How to work around mean old P&G and enjoy your great filter     On: 2010-07-22

PUR Water Filter Review \\ Hack

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called planned obsolescence whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didnt used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called timed death whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking no for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. Youve cheated no one. P&Gs cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! Youre done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. Youll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldnt be without them. Its P&Gs customer abuse thats not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.
Fantastic for the price     On: 2010-07-17

Weve owned it for about a month now and it works fantastic. Water pressure is good, much better than other filters weve used. Doesnt take very long at all to fill up a glass. Installation was stupidly simple and I was up and running in no time. Water quality is great coming out of the unit, very good taste and no odor. I can REALLY tell the difference when we make coffee or tea, much more tasty.

Really my only complaint is that it is kind of cheap feeling, which isnt a huge deal since it wasnt expensive.
They've re-engineered it...     On: 2010-06-09

Weve owned this unit before, and it sprung a leak after a year of heavy use. So, we bought another one last week...

Note: the picture shown is not what came out of the box. The twisty knob for switching between filtered and unfiltered is now more of a smooth action lever than a knob. Overall, the filter has a larger footprint because its now supported differently, for the better I think, since it feels more securely attached to the faucet than the old model. Installation is also different, it now clicks onto the faucet rather than screwing in. Also, the filtered water flow seems a little faster on the previous model. We dont really use the flavor feature, so I cant comment on that. Im hoping that the manufacturer listened to past complaints and tried to address them with this new design. Im giving it 4 stars since the water coming out of it tastes great, no 5th star because I dont know how long it will last this time around...
PUR flavor faucet mount     On: 2010-06-01

Well, its ok but not a lot more than that.
The good news is that you dont need any tools to hook it up.
But the bad news is that it took several tries to get it to remain seated.
It feels a little flimsy and I worry that if anyone gets even a little heavy handed with it it will surly break. Not metal on it at all anymore...all feels like a metal balsa wood...lol
On the plus side the flavor option is nice and simple.
Overall it just doesnt seem/look/feel very sturdy for what it costs.
But Im not sorry I bought it...it works....while Im not amazed with it I am satisfied.
slow slow filter     On: 2010-05-29

I timed how long it takes to fill a coffee mug with water:

Filter off - Tap 1/2 on - 4 seconds
Filter on - Tap full on - 50 seconds.

This is not very usable or practical.
Do not waste your money!     On: 2010-05-14

Tired of buying bottled water, I decided to purchase this water filter. At first, it worked great. Good tasting water, convenient and easy to use, looked decent on the faucet. All of this changed afer about 2 months when it began to leak. I thought maybe we had over-tightened when we first attached it to the faucet and stripped some threads so I bought a second one and tried again. I will say they are consistent because I got the same results with the second one. Not only did it drip from the back of the unit, it began spraying out of the front. It was no fun getting a shower everytime you wanted a drink of water.

Save your money and buy a pitcher or dispenser. I finally bought the PUR DS-1800Z 2-Stage Water Dispenser and have been very satisfied with it. Plus, it never spits in my face.

Not a long term solution     On: 2010-05-03

From the start it leaked and after constantly adjusting the angle and the tightness I minimized the leak but did not get rid of it. It is a very cheap looking system and turned me off ever buying a faucet mount system again. It takes a bit of force to use the Flavor Option button that within a few months loosened the seal again and caused it to leak more.

If you are fortunate enough not to have a leak, I can see how this can be a good system. The water did taste cleaner and the flavored water also tasted good. The filters last for quite awhile, and switching filters is quite simple.

If you are looking for a long term solution, I wouldnt recommend this. It seems cheaper and I would be impressed if it would last more than two years.

We are no longer using our system because the entire point of the purchase was to encourage us not to buy bottled water. That is difficult to accomplish when it leaks water every time you use it.
The best faucet water filter     On: 2010-03-10

Its super easy to mount to the faucet, and works very well, no spills or leackeage. Adding the flavors is fun for kids.
Looks shoddy but it does the job     On: 2010-02-04

I purchased this filter at my local grocery store. It looks so much more impressive on the box and in photos then it does in real life. Its big, bulky and the fake chrome looks very fake (you can tell its plastic from a distance).

