 year warranty (as is advertised), the PUR website now says that this product only has a 1 year warranty. Well see how the return process goes.

Somehow, the filter releases little white specs into the water it filters. I thought it was supposed to remove visible specs... It sure makes me question its effective.
Unreliable product, slow customer service     On: 2008-04-04

I got this to replace another Pur faucet mount that had developed a crack after a year of use. The only reason I bought from the company again is that I still had new Pur filters on hand. This time, the faucet mount leaked. After several calls with Purs customer service, the company sent an adaptor to fix the leak. A whole month passed between the time I first called customer service and the time that the problem got fixed.
Easy to install but breaks quickly     On: 2008-03-28

This product is easy to install, but considering the price of filters, youd think they could make it a little more durable. Weve used Britta faucet mounts before and left them at previous apartments. We have never had a problem with them, even after years of use. This PUR filter started falling apart after only a couple of months. Weve rigged it until we finish up our stock of filters and then we will be buying a different brand. Do not waste your money on this product until they improve the design.
Faucet attachment breaks frequently     On: 2008-03-26

The plastic attachment to the faucet breaks easily. At the moment, we are on our third replacement and the plastic ring tends to break after 4 - 5 months. There does not seem to be a replacement, so one has to buy a completely new system.
Almost perfect...     On: 2008-03-25

Im on my second sink unit at the moment, and I wouldnt trade it for any other type or brand (not that Ive really used that many other kinds, but still...). I went the Brita water pitcher route before and gave it up after not very much time. Im not a huge fan of ice cold water, which is what youre going to get with one of those since theyre generally kept in the refrigerator, and it gave the water a pretty gross taste of plastic. So, I decided to try the Pur filter out. I got the more upscale model the first try...I disrecall the exact model number. It was pretty much identical to this one, except it had a light to indicate where the filter was, instead of the slider thingo this model has. I had to replace that one after not much time, however, because it was really hard to install it onto the sink (my hands arent that strong at the moment), and the screws got stripped out. It kept on leaking more and more water out through the seal that eventually almost no water went through the filter. So, I decided to replace it with this model. It screwed onto the sink much easier than the other one, for some reason, and it doesnt leak a single drop. The only reason Im not giving this review 5 stars, in fact, is because my 1st Pur filter leaked so badly. Im in love with this one, though, and wouldnt trade it for any other kind, especially the nasty plastic-tasting water you get from pitchers.
Easy to Install & Great Taste     On: 2008-03-20

This filter was so easy to install that I didnt even look at the directions. Just take off what you have screwed on to your current faucet and screw on this faucet. It is very light and works great. Turn the filter up to filter water and turn it down to not go through the filter. Simple. The bottom of the filter part unscrews and you just push in the blue 3 state filter. I got the package of filters to have when this one gets dirty. I previously bought a huge system for filtering water and it tasted like plastic. This inexpensive filter worked better than the expensive one. I highly recommend it for mild filtering of water to drink.
terrible     On: 2008-03-19

the water tastes bad, maybe I got a defective one. thats what i get for trying to get a bargain :(
Hard to keep clean     On: 2008-03-08

Being chrome it is hard to keep clean looking and the water comes out so hard in a stream that it can splash you in the face.
not recommended     On: 2008-03-02

After 2 weeks of used, the water is dripping out very slow and 3rd week later no water coming out. Not recommendable.
You can really tell the difference.     On: 2008-02-29

Best $ I ever spent! How can anyone deny themselves clean water over $30 is beyond me. I can even see the diference in my ice cubes. It works, no doubt.
Works fine for me!     On: 2008-02-19

I know many feel that the outside cracks and breaks on the faucet mount system but I have not had that problem with mine yet! Thankfully! I have had one on the faucet for about 5-6 months now and bought this back up one just in case mine cracked and it has not yet! The water tastes good and it seems like it is very inexpensive for what you get. I have been pleased with it--would recommend it!
Seems to have died after 2-3 weeks     On: 2008-02-14

Maybe its all of the crap in LA Municipals water, but the filter element of this thing seems to have been worn out after having owned it for a little over two weeks. It still works, but the flow is way slower than it was when it was new. The overall design of the unit is effective, and the price is low, but the replaceable filter doesnt seem to hold up well to urban water supplies. If anyone else who lives in a big city has encountered anything like this, please let me know as Id be interested in knowing more about this problem and if there are any solutions. You can just comment on my comment. Thanks.
Worked great.... until it cracked...     On: 2008-02-11

