![]() Honeywell 17000 HEPA QuietCare Air Cleaner By: Honeywell Average Rating: 4.5 Total Reviews: 53 More Information Easy to set-up I depended on reviews written by others for this online purchase. I knew I would buy a Honeywell (suggested by my ENT), but which model was important. Several reviews called this model quiet or the other models noisy. I opted for this model and am pleased with everything: it arrived the second day, was easy as pie to set-up, instructions were written in "English" and the performance is excellent. Its been ON since I set it up over a month ago. Today I checked the outer (pre) filter and dusted it off outside and reinstalled it. Manual suggests No Washing! Its a dream so far!!! Awful fish smell from air cleaner We purchased this air cleaner about 4 months ago and suddenly it has a horrible fish smell. If you turn it off the smell goes away and as soon as you turn it back on the room starts to smell like fish. The filters have been replaced. I have never had this issue before with a Honeywell air cleaner. Works Great! When I bought this purifier, I dont think my husband, and therefore, myself, had slept through the night in over a month. He has asthma, allergies, and sinuses, and something in our house was giving him fits. We do have carpet, and we got it cleaned around the same time this came in, so I cant contribute the restful nights all to the purifier, but after the first night using it, we could definitely tell a difference. After a week... no more sleepless nights. It works great! It is loud on the high setting, but so is our air conditioner and heater, so it doesnt bother either one of us, but if youre worried about it, you can just put it on low or medium for the night. All in all, highly recommended. Great product for the price! preschool teacher I recently discovered that I have severe dust mite allergies. I found this on amazon and noticed good reviews so I purchased it. Everything everyone said about it is true. I notice less dust in the room, it feels cleaner somehow, and I wake up with less eye irritation. The only bummer is that it is fairly loud on the highest setting and it makes the room a little colder. If I could afford it though, I would purchase it for other rooms despite the noise and cold. Great little workhorse I owned the Honeywell 17000 for 10 years- since 99- and it finally broke a few months ago. It came reccomended by my allergist-- cost effective and good for a small space. It was a reliable, hard working unit-- I moved 5 times (+?) with it, abused it by not changing the outer filter as requently as it needed and have a cat! I decided to replace the unit with the 17005 as its programmable with remote. So far, so good... Yes the 17000 and 17005 create a white noise, air pushing sound, which I like anyway (kills noises for sleeping), but its not deafening, and if it bothers you throw it in the corner of the room; it will cycle the air the same. I would disagree that its as loud as an a/c-- those things roar! Anyway, these two websites might help you make your decision, too. [...] About CADR Ratings Instant relief!! This was such a simple fix to several problems, sinus pressure and difficulty sleeping, and feeling brainless and singing was pure torture. I was using many otc and herbal remedies to little success. What sleep I would get I would not awaken refreshed from. Sinuses would still be sore and I felt listless and thick headed. Somehow I managed to think of how dirty the air is after 10 months of no rain and gave this unit a try. The first night alone aleviated much of the sinus pressure........then I could sleep better. I find the low setting no problem to sleep to, and I sleep light. After a few days I could sing easily, instead of trying to sing thru the concrete wall of my sinuses..when my voice would jump in my nose or crack in my throat as I had no control. As I still have to work outside a few hours each day, I sometimes get a bit of sinus pressure so I use Sinus Buster when I feel that. I wake up with EVERGY starting my outside chorse at 5:30 AM. Before Id drag until 6-7. I knew it should help, but I had no idea how much. Honeywell 17000 HEPA QuietCare Air Cleaner This is the third Honeywell Hepa Air Cleaner that I have purchased. The first was at a regular retail store and the last two were here at Amazon. As a severe allergy and asthma sufferer, I need more than meds, filters on our house heating & air unit and other measures to contain my allergy outbreaks. I keep one of the Honeywell units in the masterbedroom, one in the den and the other is a "floater" for whichever area is needed. The filter is easy to change and I have not yet had to change any hepa filters (the oldest one is several years old!). I definitely would recommend this product to anyone looking for an Air Cleaner. It does all that it promises and more. Decent Unit, But Loud and Not Extremely Long-Lived We got this filter to supplement one of the old round style ones. It works better than that one because of the three speeds as opposed to two and the better airflow pattern, but while the old round filter is still working fine, this one seems to have burned