![]() Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat By: Soleus International Inc. Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 529 More Information Worked great but died after 3 years I bought this unit in late 2006. Its quiet when running and keep a room in my finished basement dry. Ive been using it about 8-9 months each year during 3 seasons 24*7, with a hose attached to drain the water. I just wish it could last longer. I have another dehumidifier from another brand. That one is still running... Almost Perfect This unit does its job 100%. My only gripe is having to change the bucket out every morning before work. I live in the North East and please keep in mind that the humidity level here this summer has been unpleasantly high. I use this unit in my partially finished basement and it works like a dream. The motor is unbelievably quiet on high and is not heavy to carry when the bucket is full. I would definitely recommend this item to anyone searching for a best bang for your buck kinda guy or gal. Works well - wish the tank were larger The dehumidifier works well and is LOW in noise output. I wish the tank were larger. Not made to last It worked well for a week or so, although the dumping apparatus and its housing seemed flimsy. One day it just stopped working. It powered on correctly, seemed to be working, but collected no water in very humid conditions. I tried again after giving 24 hours of rest with the power off but with no success. I was very disappointed and certainly would not recommend it. Sucks it right out! I cant believe how amazing this thing is. We have a finished basement and it gets a little musty in the summertime. Weve tried smaller and cheaper dehumidifiers thinking that if we placed them in various places they should collectively do the job. That was a big mistake. Ive only had the Soleus now for about two months and Ive never had to call customer service so I cant testify to what others have complained about. All I can say is that this thing works amazingly well. Im constantly amazed at just how much water its able to suck out of the air in a relatively short period of time. According to our humidistat, we went from 63% humidity down to about 45% in a matter of three hours. The quiet mode is indeed very quiet although definitely not whisper silent. Imagine if someone is in the room next to yours and they are blow drying their hair. Thats about the level of sound. Soleus Dehumidifier Review Drops the humidity only slightly but heats up the room significantly. I dont recommend it and wouldnt purchase another Soleus product. Works very well when it works; poor manufacturer support We got this to replace a noisier old 40-pt model when we had our basement improved and started spending more time down there. After researching reviews here and elsewhere, I did what I often do when there seems to be an occasional manufacturing error in an otherwise good product--bought it factory-refurbished on another site, since any problems with the original parts are usually resolved on repair and I get a better deal in the end. Unfortunately the refurb did what some others have reported; worked great for a few months and then simply stopped working. It came with a warranty (or I wouldnt have bought it), but we had to ship the unit at our cost from Virginia to Soleus in California. So the money saved in buying a refurb was more than defrayed in the end by the high cost, delay and annoyance of the return. At one point Soleus had an agreement with Sears stores to repair some of their products but that agreement is no longer, and its a shame because this is a great product line. It appears that offering it through Amazon with the Square Trade service plan is a step in the right direction, since the mfr. support is seriously lacking. That said, this model is nicely designed and performs well without generating a lot of noise and heat. Its easy to move, either by rolling it or using the handle on top. The continuous drainage was easy to set up with a 5/8" interior diameter (ID) bit of flexible hose (the kind you can get cut to length at home stores), and is easily removed and replaced if you want to use the tank temporarily, say in a room without a floor drain. On initial startup, it seems to take a day or two to get going, but once "primed" it pulls at least as much moisture out of the air as our old Whirlpool workhorse. Despite the troubles, I really like it. With the Amazon Prime free shipping, this good price, and the Square Trade service plans offered here at Amazon, this would seem to be a much better deal than we got. If you decide to gamble and skip the optional service plan, save your box, register your warranty and brace yourself for a possible headache. So far, our replacement unit is kicking along great, but I have been scouting other brands if it dies again. Sadly the most obvious substitute right now would be an LG, and we have had another service nightmare with an LG over the range microwave to be reviewed elsewhere, so hopefully if the replacement Soleus conks out it will wait long enough for another quiet, well-designed model to come on the market. Worked great but died after 2 years. Purchased my first one in 2008. It died in early 2010. (fan kept working but no longer filled the reservoir with water. After reading all of the reviews of others out there, it still seemed like this was the best choice, since I liked the performance up until it died. So I am taking the risk and hoping the new one lasts longer than the previous. I use it for a 1100 sq ft office space and it works very well. The space is much more comfortable and requires less heating. It is nice and quiet. ( Its not like I sleep next to it but, esp at the low setting I think it is very quiet.) I normally have it on the medium setting and it fills its reservoir every day. I empty it every day to water the planters so I actually like that it has to be emptied so often- keeps my plants alive. Positives: Works well and makes my 1100 sq foot office much more comfortable. Takes a lot of water out of the air. Makes me water my plants Negatives: First one I had died after only 2 yrs. and is now landfill Not designed for disassembly/ recycling. A Very ugly product. Reservoir tray is not as easy to disengage as I would have liked. Air outlet vent on top has a flap to direct the air where you want but can also be inadvertently closed (which might not be good for the product if you run it with the vent closed) If it would have lasted I would have given it 4 stars. If it lasted and the design was nicer, 5 stars. really quiet but insufficient Noise was a major consideration when we bought this and we were very pleased at how quiet it was. Unfortunately, in a side-by-side test it only extracted about 60% of the water that our old one did and this wasnt enough to keep the humidity below 50%. We ended up getting the 40-pint Danby which wasnt as quiet as the Soleus but quieter than the old one and worked just as well. Be sure drainage duct slopes down from the main unit This is an edit to my review below. Our dehumidifier sits on a basement floor, not sure how level the floor is. I put an old plastic mouse pad on the left side of the Soleus dehumidifier to be sure there was a downward slope toward the drainage port located on the right side of the unit. It works! I measured over four cups of condensed water yesterday, and today the same. -------------------------- We bought this Soleus dehumidifier in June of 2008. We used the hose drain and all seemed well. We covered the dehumidifier during the winters to reduce dust collecting in small parts. For the summer of 2010 we use the drainage bin. Now the dehumidifier drains less than a tablespoon in 24 hours; maybe thats all it ever did, but right now things are very humid from heavy rainfall or a poor dehumidifier function. I read the manuals troubleshooting page and for reduced function of the dehumidifier is says "Remove the obstruction from the discharge duct or intake duct." The manual does not show where specified ducts are located. I tilted the dehumidifier to loosen crud as brown bits of sediment fall out of the unit when I tilt it, cleaned the intake screen again, tilted the exhaust blades open, and made sure the dehumidifier was level to facilitate drainage from the right side drainage port. It is now ca-lumping along on the high setting, so will see if any improvement in moisture removal. --- See edit above. Great product I have allergies to mold and recently moved into an apartment that has very little sun, and lots of moisture, and is moldy. The first month that I was there I was hardly able to breathe. I did use some of those crystals that sucked water out of the air, but soon realized that I would have to purchase a dehumidifier. So far I have been very happy with my purchase. I have had this for about a month and my bathroom is much drier now. In fact, I have to turn it off at night because it works too well and my skin gets really dry! I leave it on the "Quiet" mode and rarely can hear it outside of the bathroom. The 40-pint size is not too small for what I use it for and I find myself emptying it out about every 2-3 days. The only thing I will say is that when it is on any other mode besides "Quiet" the bathroom does get noticeably warmer and I would caution anyone who uses this to make sure that you have ample space behind the dehumidifier so that the air can circulate okay. All in all, it was a very good purchase and has been worth every penny so far! DOA Unit turned on but would not remove any water from the air in a very moist area. It was run for 10 hours and did not produce a drop of water. Worked well for 2 weeks and died Worked well for 2 weeks and died. It stopped pulling water out of air and just ran continuously. I have a hydrometer, so I know what the moisture content is in my room. The product looks nice, is fairly quiet, and worked well for a little while. Im glad it broke within 2 weeks so that I can return it to Amazon for a refund. I hear using the 1 year warranty is impossible with the manufacture. Now I have to look for something else. Good luck folks. Makes living in Florida much more bearable This thing is very quiet, and pulls a large amount of water out of the air. I immediately began to sleep better and can barely hear it running at all in the next room. I dont have experience with other dehumidifiers so I cant really compare, but you will be happy with this one. Great little Dehumidifier I shopped for these for too long before pulling the trigger on this unit. Works great in our little street level 300 sf basement. Fan runs all the time, but it filled up the tank 1/2 way in about 12 hours. And as a added bonus (no heat downstairs), it warmed the room a couple degrees. The humidistat went from 60% to 40% overnight. So far so good. Excellent little machine General: We purchased this little Soleus in August of 2008 and it is still going strong c. 2 years later. We love the portability; it is not too heavy for me (57" 140lb woman) to move from room to room, up stairs, or even into the car. In general we keep it in our damp basement and it maintains a very livable environment. Operation: This 40-pint Soleus is very decently quiet even at the High setting. Our basement is c. 800 sf and this machine handles the space well. We empty the water collector about 2x day in hot humid summer weather, about once a week in the much drier winter. The bucket is very easy to empty albeit somewhat unwieldy when full of water. I recommend using near some kind of sink or drain just for the ease of use, since it is not advised to move the thing around when full of water (sloshing occurs). I am about to open the side access hole to insert a continual drain hose and drain it directly into our sump well; I will update with more information on that when some time has passed. Specifically I want to know if it becomes immobile once that hole is opened, or whether one can still wheel it around to use sans hose. Specific product successes: With the car doors closed, this gadget will dry out wet automotive carpeting like magic overnight. It is quiet enough to use in the bedroom during extremely humid nights, especially on the lower settings. All in all we are extremely pleased with this model and are definitely considering Soleus larger ones for semi-permanent installation. Caveats: Made in China. In our view, this is really the sole drawback of the machine, and I hope it does not impact the quality of the materials & fabrication long-term. Quiet and extremely effective dehumidifier I bought this unit last week for my ground floor apartment in San Francisco. Within the first two days, the resevoir was full and the environment in my apartment was noticably less damp. It is easy to empty and totally portable. Not only is it working well, but it is very quiet. I had heard horror stories about chainsaw-volume dehumidifiers, but this one is precisely the opposite. It has three settings - high, medium and quiet - and the quiet setting is literally that. It is so quiet that I am able to run it all night in my bedroom with no sleep disturbance. Buy this dehumidifier. broken after only one year. It worked well, but only for one year. Called manufacture, they say out of warranty, cant help. Be aware. Buy something more reliable. 2 years and still going strong 2 years ago I bought the 25-pint version of this dehumidifier which is no longer available on Amazon. I run it from about April - October each year in our basement due to the North Carolina summer humidity. It still works great after two years, and every day or two it is full of water. In the winter time it doesnt suck any water out of the air since its so dry outside. Ive noticed it vibrates a little louder than when I first got it. The humidistat has never worked to turn off the machine when the room reaches a certain humidity level. So, I do have to remember to turn it off when I dont need it running. I got this dehumidifier because our basement was constantly invaded by those little potato bugs and I read online that it was due to the humidity. With this dehumidifier running we only get a few bugs a week, instead of hundreds. I am very happy with this product! Couldn't Be Better This unit has bee running in my super damp basement for two years and still doing a good job. I did have to hook it up for constant drain because it was filling the bucket faster than I could empty it. It would be full every day when I came home from work and also when I got up in the morning. I dont know how long it took to fill the bucket but it was less than 9 hours. It is as they all say, quiet as a church mouse. While it does heat up the air a bit, the basement is dry and I can use it, its a wonderful thing. Really poor design on tank overflow switch The metal "spring" which engages the on/off overflow switch broke off. I cant see anyway to replace it. Asked Tech Support for help. Soleus said tough luck. This is a design fault that they should address, as the lever can, and does, easily get caught on the drain pan when removing it. $250.00 down the drain. Naturally, this happened just after the warranty ran out. Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat nice dehumidifier with a big flaw The dehumidifier worked fine until a thin metal tab that is activated by the basin float caught on the basin as it was being removed. The thin metal tab was slightly bent and now the unit will not operate. Once the tab is bent, it isnt possible to get it bent back into the correct position to operate the switch. According to Soleus customer service, a replacement switch is not available. A small, hidden, fragile metal tab that gets caught on the basin during normal operation and turns the unit into a $200 waste... seems like a really terrible design. Mine was about 2 years old when it died; hopefully theyve fixed this on more recent models. If you chose to buy one of these, be aware that availability of repair parts is spotty, and the design has at least one fragile point that can render the entire thing useless. great dehumidifier Great humidifier is very quiet and effective, much better then another we had purchased Don't waste your money. We bought this last summer, used for 1 1/2 months. Plugged it in 1 week ago, it doesnt work. (the fan does) piece of junk All Soleus junk is just that- JUNK. Mine lasted 5 months, and the next summer it wouldnt pull any moisture. Called Soleus and was told too bad, the warranty is up.. They have no repair people in the U.S., they dont repair them themselves, and wont sell you a part if you could fiqure out what is wrong with it. All they do is import them from China and cash your check. Buy American. Great performance and QUIET, with some caveats We have a split level house, with the bottom floor (finished) being at or below grade in some places, so its constantly humid down there. I bought a GE dehumidifier when we moved in, but unfortunately we also use that floor/room for the TV room, and the GE unit (bought at Lowes I think) was LOUD, BIG and UGLY. Worked great, however due to noise (rattled like crazy in addition to high noise level of condenser/fan) and lack of any kind of aesthetic consideration, was just a terrible choice for a main living area. Eventually I sold it and decided to try out the Soleus Air since I had seen that it was designed to be quiet AND it looked like something I could be ok with in the living room, design-wise. Turns out that it is indeed quiet, even on the high setting. Certainly not loud and rattly like the old GE unit, which required you to turn it off any time you wanted to watch TV, listen to music, or even have a conversation without yelling. Also, works pretty well, as I have a hygrometer downstairs to monitor the relative humidity. Overall, highly recommended with the following caveats: CONS: - expensive relative to other dehumidifiers in this performance class (unless you count noise level as performance) - Runs CONTINUOUSLY! This could be a biggie for the more energy conscious. The GE I had ONLY came on when the RH went above a certain level. Well Soleus takes a different approach and has the unit to ALWAYS run....the only difference is that when the RH rises above the range set, the condenser kicks in...otherwise, just the fan is running (and fwiw, you can hardly tell the difference in noise level between the times when just the fan is running, versus fan + condenser running). I wish I had known about this aspect, because I really dont want to run the thing all the time, and at least with the GE, you got some periods of complete quiet. Although this unit IS quiet at all running levels, its still not silent, so there is the noise issue. - Settings are ridiculously high (in terms of RH %). This is probably the biggest drawback of this unit imo. There are only three settings on the unit for humidity levels, and the LOWEST only gets you to 50%! I think the other ones put the RH at 65 and maybe 75%...which just seems crazy humid to me. WTH. So if you want to reduce the RH to something BELOW 50%, you need to set the unit to run the condenser continuously, which is not something I want to do. - Pull out water tray is awful as mine "sticks" and I have many times sloshed water all over my hw floors because of it. I think the problem is the tray/reservoir is fully made from plastic, so it gives and flexes a lot when full of water...this creates pressure and resistance when you try to pull it out. The much stiffer GE tray never had this problem BUT it also was the source of the mind numbing rattle. This could easily be improved with a little better design, or maybe by using less flexible plastic. PROS: - Looks great, by far best looking dehumidifier if you plan on putting this in a visible living space. - QUIET. By far most quiet dehumidifier I have heard. - Works great ...even though its quiet, it seems to pull as much moisture out as my old unit. - Small and portable - if you need to transport it, it has a handle I would probably give this 3.5 stars if I could, primarily because of the ridiculously high RH settings, and the continuous running. But I havent seen anything better on the market, so for now, I would still recommend it to someone in the market for one to put INSIDE a house (as opposed to an unfinished basement area). Worked till it failed after warranty had expired I had the unit in my day light basement and it saw occasional action from time to time. On the plus side it is a quiet unit and it worked till it failed. On the downside the unit failed a month after its warranty had expired. Given the usage rate I was expecting a much longer life cycle. I attempted to contact the company but no response thus far. For my next unit Ill probably go with a Kenmore unit from my local Sears store. I may have better luck with them when that unit breaks down. Lifesaver! Completely worth every penny. I bought this dehumidifier a year ago because I moved into a basement level apartment that was known as the "cave" to people who visited. I live in a small one bedroom apartment so I wanted a dehumidifier that was quiet and light enough for me to move around need be. I shopped everywhere to get the right one and Im so glad I did my research. I havent had a single problem with the Soleus and it is very quiet. I keep it in my living room and it is barely noticeable. It sucks up 40 pints a day and I havent had any hiccups with it. I love love love this product and it is worth every penny. Its more expensive than most, but you get what you pay for. My apartment is at a comfortable humidity level all the time now. Good while it lasted Like other reviewers, I had a good experience with the portable Soleus 40-Pint dehumidifier...while it worked. I received it in September 2007, and it had quit working by the end of summer 2009. The motor/fan continued to run, but it completely ceased removing water from the air. Back when it was running correctly, it was reasonably quiet and effective, and I liked its relative portability. I never had trouble with it overflowing, although it was common to slosh some water out of the bucket while emptying it. Since I dont enjoy trying to figure out how to properly recycle such bulky items, I wont be buying another one. A fantastic investment We have been battling high humidity in our home since we moved in in 2003. Unless the heat is running or the AC on full blast, which happens only during three months of winter and two months of summer where we live, the humidity in our house is 70-80% all the time. We have scrubbed mold off everything we own twice a year. In 2005 we purchased a $4000 whole-house dehumidification system that did NOTHING to the humidity. The company who installed it told us our house was possessed and gave us all our money back. This year we decided to try the Soleus. We purchased two units, one for each end of the house. Our humidity is now UNDER CONTROL. Since we purchased the units, the humidity in every room in the house is usually between 40% and 45%. Both units are running on the "quiet" mode. Yes we can hear them, but its not really annoying and actually kind of nice at night when sleeping. They do heat up the room a bit, which I like. In the summer the extra heat might make the AC kick on earlier which is also good for the humidity. For the unit in our playroom, which is on slab, we dump the bucket once every day. In our bedroom, we ran some tubing from the unit through a hole in the floor that was already drilled by the cable company, into the crawl space and out the door. So we never have to empty it. We have had some small problems, for example the unit with the drain tubing will sometimes