Like many others have noted, this is very easy to install, and did a great job of filtering our hard water.... for about 2 months. Thats when cracks started to develop just below the indicator. It only took about another week for the leaks to start and for us to go looking for another brand. I was going to try to get a replacement (theres a 1 year warranty), but based on the fact that so many others seem to be having the same problem with the same model, we just wont bother.
Kind of a "why bother" because it leaks.     On: 2008-02-06

Like many others here, Ive had a problem with this product cracking and leaking in the same spot (near the "Filter Life Monitor").

I have purchased 2 of these now in succession, both had the same defect.

The first developed a leak after the first replacement filter, right at the little window where you can monitor the filter life.

Because I had bought a 3 pack of replacment filters I decided to try again, perhaps the first leak was a fluke.

The second experienced a leak in the same spot-- on the first filter.Once these things are leaking you are mixing filtered water with unfiltered and what is the point?

Ive read reviews dating back at least 4 years from customers having the same problem.

If there is a defect or a problem in manufacturing it doesnt look like Pur (and Proctor and Gamble) is addressing it.

I guess Ill try the pitcher style filter, I most likely wont be purchasing a Pur model.

Ive used Brita before for the pitcher style and they seem to work fine.

It really is too bad that the thing doesnt work, because otherwise the design and price and installation all seem to be as advertised on the box.
Great. but sprung a leak     On: 2008-02-01

It worked great until it sprung a leak. You dont want a leak in one of these. It will spurt halfway across the kitchen in a glorious arc of freezing spray. All over you too.
DEFINITELY RECOMMEND     On: 2008-01-09

Highly recommend the PUR filters, not only do they thoroughly clean the water, they also make it taste amazing.

And Pur has an excellent warranty. I had a unit several years ago that the threading to attach to the sink wore away, and PUR sent me a completely new replacement for free.

Every home should have one of these.

Stock up on the the replacement filters at a warehouse club and they arent so expensive.
Filters work GREAT - However you have to replace faucet unit every year     On: 2008-01-08

Weve been using this system for over 5 years. Makes the water taste GREAT! Huge difference from our lake water, especially in the summer when the algae goes crazy. However, the tap unit is cheaply made. Im on my fourth one. The chrome covering cracks and breaks off after 5-6 months, and the joints spray water. Be prepared to buy new tap unit every year. Best prices for the filter refills are here on Amazon - the 6 pack.
Consistent Quality Water     On: 2007-12-29

I have used this type of PUR filter for about 3 years and would not think of going without one. The first two would go to a trickle within a few months. Apparently, that was due to the quality of the water and not the filter. The water contained a lot of sediment. Once the water main was repaired, each filter since has gone all the way to red, giving consistent tasting water from start to finish.

Whatever PUR is doing I hope they keep doing it. The taste of the water is excellent. Ill taste water from a bathroom tap and water from the PUR filter in the kitchen, and the taste is like night and day. Since using this type of PUR filter, I choose to drink water more times than not.
Leaks.     On: 2007-12-27

On my 2nd one. The first one leaked at the faucet attachment after 6 months. I thought - okay, so it has a half-life. But I still have filters so Ill just buy another. Well, 2nd day of #2, it leaked same place. Not just leaked but SPRAYED ME 1st thing in the am. Pretty frustrating. Next time Im trying a different brand. I tighten it, doesnt help - still leaks and sprays all over - if not immediately, then eventually as the first one did (within 6 months). I fiddled and fiddled, with washers and everything and what worked was - I found that if I swore at it just so and loud enough - it would suddenly stop leaking (probably out of fear), but even then only for a few hours. Then - guess what. Yep. You got it. (rolling eyes)
Started out great and then went downhill     On: 2007-12-22

We have had this product for less than a year. When we first got it we liked it. We have used it enough to change the filter about 5 times. However, as the filter ages the flow reduces. We could deal with that. But in the last month or so it has just started to fall apart. It leaks in several places and a piece of the chrome fell off. I think we will spring for a real filtration system. Probably an under counter system. Dont bother with this product.
Proctor and Gamble - Kinda cracked for putting out such a bad product.     On: 2007-12-12

Im on my third and Im finally throwing in the towel. Each one cracked just as others mentioned. The reason Ive stayed with this product is that its much cheaper overall when you factor in filter life. In the past, Ive used the Brita faucet mount water purifier. The Brita filters seem to only last a week or so. With the Pur product, Ive found the filters last much longer, bout a month.

