![]() Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier By: Honeywell Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 115 More Information Love It Love this air purifier. Very little noise....sounds like the low hum of a fan. I have two, one in each of my kids rooms. The noise the purifier puts out is more like white noise. I think it helps my kids sleep better. The only downside to this product is the size and it needing to be 3 ft away from furniture and walls. But, everything else is great. Also, really like the fact that it has 3 speeds and has the light that notifies you when the filter needs to be cleaned. Highly recommend it. While it Worked - It did the Job, BUT I had, note HAD, two (2) of these Honeywell units, and overall, they were noisy, but they did the job, but just FOR a few years, then both of motors burnt out... the first unit warned me with a squealing noise for about a week and then just froze up... the second one, well, it was the silent sufferer of the two, never complained but just stopped one evening within months of the first. If it would have be just one of the air purifiers, well, I would have though bad luck... but both? NOT. I had the motors checked out and both were DOA... my option was to send them back to Honeywell and have them replaced for almost price that I paid... the other was to buy another. That is what I did, but, not Honeywell. For the price of a Honeywell the motor should run for many years, not just a few. Not recommended. Honeywell Air Purifier I found it very easy to use and operate! We bought it because of my wifes allergies which were worse this year due to more than average rain fall. We set it up in our bedroom and could smell the difference in the air in our room about two hours after turning it on. We sleep with on every night and my wifes congestion went away after about four days and hasnt come back since weve had this purifier. Is it a coincidence? We think its the air purifier that makes the difference. This air purifier has three speeds, the higher the speed, the higher the sound which isnt bad at all. Excellent product We bought this after reading the reviews, and it is what we were looking for. Very silent, and works great. My husband breathes so much better since we got it, it makes a great difference. I recommend this to anyone with allergies and asthma. Okay product Bought the product because I used to wake up with red eyes. I was also very tired. Thought my allergies were really creeping up at night (when your immune system relaxes). Bought the filter like two weeks ago. First, pretty loud on both high and medium setting. Second, pretty big for a room air purifier. Third, seems to kind of work. Have been using it for two weeks, and it seems to kind of work. Ill give it a few more weeks to make a final decision. Might have been prudent to not get one at all or try for a better (more expensive) one. on my 2nd SilentComfort air cleaner The motor died on my first Honeywell machine after about 5 years of use. Then I bought a hepa Holmes air cleaner because I wanted something with a smaller footprint. Alas, the Holmes started to emit a foul odor after a couple of months and, after figuring out it had nothing to do with the filter and pre-filter, I got rid of it. When I bought my current Honeywell from Amazon, it was the same model as the old one EXCEPT I no longer have to replace the main filter core. Those in my old Honeywell machine used to cost $60-75 each to replace! Yes, there is a loud whooshing sound when this machine is set on High but it is fairly quiet when its on Medium or Low. Ive heard what the industrial-sized Honeywells in doctors offices sound like when theyre on - akin to a small jet engine. So Honeywells noise level rating is relative to their other not-so-silent models. I have moderate allergies and when I feel my chest tightening up from too much dust building up at home, I first set the machine to HIGH for a few minutes, then lower the setting to Medium to continue the air cleaning. This makes the noise level more tolerable. I do notice that my allergies are less severe when I use the machine. At the time I was researching air purifiers, the better ones were considerably more - about $600 for the same room capacity. I buy the pre-filter in sheets that I cut up into 8 long strips. These cost about $15 and last me about a year for moderate use on the air cleaner.. rather inexpensive upkeep. Honeywell air purifier Product received ahead of schedule. I installed in our bedroom and from the first night it has provided excellent results and my wife, who has numerous allegies, has been able to sleep at night. Only complaint is the size, but then I just didnt look at the footprint when I ordered. Ill be carefull the next one I order. Great product. quiet I mainly like this unit because it is quiet. I also like the fact that it takes in air at the base, where dust is most likely to exist. It is far quieter than the 50250, but also moves less air. I would say its good for up to ~350 square feet (on medium or high). Great for a bedroom on low (and you wont really hear it at all on low). The only thing I dont like is the fact that the prefilter is a little tiny strip that you have to painstakingly cut from a larger prefilter sheet. You will get black carbon all over the place in the process, so do it outside or before vacuuming. Yes, it saves money on prefilters because one prefilter purchase of $10 will last around 4-5 changes, however, I wish the prefilters came pre-cut to the correct size for this unit (they come in a big sheet to fit the 50250 unit only). Other than that, its great. One more issue: it is rather large. Almost as large as the 50250. I dont mind but Im sure some people will. Ive had a smaller unit in the past, but it just does not do as good a job as a larger one like this, so therefore I prefer a larger unit. I gave it 5 stars because of its great performance in a bedroom and low noise level: if you want really clean air, use a big filter. Nice unit - does the job This is on the low end, price-wise, for an air purifier for the room size, but it does a good job. My wife was sneezing like mad due to a shedding dog. This (and a new vacuum cleaner) solved the problem. Quiet and effective. Good unit. Noticed the Difference Immediately I noticed the difference immediately, this helped my dust and pollen allergies significantly. Its very big, be prepared for that. I noticed there are some reviews complaining about the noise, at medium setting its quieter than a standard desk fan. Wonderful! This air purifier really does the job! Its quiet and has made a difference in the way I sleep -- it gets the allergens out of the air. Useless for smoke Ive used lots of filters before, and most have been great. Even the little ones from Target/Walmart did wonders for my health, as well as cutting back on smells from the outside. This filter... I had tall expectations, and it failed to meet them. My apartment fills with smoke every morning from the people downstairs, so I wanted a filter to cut back on that health hazard. This filter was well rated by others, so I forked over the excessive money... and it did NOTHING for the smoke. Maybe the smoke was gone a few minutes earlier, Im not sure, but it certainly didnt keep the smoke from affecting our breakfast. I still had to throw open all of the windows and hide in the back rooms until it was gone. I think the real problem with this filter is its lack of circulating power. Instead of blowing air like a real filter, there is no force to speak of, so no air really gets circulated. I think the filter is relying on natural convection to clean the entire room instead of helping it along, and I think it is supposed to be a feature because it helps keep the noise down. The bad news, though, is that it does little for smoke from the outside as a result, which comes in really strong once in awhile and then dissipates of its own accord once the smoker has stopped polluting the air. it's too noisy I was happy initial because I dont have to change the filter on Honeywell and is cheaper than Rabbit Air BioGS. I cant stand the noise level even at lowest.I can not work on computer and have it ON. Its good only if you are not in the room. I got 2 years ago "Rabbit Air BioGS" - that is very quiet, I could sleep when is turned ON - you can not hear at all, but Rabbit is very expensive over $300 and I paid $55 for a new filter that you have to replace every 18 month. If you intend to stay in the room when is ON - forget about Honeywell. The manufacture and/or amazon should say what is the noise level. Second time's the charm ... We ordered this in an "emergency," during a pretty bad allergy event. So we were VERY disappointed when it arrived overnight --- and refused to even turn on. Amazon, in its accustomed efficient fashion, got a new one to us the next day. Its difficult to be completely objective about a product when the first example never functioned. This second unit, however, works beautifully! During the day it sits on the center of the bed, with the door closed. If theres any dust left in the room, its pretty elusive. The reason is pretty clear --- the dust is very visibly trapped in the pre-filter, and, presumably, the smaller stuff is trapped in the HEPA section. The unit is quite light and easy to handle, and the filters are easy to clean. The HEPA "doughnut" filter is very large. As far as sound goes, I wouldnt want to watch TV with it on "high" setting, but "low" would be manageable at night, if absolutely necessary. This seems --- so far! --- to be a very good unit. It does whats required of it. Quiet? Hardly. I guess you all have a different standard of what "quiet" means. This thing is really loud. Yes the fans seem to be good quality so you dont hear any mechanical