start draining into the bucket instead for some reason, and makes a god-awful noise. We turn it off and back on again and that seems to do the trick. I have read the bad reviews about how these units do not last very long. But honestly if we have to buy two new ones every year, it will still be totally worth it. We were going to have to sell our house, and thanks to these dehumidifiers we dont have to. I am completely thrilled with this purchase. Premature Failure Poor Customer Support I purchased the Soleus and it quit drawing water from the air in the first 6 mos. The Soleus service rep chuckled as she advised me to just buy a new one since shipping and minimum service charges would be substantial [...] bucks plus when you throw in the parts - like how else can you fix it - without parts? I since bought a Frigidaire with a five year warranty on the sealed system and it works fine - albeit a bit noisy vs Soleus. I hauled the Soleus to the dump and promptly threw it in the junk appliance area where it belongs. Sail boat dehumidifier I am delighted with this second unit after 4 weeks of running unattended drying my large sailboat. the humidistat truly works, it is not that noisy at max rate. the first unit was defective probably from the factory as it run for only a few minutes and died. (maybe faulty controls?). the response from both Soleus and specially Amazon was first class as good as it gets!!. As good as it used to be!. First time I returned a product to Amazon and the handling was superb!. this excellent handling of the warranty by itself will make me buy some more stuff from Amazon as I am sick of the little hurdles and inconveniences regular stores are increasingly using to make things difficult for the client. Has Issues I purchased this dehumidifier about 3 months ago to use in my under-the-house garage. It is very quiet. I cant hear it unless Im right next to it. And it sucks moisture out of the air although its humidity setting cant be set as low as my previous dehumidifier and doesnt get the garage as dry. The biggest issue with this device is the "float" to detect when the reservoir is full. It does NOT work reliably. When the reservoir becomes full, the water overflows onto the floor (about 2/3 of the time). And it is very difficult to remove a full or nearly full reservoir without sloshing some of the contents onto the floor. SO, unless you enjoy checking and emptying the reservoir frequently (in my case, twice a day) OR you hook it up to a drain hose and dont use the reservoir (hard to do in below house level garage), this is not the unit for you. I would not purchase this unit again. broken after 4 months I bought this for my basement in December and it worked until April, though I had to empty the bin every night. Then a few days ago, after emptying the bin, I happened to slid the bin into position at a slant angle then the float to shut down the machine when the water level is high got stuck with the microswitch on the main body. I tried to pull the bin out of the slot and then the small stainless plate that pushes the microswitch broke... The machine no longer operates unless I push the switch manually with a stick or something. Yes I was inserting the bin at a slant angle but it should not get stuck and break so easily, especially if the size of the water bin means that you have to empty it as frequently as every day. As I do not want to go through the pain of dealing with the customer service, I punched the hole on the side of the machine and set it up for continuous draining. I put in a stick to keep the machine on permanently. But it now doesnt look the machine is only 4 months old any more. Now I need another machine for my first floor and do I consider buying another Soleus? No! It needs design polish for reliability! The only good thing I say about this machine is its quietness. Not lasting Long I purchased this dehumidifier in Oct. 2008 for my basement. It worked fine for about a year and quit working last winter. It was quite and pulled large amount of moisture out of air when it worked. The fan still runs and blows air out of vent but it can not withdraw any water from air. I expect the unit last longer than one year considering its cost (>$200). Very disappointed. Good Start -- Poor Finish After approximately two years, the CFM-40E unit I bought from Amazon, runs fan only now with nary a drop of moisture pulled from our basement. The manuals troubleshooting help tells you to clean the filter or check for blockages in the intake duct or discharge duct. Cleaning the filter is routine maintenance and we have been faithful about that. Checking and clearing obstruction from either of these ducts is not intuitive and is definitely not covered in the skimpy owners manual. As other owners have noted in previous reviews, it works great out of the box for 1-2 years and then quietly fades away. I too was expecting more longevity from a dehumidifier than 2 summers. stop working after 18 months Got this unit on 10/2008. It stopped pulling out water, but the fan still works. I expected the product to work for at least 4-5 years. Didn't last long This died after two years. I have another that weve used for at least 15 years. Thats still going. When it worked, it was great. I would have given it a great review. However, longevity is equally important to me. I wont get another one. Best purchase ever / Soooooo Quiet This Soleus Dehumidifier is so quiet you have to go up to it to see if its still on !!! Sucks the water out of the air very quickly & without the high noise problems other units have. I am so happy I bought this one, and not some other one. Removeal of the water bucket is not as easy as some others, but the less noise is more than worth dealing with the water bucket!! Best Buy, dont pass this one by!!!!! Fine little dehumidifier After doing some research and reading the reviews on Amazon, I ordered this dehumidifier. Quietness was upmost so the unit could be used in the bedroom and many of the reviews indicated this unit was quiet. We also purchased the Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer in order to verify the humidity at any given time. We live in a relatively humid area. The humidity ranges from 60 to 65% within the apartment during winter with windows shut. This unit has effectively reduced the humidity to the requested level of 50% within two hours or less on most days (excluding rainy days or after taking a shower). Our apartment is a one bedroom and about 695 square feet. The unit is not quiet while the compressor is on which is most of the time. Apparently its size requires an almost constant use of the compressor. Since price was a factor, we will have to live with this issue. On the other hand, it has been placed in the hallway just outside the bedroom, and the noise is not significant enough to impact sleep. It has gotten me thinking about the cost to run over time. It might have been ultimately better to have gotten a more powerful unit. (I recall my parents had a dehumidifier in their home that was always so quiet I often wondered if it was actually on! My mother assured me that it was functioning and very effective. Of course, it was a much larger unit with a huge opening on the top, about 8 in. by 30 in., and it was dehumidifying the whole first floor of the house.) Another factor is the frequent emptying of the water container. It doesnt slide out readily (which is probably a good thing) and requires two trips a day. Perhaps another reason for purchasing a larger unit. Having said all this, I cannot complain about its performance. Im pointing out the issues with noise and water capacity for anyone needing that information. As long as it lasts at least a year, I will feel it was money well spent. Of course, I hope it lasts a lot longer! as advertized...quiet i wanted this for the bedroom; is it quite quiet. Has worked well for 2 months. I wish it had a timer, however, in order to turn it on or turn it off while i am gone. also, it does not have a humidistat. if you want something quiet that does a good job of removing moisture. this is great. Fabulous so far! I ordered this unit a few weeks ago based on its high number of positive reviews. I wanted to replace my Whirlpool Model# AD40USR1 unit that was driving me crazy with its loud noise when running. I live in a very humid climate and our apartment doors/windows are not sealed very well, so we primarily use the dehumidifier on an as needed basis- when the humidity seeps in enough to be a problem. When we use the unit we have to set it up in our living room, so the noise factor is an important one for us! I have used this unit a couple of times now and it seems to work perfectly. The noise level is very low- we are thrilled! I can actually talk to my husband or to someone on the phone while standing right next to the unit and not be impacted by the noise of the unit, which was impossible to accomplish with the Whirlpool. I feel like I wouldnt hesitate to keep this unit running while we had company. Ive emptied the bucket a few times already so it seems to be dehumidifying as I would expect. The overall size of the unit is also a little smaller than my old one (both 40 pint units) so it is a little easier to store and I really like the handle on top, it makes it easier for me to carry. This one does not have wheels, which is ok by me. My previous one had wheels, but they didnt really wheel straight when you pushed it and usually they got hung up on the rugs so I ended up picking it up all the time anyway- and the handles were on the sides so it was a strain on my back. The Soleus handle is on top so you can bend at the knees when lifting and just let the unit hang down straight on your arm, avoiding the back bending part. So far we are thrilled, but I have to admit I havent used it for very long. My only negative comment about the design would be the water collection bin is a little hard to take out to dump. The edges are a little flimsy so you cant just yank the bin out and in when dumping water, you have to be a little careful. But in the grand scheme of things Im happy to be a little more careful to have a unit that is so quiet and works well! Two units each broke after only a few months use. The first unit worked for 4 months and we turned it off in the Fall. When we turned it back on in the Spring, the compressor failed to work. Customer service was not very responsive and it was like pulling teeth to get a replacement unit. We finally received a replacement unit but had to pay for shipment. The second unit stopped working after about 2 months. Once again, we turned the power off and the compressor did not work when we turned the unit back on. I would not recommend this unit. Sadly, not a drop Didnt work for me. Put in on the first floor, nothing. Put it in the basement, nothing. Put it in the master bath, not a drop! If my DH hadnt thrown away the box, wed be returning the darned thing. It is whisper silent We have had several dehumidifiers over the years and they have all been noisey. This one is very, very quiet. I bought it to use it in a small office I built to use for my photography hobby and I could not believe how quiet and efficient it is. It really gets rid of the moisture and you hardly notice it is there. I will be buying another one for my house. The only minor complaint I have is the handle for emptying the container. It needs a new design to make it handier and less prone to spilling. Dead at 4 months This thing just stopped working suddenly after four months. The fan would run, but no water would collect. Setting changes did not make any difference. I do not recommend this product. I will never buy a Soleus product again. great dehumidfier This dehumidifier is just what we needed. We have an older home with a dampness, mold and mildew problem. This really took out so much moisture and helped our house be healthier. The only problem was that when it is filled to the top it does overflow and is difficult to empty. We liked the quietness of it so that it could be in our living space. Does what its suppose to and very quiet! Ive only had this for a few months but it works very well and is very quiet. No complaints at all so far, I would have no problems recommending this to a friend. Don't buy it This item worked for 3 weeks, and then stopped collecting even a drop of water. I am dealing with Soleus vendor to return the defective unit, and they are flippant and crass. The conversation I had with the Soleus representative leads me to believe they have LOTS of complaints regarding this product. It doesn't stop running when it's full! Hi, this dehumidifier was great at the beginning. But now if it gets full, itll just keep running instead of turning itself off. And it gets a big puddle of water on the basement floor which defeats the very purpose for me getting it. Am I doing something wrong? What customer service??? I purchased on of these and the humidistat died after a month. The thing would only run on continues. I emailed them 3 times from their support page and called them 4 times just to get voice mail. No return calls or email.... I will NEVER buy their junk again. "Disposable" dehumidifier This product does all of the positive things that other reviewers mention: its quiet and lowers the humidity of my basement. It doesnt last beyond about 12 to 14 months though. I have now used 3 Soleus dehumidifiers and they have all stopped working after about 8 to 14 months. The one that stopped working under warranty (less than 12 months) was replaced by Soleus after I had to ship it back to California for them to service. If you do decide to purchase this product save your box in case you have to ship it back to Soleus (and be ready for a significant shipping charge). It takes about 5 to 10 calls to reach a live person from Soleus customer service. I asked their customer service about a specific "possible cause" in their manual on why my unit is not working. Their manual says that the intake duct or discharge duct might be obstructed but they cant tell how I can access either. Ultimately, their solution is to "buy a new one" if your dehumidifier is not under warranty because they dont sell parts except for the bucket that collects water and they cant recommend how you might troubleshoot it. Pros: quiet; lowers humidity when its working Cons: useless customer service and you have to throw it away after about a year Will not buy again I bought one of these, CFM40, and used it less than 2years and it stopped working. I first noticed there was a problem when there was water all around it on the floor. I removed the back cover thinking the drain hole was plugged up but then noticed the coils had frozen over and also encased a small sensor/controls circuit board mounted behind the filter. Of course the circuit board was shorted out and rusted up. Called the company for a replacement board and was willing to pay for it but their reply was "we do not carry any internal parts". So I am dead in the water after less than 2 years of use. Of course warranty was only for 1 year. Product is great and runs well but will not last long. Will never but Soleus again. Great value I have used this unit for the past year non-stop. It is super quiet and efficient. It rids my entire cellar of dampness better than other units I have used in the past. Would highly recommend! Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier This item performed exactly as described in the write-up. It really takes the moisture out of the air. I recommend this unit. Soleus CFM-40 Dehumidifier We have used a number of dehumidifiers at our business which is in a double-wide trailer. Because of the nature of trailers, it can sometimes get very humid at different times of the year. This particular dehumidifier works very well yet the engineering design to empty the bucket once it is full of water, is quite poor. Due to the design of our facility, we are not able to use a drainage hose. The handle to pull the bucket out of its resting position is located at the front bottom as you can see from the picture... which means that it is very awkward to remove it without spilling and carrying it to be emtpied is also difficult. The machine functions exactly as it should and is VERY quiet. This item will receive 3+ stars due to the nature of the bucket when it is full. Again, the machine works well and is very quite... so if you could use a drainage hose, you will most likely find that it should receive 4 or 5 stars depending on your own experience. Quiet Dehumidifier This is the quietest dehumidifier I have ever heard run. The only drawback is the fan never shuts off. Has been working since July 09. It does a great job of drying my cellar. Great dehumidifier! I am very happy with this dehumidifier. I researched most of those available and chose this because of the reviews. It doesnt leak water, its dependable and very very quiet. Its easy to use. Just take it out of the box and plug it in. It only has a few buttons and you can tailor it to what you need. I have a small basement that has several rooms. (about 800sq feet) Although my basement is very dry, I was getting some mildew and by mid-summer the smell was getting strong. I keep my seasonal clothes on racks in the cellar and I didnt want them to be ruined. Ive been using this dehumidifier for about 2 months and it has totally taken the smell out. I have to empty the water 2x a day- in the morning when I get up and in the evening when I come home from work. I think if you have a very large basement, this isnt for you unless you hook it up to a drain. I do believe it would be worth it since this (so far) is a wonderful product. dehumidifier The Soleus is a great investment. The only fault with it is it doesnt have a hose connector. I had to modify it to accomidate a 3/8 in hose through the front of the canister. Basement Dehumidifier I use this dehumidifier in an un-airconditioned house in New England. The basement is VERY VERY humid and if I dont get the moisture out of the air everything down there molds. The dehumidifier works perfectly. It was easy to setup, and easy to connect to an external pump. It pulls about 4 gallons of water every 3 days. Its also very quiet and small. Im not sure why this dehumidifier is so small and saves so much power, but im glad i bought it, and I would buy again. DEHUNIDIFIER PURCHASE I WAS VERY SATISFIED WITH THE EASE WITH WHICH I FOUND THIS PRODUCT ON AMAZON. I DID PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT FROM ANOTHER VENDOR AT A MUCH HIGHER PRICE. I WAS QUITE PLEASED THAT THE HUMIDIFIER WAS AS GOOD AS STATED. VERY HAPPY TO FIND THE SECOND ONE AS SUCH A GOOD PRICE AS AMAZON. Super Quiet! My review is not going to be 100% comprehensive as Ive used this product for only one day. I will do another review after a few months. But for now, I wanted to comment that the unit super quiet. Cant even tell that its on at all. The only negative, so far, is that the water tank is very small so I need to empty it a couple of times a day. I am using the unit for my living area as it gets very damp in the summer. so far so good...a little hot though bought this item for my bedroom. found the background noise bearable, but in a closed room it will increase the temperature of the room between 3 and 6 degrees. Great dehumidifier Easy to install out of the box. The instructions might have offered some tips on hose sizes for US markets (everything was in metric units) but it was easy enough to figure out. The unit works great so far and started pulling water out of the air immediately. Works great. Two years and still like new. I am very happy with this product. It is simple to use and very quiet. I empty the water whenever I go down to the basement and then turn it back it on. It only takes a minute or so because I have a sink in the basement. My basement was very damp last summer because of a leak and I needed to empty it twice a day until the basement dried out. I didnt use it all winter. I use it now whenever its humid. It does a great job. The tank always fills up and turns itself off. Works Great! I bought this dehumidifier for my 500 sq ft basement. My basement was starting to get a humid/mildewing smell. After just 2 days of using this unit, the smell was gone and has not returned. The basement also seems much drier and more comfortable. The unit is pretty quiet when on the quietest setting. It does a great job removing moisture from the air. I would recommend this product to others. Soleus Dehumidifier So far, so good. Is the quietest/most cost effective of the seven different brands I have owned over time. The manufacturer should consider a larger container than the current largest, 40-pint, expecially for those that cannot use the continuous drain feature. Additionally, the manufacturer should consider employing a standard hose connector for continuous drain. Currently, you must use a 3/4 in pliable PVC hose. I highly recommend this product (I bought three), which would be that much better if the minor recommendations were made. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE The machine worked for only 4 months. Called and emailed that company, but have not get any response. Bad product and bad customer services. DO NOT BUY this machine. Mostly satisfied Not crazy about how hard the tray is to get out and how high the water is when the tray is full. But if I empty the tray more frequently, it is fine. It is a quiet dehumidifier. Quiet and small I purchased this unit over three years ago and it works just as good today as it did when it was new. Small, quiet, efficient in removing the moisture in the basement of my condo. Set on automatic and let it do its job. The only complaint is the small holding container -- real damp weather, the pan fills up and has to be emptied every few hours. When fill, it automatically shuts off. Overall, I would wholeheartedly recommend this dehumidifier for a moderate (1,100 sq. foot) basement. Incredible Dehumidifier I did a lot of research before I bought a dehumidifier, the reviews saved me from buying one that didnt work consistently, work quietly and easy to use. The Soleus is everything it says it is. I use it in my house in different rooms and I am pleased with the outcome. I was amazed how quickly the humidity was removed from my house. At night I place it in the bedroom and set it on quiet and it is quiet but still works great! Thanks to all who took the time to review this product and I would highly recommend this dehumidifier to anyone. The only issue I can think of is that the casters are really small and hard to move the unit using the casters. Did Not Work At All We purchased this Soleus dehumidifier only to find out that it had a faulty part and did not work at all. We only realized this after multiple calls to Soleus, by which time we had recycled the box. A call to Amazon was not particularly helpful and which would have charged us a significant "restocking fee." We had to ship it back to Soleus, at a cost of over $50 to get it repackaged. Still waiting on the replacement and hoping it works. Bought it based on everyone else's review It lives up to the expectations so far. It has a quiet mode that is not too loud at all. We put it in my infants room as a white noise that works well. It does heat up his room by 2-4 degrees though. If it runs 24/7, we empty it once a day. I have not yet hooked up the hose. Worked well as long as it was powered up I purchased the Soleus CFM40E to dehumidify our basement. It was a mid-range unit out of the three that were on display at our local national chain. After a year and a half of nearly continuous use (dehumidification set to mid-level two drops), I powered it off so it wouldnt need to run while my family was away for a week. Once we came back, I powered it up. The compressor was VERY loud and the compressor shut itself off after several seconds. I powered it back on again and it was fairly quiet - a slight hum coming from the compressor area - but it also shut the compressor off after a few seconds. It will no longer dehumidify, although the fan still runs and it acts as if it is working. Perhaps I shouldnt have powered it off! Soleusair only warrants this unit for one year. Ive replaced it with a different name-brand dehumidifier with a five year compressor warranty. Good for the price. This dehumidifier works well. I bought one for my daughter and me. The only problem is that it has a small water capture unit. I have to empty the water twice a day. Solusair 40 pint Dehumidifier The Solusair 40 pint dehumidifier is working well and as advertised. It is quiet and effectice for my apartment It is quiet even in the max mode of operation. Amazon was exceptional in that the first one ordered did not function as it was supposed to. Amazon immediately had it replaced with a new replacement, at no cost to myself, and the new one worked efficiently from the start. Soleus - Terrible Customer Service We purchased our Soleus through Amazon. After approximately 1 year the unit stopped working. I attempted to contact Soleus to see how I could get the unit repaired and could not get a response. This unit cannot be worked on locally as they cannot get parts. I would never buy anything from this company ever again. If I could rate them a negative 5 I would. I read a lot of good reviews about the product. I suspect their service dept. is busy posting positive reviews instead of answering customer service calls. A few upsides and many downsides Its true, this unit is the quietest dehumidifier youll find. And yes, its attractive enough that you wont be embarrassed to have it in your living space, though it still sticks out as some kind of appliance (unlike our Rabbit Air BioGS Purifier). But there are some serious flaws in engineering, reliability, and overall usefulness. Were on our second unit right now because the first one did not work... at all... on any settings combination. The unit we have now works, but is nearly as painful to use. Quiet/Med speeds and Dry/Med/Moist dryness settings do nothing at all, even in a bathroom that is clearly humid. A customer service rep told me High/Auto was the ONLY setting that works. And the unit has literally NEVER turned off or slept in Auto mode. We have an LG in our basement thats ugly and loud as an outboard motor, but it always works, never overflows, and has a spill-cover for emptying. The Soleus has overflowed onto our hardwood floors 5 times in the last 5 months--the unit simply didnt register that it was full and emptied gallons of water onto our wood floor while we were at work. The detachable float device to sense fullness is cheap and easily displaced, causing most of the overflows. And the lack of spill cover means that every time you empty, you can be sure youll be mopping up water as you detach, or moving on your way to empty, the bucket. Even moving the unit from place to place is enough to splash water from inside the unit all over your floor. Very very disappointing design and usability. The quiet and form factor make it one of the only choices for use in a living space, but be warned you need to babysit this appliance a lot. Quiet, efficient, and attractive Bought this to replace my old humidifier that sounded like an industrial lawnmower. The Soleus is so quiet that I had to look closely to make sure it was running (that this was on the high mode). The only thing I would change would be the bucket, which does not have handles to empty out (i.e., you have to be careful to get a good grip otherwise it could spill). All-in-all, a great buy though. SOOOOO QUIET Great purchase. This machine is easy to work. Really pulls moisture from the air well. Is almost absolutely quiet will it runs!! Sleek design. I have had one running in my basement for a few months now and all I can say is this is a great machine... It's Quiet I was looking to replace my existing dehumidifier because of how loud it was. I will make this simple, it works well. Its very quiet, and I dont even notice it running three feet away. Although its small it performs as well as the larger, very loud, costly, hot units. Best is that it running cool and operates at 306 watts not 1200 watts. That is a very good cost savings on the electric bill. If you want to waste your money buy this ... I dont want to given even 1 star, since there is no ZERO stars i had to give 1.. i bought this product based on the reviews at amazon and also i relied on the products from amazon, but this is a big disappointment for me, the product just died after 1 year Dehumidifers for Dummies Having just bought this, my second Soleus, Id like to share what I learned: The CFM-40 does *not* have a larger tank than the CFM-25, theyre the same size. The 40 has a faster moisture removal rate, I guess. The six liter or so tank has to be emptied more frequently. Duh! (slap my forehead) Its way quieter and lighter than the Haier units I had, one of which quit working btw. great lil' unit I have a home music studio with a few guitars and other equipment that need a good environment. the soleus air CFM-40 does a fine job and does it quietly .its easy to move around if you need to . I live very close to the Chesapeake Bay and humidity can sometimes be a problem , so Im glad I chose this unit . silent but not deadly... Unit is very quiet as advertised. I was a bit concenned at first use since it took over 24 for the bin to fill with water. Has seemed to get better over time. Probably still a little less powerfull than I had hoped for. Takes care of one room 12 by 20 feet (4 feet under ground) but not enough to handle 2 rooms which is what I was hoping for. Still a very nice unit for the money though. Excellent Product There are some pretty in-depth reviews on this site, so I wont waste my time on a lot of the details. Ive had this unit for just over a year, and it is an excellent product.....extremely quiet and efficient. The water tank is fairly small, but I need to commit to converting to the continuous drainage system yet. Well worth the money. Dehumidifier We were getting our old house redone and had to put all our furniture in the basement and garage. It was Spring and rainy. Needed a good dehumidifier that did not ice up. We ordered one of the Soleus and were so happy with its work we ordered a second and threw away our other defective ones. The machine is light, easy to tote, wheels work well too, does not ice up, runs quiet, dehumidifies, turns off when full. An excellent choice! Got it on Amazon, our best price too. Works well Ive had it for a couple months and it has worked great. At first it didnt seem to collect at any water, but I think I was too impatient and it might take just a little while to get started. Now it works like a champ. Worked 1 season, No Service support. The CFM-40E worked ok for one season. In a 600 Sq Ft Basement, it never got the humidity below 60%. One year later, no longer works at all. The 1.888 number NEVER picks up. The soleusair.com web site makes it clear they will ONLY deal with units under warranty - theres no help for regular service. To the Dump it goes. Worked well while it lasted...which wasn't very long. Ive owned 3 of these. The first one work well so I bought another one for another area of the house. I bought the second one in Winter and didnt use it until Spring when I realized it didnt work at all. I called Soleus and they said Id have to pay to send it to them since I had it over 30 days. It was about $40 to ship it and they sent me a new one.The third one worked well also for about 1 1/2 years and then stopped working...about the same time my first one stopped working. So I got about 3 years out of the first one and a year and a half out of the last one. Maybe this is a normal lifespan for a dehumidifier but I dont find it acceptable and wont be buying another Soleus. very pleased My basement was more humid than a rain forest. The air smelled wet, heavy, stinky and musty. Now, with this dehumidifier, the air feels much more dry and cool--more pleasant to breathe. I am not sneezing anymore in the basement, too. Needless to say, I am quite pleased with this dehumidifier. Now if I could just do something about these palm trees in my basement... Quiet and Reliable This unit is so much nicer than my old one. It lives up to the other high reviews it has received. Quiet operation and the bucket fills up rather quickly meaning it really pulls the moisture out. My only complaint is I wish the bucket had a better design-- when its full, you have to very carefully transport it to where your dumping out the water or else it tends to spill out. Other than that, a definite buy. Excellent Product This is the first dehumidifer I purchased. I love it and would definitely recommend it. It pulls the moisture out of the air quickly. It is very, very quiet. Planned Obsolescence or what? I bought this unit last summer and used it to knock the relative humidity down to 50% when things got too muggy in the home. I must say that the unit worked well at extracting water from the air and did so silently, a nice feature when sleeping. But alas! I took the unit out last night to help painted rooms dry faster and then checked the bucket this morning only to find it bone dry! Broken, a unit that now only consumes electricity and blows air around. I get so annoyed that companies can build refrigerators that last 15 years but this product dies after only one year. Im convinced this unit is manufactured as a throw away product in our disposable-obsessed culture. Buyer Beware! We purchased the Soleus CFM-40 E dehumidifier just over a year ago and it has stopped working and is out of warranty. My husband called Soleus and was told that it could be repaired at the rate of $45/hour, plus shipped to and from the repair center. That is unacceptable. A $200 dehumidifer should last more than 13 months. We are junking the machine and DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. Dead after one year The dehumidifier stopped working after one year and 15 days when it was out of warranty. They are not build to last. A Perfect Mate for R2 D2 When I saw 322 reviews for Soleus I immediately decided it must be the best. But I tend to be suspicious of products that cut silly corners such as not providing a threaded connection for a hose. So I started reading more carefully and then I discovered the guy with only 6 reviews might indeed be better. Following the herd isnt always the best way to go. But the Soleus seems like it must deserve at least 3 stars. The question is whether the Frigidaire deserves more attention. I suggest you read this, look carefully and the pros and cons of both and then decide. These people who complain about noise apparently havent tried my not so old Kenmore. I bought a Kenmore dehumidifier about 3 years ago and youd think they designed it to make noise. Sometimes it wined. Sometimes rattled. Sometimes it sounded like it was grinding metal. Thank heavens it finally died. So I started reading reviews of humidifiers here, at [...] and other places. I noticed that the Soleus has by far the most reviews on Amazon, dwarfing the Frigidaire in numbers. And the Soleus is consistently praised for being quiet. That would be very important if youre going to run a dehumidifier in your living space. But, in the basement where most people put their humidifiers they just need to be quiet enough so you dont hear an intrusive level of noise through the walls and floor. The Frigidaire meets that requirement easily. On low I cant hear it at all in our living space. But I also suspect that the Frigidaire moves a lot more air on low than the Soleus. The Soleus was criticized for taking a long time to dehumidify. In fact the Frigidaire moves so much air on the low setting that you could use it as an emergency hair dryer by sitting it up on a table using the handy fold down handle on its top. You could also set it next to your drip-dry rack and hurry up the drying of those things you dont want to put in the regular dryer. If you read these reviews of the Soleus carefully youll find reports that some people think getting one that works properly is sort of a crapshoot. And some said that if there is a problem the customer service for the Soleus isnt that great. I didnt read anything like that about the Frigidaire. I also tend to be suspicious of products that cut corners. So, when I read that the Soleus doesnt provide threads for connecting a hose onto the water output. Duh! I said to myself, "No way!" Seems like a no-brainer to me. But maybe not providing threads saves a half dollar on the production. Anyway, after reading all those little snipes I decided that, even though the Frigidaire only got 6 reviews to the Soleus 323 or whatever, Id look around and see what other sights were saying about the Frigidaire. I found one sight that rated it as the best of the humidifiers. What I didnt find was anyone saying theirs stopped working after a month and a half. So I went out and bought one for myself. After opening it up, screwing in the hose, plugging it in and pushing the ON" button, which took all of 3 minutes, I have come to the conclusion that if the Frigidaire just came with a video processor, a logic chip, voice capability and a means of propelling itself I might develop an affection for it. I might do so anyway. So far anyway Frigis breath is pleasant enough. See, Ive already given her a name. Shes actually quite beautiful as compared for example to R2 D2. I think R2 D2 would definitely have fallen in love at first sight. As for me? As much as Id like to just sit and look at Frigi, I am a married man and therefore feel obliged to limit such indulgences. quite but dead Bought two of these units two years ago. Worked well until the warranty expired. Then the first compressor quit, and six months later, the second unit quit. Dont buy these units based on the raves on quietness. My two units and those bought by others simply did not last. Not worth a penny I had this dehumidifier and it lasted one year exactly, nice warranty period, it lasted just days past the 1 year mark and then quit working. I thought it was a fluke, so I bought another one, and it didnt work straight out of the box. I called SoleusAir to see what to do about returning it, and have only once before been treated so completely like dirt. I will never buy this product again, or anything from this manufacturer. Incidentally, I bought mine from Quality Matters.com and they have some of the worst customer service Ive ever encountered, nearly incompetent, and wouldnt it be nice if they spoke English without sounding as though they are about to break into their native tongue? NOT for vacation cabin! This product would be rated 5 stars if not for the dummy "engineer" who causes the unit to run 24/7, even after humidity level has been reached. This is NOT GOOD for vacant vacation cabins! Also, if the power goes out and the owner is not there, the unit STAYS OFF! NOT GOOD! Otherwise if you are present to overcome above problems the Soleus is a great product. I read the reviews before I bought but somehow missed the continuous fan problem. Noticeable Difference in the House Weve had this dehumidifier for about a month now. Its been working fine all day, every day. We use it for the house, which is approximately 1200 square feet. It took a few experiments as far as where to place it, but it now sits near the air return on our A/C and it has been pulling lots of water out of the air. Im emptying it daily just out of habit, and Im emptying anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of a bucket of water every day. I have it running on high and its not much louder than a household fan. Very happy with the results so far. I have 2 humidity readers in the house at opposite ends, and the humidity has been staying at a very comfortable 43-49% range, which is great for an older condo in Florida. Its only been a month, but its been a very comfortable month thanks to this dehumidifier. Im glad I bought it and would definitely buy it again. nice and quiet I bought this dehumidifier to replace one that had gotten so loud that even though it was in the basement, could be heard through the whole house! The Soleus unit only make about as much sound as an average fan. It is in a whole different category as far as noise than any other dehumidifier I have ever owned. Some reviewers have said they had problems with it not working at all, but mine works great and I think I might know what their problem is. Im not sure the humidity level controls on the unit are at all accurate. I at first had it set at a level where it should go on and off based on about 50% humidity and no water was being collected. The thing I think confuses people is that even if the dehumidification isnt running, the fan still is - so you think it is running but not working. With it set to continuous operation (which my basement needs) it runs fine and pulls a lot of water. Dont be afraid to buy this unit - at least based on my experience. It works great and is VERY quiet!! Poor Quality My first unit ceased working within the first year. I had to send it back to the company for $30 shipping and they sent a new one. This worked for 1.5 years and it ceased function. Compressor is gone. I could buy 2 units for the price of the fix. I called the company and they said buy a new one. I have written and emailed the company but they will not communicate. Its quiet but thats about it. Dont waste your money!!! was great for the first year and a half... It worked great for the first year and a half. It isnt quite as effective at dehumidifying as some units, and its settings are a bit limited, but it is very quiet compared to other units Ive used. Unfortunately after a year and a half it pretty much stopped dehumidifying... the fan runs and it pulls a tiny bit of moisture out, but at a rate an order of magnitude slower than it used to... Reading other reviews, this is a fairly frequent occurrence. 4 stars if it is working, 1 star since it doesnt keep working. Good for a year or 2 but that's it My Soleus is less than 2 years old. The compressor locked up when I turned it on a couple days ago. Basically, that means its totaled. Searching the web, I find this has happened to many people. They last for a year, 2 or 3 and then they lock up. The one year warrenty is no help. Theyre a great unit when they work, but my old GE costs a lot less and lasted 2x as long. Im looking for new one but wont be considering a Soleus Bad Customer Service The unit is great, but if something goes wrong, forget it. I bought mine from Amazon. It arrived with a defect. I contacted Soleus via their website and got no reply. I left a msg on their voice mail (they are West Coast so dont open until late Central time). Never heard from them. Finally called in the middle of the day only to be told that I would have to pay to have it shipped back to them. Still waiting to hear from a supervisor and now looking for the Presidents name and address to write a letter of disgust. Is this really any way to run a company? This dehumidifier is very quiet I just received this dehumidifier and I cant believe how quiet it is! I have a Whirlpool at work and it is so loud I cant even talk over it. Well see how well it works in a few hours--it is very hot and humid today. Avoid this product and company The dehumidifier ceased to work properly after a month. The compressor would not turn on and it would not remove any water from the air. Attempts to contact customer support have gone unanswered. These items have a very high failure rate. AVOID purchasing any Soleus products. Horrible "Service" This machine comes with a 1-year warranty. If anything goes wrong with it you must ship it back to the factory at your expense, over $45. These are very troublesome machines. I have two of them. Once the year is up, you are on your own. Soleus does not sell repair parts for this unit, nor do they make them available to anyone else, including appliance parts or repair shops. No one should buy any of these units, period. That is, unless they are willing to write off their cost after one year. The product is nice and quiet, though. The company has no service and is extremely arrogant about it. You get what you pay for..or not. We purchased this product in late July of 2007. It was quiet and it did its job until it failed to function in October of 2008. So, one and one half summers and one and one half autumns. This is the second "Made in China" dehumidifier that we have had that has failed shortly out of warranty. The problem each time has been freeze-up. Both times "customer support" has been a "you bought the problem" experience. Well at least they are right about that, we did. Stopped working after just 4 months It worked well initially, but then just gave out after a few months. We only ran it a few days a week and always emptied it when full. I was very disappointed and would not recommend this to anyone. If for some reason you do decide to buy it, make sure you keep all the packaging and receipt so you can return it ! (which I failed to do) Very quiet, but low capacity and low efficiency Pros: Very quiet on low speed - about like a refrigerator. Cons: Low capacity, low efficiency, does not restart after power failure. The Soleus is advertised as a 40 pint per day dehumidifier, but the label on the back of the unit states this: EF = 1.3 Capacity: 20 pints/D at DB:80F RH:60% (40 pints/D at DB:86F RH:80%) It is hard for me to imagine a scenario where an indoor temperature of 86 degrees and 80% humidity would be acceptable, so the 20 pint per day rating at 80 degrees and 60% humidity seems more realistic. Capacity: I tested the Soleus unit at 76 degrees and 58% humidity - close to the conditions stated for 20 pints per day. The unit condensed water at the rate of 18.9 pints per day - close to the manufacturers rating. The same amount of water was produced on both high and low fan settings. Efficieny: EF is a measure of how many liters of moisture a dehumidifier will remove from the air for each kilowatt-hour of electricity used. Higher numbers are better. The Soleus unit used 295 watts during the test which works out to an EF of 1.25 - close to the manufacturers rating. The electricity used was the same for both high and low fan settings. Comparision: I also own a Fedders model A7DH45B2A dehumidifier which is advertized as a 45 pint per day unit and is Energy Star qualified. Under similar test conditions, the Fedders unit condensed 43.5 pints per day at an EF of 1.75. Conclusions: When comparing to other brands, I would think of the Soleus unit as a 20 pint per day dehumidifier of relatively low efficiency. Under similar test conditions, the Soleus unit could condense less that half as much moisture as the Fedders, and it used 40% more electricity for each liter of moisture condensed. The unit works equally well at either the high or low fan settings, but it is quieter on low, so that is the best choice. The lower capacity of the Soleus unit (20 pints per day) means it might not be adequate to dehumidify larger areas or very damp rooms. The lower efficiency of the Soleus unit translates into a higher electric bill to operate it. When operated continuously, it would use 212 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month, which would cost $21.20 at 10 cents per kilowatt-hour. A unit with the same capacity and the efficiency of the Fedders unit would cost only $15.14 per month. Power failure: The Soleus unit does not restart automatically after a power failure. So, it would not be useful for an unattended application. Despite its flaws, the quiet operation of the Soleus unit makes it suitable for use in occupied rooms, whereas the Fedders unit is noisy enough to be annoying, even on low speed. For that reason, I am primarily using the Soleus unit rather than the Fedders. Would not purchase again Definitely would not purchase this product again. The flimsy on/off switch apparatus fell off after about 6 months of occasional use. I was able to reinsert it which rendered the unit usable for awhile. My bad for not calling customer service at that initial breaking point, although after reading the other reviews it appears they would have sent a used unit to replace mine. No thanks. I called customer service to locate a repair facility- there are none. You must ship it back at your expense. My unit was 10 days out of the 1 year warranty. They will not make an exception and replace the unit. I ask to speak to the customer service manager. Im told shes out to lunch and will call me after lunch. Still waiting for Cheryls call- a week later. Returned it within 3 days... This thing is a piece of junk. I shouldve known I bought the wrong product from the very second I opened the box and noticed a little flyer on top saying "STOP - Do not return this product to the store. Please contact us if you have any problems..." Typical Amazon, the merchandise arrived cracked (the cord hook was broken off), but that was minor. I plugged the unit in and, as advertised, it was extremely quiet. For anyone that needs an expensive white-noise generator, this is your product. If you need to dehumidy a room, however, find yourself another dehumidifier. Im sure you could buy something else for $20 that works better than this overpriced piece of garbage. Anyway, I let it run and tried multiple settings for two straight days and not a single drop of water in the bucket. After reading more online, multiple people have had this problem, so its not an isolated incident. I called Soleus and they apparently dont answer their phone, so I decided to not waste any more time and just returned it to Amazon. Im still waiting for my credit though. Ill never buy a Soleus product again. For $200, the thing should not only dehumidify, but it should make me a sandwich while doing it. It doesnt even do the former. coming up on one year I bought this unit in July, 2008. It has run continuously in my basement since then. It is so quiet that we have to go downstairs to make sure it is on...unlike any other dehumidifier we have put down there. It works great! My only negative is that they should make the continuous hose option much easier to use/do and should provide a hose or sell it as an option so you dont have to go searching in a home improvement store for the right one. Otherwise, I would buy it again. Quiet!! I bought the Soleus (CRM-40 E)a couple of weeks ago. I read the reviews on Amazon prior to doing so and so far have found them accurate. Ive had dehumidifiers for years and this one is by far the quietest Ive ever had. No more than having a small fan in the room. You cant even hear the compressor running. Seems to do a good job of taking humidity out of the air. Very light and easy to move. I dont know how it will hold up, but thus far Im very satisfied. Two small complaints. It would be nice it the fan turned off when the compressor wasnt running. Would save some energy, but this is already a very efficient unit. The other was they attached a big feature sticker on the front of the unit that has proved nearly impossible to remove. Dont know what they were thinking with that! All in all Id buy again. Dehumidifier Soleus Air CFM-40 E The Soleus Air dehumidifier is extremely quiet; however, the amount of moisture pulled from the air is not nearly the amount the previous very noisy models traditionally found in Sears/Lowes/HomeDepot. After getting it set up and running for a week, I noted in the Users Manual that the rated capacity is at 80 degrees and goes down as the temp goes down - so if your basement is much cooler, that capacity goes down. Excellent product So far so good! This product has worked like a charm, but we have only had it for two months. After two weeks, so far so good At standard delivery from Ace Digital, Soleus CFM-40 arrived in several days in perfect condition, well packaged. Loud enough so you dont want to sleep in the same room with it, even in quiet mode. I pour out several quarts of water each day from a 780 sq ft Northern California house. Its a good looking unit, easy to handle, and out of the way. Nice, light and quiet We bought this dehumidifier for our basement. It really helps reducing the humidity there. Now its no longer damp and smelly. We really like it because its lightweight and its very quiet. It doesnt heat up the place either. If only it has something to show the current humidity level of the room, it would be perfect. Nice and quiet, small capacity I use it to dehumidify my basement. The unit is extremely quiet, however, the water bucket is relatively small, which requires frequent emptying. Overall, I am happy with the unit. Soleus Air 40 Pint Dehmidifier - no problems Use: 1 small bedroom in San Francisco x 1 year. Before buying the dehumidifier we had water/condensation literally trickling down the walls. Cabinets, closets, and belongings became mildewed. Then we bought the 40 pint unit. We run the machine almost everyday from 9am to 10pm. After one year, it is still functioning, and preventing mildew. I dont look at the elec bills that closely, I cant tell you what it costs to run it. I run it at the top speed and still the noise is inoffensive. Note: I didnt take temp or humidity baseline measurements when we first bought it. But Ive used a temp and humidity monitor for approx 1 month during our current rainy season (Feb). Without ever running the machine the humidity in the bedroom would prob. be around 70-75% on average. During the rainy season, its about 67% humidity in our bedroom in the am when we wake up. I let the machine run all day until 10PM. At 10PM/bedtime when I turn it off its about 40% humidity. The room is much more comfortable, the sheets feel dry, and the air is noticeably drier and warmer. When we wake in the am there isnt any condensation running down the wall. Without the machine, I bet we would average 75% humidity overall. Now that we are averaging 40-45% there arent any visible mildew problems. Id buy another one for sure. Compressor became very "weak" at the 4 month mark Looks like the compressor is on its way out already. Based on other 1-star reviews, it is not even worth my time (and shipping cost) to send this back to Soleus in California. Its too bad, since it was a quiet unit. It is struggling to dehumidify my home office, where I just steam cleaned the carpet. It is 70F, ambient. excellent dehumidifier our Soleus Air CFM-40 arrived while were on vacation. we left a borrowed dehuidifier running while we were away. we had slept with the borrowed unit for almost a week and I was growing tired of the noise. all I can say is Wow! when we turned the Soleus on. it was like it wasnt there. they should put QUIET in the model name. it has been running for two weeks now and absolutely no complaints, disappointments, or surprises. Quiet, powerful, effective. I have had the Soleus Air CFM-40 for just over 6 months, and its been great- I am very pleased. When I first got the unit (summertime), it was very damp and humid in my basement, and the dehumidifier would fill up every 12 hours. Each time it did, it shut off and a red light went on, just as it should. After a few weeks, it was noticeably drier, and it would fill up every 24 hours. Now, in the winter, it is pretty dry, so, predictably, it does not fill up at all. I am very impressed by the excellent performance of this fairly small unit. Well worth the price for a small to medium sized room. Highly recommended. Mostly very satisfied, but It really is quiet and does an excellent job of keeping the humidity at an even level. Price and value are certainly there with one big complaint. We leave it running in a condo in Florida when we go back home. If the electricity is interrupted for only a minute or so for ANY reason the unit shuts down and the power button has to be pressed "ON" and the humidity and fan speed levels have to be reset. This is a major problem as we may be gone for months and need it running especially in the high humidity summer months when we arent there. Thats the only complaint. Died in less than a year I bought one less than a year and now it collects very little water even when I set it at high. I used to empty it every other day now even after a week it has less than an inch. NO GOOD. I posted this in the 25 pint model as well because I think people should know about this. Im really disappointed. BAD!!! Right tool for the job. I did quite a bit of research to find the right dehumidifier. Small enough to be portable yet still has a large capacity. Works like a charm! Good while it last This product works great when it worked. Mine stopped working with less than a years non-intensive use. But it seems every other dehumidifiers have the similar problem of breaking down after one years use. I would love to have one that is reliable for at least two years. But dont know which brand. Removes Condensation My windows got a lot of condensation before AND after i remodeled so my contractor said i should get a dehumidifier. Read amazon reviews & bought this one, looked better than the other dehumidifiers i saw, & its not too heavy. its EXTREMELY quiet even on the highest setting, i really cant hear it at all if im not a couple of feet from it. would be easy to sleep next to but i keep it in my living room because it seems that i get lots less condensation when i use it. its crazy how much water it takes out of the air, about 10 pints in 6 hours @ my house. never knew air had that much water in it. does what it says & very easy/convenient to clean/empty Quiet and just works This unit is very quiet; I can leave it running while I watch TV with minimal bother. It is pretty efficient -- it uses around 200 Watts and can take my 1050 sq ft house from 50% to 40% humidity in about 8 hours. It can run for about a day at 50% humidity before the water bucket fills up. I havent had any problem with water spilling anywhere. Waste of Money! This thing doesnt work. I have had it running for a week now and not one drop of water in the bucket! Water on my floor but not in the bucket. Save your time and money. soleus air stopped working after a couple of months It stopped working after a couple of months. Tried turning it on and off, plugging it in and out... occasionally these "restarts" worked but then they stopped working all together. The unit was over $200 and just worked a few months. Removes Moisture Quickly This is a great product - had it about a month. Our windows would be soaked every morning, needing to be towel dried. From the first night we used this, windows have been either dry or have had just a little condensation. Removes moisture really well. The only negative (and reason for not giving 5 stars) is that it isnt quite as portable as I had expected -- it has casters, not wheels, which work well on hardwood flrs, but are totally ineffective on any type of carpeting. I find it awkward to lift and carry over carpeted rooms, and then drag over hardwd flrs. We need a second one and were considering the 25pt one thinking it would be lighter/smaller, but it is only about 3 lbs lighter, is the exact same dimensions, and costs only $8-$10 less! So, think well be buying another 40pt before the rainy spring begins. Hoping our unit doesnt meet the premature death that some posters have encountered. Worth it's weight in gold! This thing is so quiet you hardly know its running. We are currently living in a 26ft travel trailer while our house is being remodeled. We started having a problem with moisture as soon as the weather got cold because we had to keep the windows closed and the heater on. Every morning we had to take a towel and dry off the windows and during the day you couldnt even see out because the windows were so fogged up (2 adults and 2 big dogs release a lot of carbon dioxide). We even had mold growing around the door frames because we didnt notice the moisture building up there. After just one night, we could see a difference. We woke up to clean, DRY windows and dumped several cups of water out of the tank. Space is at a premium in here and not only is the Soleusair quiet it doesnt take up that much room. Its also pretty stable-the dogs havent tipped it over yet! Im very happy with my purchase! Very Pleased Product more than meets expectations. Smaller than I had thought; very quiet; efficient; perfect. Would have liked it to have been cheaper! Arrived in a week. Only disappointment: it didnt come with exit hose and having to go out to buy one of proper dimension was a pain. How did we live without it? I dont know how Soleus compares to other dehumidifiers, but thus far (which hasnt been long), this one is working great for us in an apartment that gets a lot of moisture build-up on windows and through the walls due to ocean proximity (and some structural issues, especially with the windows). Its quiet, too, and easy to move from room to room. The water container is also easy to empty. Quietest Dehumidifier ever! My family (currently 6 of us) lives in a 32 ft travel trailer while we are working on building our house. It can get to be some cramped quarters in there with a lot of water vapor- especially during the winter time. When I purchased this I just didnt want anything terribly loud. Even on full, the thing is fairly quiet and 2 people can easily talk without having to raise their voices in the slightest. On silent mode- its quieter than a house fridge. Ive had it running for about 3 weeks, near continuously, and I hardly notice it running, any increase temperature is negligible, and it keeps condensation down fantastically. All this and the fact that it reminds me of an R2D2 unit. I highly recommend. :) Quiet and Reliable This is the second Soleus that I have purchased this year. They work well and are extremely quiet. Each unit is in a different house - both are in basements, one wet, one dry. The units work well in both environments. GREAT THE FIRST WEEK...THEN QUIT! We were delighted from the start with this machine... very quiet, did a great job for the first week and then stopped working. The fan runs but it has pulled no water for over 24 hours despite trying every trouble shooting point. Weve ordered a replacement through Amazon... well see if its any better. BEWARE, this seems to be a hit or miss product... but great when it works. I think it works great.... We live in Florida and bought this product because the apartment we recently rented has a crazy moisture problem. The apartment is so air tight that there is no airflow and we found out that we had a leak which caused a lot of condensation on the windows and a very musty smell. From the very first time we used it, we loved it. It cleared up the sliding glass door and the windows within 20 min. We use it a little everday and the musty smell is finally going away!!! Our place is about 1000 sq. and we have to move it if we want it to work in other rooms, but we dont mind good unit, great price The Soleus Air CFM-40 is quiet, efficient and pretty portable. We have used it for a month or two and it does just what we wanted, reduces moisture in a basement room to reduce mildew. I reccomend the unit as a good buy. Quiet as amouse Replaced a Sears dehumidifier in the basement. Its in a basement "family room" where we sometimes watch movies, listen to music, etc. It is so quiet in its "quiet" mode that it cant be heard! Works reasonably well as adehumidifier as well and no reliability issues after about 6 months of nearly continuous use. No Problems so far. AND SOOOO QUIET!!! I bought this after reading several reviews. More $ than I wanted to spend but well worth it! I was looking for a quiet dehumidifier and this is about the only one I could find that actually had decible ratings. VERY QUIET!! I have this placed in our master bathroom. If we had an exhaust fan that ran this quiet we wouldnt need it. But, instead of ripping out my ceiling and putting in something quieter I bought this. It runs on whisper mode (if you want it to run longer and quieter) and you barely notice its there. This is not high pitched (cause that would drive me nuts, since I get migraines) and opperates very well. I would have to say this one of the most efficient and quiet dehumidifiers that Ive ever purchased. It keeps our bathroom dry (which will keep away the mold). I only run it at night when we get home from work and turn it off when I leave for work in the morning. I purchased this in November and its been over a month of use so far. A Quiet Dehumidifier I bought this model of dehumidifier because it was reputed to be very quiet. It is indeed very quiet. It also dehumidifies (I use it in the basement during the summer) - but I have nothing to compare it with. I also dont know if it stops dehumidifying when it reaches the desired humidity setting, because the fan keeps going and the same lights on the panel stay lit. we are so happy with this dehumidifier!! I must say, I was a bit nervous to buy a dehumidifier. We live in San Francisco...nobody ever said it was that damp there! Well, it seems there are microclimates here, and we are in a damp one. Anyway, though It seemed like a hefty price tag to pay for my need to get rid of the "moldy, stale" air in our downstairs bedrooms and two baths, I am soooo glad we did. The unit worked the moment it came out of the box. Its easy to move around...just tilt and roll on floor, so you can put it anywhere you want. I wouldnt say the quiet mode is "whisper" quiet...it sounds like an airconditioner, but it is a smooth sound, and soon turns into background noise that is almost unnoticeable. It can fill up...the whole 40 pints...in less than one day! The result? a clean smelling room, that has healthy air with no mold spores. Do yourself a favor and buy the best...so far it seems worth the money. Only 3 Humidity Level Presets 50% - 60% - 70% (Needs 40%) Machine is quiet and does the job it was intended to do. I could have really loved this unit. However, it has only three humidity presets 70%-60%-50%. Being experienced in mold remediation and having mold allergies myself I can tell you that the target humidity should be 40%. My last unit which recently died allowed me to adjust the hemastat in 5% increments from 30%-70%. The 40% humidity also is helpful if you have arthritis (which I do). I worked in the Custom Home Building business for years and also managed rental properties and Mold 101 is to reduce mold growth, humidity should not be over 40%. Forget half of what you read on the Internet, I was certified in Mold Remediation so this 50% isnt correct. Some websites say 30-50% but the truth is 30%-45% is max. With no higher than 40% being the target. Great while it lasted My first Soleus dehumidifier worked fine for nine months, then stopped working. The motor ran, but it no longer pulled any water out of the air. Since it was still under warranty, I got another one at no cost. The second one worked fine for eight months, then stopped working. Same problem: motor runs, but doesnt dehumidify. Since the one-year warranty is now up, Ill have to buy a new dehumidifier. Im not really convinced that getting a third Soleus is worth the money. Call me old fashioned, but I expect my appliances to last for more than a year or two -- and certainly for more than a few months. Good purchase I bought this product couple of weeks ago. So far its working great without any problem... GREAT JOB!! I bought 2 of these to take the moisture out of the air in our new home. Our hardwood flooring was starting to "cup" and the installer recommended putting in dehumidifiers to lessen the moisture content in the air and the wood. I received these right away (great service from Amazon!) and they have worked perfectly since they came out of the box. They are quiet and attractive and are really doing the job. When it has rained and the air moisture rises, I have had to empty the tanks much more frequently. A sign that they are really effective! Emptying the tanks is a breeze, they are not very heavy and as soon as you slip them back in, the unit automatically starts up again. Ive had them about a month now and am very pleased with the purchase. Excellent Soleus Dehumidifier, Quiet and efficient Purchased this Soleus CFM-40 after putting up with an old GE unit that was loud and clunky. When the Soleus arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the sleek design and quiet operation. Its used in our basement office space where I often do conference calls, so the simple fan (very low noise) continues to be a delight. The 40-pint tank does fill quickly, but I dont mind the empty routine each morning. The adjustable fan output allows directed airflow up and away. Theres a convenient flip-up handle for carrying and its not too heavy to move around. We bought the unit back in August 2008 and waited until now (Nov.2008) to post this review... this dehumidifier works perfectly, and we would buy another if ever the need arose. Nice product Im not around the unit too much as it sits in the basement, but when i am it does seem a lot quieter than the older one that i was using (GE brand i think). I am so pleased with this Soleus Dehumidifier This is my first dehumidifier and I really like this one. Being a woman, it is a little heavy for me to carry from one room to another, but it works great!! I have owned it about a month now and it is working just fine. Thank you Amazon.com!! Works great so far! I havent had this unit for very long, so I cant comment on the durability issue some people have had. So far, this unit is working exactly as it should. The "quiet" mode is still a bit loud for use in a bedroom, but overall this unit is a bargin for the price. Quiet, but does NOT work so great The compressor will only run in "continuous mode." Preset humidity levels only cause the fan to blow. The dehumidifier will, at its peak, get the humidity level in my ~200 sqf, 70 F, finished basement down to 53 percent. I was hoping for better. Other than that, it IS relatively quiet as far as dehumidifiers go. Excellent product I purchased this product in October after noticing my basement was quite himid and stuffy. The dehumidifier has worked non-stop, quietly and efficiently, and the basement is noticably drier. I anticipate less use over the winter and will ultimately utilize the drain hole to keep from emtpying the unit manually. So far, I would recommend this product without qualification. Works well. Howdy from Jackson Hole! I remodeled a house, and made it very tight. Consequently, I got a lot of condensation and mold, ruining paint and varnish around the windows. After repainting, the Soleus did the job. Im ordering my 2nd Soleus air CFM-40. This first lasted a year. I dont mind, as I expected this. After all, its a small unit doing a BIG job. Please note: -It was quiet throughout its life. -It kept our 850 sq. foot house dry. -People have complained about all brands of dehumidifier they run all the time. The units have to. They need to keep sampling air, and keep it moving. Ah