a wire in the motor after about 5 years. It still works, but the burned wiring smell defeats the purpose. Yes, we replaced the filters on schedule. We do have lots of dust, but that hasnt killed the old one. Certainly not bad, but not Five Star performance. It is easier to remove and replace the filter on this one. Great performance and reasonably priced. I recently started experiencing allergy symptoms and my doctor recommended possibly picking up an air filter. I was assuming I might have to pay as much as a couple hundred dollars for anything with decent quality, but this product definitely proved me wrong. It is fairly quiet, has four main settings and has made a significant difference in the air quality of my room. Ive noticed the collection of dust in my room has decreased and some of the allergy-related symptoms I was having have gone away. I would definitely recommend this model for anyone looking for a reasonably priced option. Good quality, and good white noise. My 10 month-old daughter has had a humidifier in her room during the winter months, and with summer coming up, I was worried about her being able to sleep without some similar white noise. Initially, I thought Id get some sort of electronic "nature sounds" type of device, but I figured I should spend a little more and get an item that actually *does* something other than make noise. Keep in mind, my goal wasnt to find something that was whisper quiet. And in my past experiences with other air purifiers, the quiet ones dont seem to accomplish much anyway. After reading the reviews here, I decided to give the Honeywell 17000 a shot. Im definitely glad I did! On the Medium setting, its almost exactly as loud as the Holmes 2-gallon evaporative wick humidifier that weve been using. It also moves a LOT of air, even at the Low setting. One of the things I really liked about this particular model, is that the HEPA filter is a semi-permanent low-maintenance type, with a wraparound prefilter that gets replaced. Unlike most of the tower and EnviraCare air purifiers, the replacement prefilter is really cheap and easy to find. Also, compared to other air purifiers in this price range, the Honeywell 17000 is built like a tank. A minor additional note: This item may be eligible for FSA reimbursement, if you have allergies and participate in an FSA program. Because its portable, you dont have to do a cap-ex worksheet for reimbursement. Great air purifier We have had one of these units for years and recently bought another to help another asthma sufferer in my family. The white noise helps them sleep, and I notice significantly less dust around where this thing works. I would highly recommend this product. not all button features work This filter has filtered just fine, though the filter check feature using the buttons does not seem to work. It would be nice to now when the carbon pre-filter needs changing without guessing. Also, Honeywells website claims this products HEPA filter never needs changing, but the product box and the manual seem to indicate that it should be replaced every five years. Still doing research on that one. It works! My allergies are slightly better, but not completely gone from the clean air this HEPA filter produces. I can tell the air is cleaner and carries less cat hair, dust, mold, etc, so this is a good thing. It isnt very quiet, you can hear the filter, even on low. Overall I am glad we got this filter, it may be big and clunky, but it works. Toward the bottom end of usefullness The 17000s are 3 speed air cleaners with an average Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 130. This is low powered, near the bottomof the useful air cleaning range. Honeywell 17000 provides 6 air changes per hour in a 12- by 14-foot room, 168 sq. ft. That is my maximum room size recommendation. Installation in an area larger than 168 square feet may lead to disappointment. A soft touch control system allows changing air purification level without waking sleepers. Honeywell True HEPA Air Filtration My favorite feature on the 14 inch round Honeywell air purifiers, of which I have 4, is the bolted locking mechanism. On the 17000 series it provides side mounted access to the filter compartment. Unlike many air purifying devicesin this class, these air cleaners seal tightly, allowing little bypassing of unclean air. Air cleaners in the near $100 area often cut corners, but the 17000 Honeywell has a 99.97% at .3 micron true HEPA filter. Others have HEPA-type air filters, which do not have any standard to conform to. Honeywell has gone to a modular filter system for their 14 inch round air cleaners. These common filters are stacked 2 or 3 high, depending on model. Honeywell 17000 air cleaners use 2. Filter monitors, one for the prefilter and one for the HEPA, are merely timers, not true pressure switches. They give you a reminder to check for dirt build-up, nothing more. A quick tap on either filter monitor button will cause its light to flash up to 3 or 4 times, showing approximate used filter life. A recent upgrade to the Honeywell line is the "lifetime" HEPA filter. This permanent HEPA filter can be gently vacuumed about twice a