noise at all. The problem is just that even the lowest setting is blowing an awful lot of air, so you hear a "whooshing" sound. Its okay during the day, but for sleeping it should really have a lower setting. Also it is very large, about the size of a room air conditioner or mini-fridge. My guess is the sound volume of this thing is in the range of 30-40 dB , and it should be 20-30 dB. For comparison, a good quiet PC fan is in the 10-20 range. Works great but a bit noisy I purchased this for my mother in law who smokes in one room of her 3 bedroom home. While the unit does work amazingly well and the house doesnt smell from smoke, the humming and fan blowing can be a bit annoying and loud. Great price and item! This air filter is being used in a large room with two cat litter boxes and it had done a great job of eliminating the dust from the air. It was a great buy and worth the $130. It does have a quiet humming sound while in use. Does the job, cleans the air of smoke well (medical marijuana patient) I needed an air cleaner for my apartment due to the fact that I am a medical marijuana patient in Los Angeles and I keep the windows closed most of the time and the air conditioner running. The unit is a little larger than I expected but was able to find a location that has it out of the way of foot traffic and also away from the ceiling fan. A magazine placed on top of the unit also helps to hide it at first glance. The sound that others have commented on is not an issue to me. I have used the unit on high only (no jokes please) and it sounds similar to a 20" box fan on low setting. Noticeable but not overbearing and if you live on a major street like I do the white noise is actually nice for sleeping yet does not interfere with sound from the computer speakers or tv. Waking up the first day after using it all night had me convinced this was worth the purchase. The air smelled clean and my nasal passages were clear, also I did not have the normal "bong cough" that many smokers have after years of medicating with medical marijuana. Another plus to me was that this unit does not have the uv light or ozone generating capability. It just cleans the air and also I have read of health issues from the units that generate ozone into closed areas. As expected This product works well and does exactly what I expected it to do: purify air. I would reccommend. Its big but it does the job I dont have alot to say about this product other than I agree with other reviews it is rather large. I do not mind that and it seems to be doing a good job of filtering air in my apartment. My second one We are on our second SilentComfort Air Purifier. We have had one of these that ran 24/7/365 for about 8 years and the motor bearing finally gave out. I think that was a lot of use and we got our moneys worth on the first one. We replaced it with one exactly like it because we really missed the pleasant white noise it adds to our bedroom. Both the clean air and the soothing noise help us to sleep. Hope they are still making these 8 years from now. Thrilled with this Purifier This purifier was shipped and delivered just as promised. Great deal and I love this purifier. It is much quieter than I was preparing myself for. And I love the design of it. Lightweight and easy to open to access the filters. I was stunned to see how much junk was in the air of my home. No wonder I have to dust constantly. Love this purifier and would recommend it to anyone!! Perfect for Large Bedroom. This is my second Honeywell Brand HEPA air purifier. The first one i have is in my living room and is not the SilentComfort series. This one, the 18155 is SO MUCH QUIETER. On its highest setting its a little bit lower then the noise my new dishwasher makes. That makes it a little loud for sleeping but its tolerable. The system i have come up with is to have it run 24/7. During the day and evening before i go to sleep its on HIGH with the bedroom door closed. At night when i am sleeping i put it to MEDIUM, with the door still closed, and its much easier to deal with. You will notice a change in air quality within the first 24 hours of use. You can smell the difference in the air. I suffer from SEVERE allergies and this unit has made my nights so much better. My quality of sleep has improved drastically. I would recommend this item to any fellow sufferers. Very good air purifier with misleading name This air purifier arrived two days ago and thus far we are really pleased with it. We ordered it to help with allergies. So far we have noticed a reduction in our allergies and the air smells like clean air...which is quite the accomplishment in a home with 3 large dogs. The only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is because I think the name of the product is misleading. It is called the SilentComfort purifier but it is certainly not silent...I think QuietComfort would be a more accurate name. On high, the purifier is a bit louder than I expected...I can hear it upstairs and it is downstairs. We ran it on high for the first day and we will run it on high while cleaning the house...otherwise, we will keep it on low. On low it is very tolerable...just a very faint white noise. I think it would perfect to use as white noise when sleeping at night. This purifier is pretty good sized but not quite as large as I thought it would be based on some of the other reviews. All in all, a good product at a reasonable price. I love that it has a permanent HEPA filter and it is not an ionic purifier. I would recommend it. very good very good product nocomplants, small noisy but not bad at all. couldnt be happier. i recomend this product. Is actually creating an odor in my home My husband bought this purifier about several months ago to contend with the rapid dust accumulation on our bedrooms wood floors. If I had filled out this review a week or two after we got it, it would have gotten five stars, because it was everything we wanted and more. Our floors werent dusty every three days (it took a couple weeks for them to need cleaned again), and it didnt take away from our quiet peaceful bedroom. Perfect. But about two months after we had it, it started creating a dog-pee-like odor (we dont have any pets or smoke or any other odor problems in our house) and we turned it off for a few days to verify the purifier as the source. Confirmed. When we turned it back on, the odor returned within thirty minutes. We checked the thing out and changed both the filter and the "prefilter," figuring that the problem was along these lines, but turning everything back on, the smell remained. Weve googled possible solutions, looked at the manual, everything that we can think of that can be done. Im ready to throw the thing out -- perhaps we just got a lemon, but I wouldnt recommend this purifier to anyone. Dont waste your money. (Although if anyone more experienced than I has a suggestion, please help!) A Breath of Fresh Air This is a great item. It shipped very quickly. I seem to have a lot of dust and cat dander and hair that floats through the air. I also suffer from asthma. The air purifier helps tremendously and gives much relief with my asthma. It is very, very easy to clean. I dont think they could have made it any simpler. This has been a great purchase and I am totally satisfied. Seems well built and works well Like a previous reviewer, I too have never owned an air purifier before. I live in a small, 1 bedroom apartment (about 950 sq/ft). I was concerned that the specs mentioned that it (and most others) are rated for a certain, smaller sized room. Dont be put off by that. It may not recirculate the air 15 times per hour for the whole apartment, but who really needs that? Its just a spec. For my apartment, it refreshes the air perfectly. Honestly, I noticed the difference within one minute of turning it on. Living in Oregon (like many other places), you cant reasonably open the windows in the winter. Stale air and cooking odors quickly make things unpleasant. This has made an unbelievable difference. The unit seems quite well built, and running on the low setting (which is where I leave it) there is very little noise.. certainly not enough to bother me. I was impressed by the apparent quality - there are some cheap components internally, but not things that would effect the quality of the unit. I had no experience with unpleasant smells as were mentioned in some previous reviews. I was a bit unsure when I purchased this, but I am so glad that I did. What a difference fresh air makes. Ill update this review once Ive had it a bit longer, and talk more to the quality. For now, its a new purchase and so far, Im thrilled with it. Hope this helps. I'm very pleased! After running this unit for just one week Ive noticed a great reduction in dust from our fireplace which used to settle on everything. We have it sitting very close to our TV but it runs very quietly - even on high - and doesnt interfere with the volume on the TV. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because it has a pre-filter I was unaware of which has to be replaced several times a year. At $15 each that could add up quickly. However, I purchased a smaller Honeywell unit for the bedroom which also has a pre-filter and the instructions say that it can be rinsed and air dried so I dont see why I cant do the same with this one. All things considered, Im very happy with this unit. good air filter i am very happy with this product. we had lots of dust and dander in the air , after running this unit for a couple days the amount of dust you can see has dropped waaaaay down.the pre filter collects alot and needs to be cleaned about once a week . i think im breathing easier at night too. Great if you have dogs I bought this to get rid of the dog smell my house gets every winter when the house is closed up. With multiple dogs, this model did a great job at eliminating dog odors in the house. It was louder than I expected, but no where near as loud as their more current models (like the 50250 on high, which I also bought). I wish they would start making these in darker colors or black. After a few days, dirt was already building up on it making it look nasty - so, one more thing to clean every couple of days :) Pros: it does the job and is fairly quiet (but not silent) Cons: louder than I expected - and the manufacturer (Kaz Inc, not Honeywell) says to keep these purifier 3 feet from ALL furniture and walls - that is not great in an older home with small rooms. 