Im really surprised that P&G seems completely in the dark about this massive product defect. I searched high and low to find a consumer feedback phone number for P&G, none seems to exist. I wonder if they think that its a feature of the product to turn your kitchen faucet area into a childs sprinkler.
Love it!     On: 2007-11-26

As I have become super-paranoid about all things toxic since giving birth to our son, my husband agreed to get this water filter mostly to keep my neuroses from making him crazy. However, it was easy for him to install, is easy to use, and he has admitted that it has made a HUGE difference in taste. We give it 5 stars thus for effectiveness, ease of use, and safety of mind.

One but: on the commercial (the one where a kid knocks over a minivan with a water balloon), they make it sound like this filter removes 99.9% of lead in water. This one does not, and I dont think that Pur sells any better filter (I looked on their website). When you get the box, you disover that it removes 99.9% of BACTERIA in water (is anyone that doesnt frolic with beavers really concerned about giardia these days?) and some smaller, unquoted percentage of metal contaminants. I may just be a knucklehead that is thinking of the wrong product, or I might be misremebering the commercial, but either way, I subtract one star for unfulfilled hopes.

Hope this helps!
QUALITY GONE?     On: 2007-11-17

I am having problems with the "PUR 3 Stage Vertical Faucet Mount"(chrome). After ordering two, one cracked during installation at the attachment point and leaked, the other leaks from the filter change indicator. I Have never had problems with these type filters until recently. Change of materials or quality of manufacturing?
I wouldn't buy another one     On: 2007-11-13

I see other good reviews, so I may just be one of the unlucky buyers. It was great until the indicator said I was about 1/2 way through the filter life. Never had any problems with taste or anything, but it started shooting water out of the clear window where you view the indicator.

At this price, its too cheap, I tossed it and bought another cheap brand until I can afford a much better quality filter, which will probably be when the new one needs a filter change.

I really didnt want to fuss with the warranty process (if its even still under warranty). It was also very difficult to get the old filter out.
Pur water filter     On: 2007-11-08

This filter has cracked below the display window just like others have described online. A few months after purchasing with no damage done by myself to the unit it has developed a hairline crack on the housing which leaks water. Ill be switching to another brand of better quality. Proctor and Gable makes their website very difficult to contact them without the product code and UPC #. Who would still have the box after a few months of purchase? Someone should think about a class action suit here because its obviously a defective design.

So Far So Good     On: 2007-11-06

I have been using PUR faucet mounts for almost 15 years I believe and have come to expect them to work wonderfully. My second one in 15 years recently developed a leak around where it attaches to the faucet. After reading many of the reviews about the newer models seeming to leak like this, I decided to go with this model again. It has a slightly different design, but is essentially the same. Knowing that the threads are plastic and connect to the metal threads of the faucet, you need to be very careful not to strip the threads on the unit. Try to put it on tightly and correctly the first time and dont remove it and I think you should be ok. I also used some plumbers putty on the threads, because trying to use silicone tape, just seemed to slide off the plastic too easily. I would gladly pay the extra price if they were to make a metal housing, and have made that suggestion to their call center. As far as replacement filters: go online and buy the 6 pack, much cheaper! I will continnue to use PUR for all my filtering needs.
Does the trick, but looks industrial.     On: 2007-09-23

This filter works very well... easy to install and the water does taste better than straight tap water. The only comment I have is that it does make your sink look like a water purification factory, as well as cutting down some of your space (if you have a small sink). But if youre worried about that... youd be looking at a pitcher.
Pure Genius     On: 2007-09-18

A brilliant design, easy to install and when you want higher, unfiltered flow, just rotate the filter. Great tasting, filtered water and the filters are economical. Why I waited so long to purchase this, Ill never know. We love the water and the savings.
don't they get it?????     On: 2007-09-11

Purchased the Pur 3-stage water filter system. Then when I had time to throughly read the packaging, I discovered that they do indeed filter out some toxic materials, but then they proceed to filter the chemical FLOURIDE INTO the drinking water and into your glass. In essence they are just exchanging one toxic chemical for another. From my research, flouride is as toxic as the chemicals they are removing. Do your own research on the negative effects of flouride.