year. For cleaner air, the "permanent" HEPA filter still needs replacement eventually after several vacuumings, as performance has been found to decline. Note that "lifetime" is a brand name, not a guarantee. Make sure you are getting the lifetime HEPA filter, many 17000s are still in inventory with the old part number 20500 HEPA filter. If the air cleaner has the older filter style, be sure it is discounted accordingly. Neither the activated carbon pre-filter, nor the HEPA filter are washable. I wrap these with extra silk cloth outside the prefilter, wash the silk monthly, and have never bought filters. Air filters are easy to change, without tools, just by unscrewing the round locking mechanism. No Airborne VOC Chemical Capability This is about as inexpensive as a HEPA air purifier can be, yet it still does an adequate job in a properly sized room without airborne chemicals. One user complained that filters had tobe replaced after use in a room with fumes like glue, paint thinner, paint, and nail polish remover. Here is the biggest mistake air purifier buyers make: thinking a little air cleaner can clean up this type toxic environment. Please, at minimum, take these toxic chemicals to the garage! Quietcare is NOT Quiet Honeywell declines to publish noise specifications. Marketing hype is offered instead, preventing consumers from making informed decisions. Without actual decibel level tests, we are left with subjective interpretations of sound. The inexpensive Honeywell air purifiers are not among the quietest. Users uniformly rate them as loud. I have four 14 inch round air cleaners by Honeywell; including two 12520s and a 50250. These have seen intermittent operation for years. I like these dust gobblers; low priced, well sealed HEPAs. But they are way too loud for bedroom use and I would never think of them as a defense against chemicals. Measuring 15.8 x 13.1 x 17.1 inches and weighing 13.4 pounds, the rounded 17000 is among the most portable of air cleaners. Powerful fan but not quiet I purchased mine for my bedroom a we have three dogs and a problem with dust and dander. I had a Honeywell 18155 and was not impressed with it. the 17000 is the most efficient and powerful air purifier of its size. It uses a larger prefilter and True Hepa than its bigger brother the 18155. Now it does have a more powerful fan than the 18155 and creates more white noise. Not a issue with me but may be to others. I like laying it on its side and let the fan with the filtered air blow to wards me as I cant stand dead uncirculated air. So I quit using my other fan and that less energy used. I checked the filter after three days and was impressed with how much dust etc had already collected around the prefilter. Something else I noticed, I use to wake up in the middle of the night with nasal congestion and have to have a bottle of water next to my bed. With the 17000 running I now get a better nights sleep and no congestion; guess that dust and pet dander was effecting my rest after all. I love the 17000 for its compact size powerful fan and a True HEPA filter. I sleep better now than I have ever have. Rumble from unbalanced fan The noise from air movement is acceptable and helps drown out other noise. However my unit generated a low frequency vibration sound due to the squirrel cage fan being out of balance. It is relatively soft injection molded plastic and there are irregular edges on the fins. I was able to remove the fan and trim the excess plastic using a Xacto knife. I also added a small sticky backed piece of lead foil (from a ceiling fan balancing package) to the recessed hub of the fan. The annoying vibration noise is virtually gone. This may be more than most people want to undertake - Honeywell could do better job of fabricating the fan. fantastic for a baby's room Circulating air in an infants room is really important (studies are showing that this helps to prevent SIDS). We have this in our sons room and love it. It provides white noise while cleaning and circulating the air. We also have one in our bedroom and I dont mind the low fan noise either. It is loud if you have it on high though. Great Product The Honeywell 17000 Hepa air cleaner is great. I have two of them on the recommendation of my allergist. My allergic condition has improved somewhat. I keep them on low speed, which is very quiet, during the night. Delivery was fast. Amazon.com is wonderful. Thank you. good deal the air cleaner works good. It was delivered very quick, the price was great and it was exactly what I ordered. A good deal. Works well but sounds like a jet. It works very well and I have noticed a huge improvement in air quality as well as reduced dust. However as some of the other reviewers mentioned this thing is loud. I live 80 feet from 12 lanes of I-5, this air cleaner drowns out the freeway noise (somewhat on low settings but when I turn this jet on high I doubt I would hear a semi crashing through my BRICK wall) - which i consider to be positive but for those of you who live in a quite area you might want find a quiter model. For the money it works well. Clean air Very strong air purifier. With that it is very