well. -I remember one gentleman was unhappy with this unit as his son had a medical condition which needed low humidity, and the Soleus would only adjust to a certain percentage and go no lower. He was wrong. The unit has a "Continuous" setting also, which keeps its little drive running 24 hours a day to remove all the humidity it can. Thats where I set it during the winter. Happy Trails! Honest Review Just got the unit. Its nice looking, easy to move/operate and its pretty quiet. You can watch TV in the same room while this runs and it wont bother you. But it doesnt remove any water, not 1 drop. I have had it running in a basement that recently had some water damage. Its still pretty damp. I was borrowing a friends unit that is large, old and very loud; that one sucked gallons of water out. This one draws out nothing at all after a few days of operation. Maybe this is a defective unit. Good product, but a few little annoyances The product looks great, and is very quiet. Thats wonderful, but there are two small annoyances. Im taking one star off for this two small failings. First, they put a big advertising sticker listing various features on the front, and it cannot be removed with a lot of effort. The sticker de-laminates and becomes a sticky mess once you try. Second, the unit includes a handy cord minder on the rear, but it immediately broke. Basically, its a nice little holder for the power cord, with a snap to hold it shut. The snap broke the first time I tried to use it. Quiet and Effective After reading all the negative reviews about this product, I was really reluctant to purchase it, except that the competition sounded no better. We are living in our RV in wet and rainy western Washington while having our home built. We needed something quiet that was able to operate at low temperatures and be reasonably portable. This one fits the bill on all counts. It is whisper quiet, easy to move around, and is removing about a gallon of water from the air every day. We have only owned it for a month, so I cannot speak to reliability, but so far it has met all expectations. In fact, we just bought a second unit for the POD that is holding our household goods. Two thumbs up. Love this dehumidifier- works like a champ After several weeks of research we settled on this one. The negative Amazon reviews made me a bit nervous, but there were so many positive reviews we took a chance. I couldnt find any other brand with as many user reviews. Sounds like there are some bad units, which might be the luck of the draw. We got this dehumidifier 2 months ago and its like living in a different house. We went from 80% humidity to 49% in the main living area in about 48 hours, set on the continuous/high setting. We keep it in our bedroom, running on the quiet mode now that the humidity is under control, and its about as loud as a normal fan. We live in Southeast Alaska where it rains CONSTANTLY so we were having mildew and mold issues. This unit takes so much moisture out of the air it was filling the collection tank every 24 hours. We have a 1500 sf, single level home, and this 40pt unit is powerful enough to work on the entire house. We did install the drain hose this weekend (purchased at home depot - 7/8" x 5/8" x 10 for about $8) and ran the hose down through the floor and into a crawlspace drain. I love this unit and cant remember how we lived without it. The mildew is gone, the moisture in the windows is gone, the house smells cleaner and fresher, and I wouldnt be surprised to see our heating bill go down since the air inside is dryer and warmer. It hasnt effected our electricity usage noticeably, even though we run it constantly. Highly recommended. It does its job consistently Its amazingly quiet Its not unsightly its portable, although the casters are somewhat useless. Its so light you can just carry instead of rolling it. Has 3 humidity settings and 3 power settings (low, high and quiet) You can hook up a drain hose instead of emptying the collection bin every day The cost to run it is less than the cost of heating the cold, wet air Does not have auto-restart in case of power outage Thats the only down-side I could see for most users who would put this in their basement in other climates. And with free shipping, you cant beat Amazons price. Costco quit selling their model, WalMart and HomeDepot were constantly out of stock (with questionable models, I was unable to find many user reviews for what they do carry) and Fred Meyer didnt carry them. Consumer Reports reviewed several but I dont recall Soleus being on the list this year.) This unit is working perfectly!! Ive had this dehumidifier for about 6 weeks now. It has been better than I expected. Save yourself some time researching the other brands and just buy a Soleus. Not sure about the longevity of the item due to not having it long, but so far, Im very happy! Returned to Vendor I wanted to like this unit, but alas, it was returned to Amazon. Here is why: It seems the life of todays dehumidifiers has been drastically shortened since manufacturing of these units all went to China. I have owned 3 dehumidifiers over a long span of time. The first one ran for about 15 years and I got this used from my parents, so I dont know how long it ran in total. The second one ran for 10-12 years and the last one (the first I owned not made in the USA) ran to just out of warranty, or about 26 months. Since repairs were prohibitive, I started searching for a new unit. I was unable to find a single unit still made in America. With that done and overwith, I narrowd my search to the Soleus CFM-40, in part, due to the usually spot-on reviews in Amazon. The unit arrived OK and performed very quietly on the continuous cycle as the owners manual recommends you begin using at first. When the area was down to its intended humidity (50%) level, one that was maintained for years with previous dehumidifiers, I selected that humidity level on the controls of the Soleus for it to maintain automatically. While the fan ran, it stays on constantly - an annoying feature not found in most dehumidifiers, the compressor never cycled on and the humidity level rose 15% past the setting selected to 65% over several days. No matter where I set the auto-humidity level - the compressor never came on. I called the Soleus 800 number, where I reached an associate that must have gotten bad sushi or got up on the wrong side of the bed to stagger into work for Soleus USAs 9AM starting time, my 12PM, when I was first able to make contact with them for the day. I told her that the unit would not cycle the compressor unless continuous was selected. That must have triggerd her ire as no one in her world is supposed to be able to detect a Soleus compressor cycle. Our conversation ended with her abruptly ending the conversation and hanging up on me. Here is a customer service person that knows how to put the cuss in customer service... Thanks to Amazon, a prompt and efficient return was accomplished, but no more Soleus products for me, ever. So, Im back to the somewhat noisy, but properly functioning Sears Kenmore - the brand that once made dehumidifiers that lasted generations, but also made my last unit that chunked after 26 months... Worked great for 2 months... This dehumidifier worked great for a little over two months. It ran mostly on continuous mode with great results. Then ice built up on back where the filter is, and it stopped dehumidifying. Im in the process now of contacting Soleus about its warranty. I will update this post when this issue is resolved. good but certainly not great This is a pretty good little DH. It is small which enables you to carry with ease to different rooms and is very quiet as opposed to my older Kenmore that I had for five years. It seems to do the job but at a slower rate that my Kenmore had. I have noticed that the filter collects alot of things quicker than the Kenmore and I have to clean it more often. Maybe that is good or bad? I do like that the Kenmore sucked the wetness out of towels and the floor within an hour. Soleus takes a bit longer and I do not like that it does not have a 3 hour on/off energy star shutoff like the Kenmore had. If you dont hit power, the fan will always run. I am also worried that if it breaks I will have to spend $ to send it back on the other coast. Works fine so far This product has done a good job drying out my damp basement. It has plenty of settings to keep the humidity as you want it and the quiet setting is a nice feature. Quiet and Efficient I purchased this unit to replace an old noisy dehumidifier. I cant believe how quiet it is running! It has run continuously since i plugged it in, no more sweaty windows! I dump the tank twice a day, it does have a port for continuous flow tube, but that needs to be purchased separately, but I dont mind the dumping. Quiet! Soleus CFM-40 is QUIET and effective. My only reservation is the relatively small tank capacity which seems to fill up so quickly (because its so effective!). Quiete and functional Because we were disappointed with a humidifier we bought at a major retailer, I went to amazon.com and read the reviews. The design is very intelligent and functional, and let me emphasize it is very quiet. Works Very Well...quiet...basement is dry Working well for 2 months now. Very quiet operation and basement has no smell like most basements around here do. Only reason for withholding one star is if power does go out, you have to turn it back on when power is restored. Hooking up 5/8 hose was easy with a hose clamp. Emptying the tank twice a day was becoming a chore. A humidity meter would be nice, but I can get one fairly cheaply. If it keeps working for a couple a years, Ill be happy. The big basement dehumidifiers are $1200-$1500, so this is a deal. Quiet with good drain Very quiet. Cant tell yet how well it is keeping basement low in humidity. Excellent drain since connecting a hose to drain direct to sink prevents any water from sitting in the container. Avoids fungus growth and need to clean water container. Very Pleased I purchased the Soleus Air CFM_40 about a month ago. The machine does everything it is supposed to. Be aware that frequent emptying of the water tank is necessary, like every other day. Very plased with Soleus Dehumidifier After a month long search of appliance stores and the internet I finally took a chance on the Soleus. Ive had it for a month now and I believe that I made the right choice. I bought it because it had a lower Amp rating and was supposed to be much quieter than most of its competition. I hope I havent jinksed my self by being so positive with my review. Time will tell. Soleus is quiet and efficient so far After reading many reviews on various dehumidifiers on Amazon and other places, Soleus was the ONLY dehumidifier I considered. In just a few weeks, it has removed gallons of water from the basement. Ive been emptying the bucket daily to ensure that it is still working. If it does fail, I want to make sure I know about it right away. An added bonus of the Soeus is that it helps to dry laundry that I hang in the basement! The warm air blows out the top of the unit and I can direct the vent towards the clothes that I want to dry soonest. Great Product I absolutely love this product. I never realized how much humidity I had in my air until I got this. I get a tub of water out at least once a day. It is remarkable how much of a difference that it makes in the air quality in your home. I would recommend this product to anyone. We love it in our home!!! dehumidifier Works well at the one month point. Durability unknown.Soleus Air CFM-40E Dehumidifier - 40 Pint Works very well. Its silent in the low mode and is very effective. Youll have to empty the resevoir each day though. A larger 80-pint would be nice. Soleus dehumidifier Ive owed many dehumidifiers over the years. This one, by far, is the quietest. Also, its relatively light and easy to transport. Pulls alot of water out of the air, too. Works beautifully. Good Product; Quiet Machine I have been pleased with this dehumidifier. It is rather quiet and seems to operate efficiently. I have not yet hooked up a tube to drain the water into the sump pump but emptying the pan does not seem too much a bother either. I would recommend this product. Very quiet Very quiet, would have been 5 stars but it uses a different type of hose. IT HAS IT ALL THE UNIT HAS IT ALL.I HAVE HAD A FEW OTHERS AND THIS ONE TOPS THEM ALL. A NICE SIZE UNIT THAT DOES A GREAT JOB. Defective Batch I received my first unit on 9/30/2008. It worked great for a few days; it ran quietly and effectively dehumidified the air. It worked so well that the drainage tank had to be emptied up to 3 times a day. Then randomly, in less than a week, the unit stopped working. Amazons great customer support agreed to send out a replacement unit on 10/9/2008. I received the replacement the following day, on 10/10/2008, and it did not work either. During the 2.5 days that I continuously ran the unit, it has not dehumidified the surrounding air. This is unacceptable. It rained outside while the unit was running and there was also the humid air from the showers that I had taken during this time period. This replacement unit has not collected a single drop of water in its tank! I am disappointed in this product. It is expensive and it does not serve its purpose. soleus air cfm-40 E 40-pint dehumidifer The product works well. The only thing that I thought was odd was the fact that it blew warm air. The last one I bought was in 1990 so it was quite different. Don't invest in a bad stock! I first tried out a few noisy dehumidifiers from local stores, which went back due to high noise level. After reading and rereading the Soleus reviews, balancing the good and the ugly, I was gambling on "getting lucky." Purchased the Soleus 40 pint dehumidifier from Amazon in July 2008 for $216.00. Up until a few days ago, I thought I got lucky - heck, a full water bucket daily was proof of its effectiveness since I sure couldnt hear the slightest sound it made as close as 2 ft. away from the device. That all changed a few days ago. I noticed the humidity reading in my upstairs rising, yet weather conditions have been somewhat dry lately in the Chicago area. Well, after 2 days not seeing the red indicator light, I discovered the bucket had only an inch of water and the basement really seemed damp. That explained the higher humidity reading. A day later, the water remains the same. Its running, but not collecting moisture. Sound familiar? Now the nightmare of dealing with Soleus. The timing of this crash couldnt come at a worse time. It feels like a bad stock. Great Product, Easy to Use, good electrical savings, quiet I purchased this dehmidifier and I am VERY pleased with the product so far. It does not use much electricity, it is not noisy (we have one off our main living room and it can barely be heard and it is not in quiet mode. The first night it was on it took more than 1 full can of water out of the air and we are very impressed. We are ordering 2 more just like it! aswesome product I have been using this product for 1 1/2 years. I was a little leary at first because of some of the negative reviews. I have a basement apartment and wasnt sure how well it would work. It has worked better than I expected. During the wet season I have to empty it daily. That isnt a big deal since the reservoir is not as heavy or awkward to pull out as my old klunker was. Having a front reservoir is very helpful. It also doesnt put out as much heat as my old one. I generally keep it on high during the wet season. It is very quiet. We lost the air conditioning for a few weeks I ended up sleeping in the living room where the unit is. It never bothered my sleep. When I watch tv I never have to turn it down or off, unlike my air purifier. The unit is nice looking compared to my old klunker. I am very please with it. As far as not turning back on after a power outage it isnt a big issue. With the power coming back on you wouldnt want everything to come back on at the same time. Reb My new BFF... I bought this because my basement seems unusually humid this year, and I have books, furniture, and clothing stored down there. This unit works so well! It is quiet and very powerful. I am very happy with my purchase. Mostly positive experience with dehumidifier Pros: It is quiet and easy to carry. It does a proficient job of removing moisture from a decent sized room. The set up and operation is very easy. Cons: Exhaust air is generally at 76 degrees. With all the rain and humidity weve had this summer, with the temps still cool, this resulted in heating up the room to remove the moisture. Water pan is a little ackward to remove. Better than expected I had a Whirlpool for almost two years before it went low on coolant and started freezing up. Took a chance on the CFM-40 and was pleasantly surprised. By comparison its nearly silent-- cant even hear the compressor, just a gentle whoosh of the fan even on high. Its also much smaller and yet it collects more water per hour. The only suggestion is that it be easier to attach a drain hose. Worked great for awhile - then broke, don't know when Bought the 40 pint unit in January, 2007. Hooked it up for continuous drainage after checking that it worked. Dont know when it stopped working. Probably right about the time the year warranty was up. The unit continued to operate - just stopped dehumidifying. I have seen that complaint here before. So check the drainage hose often. Hopefully youll find it broke before the warranty expires. Same experience with customer service - I can pay to send it in and pay to get it back and pay for them to fix it. By the time I did that, might as well just buy a new unit. I wont be buying any Soleus products ever again. A Great Buy! The Soleus Dehumidifier is fabulous: light-weight, effective, and runs so quietly it is hard to tell it is in the room. Most importantly, it has virtually eliminated the humidity issues in the basement within a short time after installation. Great value, great unit, I highly recommend. Worked great... for a while This unit was very quiet. You can sit in the same room a read or watch TV with no distraction. The fan runs continuously so you dont know when its really taking water out of the air. This is only a problem if youd like to turn it off during the winter to save energy. The Kill-a-watt said it was using 330w when running. Pretty darn good. Now the bad. After about 2 years it stopped removing water from the air. The cooling system had apparently stopped working. Most dehumidifiers on the market have a 5 year warranty on the compressor/cooling system. The Soleus only has 1 year on everything. I guess they figured out how long itll usually last without problems. I was really sold on this unit until it quit. Doubt that Ill buy another one from this company unless they improve their warranty. Excellent Choice We have only had the humidifier for a month, but what a vast improvement over our old one! This unit is very quiet and functions extremely well. Its also not too heavy to move around, and is attractive. Highly recommended. BEWARE OF CUSTOMER SUPPORT! This product worked well, until it stopped working. I used it for a couple of years, then it stopped functioning. I attempted to contact customer support to get it repaired, and was very disappointing with the results. Not only will they not give you any information on how you might get it repaired locally, the only repair option available is for you, the customer, to ship this heavy item to their southern California address. Believing that getting it fixed would still be cheaper than a new unit (and environmentally better) I shipped it via UPS, which costed $40. After about a week, I get a call from their customer service saying the unit was unrepairable. No explanation, no description of the problem. Of course I left it with them instead of losing more money. Yes, the unit worked well, but I will NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING AGAIN FROM THIS MANUFACTURER. THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS TERRIBLE! Pay the extra money and buy a product you can get fixed. 0 for 2. Have received second and doesn't work. Bad support. The support queue is straight out of the eighties. Press the number for consumer support, and you hear "you have reached the dealer support and returns department" in a scratchy tape recording. Then it says you are reaching the returns/RMA department. Then you hear 80s jazz music and every 10 seconds you hear "thanks for continuing to hold". Then when the phone rings, you just get put back into the queue. Then once they say it should be replaced, they ask for your invoice. Upon receiving it, they start playing phone tag with you. Then you have to go to Amazon, which has fantastic customer support. The website and manual are very basic. Bad, no---very bad experience. Do not recommend. Do not buy, never great, broke after two years Bought this dehumidifer in 5/06 after reading reviews and tired of replacing the metal-box units sold at Wal-Mart and hhGregg. Was impressed at how quiet it ran and ease of connecting hose output to sump. But never dried the basement as well as prior units. Sometime in summer 2008 (not sure when) it stopped collecting water (didnt realize it wasnt working because the fan and compressor seemed to be running). Owners manual says to check input and output ports for blockage, but the plastic case is held together by four non-standard screws, so I cant get the thing apart to clean it. Soleus web site offers support only for those in warranty (1 year), I sent them an email but do not expect results. KT Very quite product compare to Haier and Goldstar De-humidifier from Walmart. The drawback is that it doesnt come with the drain hose. You have to get it at Home Depot / Plumbing store. QUIET! Dehumidifier This unit does a great job and is SO-O-O-O quiet compared to other units I have purchased. The only thing that would be nice would be a readout showing the current humidity. It cannot be set to a number. Otherwise seems to be a great little unit. Very pleased. We purchased this item almost three years ago. It still runs great: very quiet and keeps the humidity out of the room. This unit solved a long-running mold/mildew problem. No shuttoff This is a super quiet machine and works well, but there are a few things that bug me: -Removing the water bucket is awkward. It doesnt slide out easily and you have to jiggle it around to get it to come out, which sometimes means spilling water if its full -There is no shut off when the machine has reached set humidity, you have to turn it off manually and measure humidity with your own humidity gauge. If you plan on piping the water out, this could be an issue, because it will never shut off. Superb! I am really happy with this model-so quiet, less energy use than my last one, and easy to empty! Need a Whisper Quiet Efficient Dehumidifier? THIS IS IT! This dehumidifier has been working continuously in my basement for two months. I trust it now, but early on I was constantly putting my face down close to it just to make sure it was still working - it is that quiet! I was so pleased with this item that I have since purchased a second unit for another home. You wont go wrong buying this dehumidifier. Highly recommended product Soleus Air CFM-40E Dehumidifier - 40 Pint We are very pleased with this dehumidifier. It is doing the job better than we expected. We use it in our basement & it is very quiet. Would recommend it to anyone. Wow, I'm really impressed!! Despite reading mixed reviews about this product I decided to purchase it. After all, there didnt seem to be a comparable air purifier that received BETTER reviews, so I guess this was the lesser of all evils! The dehumidifier has been running for 3 days ago and I couldnt be happier with it. First of all, its ULTRA-QUIET on the "high" setting. Why someone would need the "quiet" setting is beyond me! Its also very effective in removing humidity! I purchased this unit as a result of my wooden floors being ruined by my housekeeper. Thanks to her cleaning them with a wet mop, the floor buckled throughout my apartment. A flooring company came over and suggested that I get a dehumidifier, and then have them repair any damaged planks once the different areas have gone down. After two months of not seeing an improvement in the floors, I finally bit the bullet and purchased the dehumidifier. I am sooooo glad I did! In just 3 days the floors have gone down more than they have over two months! Plus the ambiance in my apartment is much more comfortable than before. I for one cant stand humidity, and summers in New York City are brutal. So far Im thrilled with this purchase. I really hope that it lasts more than a few days or just one summer, as some people have complained about. While I cant speak about the long-term durability of this product, so far so good! I love it and feel it will save me money in flooring repair costs! If this unit lets me down I will submit another post. As it stands now, I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a compact, silent and effective unit. BTW I understand what people said about the drawer being cumbersome to remove. However, if you follow the instructions and gently pinch the sides before pulling out the drawer its a breeze. The folks that complained were probably trying to remove the drawer from the center, which "jerks" a bit and can get messy. DO NOT BUY Like all of you I read the reviews to help make my decision. I read the two negative reviews about it breaking in 2 months against all the positive reviews. So I decided to take a chance. Yeah, well, 2 months later it broke. Its no longer pulling any water from the air. Now I have to begin the long process of trying to have Soleus replace it. Again looking at what the 2 negative reviewers had to say about that, I dont hold out much hope. So 200.00 bucks for 2 months, doesnt seem like much of a bargain. Needless to say I wouldnt buy a Soleus product again. And if my review steers someone else from buying this shody product, it was worth the time it took to write. Works, but for only six months This worked well at pulling water from the air in my very humid coastal Florida master bathroom. But it failed just six months later. After reading these reviews, it looks as if Im not the only one. Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier Had it for one month and so far its great. We have a very humid basement and its been running almost continuously. Easy to setup and use. While shopping for a humidifier, I called Soleus to ask some questions, and ended up talking to the corp marketing director. Very friendly and technically knowledgeable. I was leaning towards this humidifier already, but he inspired enough confidence to make my choice. Only complaint - the "capture bucket" is small and needed to be emptied twice a day for the first couple of weeks. Once it caught up with the humidity, it went to once every day or two. If they put the same engine in a case that supported a 60-80 pint bucket, itd be perfect Re noise level: - On high or medium, its quiet - In quite mode, its scary quiet ... wondering-what-its-up-to quiet So far my opinion is: Id look to Soleus first for products in this category. Worse Humidifier I've Ever Owned I bought this dehumidifer in October, 2007, received it in November, 2007 and in July, 2008, I have no dehumidifier!! This is the 3rd & 4th dehumidifier Ive owned and it is by far, the worse unit Ive ever purchased. The 1st unit that I bought leaked water all over my basement floor after Id had it for only 2 months. I contacted Soleus, they sent me a new unit, only after I had to mail the broken unit to them at a cost to me of $35! The new unit arrived and worked for about 6 months before it stopped working. The "full bucket" light will not go out, therefore the unit wont work because it thinks the bucket is full. I refuse to spend another penny on this unit to return it to Soleus in California. I based my purchase on the good reviews that this unit received. I cant believe my luck......I had to get 2 defective units. I honestly believe that the 2nd unit that Soleus sent me was a refurbished model and not new, as they told me. Be wary of these models. So Quiet and Powerful! I purchased this item mainly based on the good reviews on this site, so wanted to give my opinion to help others also in the process of buying a dehumidifier. I live in Wisconsin and have a finished basement. We have to run the dehumidifier from spring until winter to keep the dampness out. We had a Maytag dehumidifier that we purchased at Home Depot that just died- it was about 3 years old. It worked well until it died, but it was really loud. Annoyingly so. You could hear it running on the first floor of the home, even though it was in the basement and it sounded like the old compressors in cooling units kicking on and off. This new Soleus one is so quiet, we cant believe it. My husband likes to take naps in the cool basement and used to have to turn off the old Maytage because it was so loud. This one is so quiet you cant even hear anything other than the light sound of a fan. I was worried it wouldnt be big enough, as our basement is about 1700 sq feet, but as long as we empty it in the morning and evening it does a fine job. It really pulls the water out of the air. As far as some complaints I read about not having a handle, I have found that once you have pulled out the water bucket, on the outside of the container on the side that would be inside the unit when operating, there is a cut out about 3 inches wide, made so that you can grasp it there between your palm and fingers and you can easily carry it that way. It pours out fine. We havent had it long enough to say if it is made to last, Ill do another review in a couple years and let you know, but for now, I am impressed that it does such a good job and is so quiet compared to the old, larger Maytag that we had. I would highly recommend it. Not made to last!!! Can't change number of stars- should be 0! Ok- you will see at the end of this review what I originally said the first month or so after I purchased this item. I felt compelled to write in again to say that this product is not made to last. We used it from July 2008 to about October 2008, then turned off for the winter- not needed in Wisconsin during the winter. We went to turn on again in May 2009 and it does not work. We ran it for two days and noticed water leaking out of the unit. It had frozen up on the back of the unit and would no longer collect moisture. I e-mailed Soleus. I have called Soleus. I have gone back and forth with them and they have finally told me they will replace it but I have to pay to ship it back. I dont know the cost of that yet, but Im sure it will be in the $30-40 range. Im glad my unit died before the warranty ended (1 year). I have a bad feeling about the next one I get- will it last more than a year? Now I see many reviews that the unit quit working in a year. Why cant manufacturers make these to last? My parents had the same dehumidifier for 30 years with no problems. This is frustrating. We went through 2 dehumdifiers in about 3-4 years!!! Here is my original review- please take heed- I dont want to be responsible for anyone buying a unit like this!!! I purchased this item mainly based on the good reviews on this site, so wanted to give my opinion to help others also in the process of buying a dehumidifier. It took out the moisture and the smell in just a couple of days. It is also very quiet, dont even notice it running when we are upstairs. Very good product, and would recomment it highly to anyone who needs one. Very pleased Just what I wanted Great product, fast delivery! I am very pleased. very pleased Very happy with this product -love that it is portable -only drawback is that it means you have to empty it more frequently than a larger one but the fact that it can be easily moved from different parts of the house makes it worth it. On an average summer day -will have to empty one to two times in a 24hr. period. Quiet dehumidifier The dehumidifier is very quiet; we keep it on all the time in the basement and guests can stay down there in the summer. still great at 2 yr old I rarely write reviews -good or bad- but thought I should chime in on the Soleus. Iv ehad the unit for 2 years and use it constantly. Ive found it to be outstanding. It is quiet, energy efficient and reliable. It's quiet This is a very quiet unit, at least compared to the one it replaced, which was 20 years old or more. The "high" setting on this is quieter than the "quiet" setting on the old one. Also more energy efficient. The old unit drew 900 watts; this one only draws 350. The collection bin is not easy to remove, thus 4 stars instead of 5. However, you can attach a drain hose so you dont have to empty the bin, which I have done. Overall, very satisfied with the unit. Good product Ive had this unit for about a month now. It is very quiet and works well so far. In our basement, the water bucket fills up about every 24 hours. It does put out some heat, but that is not a problem for us. If I had it to do over I WOULD purchase this product again. Problems Has dumped water on my floor 4 times now through a faulty lift that either gets stuck or doesnt lift. Made my Pergo floor buckle. Has run for days with barely any moisture removed, does not ever turn off, has increased my electric bill by at least $15.00 - $20 per month. I would look elsewhere before buying this unit if I were you as I have a twinge of buyers remorse. 2 months and working great Very quite and the water it removes is amazing. I am running the unit in "continues" quite mode and you can barely hear it. I am glad I bought it. So far, so great Very impressed so far. The unit really seems to be taking the humidity out of the basement. Incredibly quiet. The little wheels on the back & the folding handle make it look just like some carry-on luggage - probably fit just fine in the overhead. Was going to get one from Sears until I read their awful reviews. Only had this one a couple of days, but quite happy with the purchase. everything I needed I needed a quality dehumidifier that was quiet for my office and this delivers. Thought out and easy to use controls. Does a very good job in a 15x15 room in a Michigan walkout basement office. You can work when its on! Very effective and quiet Bought this because the reviews said it is quiet. My tenant had requested a quieter one than our old Westinghouse/JC Penny model. It is extremely quiet. Cant even tell if its running unless I feel the air flow. You cant even hear the compressor, which is supposed to be rotary rather than piston. It is effective too. Running in quiet mode and set to the moist setting it keeps my 900 sf basement at 65%. It only has three humidity settings but even the moist setting keeps my basement dryer than my 17 year old model of the same rated capacity. Three fan setting, but all are very quiet. Light and portable too. One person complained of having trouble finding the right sized hose for drainage, but a standard 5/8" garden hose works perfectly, forget the millimeter measurement they specify. Seems to use much less electricity than the old model too. It remains to be see how it will hold up, but even if it only lasts a few years, for this kind of performance, it will be worth it. Poorly designed! Unit lacks a provision for a drain tube, so you have to empty the reservoir manually at least once a day. Also, if the power gets interrupted, the unit forgets its settings & shuts down. Not worth the money! Great product Ive had this for 13 months and have had no problems. I use it in our basement and it ran steady for 4 months then was used occasionally during the winter. Its now on the 3rd month of continuous use again. I do not use a drainage hose-just empty the water myself because it is easier in my setup. It works well & Ive been so pleased I just ordered another for my son. Very Quiet! So far (1 month) the unit seems to be working beautifully! Noticeably drier in my basement. Very quiet. I had a unit from Sears before that was loud and I couldnt tell any difference in humidity when it ran. It also burned out after 6 months. Worked the first summer that I bought it and not the next... Initially, I thought this was a good product. It was quiet and seemed to work well. I used it during the summer in my basement the first year, put it away for the winter and then tried using it the next summer. It did not work. After countless times of trying to get in touch with customer service, I was finally told to clean the air filter, which I did, and it still did not work. Customer service told me that the dehumidifier was no longer under warranty and they would not fix it. Overall, one of the worst products that I ever bought and the worst customer service to match! I will never buy another Soleus Air product again, nor will I recommend this companys products to anyone. Bottom line: Save your money and wasted aggravation. DONT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!! Soleus Air CFM-40 delivers I recently purchased this unit and I have to say I was impressed with the size and low dB noise level. So far so good...I little expensive but if it last longer than my Kenmore unit(Broken twice and sounds like a 747) it will be worth it. It suffered a bit in shipping ,snapping the side panel out of place, but I was able to push it back in without breaking the panel. Best I've used After having 2 failed Maytag units from Home Depot, at almost twice the price I tried this one. WOW works 10 times better then the Maytags and you can not hear it running unless you are standing next to it. GREAT PRODUCT AND EVEN BETTER PRICE!!! Good Product - Buy Out of Season for Best Price Working well so far. I bought this in March when the price was $135. I would suggest that you wait - if possible - and buy out of season as the prices have been raised significantly in the summer months. Ask them after a few seasons... When I ask people for recommendations, whether its a car or a contractor, I usually target people who have had a few years of owning the product. Whether the car is always in the shop or whether the tiling is still in good shape. I give this product three stars because after 1 season (3 full months) of non-stop use, the compressor broke on me - only the fan runs but there is no dehumidification. For the season that I was using it, it was wonderful - low heat, low noise, always a full tank of water per day. This season, I turned it on and found it had no effect on the humidity in my basement. I threw it out and bought a Kenmore that comes with a 5-year warranty on the compressor. That unit also had a lot of complaints and frankly, I prefer the one-season long performance of the Soleus, but I dont expect to pay ~$250 for only a single season of low humidity. I thought maybe this was a lemon, but I did have one season of good results and I did a search on the internet and found that others also had similar experiences of only the fan working and no water collection. If you read the Amazon reviews, pay attention if theyve had it for some significant period of time. Love It This really is quiet and I dont even have it on the "Quiet" setting. I have it on "Dry" and "High", and it does a great job in my basement. For the first few days, I had it draining into the bucket. In 24 hours I emptied it twice as it was working so well. Then I attached the hose so it would empty directly into the floor drain. The specifications called for a 15mm inside diameter hose, however when I arrived at the store, the measurements were in inches, not millimeters. If this happens to you, buy the hose that is 5/8s inch inside diameter. This is not a garden hose with a fitting at the end; its tubing only. I used the clear one. When it works, it works very well. The switch that shuts off the unit was defective and consistently shut it off prematurely. So we have returned it in exchange for the same model. We had no problems with how it operated, especially how quiet it was. We purchased this model knowing, from the the reviews here, that getting a defective one seemed like a 50/50 proposition. We ordered anyway because of the good comments about the amazon return policy. Although we had to re-pack the unit and take it to UPS, amazon made the return as easy as they could. The replacement unit is on its way. Our fingers are crossed that the new one will work properly. Never worked right Very quiet? Yes indeed! Does it pull moisture from the air? Yep. Like crazy! However, after about one month of use I noticed that the compressor works only at the highest "Dry" setting, and it never shuts down. I used a watt/amp-meter since it is difficult to tell if the compressor is on or off just by sound. It cost me $38 to ship the unit back for replacement and they only replace it with a refurbished one. This is grossly unfair for a product that never worked right. I am very certain that some of the satisfied users have the same problem but unaware of it. Worked great one summer then not at all the next. Ive never lived in a really humid climate before and did a lot of research before selecting the Soleus CFM-40E. I ordered it in May 2007 and received it by the end of the month. I put it to work right away and it was great. Once the humidity went down in the fall, I turned it off and stored it away. A few weeks ago (May 2008) the humidity started to rise again so I plugged it back in. It seemed to be operating fine, but it wasnt pulling any moisture out of the air. I double-checked everything and made sure the filters were clear and then called customer service. After waiting about 10 minutes, I left a message (because they tell you they will call you back.) They didnt call me back. I called again and waited until someone answered (over 10 minutes). I was instructed to run it at certain settings for 24 hours and call back if it didnt collect any water. I followed the instructions and it continued to NOT WORK, so I called them back (last Friday.) Another long wait, another message, another failure for them to call me back. I call again on Tuesday, another long wait, they finally answer. I describe the problem and they tell me, too bad its out of warranty. (And even if it was, I would have to pay the shipping.) BOTTOM LINE: Unreliable, short-lived product that is not backed by the manufacturer. Customer support is very pleasant to speak with and quite sympathetic, but wont do anything for you. I will never buy another Soleus product and I urge anyone considering them to look elsewhere. Beware of lousy warranty/customer service! I bought this dehumidifier April 26th, 2007 on Amazon.com. It was delivered promptly in about a week . It worked wonderfully last season. I put it away in its origingal box for the winter and took it out the first week of May 2008. It would turn on, but not dehumidify. I called Soleus and at first they seemed eager to help me... However, since the machine was technically two weeks from delivery out of warranty, they would be willing to fix it if I paid full shipping both way $[...], a $[...] per hour bench fee, plus what ever the parts etc. would come to. In a nut shell...probably more than what I initially paid for it. There was no flexibility on there part. Two weeks out of warrenty! I then reviewed the customer feedback at Epinions.com and based on their recommendations I bought an LG from Home Depot for less than the Soleus AND with a 5year warranty! Not disappointed! I bought this after reading the reviews and I havent been disappointed. It is the quietest dehumidifier Ive ever owned. My own fault--wish Id bought one with a larger tank! worked well at first I spent a lot of time researching dehumidifiers before I bought one and thought I was making a wise choice. Come to find out I didnt. This dehumidifier worked great for 1 year and a few weeks but now only the fan works and it is not taking any moisture out of the air. We called the company and of course it has a one year warranty. Of course if we want to spend a lot of money sending it to them to look at we can but they cannot guarantee anything. So, here we are a little over a year later and shopping again. I had to write a review warning others to shop around. This is a great product! I purchased my first Soleus Air CFM 40 E 40 Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistate in 2005. It it still working flawlessly. I recently gave this unit to my son to use in his basement, because he didnt have a dehumidifier. So, I purchased another identical unit about 2 months ago for myself and it is also working flawlessly. Hopefully, it will continue to work as well as the first unit. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone who is shopping for a dehumidifier. Good and quiet machine I decided to purchase this item after carefully reviewing online comments. Its very quiet. It works great so far. However the machine didnt come with any warranty information and I hope I wont need it. I wish the drainage hose comes with it. Great product I have an older dehumidifier of another brand. It works okay, but was loud like having a semi engine running in the room. This Soleus one, however, was extremely quiet when in the quiet mode, and still gets the job done. I am very happy with it since I have it 2 months ago. Soleus CFM-40E This model is quiet and very effective. Itll suck a room dry in a few hours. It costs a little more than the better known brands, but I think you get what you pay for. VERY QUIET and EFFICIENT This dehumidifier is quiet and really gets a lot of water out of the air. I am using it in my 12 x12 barn tack room and I have to empty the tank every 12 hours. Because of this, I decided to punch out the circle on the side of the unit and attach the recommended 15mm hose for continuous drainage. I would have given this product 5 stars if they had included the hose. It took THREE trips to home depot. I DID do the conversion ahead of time and 15 mm (the required size) is .59 inches. Of course the hardware stores here dont sell that exact size but they do have a 5/8th inch inner diameter (.625 in) that will work. HOWEVER, the one I obtained at Home Depot in the plumbing dept. easily bends and kinks so that was an issue. So 3 helpful hints if you are going to use continuous draining: 1. get the right size hose as stated above and remember that is INNER diameter. 2. try to get a firm hose that wont kink. (Has to have SOME flexibility however to comply with hint 3 below). 