Dont they get it??? We purchase water filters to PURIFY the water. Hello, is there any living, thinking intelligence on planet PUR??? Isnt it time to wake up and let these companies know how we feel?

As for me ---I am returning the one I bought and will continute to look for a filter that gives me purified water WITHOUT additives from chemical companies --- that is, after all, my goal --- to stay healthy in a world that is being bombarded by man-made chemicals.
Recommend     On: 2007-09-01

I have been very happy with the quality of this product. Does a great job of purifying the water. I would say the one thing I am not crazy about it the size of it, which takes up a lot of space if you have a shallow sink.
Developed a crack     On: 2007-08-20

Ive been a previous owner of a faucet mount PUR filter that lasted for over 4 years before it finally broke. I purchased this particular model thinking that it would also last, but I was disappointed. A couple of months later, it deveolped a hairline crack just below the filter indicator. I thought I just might have accidentally hit the housing, so I purchased the same model again. Well, this same crack appeared, and now I have contacted P&G. I am seriously thinking of purchasing a different brand.
Pur water filter 3 stage     On: 2007-08-10

It makes my water better but it is not built lke a rock. It leaks and a part of the mount has cracked. Other than these faults the filters are expensive but I have no alternative in my situation.
well-filtering water pitcher     On: 2007-07-16

i already have pretty good water where i live, but this one definitely removes the "tappy" taste. i didnt think it took up more space than the newer horizontal-mount filters, but my faucet curves high. i also like the vertical one better because the horizontal one has a battery to monitor when one should change the filter, meaning the unit may need to be replaced in 5 years. so i went with the classic vertical one.

the missing star is from a slight leak when the water is being filtered. mine is installed without any adapters. my water pressure seems too much for filter, so it does leak from where the unit attaches to the faucet when i have the water on full blast. the leak isnt prominent (if any) when the water pressure isnt too strong.

i really like this unit and would highly recommend it.
Poorly Made     On: 2007-07-04

After this was installed, it sprayed all over the place. Basically it hit the bottom of the sink (or dishes or sponge, etc.) in such a way that it sprayed all over the counter and my clothes. Even when my faucet (without a filter) was on full blast it never splattered all over the place. I dont think a product like this should do that, and so either ours was defective or its just a bad design. It wasnt easy to adjust and the finish came off when trying to take off. It was promptly returned. Ill look into another brand. I wasnt impressed with this filter.
great water, poor design     On: 2007-06-30

I bought my first PUR faucet mount about 4-5 years ago. It was a vertical mount that lasted about 2.5 years. Since there is a 5 year warranty I called the company and they quickly and graciously sent me a newer version.

The sent model was a horizontal mount and supposed to be a slightly better mode. It was great for about 9 months, then the housing cracked and water began running down the sides and spraying out slightly. Again I got a replacement. The second horizontal mount lasted less than 6 months before cracking and water spraying all over. The faucet mount had not been hit or impacted in any way . (I live alone, so I am certain of this.) At this point I decided to just send an email to Pur I emailed the company, asking if they had any products that held up without cracking of the housing because I love the filtration itself. When I got no response in over three months, I sent the email out again, and then I received an email with an apology, and informing me that I would be receiving a coupon by mail. The coupon entitled me to buy any PUR product at PURs expense.

I got another three stage filter system, this time returning to the vertical mount, hoping it would last a couple of years like my first one. It has lasted only a couple of months--through only one filter change--and now every time I turn the water up to a medium flow it shoots out several inches to the right. If I keep the flow slow, the water, instead, runs along the outside of the mount as well as through the mount, mixing potentially contaminated water with the other water. I have tightened the mount and adjusted it, as well. The reality is that the filter portion is pulling away from the mount, allowing some water to leak through the mount and out the side. If I lift the filter up as the water flows, ithe gap is pretty well closed and the water runs more efficiently along its intended course.
easy to install, works well     On: 2007-06-26

my water here in atlanta tastes better, likely since i know it is cleaner having this filter installed on the sink.

ive had another one of these filters at home for nearly 5 years, and it works quite durably. Good flow of filtered water too.