loud. Design is awkward. Honeywell 17000 air filter Have had these air filters before and they work. But, this time I tried to get the cleanable air filter that never needs replacing. Was trying specifically to order that type. I apparently did not. They said the two different types are identified, but I was looking, am a smart guy, and still made this mistake. So, Id say, their labelling was unclear. Then I had to ship the filters back, at my expense, where they were going to be replaced, but when they got them, they refused. They will return them. So, now am out another $13 for shipping. Not to mention the hassle, and lack of use of the filters for over a month while I mess around with this stuff. Fast, Great Results Usually I dont write reviews for products Ive only had for 45 minutes. I dont know how well this HEPA purifier will hold up, but its working right now and its a life-saver (almost literally). I have mild-moderate asthma, and live in Seattle which has been having serious air quality problems over the past week. The result being that my lung capacity while literally not going outside was 90% according to my peak flow meter, and immediately after a short, non-strenuous trip (to buy an air purifier) was 80% - shakey & light-headed. The air started feeling (and tasting) fresher within a few minutes of turning it on, and after 45 minutes of this purifier on the "high" setting, my lungs are up to 95% of their capacity! I overpaid for it at $150 at my local Bartells, but it was totally worth it to get such fast results. Its pretty loud on high, but the low setting is perfect for use as a noise blocker at night in a fairly quiet big city neighborhood. Its never whisper quiet. I love it anyhow! PS: In the 15 minutes while writing this, lungs improved to 100%, 60 minutes after plugging it in. Not as noise as others have said, but good quality I like the product and think is is helping with our allergies a bunch. I will let you know later if it continues to help. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! This is the 3rd room air cleaner that I have purchased for my home. The previous 2 were Friedrichs and for larger room areas. I purchased this for an upstairs bedroom and I couldnt be more pleased. Set-up was a dream, and I personally find the humming noise it makes while operating soothing. I operate it on high and the noise does not bother me. It sounds like a room air conditioner would. But I suppose that if that type of noise does irritate you, this may not be the model for you. As for air cleaning, I noticed a difference with my allergies almost immediately. It does a great job. 9yrs of Perfection My model 17440 is now 9 yrs old and still going strong. All of these machines make noise, so get the biggest one you can and run it on a low setting. Personally, the noise level in my apt is rather high and the white noise this machine generates is a big help in letting me sleep during the day. I never shut mine off, and often use it as a fan to blow air into or through my bathroom as bathroom fans are often too weak to keep towels from mildewing without some way of moving dry air around. To do this I lay the machine down, and until recently, so the fan blew down across the floor. The way the cage fan is made this adds the suction force of the fan to the weight of the fan and motor which wears out the lower bearing a lot faster. Turning the unit on its other side takes almost all of the load off the bearings as the fan suction counteracts the weight. I recently took my unit apart to oil the bearings, and found the motor to be excellent. Not some cheap piece of Chinese junk, but a real industrial motor. I had to remove a lock collar though that must be destroyed to get it off. Ace Hardware had a replacement collar. Some Pedros bicycle chain oil worked very well. The unit had developed an intermittent squeak and this fixed it. The unit tests both the pre-filter and inner HEPA filter all the time and will tell you if they get dirty. The only thing I have ever done to the HEPA filter is use the vacuum crevice tool to suck any dust particles off the outside of the filter. I have NEVER had to replace the HEPA filter on my unit. It came with 3 pre-filters and I use my HEPA vacuum cleaner to suck the dust back out of that while its still on the round HEPA filter unit. Since I have some pretty bad allergies, I do this with the vacuum cleaner pointed into a steamy bathroom right after a shower so any tiny dust particles get bonded to water molecules. I know thats a pretty anal procedure, but I also have migraine headaches, and after 9 yrs you learn a thing or two. The first one of these I bought after trying about 5 other small non-HEPA filters. They were a complete waste of money. I went from taking 10 Sudafed a day to none ever in about 3 days. It does take awhile for your system to "unload" all the toxic effects of allergens, but the upside of that is a few hours in a dirty environment wont dose you enough to get you symptomatic as long as you can sleep in a clean environment. If you use it cleverly it will even keep mold out of your house by circulating air all the time. This thing could easily