3 feet from all walls and furniture puts the unit in an odd location in almost any home. Overall, I would suggest buying one of their current models - the 18155 was made in 2005 and no longer listed on the manufacturers website, so this is a discontinued item sold as a current model on Amazon (as of December 12, 2009). Not a big deal if you know what you are buying, but the 50250 model moves A WHOLE HECK OF A LOT of air and on medium is only a little louder than the 18155. The 50250 also has a high (aka Turbo speed) so if you need to clear up an odor from cooking, or whatever, the turbo speed will clean the air quickly and then you can go back to medium speed and get the same performance as the 18155. Unsanitary This box had been sitting in sewage, and had been put in a plastic bag by the shipper. The top of the box was okay, so I opened it, saw that the product was bagged in plastic inside the box, so opened the bag. At least the product appeared clean, and heaven knows, I certainly didnt want to attempt to repack this item in that dreadful box to return it, so I kept it with misgivings. I wont purchase from this company again. Quiet? Not so much.... "SilentComfort" leads one to think this air purifier would be very quiet. Im disappointed at the amount of sound it makes on high and medium speeds. It is seriously distracting to have it running while listening to the TV, and Ive moved it into another room. Honeywell 1, us 0. does what I wanted I expected to get help breathing. New friend smokes and has a dog. I got some relief right away So quiet you'll wonder if it's working Bought one of these for my mom first. She liked it so much I bought one for myself and got rid of my old noisy model. This one is amazingly quiet. At first I thought maybe it wasnt working properly because it was so quiet, but soon I began to feel my allergies reduce. I dont have to raise the volume of my TV to hear over it AND I feel that its really cleared the air of allergens. This is the best air purifier Ive owned, and Ive had several different ones. Honeywell 18155 Air Purifier My Wife said I needed something in my man cave to clean the air. So I bought the Honeywell 18155 air purifier. It really does a good job. I keep it running 24/7 and my wife and daughter says it does a very good job of cleaning the air in the entire basement. About 1000 square feet down here. It is very quite and so far very effective. It fits very well under a coffee table in the center of the room. We are glad its here. Helped my allergies I received this air purifier yesterday and as others have reported they noticed an overnight improvement in their allergies. I seem to have developed a sensitivity to mold, which many homes and apartments have here in San Francisco due to the moist air. My doctor recommended an air purifier. This unit dramatically made a difference overnight in my allergies and I highly recommend it. It is the size of a small ottoman and is supposed to be placed 3 Feet from the wall or furniture for optimum functionality. Some people have felt that it was noisy. When the unit was on high I did notice that I had to turn up the volume slightly on the TV. Although, I just placed the unit on the medium speed and it was quieter. Its not noisy and is about the same as having a fan running, like if you had a small air conditioner. In fact the sound is quite soothing and is of a "white" noise type, so it blocks out other noise. Overall, we noticed that the air in the room is cleaner. I also like that you can vacuum the Hepa filter to clean it and that there are replacement carbon pre-filters. Poor Quality This unit powered itself off after only running a few minutes after I received it, and would never come back on. I emailed the customer service department and I did receive a prompt and courteous reply. But the unit had to be returned and I did not repurchase. Large but Effective We purchased the Honeywell 18155 for our living room after buying the 17000 for our bedroom, and seeing the benefits it provided to my allergic husbands symptoms. This product is highly effective in purifying our living room atmosphere (a room about 17x22). In our urban condo, we deal with pollution, pollen, and cat dander. This air purifier is surprisingly quiet, has 3 speed settings, and has a permanent HEPA filter which we clean out using our HEPA rated vacuum cleaner - - saving us money on replacement filters. I wont lie. The thing is really big. Our home is only 850 sq. ft. and I am amazed that I willingly dedicate the square footage to this thing that it demands. Its about the size of a low nightstand, or one of those Gatorade containers you see at NFL games on TV that they dump over the coachs head :) Also, it isnt completely silent - - but the noise is not at all intrusive. I actually think its quieter than our Honeywell 17000. In my research, I read that for an effective air purifier I think you have to put up with a decent-sized unit. For the benefits it provides, we dont mind the sound or the size. We leave the unit on 24/7 on "Low," and once a week after I thoroughly vacuum and clean our home, I run it on "high" for about 2 hours. Overall, I recommend this product to allergy sufferers, provided youre fully aware of its size and mild noise. For the price, its a very effective unit - - and if you want something equally effective but smaller, youre talking about hundreds of dollars more in price. Anything but silent Probably an effective and efficient air cleaner. Too soon to know for sure. But it is noisy. Silent setting is anything but. Seller tries hard but not there yet. Not Silent, Quite Large Ive had this Air Purifier for about a month, and seems well-built and appears to do a good job. But, a potential buyer should be aware of a couple of things. It is not silent, especially on the 2 higher settings, and they recommend the highest. I dont know how they get away with calling this "SilentComfort". It sounds like a fan. Putting it on the low setting and a soft surface helps. It is quite large, and, if you follow directions, its supposed to be about a foot or so away from any wall or object. That doesnt leave many good options, unless you have a very large area. Outstanding! In short:The Honeywell HEPA has solved our problem...we can breathe again and sleep very well. The unit is very quiet, lightweight and has a handle to easily move it from one room to another. It has a permanent filter and is a True Hepa at a very good price. Need I say more. Hepa Air It seems to work well but there has been no significant changes in our bedroom area, maybe over time well see a greater change. so far, so good Ive been using my air purifier in my classroom for the past month and have not had any problems so far. As mentioned in other reviews, this machine does take up some space. The low setting is not very loud. More like a quiet hum. The highest setting is noticeable and not so "silent", but it is do-able. Amazing Airpurifier I was looking for a airpurifier that was silent and had a permenant filter I didnt want to change it all the time, I did alot of research on air purifiers and came across this one. The reviews on this unit were amazing. This has been the best one I have ever bought. It has a true hepa filter with this unit which picks up very small particles in the air. My child has allergies and ever since I started using this unit her allergy symptoms are just about gone. The price is very reasonable and the prefilter that come with this unit is amazing ,I used this purifier for 3 weeks and the prefilter picked up so much dust in that short time ,and I dust the house regularly, so you know the airpurifier is working well. Dont hesitate on buying this purifier its worth every penny. Thank You Honeywell for the best products. Fair and not-so-quiet This is a rather bulky air purifier that has an advantage of having re-usable HEPA filter. However, although it generated loud noise even under low power setting, its not as powerful as expected. Its purification efficiency seemed similar to my small non-HEPA air purifier. Compare to a 3M Filtrete airpurifier that I have, this model has similar noise level but less purification efficiency. Perhaps the difference lies in airflow or filter design. Works but falls short Good room air cleaner but limited to about 10 X 8. It runs quietly but does not appear to have as much air flow as I would like and the filters require frequent replacement. I would be happier if the unit was priced around 75.00 for the cost I expected more. It works fine but for the money fails to fully meet my expectations. Large paperweight Judging by many other reviews, what happened to me seems to be quite rare, so make of it what you will. But our Honeywell just completely stopped working. I bought this primarily for my wifes allergies and we used it for a couple of months during the pollen season. It worked as others have described. It was put away for several months and then plugged in again and its simply dead. There is no response at all even though nothing happened to the unit and it simply sat dormant for a few months. Hate to give it the rock-bottom review but there