Ive purchased two or three of these things and will recommend it every time. Way better than other sink-mounted filter competitors, this unit saves space in the fridge since you dont have to have that filtering pitcher thing around.
Crisp, Clean tasting water from your faucett     On: 2007-06-18

I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of the water. I was expecting it to taste more like bottled water and just "less dirty" than tap water, but I believe it tastes even better than most bottled waters. The third stage of the filtration is what I believe makes a difference, and it is worth getting the 3 stage versus the 2 stage. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because the replacement filters are so costly. Nevertheless, this is more economical in the long run than buying bottled water, not to mention the convenience of getting it from the faucett versus dragging a case of bottled water up a flight of stairs every week!
GREAT     On: 2007-05-05

I love this product -- have been using since it first came out. I just bought a replacement. I also recently read that these filters produce, in some cases, cleaner water than bottled water. I feel good about using this for my familys drinking water. Hint -- you may need to replace your kitchen faucet to one that is high.
Don't waste the money!     On: 2007-04-18

Ive had two PUR water faucet mounted water filters - this type and the slightly more expensive one with the on-off "switch" for unfiltered water. The last one, of the "swivel" type, lasted less than 4 months. First it started leaking. The attachment mechanism is cheap plastic and constantly needs tightening, which is not as easy as they lead you to believe. After actually having to remove it and reinstall it twice, because it more or less started to fall off the faucet, the entire housing cracked diagonally and is currently held on by duct tape! PUR must be aware of these problems as when I called they offered to send a coupon for a free replacement and did so. ALSO, the filters really only last 1 month or less. To be fair, perhaps the area where I live has water with unusually high particulates, but I honestly dont thats it. To be fair, Ive had both BRITA and Teledyne-Waterpik filters starting back in 1995 and none of them last more than 6 months tops. The BRITA was the best in terms of water taste and useful features, such as three choices for water output: filtered, unfiltered stream & spray for dish washing. But the switch broke after a few months.

We do not have unusually high use of the filter, having no children or a constant parade of guests using it. Theres just the two of us, so we should have got a lot more life out of the filters and the entire system than we did. We only bought the second one when the BRITA died in December, because we unearthed an entire box of filters from the previous PUR and decided to make use of them.

Id give this a miss unless you really need it right now and this is what you have to spend - or have a gift certificate so youre essentially getting it for free. But be prepared to have to replace it in three or four months. Maybe youll get lucky! A person alone who is hardly at home and does no cooking will probably double or even triple the life of unit and filter.

PURR FECT FOR PETS!!     On: 2007-04-04

I PURCHASED MY UNIT AT WALMART FOR $19.84 THE BOX CONTAINED THE FILTER UNIT AND TWO FILTERS.INSTALLATION WAS VERY VERY EASY.
THE MAIN USE OF THIS FILTER IS TO PROVIDE OUR PETS WITH FILTERED WATER.THE VET I WORK WITH SUGGESTED FILTERED WATER AFTER TWO OF OUR CATS HAD URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS AND THE LAB WORK SHOWED HIGH CONCENTRATION OF MINERALS.BOTTLED WATER GETS EXPENSIVE WHEN YOU ARE WATERING 4 DOGS, 14 CATS A PET CHICKEN AND ONE SMALL AQUARIUM!
WE GET OUR DRINKING WATER VIA OUR FRIDGE WHERE IT IS ALREADY FILTERED AND VERY COLD!
BECAUSE WE USE IT ONLY FOR THE ANIMAL WATER THE FILTERS LAST LONGER.I AM SURE IF WE USED IT FOR OUR DAILY REGULAR USE THE FILTERS WOULD NOT LAST VERY LONG. I GAVE IT 4 STARS DUE TO THE VERY SLOW FLOW OF WATER THROUGH THE FILTER, BUT I PLACE THE CONATINER UNDER THE FAUCET TURN ON THE FILTER AND DO SOMETHING ELSE WHILE THE CONTAINER FILLS UP. IT IS AN ECONOMICAL, EASY TO USE UNIT.

I have used device previously and couldnt find the one I wanted locally. It works very well and makes a big difference in taste of water. I like the red line feature that tells you when to change the filter.

Negative: Previous one cracked before red line indicated a new filter was needed. But positives out-weigh the negatives, so I ordered two to have a spare on hand.