last 20 years with good bearing maintenance. This is by far the most valuable appliance in my house. I cant imagine the misery Id be in without it. On low settings it costs almost nothing to run. I rate it ninety two stars. :D Just buy it and get your life back!!! Get Those Nasties Right Out of Your Air Dont be satisfied with dirty or dusty air in your home. It can be harmful and unhealthy but with an air cleaner itll be fresh and filtered just for you. The Honeywell 17000 HEPA QuietCare Air Cleaner is made to operate quietly, so you wont be disturbed as it works. Itll take out all the nasties in the air and leave it healthy as can be. Protect your family from the dangers hidden in the air, this works, really. The 1700 HEPA Not sure it is helping with my two cats all that much; but it must be doing something because the the dusk bunnies in my bedroom are mostly gone..:-) Good Air Cleaner I have allergy based sinus and asthma problems. Within a day or two of the filter running in our bedroom (with the door closed) I noticed I was sleeping much more soundly. I also wake up much less congested and more well rested. To me that speaks to the efficacy of these filters. As others have mentioned the filter can be loud on the high and medium settings. I like to run the filter on high when Im not in the room and then keep it on low while I sleep. I would buy this filter again. Absolutely Great Product Several people have commented that this product is too noisy. Either they got a "bad" one - or I got a really good one. With the unit barely 5 feet away from me, and my TV on with just medium volume - I hear absolutely no "mechanical" sound and just a very pleasant "breeze" sound. And that is exactly what this machine is suppose to do - move air. I even put some essential oil on a cotton ball - hang it in front of the air outlet and the fragrance is "breezed" all over the room. Absolutely Great Product. It Rocks !! Awesome machine, yeah not exactly all that "quiet", but maybe in comparison to other brands it is ...makes the difference between sleeping or not..it maybe have saved my marriage even....my husband said," Its me or the cats "...I bought this Honeywell and now my honey is well ~_- great product and price I have used this product in the bedroom for about 4 months. My husband says that it has helped his allergies a great deal. He no longer wakes up congested. My dog also has allergy problems, he wheezes especially at night. When he sleeps in the bedroom, he seems to have an easier time breathing. We keep it on high during the day and medium at night. Super quiet and excellent price. I would highly recommend this product. I vacuum the filter out everytime I vacuum, about once a week. I cant believe the amount to dust that I get off the filter everyweek. I also have to dust less often. Great filter Unlike other reviews, we have found this air filter to be quiet enough to have on while watching TV. We have really noticed a difference since we have started using it and are very pleased with it. We will likely buy another to help with other rooms. A Must for Moldy Basements In a short span of time, this Honeywell air cleaner has brought my sinuses much needed relief. I live in a basement and have cyclically suffered from sinus aches and pains, stuffiness, et al. Life has not been that good. However, running this machine, which is very portable, at various places has brought clarity to the air. Whatever it was that was causing my sinus troubles - I believe it was mold - is being swept out of the air by this device. Although some of the reviews claim it is loud, I have not been bothered, even at night, by the sound it makes. It has a powerful motor and the air becomes palpably cleaner. Mold and allergy sufferers will likely improve their day to day existence by the air cleaning capability of this machine. Bravo. Nothing like the soothing sounds of a locomotive... This is a great design, nice look, and I was looking forward to getting this given the great reviews. So I purchased the unit. But gotdawg, even on low, it sounds like a dang wind turbine. I had also bought a larger Holmes HAP756 unit for my living room and the Holmes is WAY quieter on the lowest setting. I had to return the Honeywell because I dont like trying to sleep to the sounds of a typhoon. Working well so far. Ive had the Honeywell 17000 Air Purifier for a little over a month now. I put it in my bedroom and I have noticed a difference. I have allergies and spring seems to be the worst for them. Before I got the airpurifier I would wake up in the morning with my nose all stuffed up and my eyes all goopy. After getting the purifier I noticed a difference in both those things with in a week. I still wake up a little stuffed up, but nowhere near what it was before. My eyes have also improved and they arent so runny when I wake up in the morning. During the day I run the purifier on Medium and at night while Im sleeping I run it on low. Im sure as the trees start to bloom Ill be turning that up to High during the day. On low it sounds like a small fan blowing in the room, its not very loud at all. Medium is a bit louder and High is like having