I might have gone with a more familiar brand like BRITA, however, I was intrigued by the Flavor Options feature of this model. Im perfectly satisfied with non-flavored water but I thought it might be fun for the kids. Unfortunately, the flavored water option is not that great. In fact - it just tastes gross. We dont use artificial sweeteners in our house so it could simply be that we dont have a taste for it. One pump/squirt of the flavoring leaves the water tasting like perfumed water and several makes it sickly fake sweet. There doesnt seem to be a happy medium.

Aside from being disappointed with the Flavor Option in general, the product itself does not appear to be built to last. The housing is plastic and it seems terribly flimsy. Also, some of the parts for installing are extremely sharp and will cut you. My boyfriend sliced his thumb and forefinger up very badly while screwing in the connecting piece between our faucet and the filter (the cuts occurred while it was still fairly loose - not from over tightening it). The threads on this piece are EXTREMELY SHARP. I know because after seeing his cuts I ran my thumb along it not believing that it could have been that sharp and wound up with a good slice in mine as well (like a paper cut). I handed him some paper towels to protect his hands while he tightened it up the rest of the way.

Overall, I still give this filter three stars though because it ultimately does what I want it to - Filters Water. Even though I dont care for the Flavor Option, it is of course Optional so I will continue to use this filter until the time comes for us to find a new one. One nice thing about this filter is the light indicator that tells you if the filter is working, if the filter is starting to get old and if the filter should be replaced. Im not certain though how valid the indicator is (ie - is it really measuring the quality of the filter or just the number of times water has passed through the filter). Although I will continue to use this for the time being, once it starts to break down I am going to try a different brand.
Kids Love it!     On: 2009-11-19

I got it for my home cause the water here tastes really bad and well Im very happy to now have better tasting water to drink and even with some flavor to it too! My kids also love it cause they can add some flavor to their water. I been seeing them drinking or water too cause of this!
water lover     On: 2009-10-24

I purchased this because I got sick of purchasing bottled water. I am very picky about how my water tastes (We have terrible water here) and because that is pretty much all I drink I was a bit nervous about it. I found that the pur filter removes any unwanted flavors from the water, but I have to run it into a pitcher and refrigerate the water to get it as cold as I like. Unfortunately, I dont have a filter for our ice maker, so if I try to use them they just leak the regular water taste into the glass. But, this is not a problem for me and is worth it because of the green aspect. The only thing about this filter that Ive found is not for me is the water flavor. The flavoring that you can purchase is just too sweet for me so Im not a fan, but my husband cuts the sweetness down with a slice of lemon and that seems to work for him. Other than not having needed the flavoring aspect of this filter I do love it and am extremely glad we now have it!
Well, mine broke finally     On: 2009-09-19

I was somewhat lucky as that my purifier was functional for about 2 years. I think I got mine at K-mart for $30

heres what I liked and disliked:

+The water itself is noticably fresh and good tasting (using the 3 stage filters).

-The flavor thing is dumb, I didnt like the taste of them and the dispenser is of a chintzy design (it looked impressive on display)

-it takes a while, like 10 seconds to fill a glass, rather than 3 seconds or so.

-The unit is pretty bulky and makes it hard to see the dishes

-If you have a faucet nozle that lets you adjust where the water comes out of slightly (like I did) you will have to remove this and basically store it until your purifier breaks and you can put it back on.

-These things aparently tend to break...

Mine suddenly broke a few days ago. First the LED indicator stopped coming on, so I decided to buy two new filters ($25...). I popped a new one in and ran the sink for a while, and walked away. The light came on, but it didnt go off like it was supposed to. I fiddled with it for a while to no avail. It sounded like something was loose in the head peice when I removed it to give it a shake. That went on until the battery failed presumably (~15 hours).

Now, most importantly, it seems that my PUR water filter is no longer filtering the water. The water tastes noticably worse, and it comes out of the unit suspiciously fast. Im really disapointed with losing the $25 for the filters.
Good concept, but not really worth it     On: 2009-09-15

Bought it. Used it. Loved it....at first. Not really worth it. The cover keeps popping off at the slightest touch and the flavors are just "alright". We ended up just slicing lemons and limes and adding them to our glasses for a much more pleasant drink.
I just got the water filter     On: 2009-08-23

Very nice ! I did not have any problem with leaking. I am very please. easy to install and I like the flavors with 0 calories
Great product,BUT!     On: 2009-08-17