was no reason for this thing to just stop working. I kept thinking there must be a simple reset button on it or something but it seems fairly simple. The electronic controls just quietly passed away while sleeping, it would seem. Silent Comfort - says it all! This is a fantastic air purifier. I bought two of them to replace Oreck Tabletop XL Professional Air Purifiers (a costly waste of money). I use one of the Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier in my bedroom and leave it on the high setting at all times. On this setting it is very quiet and doesnt disturb my rest at all. On the lowest setting it is so quiet I can barely hear it. Since placing this unit in my bedroom I sleep straight through the night and I wake with clear sinuses and no congestion. The second Honeywell is in my living room. My living room and dining room share a large combined space and this unit is small for the area. Because they are quiet I plan on getting another unit for the dining area - two of them should handle the area well. I do a thorough dusting and cleaning every week, so I was shocked at the amount of dust, cat hair and "stuff" that was trapped in the charcoal pre-filter the first time I cleaned it, and in subsequent cleanings. I dont smoke, I do have three cats and have allergies to dust and pollen. These purifiers are truly a life saver! Silent Comfort - A GREAT product! This is a GREAT air purifier. I dont smoke, I do have three cats and have allergies to dust and pollen. These purifiers are truly a life saver! Does not deliver After much research, I puchased this filter for my bedroom to help control dust allergens. After several months of running the unit nearly non-stop, there has been absolutely no reduction in dust. I vaccuum every week and still have to hand-dust, and my bedroom is not that large. What I do like about the unit is that it is portable, so I will sometimes move it to the kitchen or basement to help control odors. Good for a small bedroom. Lots of pros and cons. First of all, I have to chuckle about the person that found packing material in their filter and broke it all apart. The motor housing is made of styrofoam, in an effort to quiet the motor and blower wheel. Dont take it apart and take out the packing material out of it, its supposed to be there. Also, the styrofoam is porous, so, dont let it get wet inside, or it can actually be a source of mold, mildew, and musty smells. It may also retain odors like dog, cat, smoke, etc in this styrofoam if you get it used, or sell it. Replacing the hepa filter or pre-filter may not be enough. Also, its pretty poor at dealing with odors, as the carbon pre-filter is much smaller, and the air doesnt spend very long in the carbon part of it, so its just not that effective. Just the way it is. You can help it out by wrapping the pre-filter around the HEPA filter, and think of it as a post filter. This wont get dusty, because the air gets blown through the filter from the inside out, so the dust is trapped in the inside of the filter, rather than the outside, like most round filters. Air spends more time in the post-filter as the air leaves the filter evenly, and on low it actually works pretty well as absorbing odors if used this way. If you want to be frugal, you can re-use the post filter as a pre-filter if you cut it down to size. Just make sure you have a pre-filter installed in the bottom as well (And dont use the dusty pre-filter as a post filter, or youll re-pollute your filtered air.), as without the pre-filter properly installed, the HEPA filter wont last long. Its designed to chirp when the HEPA filter needs cleaning or replacing, as the fluctuations caused by the plugged filter will make the styrofoam motor housing rub against the blower wheel, eventually damaging it. If you dont install a pre-filter in the bottom this will happen very quickly, and the unit will basically just annoy you rather than filter any air. If you keep the pre-filter clean, and keep it on low in your bedroom, it will keep the dust from getting too bad. Its really quiet, as the HEPA filter acts like a muffler, and the motor housing is made of sound absorbing material. Id vacuum the HEPA filter with your HEPA vacuum every time you change the pre-filter. I can see why they designed it like this, but I can also see the downsides. If you want a filter thats QUIET and doesnt disturb the air a lot, this a good choice. Its not good for entryways, pool/spa rooms, pet rooms, living rooms, for use as a fan, or a smoke-eater. Its for bedrooms. If you like to have air blowing on you as you sleep, pick the 17005 instead (It makes more noise, but moves all its exhaust in one direction.), or better yet, have the 17005 on a nightstand on low 24/7 blowing on your pillow, and have it moving air in the direction of a 18155, so the 17005 can provide fresh air for you as you sleep, and the 18155 keeps the dust down so you dont have to vacuum as often. Yes, I have 2 HEPA filters in my bedroom. 2 on low are MUCH quieter and more effective than 1 on high. The 17005 also has a timer and remote- built right in. The 18155 is much quieter than the old round style 11520, and work just as well for dust and allergies. The old venerable 11520 is much more durable, but really loud on high, and didnt move much air on low. I bet the 18155 is quieter on high than the old 11520 is on low. BIGGER than expected I received the product today, and to my shock its as tall and round as a short end table or ottoman. I was not expecting furniture, but rather a small appliance - like my mixer or humidifier. As for functionality, I have no complaints. But dont be fooled if youre looking for a discreet air purifier. Runs fine, but... This purifier is quite during the low setting. The high setting cranks out the power. My only gripe is that you cant put this on an automatic timer. If you do, one the timer shuts off the unit, the unit will not turn back on once the timer comes back on...you have to manuualy turn on the unit. It was delivered within 5 days. Its also lightweight and can be moved from room to room easiely. If you want "SILENT" and "EFFECTIVE" Air Purifier L00K Here! Folks, dont waste your time with those Ionizers that I found can actually worsen allergy symptoms by releasing the chemical ozone. I do my research & this baby went straight into my bedroom. I was and still am amazed at how quiet this thing is. Imagine the sound of air coming from the central air vents in your house & thats about how loud it is. Not very. And I dont see the amount of dust floating through the air anymore. Just keep your bedroom door closed as much as possible & let this beauty run on high all the time. DONE! ...hATCh - "You can trust me, Im an air traffic controller"... sleeping like a baby My husband was having difficulty with allergies and our family doctor recommended a hepa air cleaner. After hours and hours of research, I decided on the Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier. It had been a miracle worker. My husband has been sleeping like a baby and has regained his energy. We have no problems with the sound of the machine. It is relatively large, but that isnt a problem. I have recommended one to my son and several friends! These Work GREAT! First off - my husband and I smoke and have 2 dogs in the house. We put one in our kitchen, one in our great room and one in our master bedroom. We notices a difference in a couple of hours after we turned them on! We even bought 2 for my mother in-law and they have helped her asthma! They are not too loud that you cant sleep and after a while you dont notice the noise at all! Great Purifier!!!!! Smallest pre-filter not many vents This Model filters the air from conventional air cleaners as it draws the air through thr tiny prefilter located at the bottom up through the center of the unit then pushes it up through the Hepa filter. This unit is not recommended for those house holds where order control is a major problem; again the pre-filter is a narrow band of carbon treated material that is about only 2" wide. Less than 50% of this unit is the air exchange vents. Thought it looks impressive, this is the poorest design and wasted space of any air purifier we have ever reported on. Save your money and purchase a more effective unit with more air intake and exchange vents. Honeywell Product Name Type Description Best For TrueHEPA True HEPA (99.97% cleaning efficiency at 0.3 microns) The gold standard in air purification continues to be products that feature True HEPA filtration. True HEPA filtration is a mechanical system that utilizes a fan to draw the air in from the room and force it through a glass fiber HEPA paper. HEPA air purifiers are 99.97 percent efficient at removing microscopic particles (as small as 0.3 microns in size). HEPA filters are available in both permanent and replacement options, so consumers can choose which type works best for them. The filter is vacuum-able for easy maintenance, cleaning is recommended every three months. True HEPA air purifiers do not use ionization to remove particles from the air so ozone is not emitted from the filtration process. The best choice for anyone suffering from any type of airborne allergies, asthma or other breathing disorders; great option for babies, children and seniors. HEPAClean(tm) HEPA-Type (99% cleaning efficiency at 2 microns) For general, all-around air purification and particle reduction, permanent HEPA-type filtration offers good cleaning with 99% efficiency at removing airborne particles that pass through the filter. This technology uses a fan to circulate the air. The filter is vacuum-able for easy maintenance (suggested every three months). Offers an affordable option for air purification. HEPA-type filtration does not use ionization to remove particles from the air