Nice filter / poor quality housing     On: 2006-11-10

Ive been through two of these filters and both have the same problem.. the bottom seal of the unit leaks and sprays water. Id rate it lower because of this but it otherwise does a nice job. When it break I just buy a new one and return the old one in the same packaging.
Tastes Good     On: 2006-11-03

Easy to install - no tools needed. The water is so much better, no residual chlorine taste. The indicator is an excellent idea, people in our office where I installed it now drink faucet water rather than bottled all the time.
Now after a year of being installed it leaks from several places, a good cheap stopgap measure but due to high usage (a filter lasts about one month here) we have gone for an undercounter filter which should last 6 to 12 months before we change the filter.
Pur water faucet     On: 2006-10-25

The water tastes delicious and free of any metals. My only concern is that it doesnt filter out flouride, which is not good for people with thyroid problems.
Great water, but poor construction     On: 2006-08-31

Ive been using this product for almost two years and its been kind of a rough ride. The water tastes great and the cartridges usually last at least two months for my family, and we drink a lot of water.

The problem lies in the construction of the unit itself. I have to replace the little rubber o-ring inside the hinge of the filter unit every two months or so as it begins to tear and allows the faucet to leak considerably. Also, a leak has formed at the edge of the life indicator window, threatening to shoot the user in the abdomen every time the filter is used.

The water is great. The cardridges last an acceptable amount of time but are expensive (as are they all.) The construction is somewhat shoddy and youll want to replace yours within a year or two.
Cost Cost Cost     On: 2006-08-25

We have always purchased bottles of water at the Grocer for approx $2.50/gallon at the cheapest (buying in 24 oz bottles.) If you figure the Pure filter at purchase, the price is $0.30/gal. Then the price goes down with the purchase of replacement filters to $0.20/gal or less depending on the quantity purchased at one time (as low as $0.10/gal.) So we bought the 3-stage filter for the faucet and now fill our water bottles and store them in the fridge. We seldom see bargains like this. I trust PUR and the water tastes GREAT! We drink a lot of water. This has DEFINITELY saved us money.
Good enough for better tasting water     On: 2006-08-08

There are so many chemicals and drugs in the water that only a really high end filter can get that stuff out. Pur is good for larger particles and chlorine removal. I understand the frustration of some who had trouble with installation. I had to go to several hardware stores and find someone who could think of a good solution to fit my faucet. This is a real pain if your faucet isnt standard size. Perhaps you should consider the standalone ones if you dont want to hassle with the faucet fit. Anyway for a lower end filter the water tastes much better, and at least it gets rid of rust and lead.
this thing is horrible!!     On: 2006-07-16

i ordered this filter on 23 april 2006. i followed the instructions to the letter & the filtered stream was barely more than a trickle. i thought that i should give it a chance, so i let it go. the indicator NEVER moved & i began to get concerned about it. well, EXACTLY one month (Amazons return time-frame) later, the stupid thing was LESS than a trickle. i emailed Proctor & Gamble thru the PUR website & phoned their toll-free number several times (NO ANSWER/NO VOICEMAIL) & received NO reply to my email until 12 july, by which time, i had already contacted Amazon & returned the thing & received a full refund. guess what the P&G email said:
"Thanks for your email about Pur. Unfortunately, because of technical difficulties and high volume, we are unable to answer your message. Were working hard to resolve these issues, but wanted to make you aware of the situation.

If you are in need of a response, we invite you to call us at 1-800-787-5463 Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 EDT."

BAD, BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!! i have reordered a faucet-mount filter & so far, i am VERY pleased!!
Relatively inexpensive way to filter water     On: 2006-05-12

I was pleasantly surpised to see just how easily this filter installed on my kitchen faucet. Although I had great tasting water before its installation, I feel better now knowing that the water is "cleaner" than before. There are only two drawbacks that I see, namely, the filter often gets in the way when filling a pot for on the stove, and the replacement filters are not cheap---they each cost about as much as HALF the price of the original filter system. I have had my filter system for a bit more than three months, and the replacement indicator just became visible...time to spend money for a new filter cartridge!
Threw mine away     On: 2006-03-25

This would not install on my kitchen faucet because it it a pull out type. I tried installing it in my bathroom only to have the knob freeze up.