This is a great filter for the price and the flavoring is a major plus. Now lets get to the BUT! part which is that this is my second one of these (the first one was perfect until a plumbing job ruined it with plumbers putty)and it leaks on the faucet so instead of sending it back Ill deal with it till I buy another which will be another one of these.
A great filter!     On: 2009-06-12

I have had this filter device for three years and cant say enough about the quality of the water - its absolutely delicious. We had Arrowhead delivered for years and this filter beats their quality. A word of caution - buy only this unit with the flavor option. I dont use the flavor device but this device makes it extremely easy to unscrew the filter face and replace the filter. Buying this device without the flavor option just makes for difficulty in changing filters. Once you try this greater filter you wont be satisfied with any other kind of water - I promise you!
So far So Great!     On: 2009-06-03

I would give this product 5 stars except Ive only had it for a short time. It works better than expected considering all the negative reviews that I read after I purchased it. Glad I didnt read them before. Was easier to install than the non-flavored filters Ive owned over the last 6 years!
I guess much is left to the luck of the draw or maybe the economy as I have noticed that except for my first pur faucet mount filter which lasted 2 years without leaks or problems the next ones I bought had progressively shorter lifespans. This is why I could not give a perfect score quite yet. However, I think its great and the water tastes great with or without the flavor. Its a wonderful way to get the kids drinking more water!

Pur water filter mount     On: 2009-06-03

This is an extremely neat product but be careful because it can get very expensive. The flavor cartridges didnt even last a day at my house and at $5.00 a peice that can get really expensive. ($5.00 daily x 7 days a week= $35 weekly $140 a month)Yikes! Not to mention that several that I purchased did not work properly. I find it is much more cost effective to buy propel or the powdered flavors. Otherwise, the filter being on your faucet is great. But again, be careful because the filters are costly too.
believe the reviews, this is bad...     On: 2009-05-16

falls off easily, does not stay on, progressively gets worse
too big to wash dishes around

water tastes excellent
A Fairly Good Product     On: 2009-04-24

Ive been using this product for a few months now. Replaced the filter about three times. Each filter seems to run differently. The water comes out of some fast and others slow. Dont know why but the water tastes great. Dont know Id get this model with the flavor cartridges again. They dont last as long as one would think they should.
Pur Water ... Tastes Great....     On: 2009-03-16

I picked this up at my local Kmart. We had a filter system under the kitchen sink but it was leaking and we needed something else. My sister has one of these Pur Water Filtration Systems at her home and I thought why not get one also. I would have ordered it from Amazon, but I needed something right away since the water was leaking under the kitchen sink. First, I had to disconnect the old filter system and have the water go directly to the faucet. That was the only hard part because I was afraid that I was going to screw things up underneath the sink. Then, up above at the sink, it was easy to install this Pur Water Filtration System. This Pur system has the flavor options which was nice. It looks like my main option for getting replacement filters and the flavor packs would be to order them via Amazon. Its true that you have to run the water for five minutes when you put in the new filter because the water is murky at first when you run the water through a new filter for the first time. The flavor pack puts drops in your water to give it flavor (raspberry) - suppose to be 75 servings per flavor cartridge. Thanks for reading.
Dont they test these things before they mass produce them?     On: 2009-01-08

Even though I read the reviews here, just the thought of not having to buy water or juice anymore made me want to have this so bad. Sadly though these people didnt just receive a bad unit, seems like 90% or more have these leaking problem. I didnt even get to enjoy one cup of water, didnt even get to try the juice. =[ I installed this thing & its like I installed a waterfall, this thing leaked from every possible place, you know what I should have taken a picture. It was serioiusly that ridiculous, like the sprinkler cap they put on fire hydrants. I uninstalled & installed about 3 times, checking the washers, removing them & putting them back, still same thing everytime. I installed my faucets, I consider myself somewhat of a handyman so its not like this was brain surgery to me.
Mostly pleased     On: 2009-01-02

I read the mixed reviews of this product before getting it, so I wasnt sure what to expect. Thought Id throw in my two cents.