so ozone is not emitted during the filtration process. Some models do provide optional on/off ionization so the consumer can choose if they want to boost cleaning power and/or add additional freshness to the air. Ideal for those who want to freshen and clean the air in a room or for those suffering from typical airborne allergies; great option for consumers on a budget. Important note: Consumers who have asthma or other breathing conditions should operate these products with the optional ionization turned off (as easy as pushing a button). Portable TRUE HEPA-Type Air Purifier with contemporary design * Recommended for medium to large rooms * Stylish appearance * Ideal for office, bedroom, babies room or kitchen * Helps reduce odors and common household airborne particles * Powerful, quiet air movement * Carrying handle * Replacement filter: Pre-filter 38002 * 3 air cleaning power levels 18155 (230 square ft.) CADR rate: Tabacco-150 Dust-150 Pollon-135 Positives: Perminate TRUE Hepa filter Clean Hepa & pre-filter lights Quiet operation Negitives: Design; More air intake and discharge vents Small Prefilter only 1 1/2" wide Weak Fan We recommend that you operate your Honeywell air cleaner 24 hours a day because indoor air can be quickly contaminated by activity in a room, infiltration of outside air, and generation by sources of contamination. While all the air in a room will not be processed by the air cleaner, the more air circulated through the filter, the more filtered air returned to the room. Portable air cleaners will be much more effective in rooms where all doors and windows are closed. The Honeywell HEPA air cleaner is ready to begin cleaning air as soon as it is removed from the carton and plugged in. Because it circulates air in a 360 degree pattern around the air cleaner, it can be placed on the floor in almost any location. However, for best performance the air outlet slot should not be blocked for at least 1 meter (three feet) in all directions. Due to the large volume of air drawn towards the air cleaner, surrounding areas should be cleaned and/or vacuumed frequently to prevent buildup. This may help keep your home cleaner and may extend the life of your pre-filter. If the unit is placed on light colored carpeting, a small mat or rug should be used to ease cleaning and prevent any permanent staining. This is particularly important in homes with heavier contamination from smoking or fireplaces. Needs more air intake and discharge vents Honeywell Model # 18155 - TRUE HEPA Air Purifier - Dual filter system: Carbon pre-filter for odors and HEPA - type filter helps remove common household airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns from the air passing through it. This unit is contemporary, appealing design and has 360 degree air discharge for maximum air flow with 3 cleaning power levels. Other perks are the Filter reminder label, Hidden controls and carry handle. Works Great! Big difference in the house with the dust...noticed a difference within one day. Thinking about buying 2 more for the rest of the house. Yes it costs some money, but it is VERY worth it Got this to help with alergies for my daughter and myself. Did a bunch of research first before buying this one - aparently there are "HEPA like" and "true HEPA" purifiers. The "HEPA-Like" ones are NOT "true HEPA", and are nowhere near as good. Dont be fooled by the fancy advertising for "ion air" and any of the other garbage. Get the real McCoy and get a TRUE HEPA. Honeywell seems to be the leader in these True HEPA filters - and this one is one of many quality filters from them. When running on HIGH the filter sounds like a box fan. However on LOW you wont even notice it running. There is nothing fancy about this filter, it just does a great job cleaning the air. Sneezing, alergies - all gone. I imagine the biggest cost in manufacturing these beasts is in making the actual HEPA filter inside - as it is MASSIVE. You wont ever see anything like it. One look at it and you will immediatly know why TRUE HEPA filters beat everything else. Overall Im very satisfied with this filter - well worth the money. Im sure the other "TRUE HEPA" filters by HoneyWell are equally good too, only with different features, all depends on what you want. Quiet, seems to work well, but really big and bulky Weve only had this product for around a month. It does seem to help clear out allergens well. Even though you get the dimensions, it is really big. It takes up A LOT of space and you have to keep it a certain distance from walls and furniture which is not easy to do because of its size. Also, if you dont have dark carpet they recommend you put a mat under it or it could stain your rug. It seems to do the job it is supposed to and its not too noisy if set at medium or low. I like that it has a light that lets me know when the HEPA filter and Prefilter need replaced. If it proves the difference between being healthy (my child and I both have asthma) and being sick all the time, I would buy another one. But, if there is another less bulky product that costs less(we are trying out a Holmes right now too) and works as well then I would probably get something else to save space. Beyond My Expectations We recently purchased this item because I have emphyzema and COPD. I often have a hard time breathing because of dust and pet dander (I have 3 cants and 2 dogs). I immediately noticed a big difference - I could breathe easier, especially at night! While not totally silent, the small amount of noise is not bothersome. This has really helped!!! THIS IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW!! I have been using this unit for over a year. My daughter has cystic fibrosis which causes significant lung issues. It says the filter never has to be replaced, just vacuumed. I have been doing that, but only the pre filter was clogged with dust, and allot of it. The large barrel hepa filter on the top was always white and never dusty. I decided to unscrew some screws on the bottom under the rubber feet to investigate. The instructions are sparse and do not tell you how to get the unit apart for easy cleaning. I found a large ring of packing styrofoam blocking any air from getting to the hepa filter, so the small carbon pre filter was the only one doing the job. The unit comes pre-assembled, so you would not know this unless you took it apart. It is not hard to take apart, BUT THIS HAS TO BE DONE OR IT WONT FILTER PROPERLY! THE STYROFOAM HAS TO BE BROKEN INTO PIECES AND YOU WILL SCRAPE YOUR HAND UP GETTING IT OUT IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL. I have not turned it back on yet, but will update my progress as I find out. Air is cleaner! I bought this for my sons room - it makes a very nice white noise. Is very quiet on low setting. We keep it on medium and my son can easily sleep with it on. The air in his room is lighter, fresher and easier to breathe. It is slightly drafty - but he gets warm at night. It is a little on the large side. I am glad I got this one. as quiet as a fan this honeywell is extremely quiet. on high it is about as quiet as a box fan. seems to do a good job.-can you ever really tell? i am glad i got it. it is worth the $$$. UGLY and EXPENSIVE I have done extensive research on indoor air purifier and the thing is, you do not want the one that is 1) heavy and ugly 2) Nosy 3) expensive to run it 4) expensive to maintain 5) Does not function as well for the money. I came up with THE BEST air purifier there is on the market AIR SOURCE 3000 by Shaklee. One SMALL unit covers up to 3000 Sq feet, no filter to chance, they look like an art, quite and energy saving, kills bacteria and virus, and DOES the job it is supposed to. I will think twice before you buy one of these ugly heavy bulky expensive appliance. Quiet!!! Works great... After reading reviews about how loud some other units were, I decided to try these. I ended up getting two of them, one for the bedroom and one for the living room. The low setting (which we use in the bedroom) is practically silent and you forget that it is running. The medium setting is a little bit louder, but you still forget it is on unless you are paying attention to it. The high setting is much louder, but still acceptable. I did notice a huge difference in my allergies within a day or two and havent reverted back to my crazy allergies since he filters arrived. Good for allergies As other have said, the first day you run it, you will get a wierd smell, be prepared. But after that its great. During the time I am not in the room I run it on high, when I sleep I run it on low. I have 2 dogs, and all of us have allergies, and this has helped. Works great 4.5 stars Weve had this unit plugged in for just under a month and the difference in my girlfriends cat allergies is amazing. We crank it up to medium or high when we come home for the evening, but leave it on low overnight and while were at work. The only draw back is that its quite large. Luckily it works well even without the recommended 360 degree clearance. It doesnt do much for odors, but thats not what we wanted it for. All-in-all, a great buy. Excellent and as quiet as advertised! I have a small room with a dog, a rat in a cage, and three ferrets, so we definitely need an air purifier to "purify" the air in here! I got this version to replace an older, outdated version I had when I needed a new filter and couldnt find out because it had been discontinued. I have to say, it does look nicer and it is quieter, but I found that the older version kept the pet smell out of my room more. Still, I am very happy with this product! When it is set to low, you can hardly hear it at all! Why does this air purifier smell like wet dog? I got this because of the overwhelming positive feedback it inspired. Shipping time was light-speed