the sound of an airconditioner going. I like noise when I sleep so none of these bother me at all. I think Ive been sleeping better because of the white noise of the airpurifier. If you need it perfectly quiet in your room to sleep, this is not the purifier for you. So far Ive been very happy with the performance on the purifier and am thinking of buying another one for another room in my house. Still analyzing My hope for this item was two fold. I wanted to reduce my chronic allergies and to reduce the ammount of year round dust that plages my bedroom. I do believe the allergies are better. The dust however seems unchanged. How this is possible I dont know. As for the sound.. .it is true that on high speed one cannot really call it quiet. It is a simple matter of physics that when moving air in such a way it cannot be silent. I keep mine on low and the white noise it provides is perfectly acceptable. The item is somewhat large. On me it is nearly knee high and probalby 18 inches wide. WORTH IT I have had this product for at least 10 years. It REALLY WORKS!It works so well at collecting particles in the air that we used it in a room in which we were operating an electric saw to cut wood and the filter collected the sawdust. I highly recommend this product. Works For Me I purchased one of these about three months ago. It works better than I expected and I think it is pretty quiet for its size and how effective it is. Im very happy with it. Works For Me I purchased one of these about three months ago. It works better than I expected and I think it is pretty quiet for its size and how effective it is. Excellent Air Cleaner Weve been using the Honeywell 17000 HEPA Air Cleaner for over a week now and my husband said he notices a difference when he wakes up in the morning (not stuffy). I purchased it because I have severe dust mite allergies, etc. I keep the machine on high during the day (yes its loud), but on low at night. I think it is very quiet on the low setting and does not bother me for sleeping. What was bothering me was the little blue power light, so I covered that with paper and tape (I need darkness for sleeping). Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and feel that it meets the needs of cleaning the air of my bedroom. I would recommend it to anyone with the correct bedroom size listed, or smaller. Can't say it's quiet, not very loud at least loud at the high mode, acceptable in the bed room at the low mode excellent in deodorization super fast shipping considering buying their other products that are more quiet I think it's good. Product was shipped in a timely manner. We use it all the time. I think it elworks pretty good, but I dont really know how to judge it. It runs and we think there is a difference. Good price for tried and trusted product These type Honeywells have been around a long time. The $108 price is good. Its quite satisfactory for protecting me in a room where there is intermittent smoking out in the main areas. One has to get used to the air fan noise, particularly when it is on high speed. But actually I like the middle speed because it provides "white noise" that filters out other sounds I dont want to hear. But honestly, how would you know it was making a difference? I bought it for my childs allergies, which seem to have subsided. But I dont know if thats because of the change of seasons; her growing older; my renewed efforts to vacuum and dust; new organic sheets; this air cleaner; or all or none of the above. At any rate, I figured it couldnt hurt. And the white noise is nice if you have trouble sleeping. Seems to work well. But honestly, how would you know it was making a difference? I have this in my office and home. It is a great little air cleaner. It has a very good fan/air flow. The air filter is very easy to clean. I even clean the "disposable" prefilter by simply using the wand on my vacumn cleaner or a shop vac. The main hepa is rated permanent, I doubt that, I would suggest replacing it every 3 -4 years. I think the fan is noisy, but some people find the sound soothing at night. I run this 24/7. Over all it is hard to beat the quality of this and the reasonable price. works great loud on any setting but low, but works well and is our second purchase of the same item works great loud on any setting but low, but works well and is our second purchase of the same item Not that loud I dont know what all the fuss is over this air purifier being too loud. Yes, its not as quiet as the term QuietCare would have you believe, but really it just sounds like a regular fan. It quickly becomes background noise and you forget about it. As for whether or not it works - I can just say that subjectively the air smells better and Ive been less congested since I bought it. Placebo vs. it actually working? I dont know. The only complaint I have is that it says everywhere that it has a permanent filter - never needs changing. But it does have a prefilter that needs changing every few months. So its really not that permanent, is it? Overall, though, I like this product and plan on buying another one for my kids room. air cleaner In a word. LOUD!!! Even on the lowest