First the bad: I had really hoped that the reports of leaking were just flukes, but unfortunately I also experienced leaking on the 2nd day I used the filter. I had to use one of the adapters to get the filter to fit on my sink, and it is around the adapter that the leaking is occurring... so leaking may not have been an issue had I not required the adapter. I tried reinstalling the thing multiple times, but the leaking persisted. So my solution was to go to the hardware store and get some stretchy plumbing tape. I wrapped it around at the point of the leak, and now I have no more leaking! On the down side, I have a piece of tape wrapped around my faucet. Fortunately, the tape is black and matches the trim of the filter, so its not too terrible aesthetically.

Now the good: The reason I am willing to live with having tape on my faucet is because other than the leaking, I absolutely love this filter! I am a bit of a water snob (hate the taste of tap water), so Ive been buying bottled water for years. I didnt like being so environmentally unfriendly, though, so I decided to give this a try. I love this water! It really tastes like bottled water! I did a little taste test comparing my tap water filtered vs. unfiltered, and the difference is striking.

Personally, I LOVE having the flavors. I am drinking SO much more water than I used to as a result of the flavor option. Like others, I have to use several squirts to get the flavor I want. I find that with several squirts, it tastes almost exactly like Fruit2O, so if you like that, you will like the taste of this. If you dont like Fruit2O or other diet drinks flavored with Splenda, you wont like this.

So overall, I am very pleased with this filter, now that I have found a workaround for the leaking issue.
So far Very Happy     On: 2008-11-28

PUR FM-5050C 3 Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount with Flavored Cartridge

I bought this unit back in June and I love how it taste, I have the strawberry, peach, and raspberry, which I not only use for flavored water but I also use them to add flavor to my white and green hot tea.

It looks great and was easy to install and the filters are a snap too although either I use more water then I think or I dont get 100 gallons per filter as I am on my 3rd one.

I only gave it 4 stars because of the reports about leaking. Mine so far has not leaked at all and I would recommend to any one wanting to drink healthier.
good quality     On: 2008-11-24

I went with this one instead of the plain (non-flavored) one since it was cheaper. I was pleasantly surprised that the flavoring wasnt half bad. The quality of the product was fairly good and should last for a couple of years which is all you can really hope for.
Functional.. Packaging disgusting     On: 2008-10-30

I am pleased with the actual product. The flavor taste delicious and is easy to operate. However, the packaging for this product was disgusting. The box was completely mangled and opened, and there was dirt and sand throughout the entire package. I was scared to use the filter, as there was sand actually in it. After buying a new filter I used the produce and loved it.
Pur Water Filter FM-5050C     On: 2008-10-13

Save your money!! This is my second Pur water filter from Proctor and Gamble. My first started leaking after 5-6 months. After complaining PG sent a coupon for a new one. My new one just started leaking. The product looks nice and functions well, but it is not well made. Once we are done with the expensive filters this unit is going in the trash. So as I said before, get something else.
Seemed okay when I installed it     On: 2008-10-12

It worked okay until it needed a new filter. My wife was unable to install the new filter successfully and the device leaked and the warning lights failed to illuminate to verify that the water was being properly filtered. Ill have to try and fix this when I get home. Hopefully there is not something wrong with the device. It was a bit expensive to toss it out with the filter after a few hundred gallons......
I wouldn't buy     On: 2008-10-05

This is such a shame. I had a vertical 3 stage PUR filter and after about six months it sprung leaks. So, I decided to get their more expensive model. After a couple of weeks, the flavor button stopped working. I replaced the flavor cartridge and that didnt fix the problem. Plus, any tiny bump and the cover to the flavor packet would come right off.

This thing is too big for standard sinks. Washing pots and pans was not easy and you have to work around it.

Ive owned this model now for about six months and its leaking all over as well. In fact, the back pressure actually caused a pin hole in the faucet arm to develope and now I have to replace my faucet. Not totally the units fault because our water in Austin is very hard.

The biggest tragedy in this is that the water that actually comes out of this thing is outstanding. So clean that the water even tasted sweet. I just dont want the same problem in a couple of months all over aain. Guess Ill be scouring the web fo a viable replacement. Very disappointed.
Don't waste your money like I did!     On: 2008-09-27

I should have believed all of the negative reviews. From the start it restricted the waterflow and progressively got worse until it stopped working altogether - 2 months after I bought it. JUNK!

I didnt mind the flavoring though, but I like diet drinks.
I can stop buying bottled water, vitamin water, and crystal light!     On: 2008-09-02

I primarily purchased this in order to quit the bottled water habit for good. It was easy to install and the water tastes fantastic. No more hauling giant cases of spring water from the store and filling up my recycle bin with dozens of bottles a week!