fast and the unit worked mostly ok but, like other reviewers, I HATE the instruction booklet. OK, the unit comes already put together but you need to put the pre-filter in before you start the unit up. This is actually a very easy thing to do but it becomes very confusing very fast when you try to follow the crappy instructions in the booklet. You dont need to take the top off (contrary to instructions). You actually need to put the black velcro-looking strip along the inside of the bottom of the unit, (This will become clear once you are looking at the thing.) The other problem is that after a couple of weeks, we all started noticing a wet-dog smell in the air. Not horribly offensive, but not aromatic either. We had just had the house professionally cleaned so I knew that all potential stinkies had been taken care of. On a sniff n search, I discovered that the Honeywell was the culprit - stinking up my clean house! I took the thing apart, looking for the problem. Found nothing, it was completely clean. The filter itself did not smell but the air being expelled was awful. I found that if I turned it down to the lowest setting, it went away (or became unnoticeable) but after a couple of hours of medium or high, the phantom smell returns. Any ideas?? Other than that, this is a pretty good unit and not loud at all. On high you notice it more but my kids successfully cover it with yelling, screaming, laughing, arguing etc. As for cleaning the air, I do notice cooking smells leave the downstairs area faster and our asthmatic sleeps easier at night. So I still recommend it but if I were to buy another one, I might try a different model. Smoke Buster Large local forest fires prompted this purchase. It has been a life saver. Running 24/7 with the air conditioner in the house has kept the living room area free of all smoke smell. Even my 84 year old mother did not have to leave. We ran it on medium speed most of the time and could hardly hear it. Really reduces Pet Allergies!!! My boyfriend is allergic to cats, and he swears by this HEPA air filter. From my point of view, too, I really saw that his allergies were significantly reduced after we started running this at my place. My apartment is small... I dont know how much area this covers... But it definitely works in reducing pet allergies. I tried several different spays/gels.... none worked. After using this HEPA air filter - combined with the Fur-minator brush (which is AMAZING) - my boyfriends allergic reactions at my place were significantly reduced. Not too shabby! I like this air purifier, although Ive never bought one before. Shipping was pretty slow, and the delivery guy didnt even knock, he just left it in the rain, but it didnt seem much worse for the wear. Ive had it for about a month now, and I keep it on 24/7, usually on high (I cant hear it over my AC, anyway), but Ive tried all 3 settings. Heres what I think: Pros: Yes, it is QUIET, the high setting is maybe 40-50dB, like the humming of an old fridge. It works great on SMOKE and SMELLS - I smoke "herbal" cigarettes in my 300sqft apartment and they smell a lot! Not only does this suck the smoke out of the air (pretty cool!), but it really helps with the smell that usually lingers for hours after smoking. It works on PET DANDER - yah! my apartment no longer smells like an 80 lb greyhound who rolled in god-knows-what! Cons: DUST? One of the other reviewers said that this helped reduce the amount of dust in their apartment, and I was so excited, because my apartment gets ridiculously dusty every 3 days or so. So I set up the purifier, let it run for a day, then I dusted, and waited. No dice, I had serious dust again in like 3.5 days, too bad :( Although you just vacuum the HEPA filter, YOU STILL HAVE TO BUY A REPLACEMENT PRE-FILTER. Great choice of a permante filter for Mexico City The power consumption is not too bad.. I measured it this morning and its like 90W / 55W / 45 W The lowest mode is really silent and works like white noise which is great. I didnt believe much that the air would feel fresher but it does... in a couple of hours all seems much colder and breathable Love the fact that the HEPA filter is permant Price is more than great for its characteristics Size is huge...really, take that into consideration because its not very discreet in the room Only thing that is ridiculous is that Honeywell insists the filter should operate 24h .... this might be a good idea for your room but not for the environment, especially if you are not in your house for hours during the day. Highly recommendable Reliable and effective!!! Our second Honeywell air purifier in three years.....so far so good. No matter the sound level, even at the lowers setting, your brain accomodates and its not a bother anymore. Prefilter does freshen the air due to the carbon embedded within. Will probably buy another in a year or two of if a great sale comes along! Quieter than others... I have allergies/asthma and own both the Honeywell 18155 (in living room) and the 17000N (in home office). The Honeywell 18155 is MUCH quieter. Its even quieter on "high" than the smaller 1700N is on "low" -- both work very well. Good Air filter I must warn that this guy is bigger that it looks in the picture, so I would check the size specs. However, it is quiet on the low and medium speeds and really, in my opinion, is not to loud on high. I am happy with this purchase. Loud on High It seems to work well, but is too loud when set on high. I think the name of the unit is misleading. It also takes up a lot of room. Great Air Purifier I love this air purifier. I bought this because it had a permanent filter. Im not so sure the filter traps as much particles as a conventional paper filter. This air purifier uses a filter that is similar to a high performance car filter like K & N performance car air filter. It is basically a lifetime filter with an oil coating on it. It allows more air to pass through and relies on the oil coating on the filter to help trap particles. I know for a fact that the high performance car air filters do not trap as many foreign particles as the stock paper air filters, so this leads me to believe that the same would be true in home air purifiers. I didnt realize this until after I purchased this product but Im still happy with it. I didnt want to spend the time or money constantly buying new filters for this air purifier. On the low setting it is very quiet but the units fan draws in very little air and as a result purifies little air. My pre-filter had no dust on it at all after I left the unit on this setting continuously for a few days. The unit is most effective on the high setting, there was a lot of dust on the pre-filter after only half a day. I just use a lint brush every 1-2 days to clean the pre-filter. You should know that the unit is very loud on the high setting and should only be used on this setting when youre not home. Its impossible to sleep with the unit on high. Id advise you to use the medium setting when youre at home. The unit is even quiet enough on this setting to sleep. Quietly controls odors and allergens. Two cats and two smokers produce odors which are pretty awful. When combined, they become a force to be reckoned with. After trying the ionizer route and finding they make the air sort of perky but still full of odors, I went with a HEPA filter that used a carbon pre-filter to help control both allergens and odors. The Silent Comfort works, but the label is a bit misleading as the unit isnt silent nor a recliner. Anyhow, the breakdown: + When the cats do their business, I dont know even if the unit is on low. + Air circulation improved which in turn reduced heating/cooling efforts. + Cigarette smoke visibly gets sucked into the unit, odor is gone within an hour on all settings. + Very easy to setup out of the box though Honeywell could splurge a bit on a maintenance guide. + Extremely quiet, though still audible, on low. + Quite and audible on medium. - I suspect that the machine is going to nag me to clean the filters despite the claim for "normal" use which no doubt expects laboratory style clean-rooms are a good template. - On high the unit is loud, not so loud you cant endure it but you can hear it from about 50 away with the door closed. Conclusion: The negatives arent a big deal, nor the slightly mischaracterized notion of "silent" and "comfort", so its an easy 5/5. Nice Air Purifier I bought the Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort. It truly is quite on low but its big. I managed to fit that in the tiny babys room. It works great. I can hardly hear it in the baby monitor. I do recommend this one if you can spare the room. Larger fans are naturally more quit anyway. Im actually logged in to buy another one for my living room. Quiet, almost too quiet I never appreciated this product as much as I did until I just went to change the pre-filter. After 6 months of almost constant use it had a thick buildup of dust all around it. After purchasing this product I did notice the air in my apartment just seemed fresher, it did not seem as stuffy and cooking odors did not linger as long. When I first purchased this Honeywell I turned it on the low setting and could barely hear it, which worried me because part of the reason I bought it was for white noise at night. On the high setting it is loud enough to provide enough white noise. In the six months of owning it has been very dependable and easy to use. I highly recommend it. Great product - worth every penny This air purifier is the best. Super quiet and works great strongly recommended. Breathe Easier Why I didnt buy this air cleaner sooner is beyond me. Being an allergy sufferer for my entire life, this unit has made a huge difference. The air quality has greatly improved in my home with very acceptable