setting it sounds like it will pull the covers off the bed. It is very efficient. Does a great job and it really gets the air clean. I have two cats and a dog and it takes care of any dander in the room. But it is very LOUD! Honeywell HEPA 17000 Air Cleaner by: ralphfur On: 2007-01-05 I bought three of these units to place in our home. I have one in our bedroom, one in my office and one in the family room. These units do a very good job of cleaning the air. The secondary carbon filter really shows up how much dirt is being taken out of the air (dust really shows up agains a black carbon filter). I clean the carbon filter one a month and replace them (the carbon pre filters) every three months. The one negative I have for these units is that they are NOT all that quiet due to a less than well balanced fan unit. On low the wabble in the fan is not enough to make too much additional noise, but on high it is really noticable. The noise can be quite irritable on the low setting and even after 5 months of running one in our bedroom, I still have not gotten to the point where I can ignore it. The sound level (on low) is about the same as a tower type of computer running. On high, the unit sounds like a small hair dryer. If you can sleep with a computer running in your room, this unit will not be a problem if you run it on low. If not, then you might want to consider something else. Overall, the units do clean the air very well and you have to expect a certain amount of noise due to air movement. Loud but worth it We placed this unit in our daughters room about 6 months ago. She has asthma, allergies and is prone to colds. She has had far fewer symptoms since we purchased the unit. Another plus is that although we find it loud, it appears as white noise to her and helps her fall asleep and stay asleep. A great buy! I recommend this highly effective machine and you cant beat this reasonable price. I plan to buy one for my own bedroom. Only problem = TOO LOUD I love this air purifier. Its very effective and very reliable. I have allergies, and this has been a life saver. All of my air-borne related allergies have been noticably reduced. If fact, I recently bought a second one. Theres no substitute for a true HEPA filter, and this one is a dandy. And, unlike many purifiers, this filter is PERMANENT. The carbon pre-filter needs replacing every few months, but theyre inexpensive. This purifier is virtually maintenance free, and it has a 5-yr warranty. But be warned: when placed on the "high" setting, this purifier is as loud as a freight train during a tornado storm. So the term "QuietCare" is highly misleading. The noise is tolerable on low and medium, but the high setting is anything but "quiet." When Im sleeping, I like a background fan noise, so it works out fine for me. But if youre trying to watch TV or listen to your stereo, youll need to turn this off or move it to another room. I have a second one in my basement that runs 24/7, so the noise level is irrelevant for that purpose. This would garner 5 stars if it werent for the loudness on the high setting. Great value - works well by: Anonymous On: 2006-05-09 Originally I purchased an IFD air purifier. They simply dont work. To replace the IFD air purifier I purchase the Honeywell 17000. The unit works really well at removing dust and other airborn particles. The unit is not as "whisper quiet" as the model name would suggest - but I do not have trouble sleeping while it is on. It sounds like a small box fan on a low setting - which is not too bad at all really. For the price - I would highly recommend this unit over others. Mine Lasted 6 Years!!!!! I just bought my second Honeywell air cleaner. Actually I bought 2 more. I bought one 6 years ago and ran it constantly. The motor is finally wearing out. This air cleaner worked great in my daughters bedroom... she is severely allergic to dust and she has related asthma. It works so well that every week when I go to dust her room, there wasnt much dust to remove. I am buying one for my bedroom as well. Id like to have one in every room of the house! Awesome product for a great price! Great quality, great product! Although this is a louder unit than I had hoped, it does an excellent job, and has improved our air quality substantially. Weve noticed vast improvements in our allergies. For the price, its really a great buy. I am going to buy one for each room. Great quality, great product! Its helped dramatically with my many allergies (I just found out the allergies are causing my asthma that Ive had for 9 months). The only gripe I have with this machine is that it states that its "Quietcare". On high, this thing is pretty loud! However, I had a more inexpensive model (I think it was Honeywell 50010) and it was deafening, so this is an improvement. Otherwise, this machine is giving me EXCELLENT results. I can sleep through the night without my eyes watering or dry mouth. Its improved my breathing (my family tells me I sound better) and helped with my snoring problems. At the price theyre selling it for here, Id pick one up. If noise bothers you just keep it on the low setting. It really is a good product! |