I read a lot of negative reviews on the taste of the flavor cartridges, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I love the taste of the flavored water as well. I drink a lot of crystal light and vitamin water, and the PUR flavor cartridges are right on par with those types of drinks. If they could make the cartridges more like vitamin water by adding actual vitamin enhancements, this would be the perfect product for me. My filter came with the peach cartridge, and I will definitely be trying the other flavors as well. It takes about 5 full squirts to get a nice tasting beverage, but you can experiment and find out what works best for you.

This was a fantastic investment!!
Perfect For Us.     On: 2008-09-01

Oh, this is great compared to what came from the tap before. Easy, Simple, so we are happy. Try it I think you will also like it.
Not great     On: 2008-08-11

Worked great the first 4 months, then it broke, started leaking water everywhere. Other than that it worked just fine, but I expected it to last a little longer for the money I spent on it.
A little bulky but worth the inconvenience     On: 2008-05-27

I got this for Mothers day as I drink a lot of bottled flavored water. It does not taste as sweet, but thats ok, Ive aquired a taste for it now and the bottled stuff is too sweet. The system is a little bulky and makes it hard to rinse large items in my sink. It can be removed but too much bother to do so. I am going to replace my faucet w/ a higher one any way. I am the only one who uses the flavor option, so the cartridges last a while for me. I have read the reviews indicating the unit does not hold up well. Too soon for me to tell but so far I love it.
Works Well, but Leaks Quite a Bit     On: 2008-05-09

This product works well, but it leaks quite a bit. It takes about 3 squirts of flavor for 12-16oz glass of water. The filters last 2-3 months, so Id suggest buying the 6-pack Pur 3 Stage Faucet Mount Filter #RF-9999, 6-Pack.

The installation is fairly simple, but after having it a few months, it started to leak from where it attaches to the faucet and also from the bottom (where the split is). Perhaps some super glue and maybe a new gromit?
Not so good     On: 2008-05-03

I was really looking forward to getting this product. I go through a lot of flavored bottled water - Fruit2O, Nestle, Adirondack, a few other brands. Anyway, this seemed like a great way to save some money, and more importantly not continue to go through the plastic bottles like crazy.

So I have had it about 3 weeks now, and am very disappointed in the flavor feature. It supposedly only takes 1 squirt to flavor 8 oz. of water. I have found 1 squirt to give absolutely no flavor. 2 squirts provides a very faint flavor. 3 gets you something recognizable. 6 or 7 gets you closer to bottled water quality. So at this pace, you go through the flavorings so quickly, you end up spending MORE than you would to buy the bottles. I think this is why some other reviewers thought there was no sweetener in the flavorings - if you only use a squirt or 2 the flavor is so weak, you may not think it is sweetened.

On the positive side the filter seems to work pretty well, regular tap water is pretty good run through it. However, I already owned a Brita pitcher that worked fine for this purpose. It was the flavor option that drove this purchase, and it is the flavor option that has left me disappointed.

Works as advertised     On: 2008-04-30

The water tastes great, the included flavor pack actually tastes pretty good too. It will add considerable bulk to your faucet though.
Don't buy     On: 2008-04-25

1. Adds flavor to filtered water. Feels like mixed with vinegar
2. Filter was installed in the bathroom and used very moderately - about 4 glasses a day. After about a WEEK electronic filter indicator staterd flashing red, and day later water stopped flowing. New filter costs 20 bucks. Means, using filter would cost $20 a week. NO, THANK YOU!
Poorly made piece of junk     On: 2008-04-21

Recently the quality of the PUR Faucet Mount systems have gone into the toilet. I contacted PUR to let them know I was having problems with keeping their PUR filter from leaking. They sent me a coupon for a new one and I purchased this "state of the art" model thinking that if the previous models had kinks then surely they would have worked them out by now. Ummmm... no way. The silver colored plastic Faucet Mount Housing (the large silver part that holds the filter) came off within about a week of us installing it because the glue gave out. The front silver cover that houses the flavor cartridge kept falling off if it was slightly tapped. This thing leaked within a few months of getting it. Try as we may, tightening it did nothing. Then we tried to take it off to check the rubber seal. The mounting nut that attaches it to the faucet then locked up so we couldnt put it back on. Save your money. Replacing the unit every few months doesnt give you any real savings. Im dissappointed again. I wish I could give it -3 stars because I would.
Great Product, Very Useful     On: 2008-04-05