noise level. Quietest True Hepa Pros: Extremely quiet on low. Loud on high (you know its changing air faster when you want it) Not hard on the eyes. 360 intake/outake(?) Its a Honeywell. Cheap Permanent HEPA Filters. (clean with a vacuum) Cons: BIG. Not tall, but wide. I have done extension research on True HEPA, HEPA Type, LFD, and 3M air purifiers - true hepa being the best, 3M being the worst. This purifier is the quietest True Hepa purifier I have tested. It is much quieter than the claimed Kenmore "Americas Quietest True Hepa Filter," and also much quieter than Honeywells QuietCare models. I hear some people complaint about how loud the highest speed is. This is not a sensible remark. You WANT the highest speed to be as loud as possible. The louder it is, the more air it is circulating. The question is how silent can it be, when youre sleeping? This thing is so silent, if you put it on the other side of the room from your bed chances are you wont hear it at all. It has half the dBm of the QuiteCare and the Kenmore. Honeywells designs and filters are incredible. Youll feel a difference after a day. I have terrible seasonal allergies, as well as allergies to my cat. satisfied I purchased 2 of these air purifiers and I am very satisfied with them. If you have it set on low it is very very quiet, medium is a low hum and on high its a constant humming noise but it is still managable. The one in my bedroom is set on low and the one in the tv room is set on medium or high since thats where the pets are the most. this is definately the quietest air purifier i have had. Breath of Fresh Air We purchased this air purifier upon the recommendation of our son. We could not be more pleased with its performance. The air is so clean and pure. You can definitely tell the difference when you walk into the room. If there is a down side to this purifier though, it would be that it is a little noisy when you run it on high. We keep it on either medium or low and receive pleasant results. Piece of Junk I had this on medium for 30 days and it began to howl. Now it howls all the time and it is too loud to run it. For an expensive air cleaner it is cheaply constructed. The inner components are made out of styrofoam the type you see on a disposable beach cooler. Now I have to pay shipping both ways to the manufacturer to have it fixed. Stay away from this air cleaner. Nice purifier Alot quieter than others, and works well. I run it all the time and it does cut down on the amout of dust in the room. About every 3 months the prefilter needs to be changed, they are kinda messy but pretty easy to do. The hepa filter just needs to be vacumed so that really saves on money. The only problem is that its remommended that you put it out in the middle of the room so it can pull air in from all sides, so you cant really put it up against a wall. I do have it kinda close to a wall but it seems to still work fine. Overall Im very happy with this purchase and would recommend it. As Advertized Unit functions as advertized! It is round and bulky though. However, the air flow through the unit is good, and the studio room I am using it in smells clean and fresh! I would highly recommend this air purifier. As advertised... Silent on low, quiet on medium; high sounds like any household fan. You do not hear a mechanical sound, only air moving. Seems to works well but all of my rooms are bigger than the recommended 250 ft2. I am considering buying a second larger unit or an ionic air cleaner for limited time use. Definately less dust, but hard to tell how effective because I also swithed to a better furnace air filters. basically a good unit, easy to move from room and as quiet as you need it. Not Effective Hello All, I purchased this HEPA air filter because I have bad allergies and live in the desert. I am not sure if it has done anything at all, other than increase my energy bill. I would not buy this product. Go to consumer reports and buy the one that they suggest. It works good but loud I bought this air purifier since I have a cat. I do feel the air quality is better, which is very good. But I dont think it is silent enought to be forgetten. It works good but loud I bought this air purifier since I have a cat. HEPA Filter The Honeywell 1855N air purifier is a wonderful product that I would recommend to others. Very good for the price Works great, very quiet at low speeds. Removes odors and seems to keep the air clean. Good value. Fine Product at a good price. The Honeywell 18155 is a well designed product. The case is well fitted, the unit has a carrying handle on top, a good feature. The three speed fan unit is very quiet compared to other units this size. The noise level for each of the speeds (slow, medium and high) is quite acceptable. I use slow or medium at night and high during daytime. There are two filters, the Hepa one that never needs replacement but should be vacuumed when the units indicator light comes on, or sooner. There is a carbon pre-filter that should be replaced every three months. An indicator light is provided for that filter also. The unit is rated for cleaning the air in a room as large as 255 square feet. The unit comes with a five year limited warranty. Seems to work great Been plugging away for two weeks now, has really made a difference in cutting down the dust. Loses one star since the status light bleeds down into the change-filter light enough to make it unclear if the filter light is on or not. Loses one star since the status light bleeds down into the change-filter light enough to make it unclear if the filter light is on or not. Better than expected We bought this for our "smoking" room and it does work on smoke if used on the High setting which is louder than I thought it would be. I like the permanent filter and the charcoal filters are cheap to replace. You do need clearance around it so check the dimensions. Great product!!! After recieving this product, ease of setup is extremely good. We have 2 cats, a dog, and 2 birds in our apartment. I have allergies. The air quality has improved in a MAJOR way. I havent had nearlly the congestion and irritation from airborne allergens since plugging this thing in. Very happy with the purchase!!! My only complaint is the fact that the coverage area is not wide enough. After having said that, for the price... Im still happy and it has made a dramatic improvment. Shipping was fast. HEPA filter We bought this product last month and have been using it mainly in the master bedroom which also has a master bath attached. Although we have not used it 24/7 as suggested in the users manual, the air in our room smells a lot cleaner and we have been getting fewer sinus headaches and are breathing easier in the mornings. The mechanism is relatively quiet compared to an older model that we had. For smaller rooms in the house, I may consider getting a smaller sized model as this one does take up space. Honeywell Silent Comfort Air Purifier The Honeywell Air Purifier is a great tool and very quiet. I like that it is portable, lightweight and effective. This was a good value. Delivery was on time and the product intact. The overall experience has been excellent. Good Air Cleaner Nice and Quiet. The only negatives are the instructions which do not seem to match the machine. the diagrams (on Amazon too) show a large prefilter wrapped around the main filter. In fact that is not how it is set up. The small prefilter goes on the bottom of the machine. The main filter is in the top and they are accessed via different "hatches". The directions also show cleaning the outside of the HEPA filter. the reality is that the way the machine works you would need to clean the INSIDE surface of the HEPA. Otherwise works fine. I got a Honeywell 18155N SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier. I picked this one, because it is recommended for my sized bedroom. Its rather large, and I dont keep it the recommended 3 feet away from the walls, or else it would be in the middle of my walking space. Even on maximum setting, it is pretty quiet, and actually makes a nice "white noise" which I find almost pleasant as Im falling asleep. Ive found that Im less congested. I would recommend this product. happy customer so my roommate thinks its a little loud when its on high, but I dont find it that noisy. Its still not as noisy as our dishwasher. It cleans the air remarkably well. I was having serious problems breathing before, and wouldnt be able to sleep since I would be coughing all night. With this, now even my roommate thinks the air smells cleaner. excellent for the money! just moved into a new apt with roommate who has a cat....this item has been a lifesaver! though my allergies are usually mild, im not used to cat dander, so i was sneezing and sniffling a good bit before this came in the mail. once it did, i plugged it in and within an hour i could tell the air was cleaner than it was before. honeywell usually makes really reliable products, and i know this one will be no different. it is VERY quiet on the lowest setting, you can barely hear it; the higher settings provide some nice white noise, if you are looking for something to do that. only thing is, the prefilter needs changed about every 3 months...im going to test it out to see if that is really true or if it can go longer...but not having to buy a new HEPA is great! good luck! My Experience I returned this item. There is no barrier between the part of the machine which pulls in air and the part which pushes it out again. I believe it picks up dust, and then just blows it out again without ever going through the filter. If you put a ribbon above it there is no air movement at all. So I dont believe that it is changing the air in the room. Also, it blew carbon, from the filter into the air, which got in my eye. I do