3. make sure the unit drainage port is higher then your drainage area so gravity can take the water out. The hose should flex slightly down and out. Soleus really should have included the hose! Also, their customer support was horrid. I got what sounded like a teenage boy that didnt listen to a word I said and after I inquired about a conversion from mm to inches so I could find a hose, he told me to get a 15 INCH one. He was clueless. Other then that, it is working fine. I need another one for my office but I hesitate to buy it due to the poor customer service and the few reviews done by folks that have stored the unit then found after storage the compressor no longer worked. That is a little worrysome coming from more then a few people.... Very pleased I have been using the Soleus now for only 2-3 weeks. It is by far the quietest dehum we have had--can easily sleep in the same room with it. It seems to work very effectively. Storage tank is somewhat small (since it works so well/fast), but I plan on installing a drain hose to take care of that. Guess it would be nice if they included that in the box... Only gave 4 stars as we havent had it long enough to rate how long it works well. I have no reservations recommending it. Stopped working after 14 months We bought two of these and both functioned as advertised. Now one has stopped removing moisture. The fan still runs but it is not dehumidifying. Since it is now out of warranty, the only help Customer Service gave us was to take it to a Sears repair center and MAYBE they could repair it. We are looking for a replacement. We will not order this brand again, it was too expensive to last just 14 months. Very Pleased We have a fairly large basement that has remained musty even with an old Sears dehumidifier running continuously. As a test, we shut off the old dehumidifier when we first started using the Soleus unit. It single handedly reduced the moisture level and musty smell. It also runs very quietly. Weve had the unit for nearly a month and are very pleased. quiet Cant talk about its durability - only had it for 6 weeks, but in that time it has kept my basement dry and is very quiet running. So far very happy with it. Pleasantly surprised Didnt know what to expect because the price was quite a bit lower than some other sites. I am very sceptical when this happens. I took a chance because of Amazons good reputation and ordered it. The dehumidifier arrived when it was scheduled. It was in mint condition and it is working perfectly. The "quiet" setting is very nice since it is out in the living area of our basement. The only nit-pick with the Soleus is that you have to be a little careful when emptying the tank when it is clear full. Highly recommended. I am very satisfied with my Soleus dehumidifier and with Amazon. Soleus 40 pint dehumidifier This product met my requirements for a dehumidifier. It works, its quiet, and a garden hose can be attached to it. The price was also reasonable. Great Product The Soleus CFM-40 great little product. Its quiet, efficient, and user friendly. I love having the optional drain port - which I have hooked to 1/2 inch cpvc running into a drain in my basement. My basement is very moist (filled up the pan in about 5 hours before hooking up the auto-drain,) and there is a constant drip from the drain setup. The only negative I have is that the CFM-40 does not reset after a power outage or after unplugging it. You must manually reset it in order for it to get it going again. It does lose 1 star for that reason. Soleus Dehumidifier I like the Soleus unit in terms of its small size and performance at the low setting, and it is very quite, the quietest dehumidifier I have ever had. Unfortunately ours only works at the low setting and then only on the continuous cycle, so I will have to send it in for service at the end of the summer. Quiet, but humidistat not working out of box Compared with the previous three dehumidifiers I had, this one is much, much quieter. I am very happy with this feature. But the humidistat is not working out of the box. Whichever setting I chose, only the fan was blowing but the compressor would not kick in. I am now using the continuous setting. Also, I hope the reservior is bigger. One-year dehumidifier I brought this dehumidifier two years ago. It worked well for the first summer - quiet and dehumidified the air. After storing it away for the winter, the machine did not work anymore when we needed it last summer. The fan worked fine but no water was collected (compressor problem). Fortunately, we were still within the warranty period and the company shipped us a refurbished machine. Took about 3 weeks. We had to pay for the shipping of the defective unit. That replacement worked well again for a year... Now I took out the machine and it is not working again. Same problem. It appears that if you store the machine away for a long period of time, the compressor part just stops "talking to the rest of the unit"... I am not sure if I will buy anything from this company again... On a different note, my kenmore dehumidifier in the basement is still working after 5 years. Yet the Soleus machine received a much higher rating from Amazon customers than the Kenmore one... SUPER QUIET AND EFFECTIVE I have owned four different brands of dehumidifiers, over the past few years. This unit is the quietest I have ever had. The "high" fan setting on this unit results in a noise level that is actually lower than most regular fans running at medium speed. The unit also works well, pulling a lot of moisture from the air. Satisfied Customer I recently purchased the Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat from Amazon. After one week of use here is my initial review comments. Overall I am satisfied with the Dehumidifier, it does its job of keeping my basement dry. The installation was quick, I didnt have any difficulty in getting the Dehumidifier up and running. And I have been emptying out bucket of water every couple of days. What I dont like, is to run into continuous drain mode, I have to connect a pipe of 15 mm internal diameter. I have tried in Home Depot and couldnt find the pipe. I had hoped they would have packaged at 5 dollar pipe with this expensive Dehumidifier, which would have avoided the trips to Home Depot. Most of us would benefit from that. Compressor Died The compressor died less than a year after purchase. It seemed nice, quiet, air blown at about room temperature (unlike so many that blow warm/hot air). Looks like were back to Sears brick and mortar. At least I can return it and theyll replace it (happened once before). Excellent purchase This appliance performs as promised in the very positive reviews from others. Quiet. Efficient and compact. The best dehumifier we have ever had and we have had many. It stinks! I purchased Soleus Air cfm-40 and in 15 months the compressor went out. Yes, I know it only has a 12 month warrantee but Gee whiz. I called the company explained the problem. They quoted $49.00 hr service fee plus new compressor and shipping both ways $70. I ask about regional service. they said no and they hung up on me.So it is a throw away!!! It stinks. The worst product I have ever bought We have a humid basement in the summer and run two humidifers. After one unit gave out, I bought this product after reading the glowing reviews last year. It looks and feels like a quality unit, but after running it several days we collected no water. Not a drop. Fortunately, Amazon has a great exchange policy so we tried again. Same results--again not a drop after several days. Unfortunately, I have other things to do in my life than exchange dehumidifiers, so I let this one go too long and had to return it to the manufacturer and pay for shipping. I asked the customer service rep to please make sure we received a good unit by testing it first. We received the third unit, tried it in our basement, and again, not a drop of water collected. I wonder if these units are really fans, and not dehumidifers. I have no evidence to the contrary. I wish this were just some dumb mistake on my part, but if it is, the customer support people didnt explain the mistake, nor does the user manual. Installing a dehumidifier isnt especially difficult and Ive never had any problems with any other brands. Stay far away from this product. If you are tempted, buy it locally so you dont have to pay for shipping. Best dehumidifier We have tried at least 3 other brands of dehumidifier, but the Soleus CFM-40E has been the only one that runs quiet enough for us to recommend. We bought our first Soleus CFM-40E three years ago. It quit dehumidifying on us two months ago. We bought our second one last month. It worked as good as the first. Maybe it will last at least another 3 years. Highly recommended. Couldn't be happier This is my first dehumidifier and without having any experience, I depended upon Amazon.coms reviews to make my decision. For the price, this was the highest rated unit I could find, so even though Id never heard of Soleus, I decided to give it a try. The reason I purchased this unit is because I have indoor allergies, partially caused by dust mites and I read that a dehumidifier helps to control moisture, thereby controlling dust mites. Within a few days of plugging this in, I could already feel a difference in my allergies. Less stuffiness, less sneezing, etc. A side benefit is that I also noticed that the house is noticably cooler. I used to set my thermostat to 76 and now its set to 80 because without the humidity, the house is noticably cooler (even here in Florida). The only downside is that the water collection tray fills up after about a day, so I find myself dumping water out at least once a day. I could remedy this by putting a hose in the tray to drain the water, but I havent felt ambitious enough to do that just yet. I wish I could give this product a rating of higher than 5 stars because it is really that good. perfect so far Perfect so far . Have had this dehumidifier for 1 month and has done everything one expects from a dehumidifier .Its very quiet and creates volumes of water .Its light and dosent take up much space. Now if it lasts as long as my last dehumidifier , 25-30 years ,it would be perfect! Returned it next day Read the reviews and ordered this to give it a shot. Unfortunately, the model I got leaked oil into the water tank, and hardly took any water out of the air at all. I returned it right away and will get a Whirlpool AD50USS2 (be sure you get the model ending in 2) instead. I tried them all. This is a great dehumidifier. If you havent purchased a dehumidifier lately they are very noisy. I have tried an LG 45pint, Delonghi 50 pint, GE50 pint, and recently a new model Danby 65 pint because it was supposed to be quiet. They were all very loud. The Soleus is the only one that is truly quiet. It has a continuous drainage feature that you just slide a standard garden hose (end cut off) over a male end and its good to go. I plugged it in and even on high fan speed it is very quiet. It has been keeping my basement at about 49-50 % rh the same as the larger 50 and 65 pint models were without it sounding like a truck idling in my basement. Hopefully it will last a while but honestly even if it only lasts a year I would buy anther one....for the peace and quiet. Fantastic product! Fog and moisture goes with being in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ive never liked the dampness in the house but never used anything beyond dry desiccants. Granular desiccants are messy and you need to remember to drain the container or it overfills. It was time for another solution. I expected the dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air in the house, but I never would have imagined that I would be emptying the reservoir once very two days. Not just after banishing the initial moisture but this has become routine. After two months, I really need to figure out how to adapt the unit for continuous draining. If you have even a slight moisture issue, dont hesitate. Get one of these units and better your living situation. Ive realized that quality of life items such as these are more a necessity than a luxury item. I cant say enough good things about the Soleus Air. Does not work after 3 months, returned next one lasted 2 months Do not buy this product. I bought it new one year ago. It worked for 3 months. I spent $25 to return it and they replaced it. The new one lasted 2 months. I will not send this one back because I need a dehumidifier that works. Amazing Bought this product several years ago and it is still working great and keeps my basement humidity low so stored items wont grow mold or smell. Very Pleased! Quiet and Efficient! We read the reviews on this before we purchased, and while some folks have evidently gotten some defective units, the one we purchased has run beautifully, QUIET and so much more efficient than our old humidifier. The design is pleasing and easy to read, use and empty - we recommend this dehumidifier whole-heartedly~ Recommendation (plus a question) I got this dehumifier a few days ago, my first, and am pretty pleased with it. The unit pulls a surprising amount of water from the air in a short amount of time (3-4 cups in 30 minutes), and makes just the right amount of noise (not much. nice quiet noise). It arrived quickly, in good shape, and was out of the box and working in about 5 minutes. Super easy. My question: Is it supposed to be a heater, too? Im surprised/disappointed that it sends hot dry air into the room (way better that hot wet air, but still). Theres no control setting for temp, so I guess its just going to do that. Do they all? Is it a function of heat generated by the work the motor is doing or of the qualities of the air as water is pulled from it? If the first, Ill probably keep trying to find one that is like this in every way, but doesnt coincidentally funtion as a heater. If the latter, Ill enjoy my hot (but dry!) house. Best thing in the house! The Soleus is the best thing Ive purchased all year! I live in a rainy forest region and my entire ground floor apartment was consistently damp and smelled musty. Within the first two days of plugging in the Soleus, the musty smell was gone. Within a week, the whole apartment was dry and cozy. I rarely run the heater anymore because there is no damp to hold the cold. I just run the Soleus 24/7 and all is fine. The machine is very quiet even on the "high" setting. I can even sleep in the same room with it, no problem. Ive had mind for a month and it runs like a champ with a weekly filter cleaning. Ditto All the positive things other posters have written are absolutely true. Quiet, efficient, well made, etc., etc. I would definately buy one again. Great dehumidifier for the price. We have downstairs bathroom with no ventilation so we needed something to keep the mold from growing on everything. One option was to run the central AC all the time and keep the whole house cold. This is a much better option! Just started this last night and has already taken a GALLON of water from the air. The bathroom feels better and warmer since we started running this machine. It is quiet enough that we cant hear it in the next room. It appears to be well built. One feature I like is that I can hook a hose to it and allow it to drain constantly so I dont have to keep emptying it. Best Buy I have purchased 2 of these and couldnt be more satisfied. Both are very quiet...you can hardly tell they are on. Stopped working after a year I bought this unit from Amazon over a year ago, based on reviews. It worked fine for slightly more than a year and then just stopped working. The motor works fine and it looks like it is doing its job but it does not collect water anymore. I even ran it overnight after we had a broken pipe in the basement and had to dry the basement out and the next morning there was not a drop of water collected. I tried to call Soleus and they were not helpful. I played phone tag with someone for awhile and the Soleus representative got testy after awhile because she called when I was not home (even after I left a message stating times when I would be home). The message I left acknowledged that the device was no longer under warranty, I just wanted to know if they could advise me about what I could do to fix the problem. I finally gave up. We will have to find another dehumidifier and it will not be from Soleus. Amazing After reading all of the reviews we recently purchased this dehumidifier. We could not be happier with it. We live a few miles from the beach so we needed a dehumidifier only at night. It is amazing how quiet it is and how much water is pulled from the air that we have to empty it every day. It makes the house much warmer, without even turning the heat on. Highly recommend this product!! So far...it works great! The 40 pint Soleus Air dehumidifier works great. This dehumidifier is almost completely silent. I knocked off a star for the following reasons. The units fan runs continuously, it doesnt cycle on and off. When you cut the power the unit does not reset itself. And finally my electricity bill went up $30 for the month. To be fair, we had it running on continuous 24/7 for the entire month. Those things aside, this is the best dehumidifier we have ever owned. I only hope it can deliver this kind of performance for years to come. Works Great...replaced my noisy unit I purchased this unit entirely based on the reviews of other users as I cant find one in a store to actually see how it runs, etc,... and I am glad I did. This unit draws only 2.9A of current (from the power line) compared to the 7.4A my old one does, and its very quiet compared to the old one. Although its only about 75% as powerful as my old unit in terms of its dehumidifying power, its definitely more efficient when you compared the power consumed vs. the amount of moisture it removes from the air. I typically just operate this unit for 8 hours at night, and the humidity usually drops by 8-10% in the morning when I switch it off. Overall, a decent product.... Great product--when it actually works Its a complete crapshoot whether you receive a perfectly functioning machine or a non-functioning one. We purchased this dehumidifier based on the excellent reviews while noting the critical reviews of product reliability and poor customer service. Wish we had picked a different product. The first one worked only on continuous setting. If you selected a specific humidity level it simply would not collect water on any level. Fair enough, but that means that it is either *always* or *never* running which is not what the product is supposed to offer. The replacement arrived (from the good people at Amazon, NOT Soleus I might add) and did not work at all. It ran all day, all night and all day again in a basement room with active water seepage. The result: A bone dry tank. Not one molecule of water collected. We tried all the settings to no avail. Weve been instructed to return them both for a refund as the problem seems "more widespread" than previously known, according to Amazon. Buyer Beware. For real. Quiet, Effective Dehumidifier For a dehumidifier, this ones very quiet. Also, on its highest setting, it pulls water very effectively from the correct-sized area. We have this dehumidifier on the second floor of our house - about 800 sq. feet. It works like a charm and runs quitely. Great dehumidifier This is our 4th dehumidifier. The first one I bought almost 20 years ago is still chugging along, but the last two we bought (sears) have both crapped out after just 2-3 years of usage. Although its only been one year since owning the Soleus, Im happy with the unit. Its light, easy to operate and extremely quiet! We have it in the basement but you can easily use this is a living area given how quiet it is. The only thing on my wish list would be the size of the basin and the ease of removing it. You can grab it from the bottom but the top is wide open so you have to be a little careful so you dont spill as you remove it. If this fails like the others after another year or two, Ill be sure to let everyone know A disappointment I bought this dehumidifier in December 2006 as a supplement to, or possible replacement for, my Kenmore 70-pint unit, which was becoming noisy. At first I was pleased because the Soleus is so quiet, important because of a basement bedroom. I did notice that it pulled moisture about half as fast as the Kenmore. Eventually I moved the Soleus to a smaller room in the basement and ran both dehumidifers. The Soleus ran fine for about six months, maybe more, but sometime in the summer the condenser stopped working and only the fan blew. I let it sit unplugged for a few months, then tried it again. No go. When I called the Soleus customer service folks in California they said I could ship it back to them, at my cost, for a replacement unit within the one-year warranty period. I shipped it off at my own cost of nearly $100--this, of course, in addition to the original $250 I paid for it. It arrived in their warehouse, my case number on the shipping label, on Dec. 7, 2007. The holidays passed and no replacement came, so I started e-mailing and leaving phone messages for my contact person, with no response. Finally in mid-January I hung on the line and got through to a customer service rep who tracked down my case and my contact person. He then claimed that my old machine had arrived without a case number on it, ignoring the fact that Id e-mailed him directly with the UPS tracking number and left voice mails on his extension. I finally received my replacement on Jan. 18, 2008, and guess what? Its been running for 24 hours with not a drop of water in the tank! The Kenmore, which Id turned off, had been pulling 70 pints every 2-3 days. Ive been through the Soleus manual and cant imagine what I might be doing wrong. After all, the first unit worked fine for half a year. I guess its back to customer service, but I wont be shipping this baby back to California and I wont be buying another Soleus. A disappointment -- worked less than a year I bought this dehumidifier in December 2006 as possible replacement for my Kenmore 70-pint unit, which was becoming noisy. Our old Kenmore works better than this! We have a super old Kenmore dehumidifyer that is years old. Its like a Mac truck and is bulky and loud...but it works like a charm. The reason I wanted a new one is its hard to watch TV because it is so noisy. The new Soleus just doesnt do the same job at removing moisture from the basement. Its been assigned to the back room, and the bulky Kenmore is once again in the TV room. The Soleus is just not worth the money. About to order my 4th! I live very close to the ocean and have a hard time with mold. I have 3 Soleus dehumidifiers...one the 40 pt and 2 25s, and they all work incredibly well. Musty smell gone, mold very minimal in closets/areas that would otherwise be horrible. The oldest dehumidifier has been in constant operation since 2005...thought it had broken (motor running but no water) but just cleaned the filter and it is working like a champ! Didnt think of dehumidification when we renovated our house, so I have to empty the water collection container every 24-48 hours...the only drawback. I also didnt realize that the difference between the 40 and the 25 was in extraction, not the size of the container for the water, so I didnt really need the 40 pt (was hoping to empty a little less frequently.) I have another closet I think could use the 4th. Heloise hint: the containers will start to grow something after a bit...a little bleach rinse periodically will keep them fresh and clean. I havent tried others...read multiple sites and reviews before buying the first...but Im very happy with these. About to order my 4th! I live very close to the ocean and have a hard time with mold. Fan still works, but no water... and trust me, its still plenty humid in my Seattle basement. Worked great while it worked, but... Worked great for a couple months, then died. After doing a lot of research online, this was the product with the best reviews. I have to admit. They were right. It works great and is EXTREMELY quiet. I would definitely recommend it. I also found the best value on Amazon - lower price and free shipping (when I ordered). I would buy