I have been a user of PUR waters filters for about 8 years now. I have always loved the product and always will support it. BUY ONE YOU WILL NOT REGRET.
Okay for plain water, at least...     On: 2008-04-04

The filtered water tastes good, but the flavoring is just awful! The included flavoring tastes like medicine. There are more flavors now (grape, lemon) than when I bought the filter. Maybe they taste better, but they are a bit expensive so Im not sure I want to risk it again.
This will get me drinking water!     On: 2008-04-01

I was very skeptical about this product and I wasnt willing to spend the money for something I wasnt going to like...but I really wanted to drink more water and not have to schlep home a flat of 48 water bottles every week. I read a review where a lady gave out a great piece of advice...she suggested buying the $9 flavor cartridge and adding it to some bottled water. You get to see if you like the flavor and you are only out $9 instead of the price and hassle of a unit and returning it.

I had several flavors to choose from: strawberry, raspberry, peach, and lemon. I chose strawberry. I was so excited to try this I left the rest of my groceries in the car and brought in only the bag that contained the flavor cartridge. I grabbed a nice cold bottle of water from the fridge and opened the Pur packaging to reveal 2 little flavor cartridges. I was hoping to just squeeze the cartridge and have a few drops expel, but it wasnt that easy. Perhaps someone else could get it to work, but I decided to just cut off the tip and see if that worked. I was able to get about 5 drops fairly easily and I sampled the water. I could tell I had added strawberry to the water, but it was at a level that seemed worth the trouble at that point. I squeezed again and this time about 10 drops came out. Another sampling had me hooked! This stuff rocks!

Let me say that I do enjoy Diet Coke, but I do not like Crystal Light or any of the other artificially flavored diet drinks on the market that have that crazy aftertaste. I love Propel Fitness Water and Fruit 2O and this tasted very similar to me.

As far as this being cost effective, I guess it isnt as cost affective for someone like me who likes to use more than the nominal few drops, but I will drink this all day long and to me that makes it worthwhile.
No More Bottled Water To Lug Home!!     On: 2008-03-27

We have been using our PUR water filter with the flavor options for a little more than 2 months now, & our light just started blinking yellow, so well need to be changing the filter soon. We have EXTREMELY hard water here, & our city water often has a metallic or chlorine taste straight out of the tap. Prior to buying our PUR filter unit, we had a water dispenser which held the 6 gallon bottles of water. Theres a lot of self serve places here in town where you can buy the reverse osmosis filtered water, but its a pain since my husband always had to be the one to go fill the bottles since I cant lift that heavy jug. Its great now that we dont have to always be sure to have the water jugs filled, we can drink it straight from the tap without any more strange smells or tastes in our water!! I LOVE it!! I also love the flavor option, you can choose whether you want plain water or a shot of flavoring. Just dont overdo it! It tastes awful if you put too much in, just about one squirt for every 8 ounces of water. You can put a bit more or a bit less depending on your preference, just go easy! I dont know why several reviewers have said that the flavoring has no sweetener in it, it is sweetened with Sucralose which I think is Splenda. If you are not used to diet drinks or dont like diet drinks, then you probably wont like the flavor options since it is made with a diet sweetener, but I think it only has a very mild, hardly noticeable diet taste. My favorite flavor is the raspberry, & they just came out with lemon & grape flavors. They also have strawberry & peach. I really like the lemon too, but havent found the grape yet. We were unsure if anything less than reverse osmosis could help our hard as a rock water, and also get rid of the odors & strange tastes, but this does a fantastic job!! We have made some ice with the filtered water, & although its a bit cloudy, its a huge improvement over the ice made with straight tap water. The only thing we dont really like is that when we use the filtered water to make iced tea, the tea tastes fine, but it looks cloudy. When I contacted the company to ask about this, they said that is a normal after effect from filtering the water. As I said, it doesnt affect the taste, but it just doesnt look as good as the tea we made with the bottled water, but that is our only complaint. So we may start buying water to make our iced tea, but that wont be too bad. We are still extremely happy that we finally gave the PUR filter a try. When we decided to try the PUR filtering system, we figured we had nothing to lose since the P&G company offers its either a 30 or 60 day (I cant remember for sure)trial period during which you can return the unit if youre unhappy with it. So give it a try!! You have nothing to lose except for nasty tasting water!!
Pur 3     On: 2008-03-15