not recommend this product. Faulty Product Had the product for less than 30 days and the motor burned out. I had to pay ~$25 to ship it back to the manufacturer and they also tried to charge a warranty fee. I am less then happy with my purchase so far. Good for the money. This unit is quiet when running on the low setting; high is rather loud. Even though its not a high-end model it does the job its supposed to. When I removed the pre-filter there was more hair on it than on my cat and lots of dust. I recently had a very smokey kitchen from a pan fire and it helped with clearing the room. I like this unit a lot. Its low-tech and very portable. I just wonder if the plastic unit gives off gas but its too late to worry about that now because I already own it. Good for the money. The only good thing I will say is that is was quiet on the low setting. You cant clean the permanant filter unless you blow it out. The carbon prefilter is small and must be cleaned constantly and does not do much for oder removal. On the site, it showed a charcoal prefilter that wraps around the Heppa cartridge. That is not the case. The prefilter is a strip that goes inside the bottom of the unit where the air comes in. The air then flows from the inside out in the heppa cartridge. Very poor design. Also the manuel that comes with the unit says nothing about cleaning the main filter. It did give some better breathing conditions, but not enough. I have just returned it. I have come to the conclusion this is just hyped up idea to sell the unit. Contacted the manufacturer and customer service is poor with any answers. A bad sign. Like many of these cheaper units, you end up paying more to replace cartridges in the long term. That would be the case with this one. Also, no indicator light came on for the dirty prefilter. I am looking into an Austin. They are more money, but with an excellent filter that is pro-rated for 5 years in normal conditions, with much better construction and a great reputation. I do not recommend you waste your money on this unit! Very satisfied This air purifier works very good. Its been one month I have been using. It is lighter than I had thought so I was able to move it to other rooms easily, you can grap on the top. And very quiet which I am very pleased by. I keep it turned on for several hours in the afternoon, and at night. Major noticeble changes: 1. I dont see dust layers on the top of my book shelves or side tables for a couple of weeks. 2. My 18 month old daughter breathe much comfortably, and dont wake up at night by breath problem. But, I feel that this Honeywell 18155N is not so good at eliminating odors. It works! This is a great air purifier, it works great, it is quiet and it doesnt emit a cool breeze like it says. It really helps me a lot and I am a long time sinus and allergy sufferer. you can really feel the difference in the air when you go outside or to another location. I dont think it is large and bulky its made to work in up to 225 square feet! I use it in a tiny studio apartment and I still have space. Its easy to set up and best of all..it works! Definetly reccomend this Air Purifer. Honeywell Air Purifier This purifier is quiet. It takes quite a while to remove odors from a room and needs to run 24/7. I bought this purifier because of the permanent Hepa Filter. Only used for 2 weeks so far and there isnt much else to report. AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! clean air I bought two and they work just as advertised. I am thinking of at least one more. less than expected Im not sure why this product received so many 5 star reviews. I was sold on this product after reading customer reviews but my experience has been less than expected. I needed an air purifier to reduce tobacco odor in my bedroom but its not doing its job. I only smoke a couple of cigarettes a day. My friend has one that almost eliminates tabacco odor but its an ionized air purifier which many reviewers on this web site discouraged me from buying. This product seems to reduce air particles but again you wont be satisfied if you expect to get rid of more than 50-60% of odor/dirt. There was a debate amongst many reviewers about its noise level. My vote is that it should not be called "Silent Comfort". Its definitely misleading. Its not too bad if you can have a little fresher air for $130 but you can probably get much more had you invested a little more. less than expected Im not sure why this product received so many 5 star reviews. Its our first air purifier purchase so we dont have a lot to compare it to. We did read Consumer Reports and wanted to avoid an ionizer, which this product does not have. The machine is fairly quite or at least basic white nose. I have noticed that I sleep better with it in the bedroom and my sinuses are clear when I wake up so it has improved my allergies a bit. Id say the only downside to this product is its size. Its large and bulky, but the specs are listed on the product and I just didnt pay attention to it when I bought it. Overall, were happy with it though. Perfect for people with allergies I bought this air purifier because my infant was showing signs of allergies - sneezing, rubbing her eyes, etc. Within an hour of turning on this filter, everyone in the household stopped having sneezing fits and our baby doesnt have red, itchy eyes anymore. Im amazed by how well it works. The unit is really quiet. The only thing I dont like about it is the size. Its huge! At a foot and a half wide it takes up a lot of space. You cant easily hide this thing next to the sofa. Im still trying to figure out where to put it so that it isnt in the way but can still filter the air. Very satified with this product overall. Honeywell 18155N SilentComfort airfilter, thumbs-up. very quiet for sure. its helping a lot with my allergies. i run it 24/7 on low and that does the trick. the only disadvantage is the suggested placement, 3 from any wall. however ive got it maybe 1-2 feet from any wall and its able to suck air from all directions. HEPA Air Purifier The air purifier arrived in a timely fashion. So far so good. Super Effective Great product. You can really feel (and breathe) the difference in the air when you turn this on in a closed room, although I use it with the door open, too. For allergies and asthma, with its HEPA filter system (doctors Ive spoken to recommend HEPA as the best filtration system for these problems), it has made a big difference for me. I had an older model that made a louder, harsher noise. Even on high, the sound from this model is still balanced enough so that it does, as others have commented, create a pleasant white noise effect. Note that it is fairly large and heavy, so moving it around from room to room is not impossible but a bit of a hassle. I havent yet had to clean/replace the filters, since its still new. But I like that there is a filter indicator on the unit so I dont have to remember when to do it. Super Effective Great product. "HONEYWELL: 18155 SilentComfort Air Purifier" First off, Id like to say that this is the only air purifier Ive ever owned so I cannot compare it fairly to others so I wont even try. But Ive read dozens of reviews about the Honeywell QuietCare 17000 and noticed the main complaint is that its not really queit at all. Well...I hope this helps. As far as the noise level goes this SilentComfort 18155 is very quiet on MED and LOW. On HIGH, right next to it, its about as loud as our dishwasher about 30 feet away. So its not bad at all. I can still hear the television and have normal conversations with the family without yelling. Ive done some of my own studies to see how well the dust is being pulled into the machine and can see there is dust building up in the pre-filter over time. It seems to work very well. Ive also noticed a difference on how fresh the air smells. My sneezing is almost down to zero, when its running, and that tells me its really working. It does NOT have an IONIZER which IS A GOOD THING in my opinion. Ive learned that these ionizers omit ozone. Which inside the home this ozone builds up and can be very harmful to the lungs. I did NOT like the sound of that so I turned away from the "ionizer" models. It is very sturdy, a little bulky, but not too heavy to put in other rooms from time to time when I feel the need to relocate it. It blows cold air, not like a fan and not too direct, at a 360 degree radius(it also pulls from every direction). The cold air will be nice in the summer but its not so nice right now in the winter. I like to put it next to the bed and it can get a little chilly when my covers come off. It has a very comforting and relaxing white noise hum to it. The motor runs very soft and consistant. No rattling or buzzing of any kind. It seems very well built. MY ONLY CONCERN is that the return/exhaust does NOT blow straight up. It blows outword on the top/sides and it pulls from the bottom. This may be a brilliant design or a serious flaw? I question...is it just filtering the same air over and over again or is it like a vortex that pulls the dust into it with the pushing air(kind of like a tornado)? In my studies I found that was a tough call for me to make. But it really does help with my allergies so I must conclude that its working properly. I ordered it directly from Amazon and it arrived in 4 days(that includes the weekend) and that was with the FREE SUPERSAVER SHIPPING. Amazon is always fantastic about that, so no complaints there. OVERALL... I am very pleased, though it may be a little early to give a longevity review right now, the HoneyWell SilentComfort 18155 really seems to work great and I have no complaints. If anything faulty or negative develops I will amend it into this review accordingly. 2 THUMBS UP...and I breathe much easier now. FANTASTIC and VERY QUIET...