It is easy to install. Everyone in the house is drinking more water. Very convienent. The flavor cartridges are rather small and expensive, 2/$10+ in stores, but flavored water cost more. If it gets everyone to drink more water then soda, Ill pay it. It is plastic, a real chrome or metal would be much nicer, a little bulky for on a sink faucet when you have dishes to wash. I worry about banging it and breaking it w/washing pots/pans. It does not sweeten your water, just flavors it. I do recommend it. If you have young kids that want it sweet, add a little splenda.

Works great. Easy to install (although I had to order the additional adapter rings). Now water, which did have a strong metallic taste, tastes as good as bottled water.

Nice upgrade on the older units. Slight problem with the flavor pump acting a tad erratic, cant seem to get repeatability with total flavor density related to number of pump strokes. Other than that, fine product, works well.
Cheap plastic     On: 2008-02-17

Seemed shabbily made of plastic, hard to open and fragile with the possibility of cracking when changing the cartridge - was big and bulky on the faucet - and flavored water? Plain water was what I was going for, I wanted a filter that removed taste, not added it - I returned the product and got a filtering pitcher which does not take up so much space and works like a dream. No flavors in this water.
A great purchase!     On: 2008-02-08

I love this! Our very yucky water now tastes great. The flavor is fine but the plain water tastes so good that I prefer it!
Needs a bit of fine-tuning...     On: 2008-02-01

Theres not a whole lot to say about the product. You get what you see. Its a quick install, simple operation, and the filtered water tastes just fine. The flavors -- well, lets just say they need a little more R&R in my opinion. When I bought it, I was expecting an inexpensive path to thousands of bottles of Gatorade Propel water. Instead, what I got was a flat, heavy, sometimes bitter raspberry taste. Even when I added like 4 or 5 squirts to my water bottle, it didnt taste any better. Thats not to say the product is useless. Its a great filter. Pur just needs to figure out the magic that Gatorade employs in its water and put it in the flavor packs.
Perfect!     On: 2008-01-28

Weve had this filter installed in two different homes now, and it meets our needs perfectly. My husband is a water snob and is very picky when it comes to the taste of the water he drinks. The water in our new home smells icky straight out of the tap and the Pur filter makes it smell and taste wonderfully. (It tastes like nothing... just pure, cold water. Yeah!) We dont use the flavor cartridge much since the plain water is so good itself, but its a nice feature to have when we want it. Before this, we used to purchase $10 or so of bottled water and several $3 boxes of individual flavor packets a week, so this is a HUGE savings (and a lot less to tote to the recycle bin!) We even drink more water now than before, too! The installation on our second faucet was a bit trickier than the first, but still easy enough to do by hand. The red/green filter replacement light is a nice feature as well. This is very easy to use and well worth the investment!

This product is great for water drinkers. It saves money thats for sure and the flavor options help the children drink more water as well. They love it as much as I do.
Not What I Wanted     On: 2007-12-04

We bought this product hoping to reduce our consumption of bottled water and thereby our plastic trash (although we recycle). It did not live up to expectations for that purpose. The product works as advertised but it does not taste like most flavored bottled water, most of which also contains Splenda. So, if you like flavored bottled water, be forewarned that this product does not contain any sweetener. We tried to add Splenda and "bottle" our own, but never could get it to taste the same. The "bottling" process was no fun either, which we did not think about in advance. By the time we washed empty bottles and refilled them, we figure we used more water than what we saved by not buying more bottles. Also, we found it difficult to find the flavoring cartridges at our local grocery and ended up making special trips to Target to buy them. In the long run, weve returned guiltily to our bottled flavored water. If you just use regular water in a glass today, this product will be an improvement. If you are replacing bottled water, think twice.
Overall, it is a very useful item!     On: 2007-12-03

I figured I would give this a try because it looked interesting and fun. And, I owned the original Pur horizontal faucet mount, prior to this, which worked well. This one works even better. The water comes out in a steady stream which mimics a real faucet! (I am not sure if the mount was designed slightly differently or maybe I did something differently when I put it in?)

Truth be told, I rarely drink water from my sink because there is a purifier hooked up to my fridge which tastes better than bottled water. However, I do use this at times when I need to boil water. But this is still great for people like me because I also do a lot of entertaining and this gives my guests other options. For example, I have a good friend that enjoys the taste of flavored water. Although, unlike me, she is partial to diet soda.

The taste of the flavored water is not my cup of tea. It sort of tastes like Binaca. But I do not think that should be a detractor for getting this. This would also make a great gift for people that drink other beverages (besides water) when they get thirsty.

I hope in the future Pur will offer these in a variety of colors because my entire kitchen is black. But for now, the stainless steal is a good substitute for the next best thing.

One thing I noticed is that it gets slightly wetter on the bottom (more so than the prior model.) I cant stand a wet sink. So I often wipe the bottom of it after I use it, then I wipe the tip and then I go over and wipe it again just to make sure there isnt any residual dampness.

Overall, it is a very useful item!

Easy to use, Tastes great!     On: 2007-09-26

I just moved and the water in my new apartment was undrinkable. It was cloudy and tasted awful. I got the PUR water filter and now the water tastes great! Such a huge improvement.
Very impressive     On: 2007-09-18

I really like this product. I was able to hook it up to my faucet in about five minutes, and it is so easy to use. I really like the flavors that you can put in your water, and the fact that I am now drinking filtered city water. No more buying cases of water from my local store and then having to recycle the bottles. Now I can just fill up my bottle and take it with me.

My city water taste soooooo much better thanx pur. The kids love the flovor opition to boot, so they actually do drink more water.
Looks nice and the flavor is good too     On: 2007-08-06

To quickly answer the question most people will want to know about, the flavoring option is a mixed bag. Personally, I think it tastes great but I am used to the flavor of "diet" tasting drinks so if you can stand drinks like Crystal Light, Fresca soda, or similar you will probably like this as well. This was a present for my mother, however, and she doesnt like the taste. Adding flavor is completely optional. Its simply a small plastic container that is attached to the front of the purifier and it squirts a small amount of sucralose flavoring into the water dispensed from the separate tap.

Im also please to note that this chrome attachment matches the faucet perfectly and I was lucky enough to have a faucet that didnt need the separate (included) adapters. My only complaint is you never feel like it is installed securely enough. While only finger tightening was enough to use without leaks, it still moves around sideways a lot. Im not sure if that was the intent, but I would have preferred something that locks solidly into place. Installation of the filter is idiot-proof as you are literally placing a square peg into a round hole. Screw the cap on the front into place, installing the flavor cartridge if you desire, and youre ready to go.

The filters are rated to purify 100 gallons before needing replacement. A small electronic light blinks green, yellow, or red when you switch to purified water as an indicator. Most importantly, the water tastes great and I find myself drinking a lot more of it in place of soda or other drinks. That certainly cant be a bad thing. Recommended.
Worth the investment     On: 2007-07-23

Im a very VERY picky person when it comes to water. I cannot stomach the taste of tap water so for years Ive been buying at least a case of water each week.

I was very skeptical about trying anything out of the tap using a filter but I bought this with the raspberry flavoring. If youre going to do it, might as well do it right!

Im actually very surprised. The instructions made it so incredibly easy to install and use the unit and the water that came out didnt have that tap water taste to it. It was extremely clean and the flavoring is a nice added benefit.

Id suggest this to anyone that uses bottled water on a regular basis. It will save you money in the long run and the hassle of recycling.
Genius Product     On: 2007-07-17

I had been looking to buy a water filter for our home to reduce our ever increasing purchase of bottled water, and this new filter fit the bill. I was interested in the flavored water option and decided to give this a try. I love it! First, my husband and I can both taste a difference in the filtered water, which I wasnt sure that we would. We definitely do! The flavor option is great, I bought the strawberry cartridge and love the flavor. The flavor can be very, very mild, or you can press the flavor button several times for a slightly more intense flavor. The flavoring has no sugar or calories which is great for everyone. I love this product!

Kids LOVE it!     On: 2007-06-28

This has to be one of the best products invented in a long time. It was very easy to install. My kids have always been water drinkers but now they love to drink water! And as an added benefit, there is no sugar in it. No more flavored drink mixes, no more soda, no more juice... Flavored water from the tap and it tastes great!
Now to stock up on the flavor cartridges!