this product again and I will continue to shop on Amazon. Theyre great! Can't recommend product or company Our unit lasted less than three months before it stopped working. Its annoying when something this big and heavy has to be sent back to the manufacturer, but it is even more annoying when the manufacturer has unusually poor customer service policies. Their policy is that the customer has to send back the defective unit before theyll send out a replacement. Weve thrown away the original packaging materials so I offered to pay for the replacement unit so it could be shipped first, then Id ship the defective unit back in the box that the replacement arrived in and they could credit my charge card. This is a fairly common return process and would save me about $20 - $40 in packing costs. I still would have to pay about $50 in shipping fees to get the defective unit back to the manufacturer but at least I wouldnt be shelling out close to $90 for their shoddy workmanship. But the manufacturer replied that they wouldnt do it that way. We looked a long time for a dehumidifier that was reliable and thought that this unit was it. We either had bad luck or didnt do enough research. Removes amazing amounts of water from the air This works great! The tank was more than half full running overnight. Since Ive used it more the tank is a bit less than half full overnight. Quiet mode is like white noise and not too loud if it is not right next to you. It feels much warmer and I am using less heat this winter and feeling more cozy. I live near a bay and it can get damp. It would have gotten 5 stars if it wasnt so heavy. It is portable but still a chore for me to move around. I have no place to hook up a drain hose which would make it easier to use. Great Product! This is a great product! I live in Colorado where the outside humidity level is usually between 10-20%. I had a small flood in my basement in the spring and thought opening the windows and using fans would work, but the clammy air and musky odor never went away. I got the Soleus Air, and the machine was pulling a bucket full of water out of the air every 3-4 days! Now my basement smells fresh and feels dry. I havent needed to use it for the past 6 weeks since the smell went away and since my heating has been on, so well see how well it does next spring...The bucket is easy to remove, the machine isnt too noisy, its very easy to set up, and didnt notice much increase on my electric bill. I definitely recommend this product! THE dehumidifier Like others have posted, its very quiet. An outstanding product at a super price. Great Dehumidifier Purchased this product for a damp, musty basement, and it really works very well. I bought it based on other reviews and is has not disappointed. Living in Seattle, where it rains all the time, our basement has become damp and musty smelling. Now with this, it no longer smells and I empty the hooper once a day. The auto-shutoff feature is great for when we forget to empty it. It is very quiet. Would recommend it to anyone. This machine works!! Without question, I would say that if you have too much humidity in your home as I did, YOU NEED THIS MACHINE!! Ive been dreading each upcoming winter until I did some research and found this unit. We have an old uninsulated home that grew so much mold each winter due to overgrown trees, etc. that my child was getting sick. Now after purchasing the Soleus CFM-40 (strictly based upon all the positive reviews it has received), my home was changed overnight! Its comfortably dryer (finally at 47 percent from 75 percent), much warmer (my heater doesnt run endlessly and without any results) and NO MOLD!!! I know its always doing its job since I have to empty it TWO to THREE times a day and its FULL each time!!! Oh and like theyve said, ITS SO QUIET! This is just icing on the cake, especially since it runs 24/7. Thank you to all of you for your reviews on this product -- youve saved my sanity & preserved my childs health this winter! Don't Waste Your Money After reading all the great reviews for this product (and I read every one of them), we plunged in an bought one last year even though we felt it was pricey. When we received it, we had a heck of a time getting it to power on. Once it did, it DID do a fantastic job at removing the humidity and it was very quiet....but it stopped working after a couple months. Something to do with the power on button itself, we think. So, my husband played around with it and finally got it working again. Wouldnt you know it? We had a power failure during a storm a day later. Now the dehumidifier refuses to work again. If I had to do it all over again, Id never buy this brand. This machine works!! Without question, I would say that if you have too much humidity in your home as I did, YOU NEED THIS MACHINE!! Works Great and pretty quiet I have owned mine one year. Its usually on. Its effective: keeps the entire 3-room basement dry. A guest slept in the basement and commented on its quietude the next morning. Its fan always runs when ON, even thought the compressor may not be running if the humidity is low. Be careful to keep the closable vent at the top open...it can be closed while the machine is on, which is Not Good (but not fatal for mine.) Mine did freeze up once; it was left on at ~60degF. Remember to clean the air inlet cover mesh once in a while. Keep in mind that 40 pints means it can remove that much H2O in a day; youll have to empty the pan all too often; I use a hose-to-drain now. The hose drain is ~12" from the units bottom, so your drain must be lower than that. Little pumps are available(elsewhere)so you can drain UP to your laundry tub. Worth it! Oh Dry Up Our household has used the Soleus dehumidifyer for several weeks now. As measured by our hygrometer, the machine pulls the humidity in our workshop down about 10 or 15% within 6 hours on humid days. It is a very noticeable difference on days we decide not to have the dehumidifyer on. We are very pleased so far. The machine runs fairly quietly. The fan seems to be louder than the compressor.....a welcome relief from our previous dehumidifyer. One thing....be aware this product generates some heat into the air as well as dehumidifying it. I would not recommend it where one stores wine for example. Otherwise, I think it is a winner! Oh Dry Up Our household has used the Soleus dehumidifyer for several weeks now. I was worried my new furniture would become musty over time. Im not worried any longer. This little mighty mite pulls about 2 gallons of water from the air each and every day. I empty it morning and night. Its very easy to empty and my plants enjoy the watering. The quiet mode is just like it says. You dont even notice its on. It works very well, in fact so well that I have to run it on low. If I turn it up I have to empty it several times a day because the water container is fairly small. Its possible to attach a drain hose, but I have no convenient place to discharge the water. Its also very quiet, if you want to use it in an occupied space. I have been using it for about 5 months and am very happy with it. Fails Just after one year Ive owned two of these units in the last two years and both failed to defrost themselves just after the one year warranty ran out and then just totally failed to do anything afterwards. Chinese made Junk. Buy something with a longer warranty. Happy With Purchase I bought this unit for use in the basement. It works very well, in fact so well that I have to run it on low. Our Coffee shop, at 500 square feet, is constantly steamed up from the espresso machine (steam wands). Condensation would puddle on the floor, and it was so moist that our two doors warped, making it a chore to throw the deadbolt at the end of the day. We bought this unit, it arrived within 5 days,we put it at the back of the shop, and WHAM! No more condensation!! We empty the bucket twice each day, and this little machine just keeps going and going and going 24/7.... and yes, the doors have dried out, which makes my baristas VERY happy! The bonus here is that its really quiet, even on the highest setting. Great product! Really Glad I Purchased This! Quiet and dependable - makes an amazing difference in the atmosphere of the room its in after a weeks time. This has been running continuously since I purchased it and I havent experienced any issues to report. Really Glad I Purchased This! Soileus dehumidifier Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat The dehumidifier is attractive, runs quietly and certainly is taking a lot of water out of my basement! After a month of operation I have no complaints! Works Great - Drainage Solution Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat Effective in controlling humidity in approximately 2500 sq. ft. area (shop and garage) to 40 - 41% when set on "dry" and "quiet." A previous reviewer complained about difficulty in configuring a drainage. I was successful in using 1/2" poly supply tubing designed for use with a drip irrigation system. The 1/2" tubing fits perfectly over the nipple. The combination of elbows and nipples makes the drainage system almost infinitely configurable. Just as other reviews on here say.. I selected this dehumidifier because of the positive reviews. I am glad I did! It works great, like everyone else said. We are wondering what our electric bill will look like though, I was told (after purchase) that it can suck quite a bit of electricity. An issue not related to the product: we had a very long hose connected to it to drain it out and it worked great. Since we relplaced it with a more reasonable 5 foot leader hose, we cant get it to drain anymore! The solias dehumidifier when we recieved the product we had to return it. So I rated this a 3 because why didnt work the first time. We had to return it. This was a hassel. But I have to agree it is quiet and effient now. Soleus, seems to work great Bought the Soleus 40 Pint dehumidifier through Amazon about two weeks ago. The item arrived within 8 days of being ordered (live in Alaska), so it was a pretty quick delivery. The unit runs well and is fairly quiet, at least no louder than a fan. Was having problems with a gray mold attacking pretty much everything made of leather in my bedroom; motorcycle jacket, boots, belts, etc. It removed about 3 gallons of water during the first week and is running great. Have left it on continual run to make sure the RH stays below 40% and it has maintained the room between 34% and 37%. While it would be great if Soleus would make a unit with automatic settings with a wider capacity than the 50-60-70% RH, say down to 35% I cannot lower my rating, since I knew about the limited auto settings, before making the purchase. Worth every cent!!! It sucks out up to 4 gallons of water in a 24 hour period on humid days!!! Its been running almost non-stop for about a year now. Great Dehumidifier! We purchased this Soleus for our basement and has been working wonderfully for the months weve owned it. We live in Georgia and the humidity here is very high. Well probably need to save some of this water due to the drought! Great product! "I've flown with you twice and you've crashed half the time." I have purchased 2 of these dehumidifiers. After less than three months, one has stopped removing moisture from the air. The second dehumidifier, is currently working well. At this time, however, I do not know if the warranty is worth the paper it is written on. I live approximately 45 miles inland from the Gulf coast. It has been my experience that while the outside tempurature was still warm, one dehumidifier could lower humidity 10% or less in the room, form 60% down to 50%. Now that it has been cool this past week the still functioning dehumidifier has brought the humidity down from approximately 48% to 39%. During the higher humidity level days, the dehumidifiers filled their tanks two times a day. Therefore, I am glad that I purchased the larger capacity model CFM-40E. (Both the CFM-25E and the CFM-25E have the same size tank, supposedly the later removes more moisture from the air in a given time period.) Great Dehumidifier! Well probably need to save some of this water due to the drought! Great product! Removes Humidity Ive been using this dehumidifier for two months now, practically non-stop. Chicago in the summer is a very humid place. This unit effectively and quietly removes excess humidity from the air in my 1,800 square foot condo. The storage is adequate -- I have to empty it when I get home from work. I may set it up so it drains automatically, but emptying once a day isnt much of a problem. I am originally from the West coast where humidity is practically unheard of. Ive been susceptible to the high Chicago humidity since Ive been here, but never managed to get a dehumidifier until this summer. I wish I had done it years sooner. Quiet, mobile, works This is a nice unit. Quieter, lighter, and easier to use than other dehumidifiers Ive had. Pulls water out of the air quickly and works flawlessly so far (1 month). Dont expect to be able to use it like a table though and maybe it wouldnt stand up to much banging around as its mostly plastic. A Skeptic at First, but Now a Total Believer After reading some negative reviews on this product, I was somewhat skeptical. I even kept the box for repair. But after 5 long, continuous months of operation, this product is truly fantastic. We live in Colorado and our basement consistantly stayed above 70% humidity during the summer. The area is around 1500 square feet. Naturally, we were sticky in this somewhat dry part of the state. Ive been running this on high, continuous dehumidification every day and weve been able to keep the humidity in the basement below 40%. Its attractive, quiet, and easy to clean. The reservior is small, so you may want to install a continuous drain line (which is not included but cheap to get). Some people have had issues with the unit and I think I know why: theyre overheating. As with any dehumidifier, overheating is the killer. To prevent this: 1) Turn the dehumidifier around, so the filter is facing towards the room. If you push the inlet filter towards a wall, it wont have enough ventilation. 2) Keep the fan running on high instead of quiet mode. 3) Leave the adjustable vent upright and wide open as much as possible. My son loved to play with this so I slid a screw into the side of the vent to force it open. 4) Keep the room temp < 80 degrees. Hope this helps future consumers. Very quiet, works well Very easy to get it going, just plug it in. Very quiet, wasnt sure it was even on half the time. It traps alot of water, its important to keep the rear air filter very clean, otherwise the fan gets a bit hot. If its clean then its only slightly warm. Its just a bit heavier than I would prefer but maybe these things are all kind of heavy (or I am just getting old, more likely). Recommended. Really works. Very nice and Quiet Owned the CFM-40 for 1 month and am pleased of its performance. Its quiet enough to sleep beside the unit. Draws 290 watts and works well. Soleus Dehunidifier I have been through 2 Kenmore Dehumidifiers in three years to the tune of about $400.00. Disgusted with Sears, I turned to the reviews here on Amazon to shop for a new one. Because of the feedback on this site I went for the Soleus 40 pint model. Its been about two months and I am very impressed with this one. It is super quiet. I have it in the basement and empty it at least once a day. So far so good. great dehumidifier This is an excellent dehumidifier, with 2 design flaws. It runs very quietly, and does a superb job of removing moisture from the air. Also, it has an automatic defroster to keep the coils from icing up, which is an excellent feature. However, there are 2 things I dont like about it. The thing runs 24/7 regardless of whether or not its actually in the dehumidify mode. Granted, all thats actually running is the fan, but it seems like an electrical waste to me. A minor quibble. The second problem is the automatic drain. I strongly recommend its use. But to hook it up was a hassle. It uses a non-standard 15MM outlet, with a push-on connector. I ended up going to a hydraulic supply house and purchasing the hose from them. It wasnt cheap hose, but does work well. A standard garden hose screw connector would have been easier and cheaper. Overall, this is a superb unit, and you wont go wrong when you buy it. Just be aware of the 2 design flaws. Not reliable I have 2 of these Soleus units. They were great while they worked, but both stopped working after a little more than a year, within a couple months of each other. There is no reasonable repair option, either. Too Good to be True I purchased my Soleus Air 40 pint dehumidifier after reading the glowing reviews about it. The unit ran no more than 8 hours then completely stopped working. It is currently enroute for a refund. It really is quiet, since it does not run at all. It actually does have two drainage options... Ive only just installed this dehumidifier but wanted to correct a previous review in one small way: Once you punch out the plastic disk to insert a hose for external drainage, you neednt drain it that way forever. When you remove the hose, the water actually drips into the collection basin. I bought this unit with reservations about that one drawback but was delighted to find, after a hunch and a little experimentation, that its a non-existent drawback! Dehumdifier I think this unit is absolutely wonderful! It is fairly quiet and seems to be extremely efficient. Weve placed it in our finished basement (approx 1300 sq ft) and have noticed the musty smell has gone byebye. We were fortunate after reading some of the previous postings we werent one of the unfortunate who had to contact the company with problems, if so, this review might be quite different. However the unit itself has and is doing quite a terrific job of eliminating the previous unique basement aroma. It does warm the air which can be a plus. However, for some reason I have to unplug it after I empty the container to get it to work right again. Otherwise it will act like it is working and not pull any moisture out of the air. Seems to need some sort of reset after being emptied. It is a bit annoying but other than that it works well and is much quieter than any other dehumidifier I have heard. works well odd glithc It works great, pulls moisture out of the air and is very quiet. This dehumidifier is the quietest and lightest dehumidifier we have ever owned. As a woman, I have never been able to lift a dehumidifier alone--I have no problem with this one. We have it in our basement and it has run continuously for the last month. I would buy it again. Excellent choice! This dehumidifier is the quietest and lightest dehumidifier we have ever owned. Great buy! Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with HumidistatI purchased this dehumidifier in August. It arrived 2 weeks later (even earlier then scheduled), we put it down in our 1000 square foot basement and it works amazingly!!!! We had Kenmore before and it sounded like a tank and broke down shortly after we purchased it, this unit is very quiet and so far it works great! Yes, it fills up quicker than a 1000$ dehumidifiers but what can one expect of a 40 pint unit? I dont mind- It gives me a work out to go down my basement to dump the water. The basement feels very dry. So many people complained about a lack of instructions, I didnt need any, just plug in, set the setting (very simple) and let the dehumidifier do the work. So far I am very impressed and highly recommend this product!! I purchased this product after reading reviews, now Im a satisfied customer as well!!! Stunned I just bought this dehumidifier after taking a DeLonghi back to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart was great, the people at Delonghi couldnt care less that theirs is a piece of junk (read the Amazon reviews!). The Soleus is quieter, more efficient, better made and it does the job for less money. Had I read the reviews BEFORE purchasing, I would have tried this one! It is one of the best appliances Ive ever purchased and, if anything, its totally underrated. You cant go wrong.! Only Drawback is Small Receptacle for Water This is an excellent dehumidifier and competively priced with brand names that I know. I did a fair amount of research, this was the only brand with a good rating. So far (its only been about 1 month), this has lived up to its ratings. Good Product Good Price I researched a number of products. I needed something that could help my basement which is fairly large and was affordable. I found that in this product. I to looked at other reviews and people liked this product. apswws Works very well, very quiet even on high. The water bucket is a little hard to remove and empty, tends to spill because it is filled so close to the top, does not seem to be adjustable. Soleus dehunidifier--- very good Works as advertized, takes out lots of water, turns self off when full of water. Easy to empty. Soleus dehunidifier--- very good Works as advertized, takes out lots of water, turns self off when full of water. Easy to empty. Quiet and efficient I needed a dehumidifier for a basement space that I was going to use as an office. Lots of paper kept there so humidity was a definite no-no. This unit was highly rated and I can see why. You can hardly hear it in any of its modes and it has kept the humidity at below 50% easily. Ive got a hose connected which goes directly to a sump pump so emptying the unit is not something I can comment on. I highly recommend this unit. With a couple improvements, this would be a 5 star. I purchased the Soleus Air CFM-40 for use in a condo in Florida. I was impressed with its low noise as we could run the unit in the living room without bother to people who were listening to music, reading or watching TV. The Soleus is attractive, compact, ergonomic, and especially quiet. The Soleus Air had everything I was looking for in a small dehumidifier ... Except ... the humidistat can not be turned down below 50% and an interruption in electrical supply results in unit shut down. As we live in the South, we run our AC throughout the Summer months. Our AC unit removed sufficient moisture that the dehumidifier never turned on. Also if the electricity turns off for a brief amount of time, the unit will not self start. The unit defaults to power off and must be restarted manually. This would be a huge disadvantage to anyone who wants to set it and leave for the Summer season, as many do in sub-tropical climates. I decided to place the Soleus in the condo of a family member who is out of state for half the year. The little Soleus works well in this environment, and pulls out the excess moisture from the vacant condo. For my own place, I ended up purchasing a unit that is larger, less attractive, boxy, and noisier. It does, however have settings below 50%. Soleus would do well to include humidistat settings below 50% and provide a memory system to restart the unit if the power goes out. If the Soleus humidistat could be turned to 40% or 45% humidity, I would have kept it for myself. Unfortunately, I think I gave away the better unit, simply because it didnt work for me. Regards, DW With a couple improvements, this would be a 5 star. Regards, DW Works perfectly and is quiet. Ive had this unit in my basement for about 3 months - so far so good. Its easy to set up and use. I added a tube to drain directly into the floor as emptying the unit is laborious. I keep it on all the time and now my basement is nice and dry without the moldy smell like before. Very satisfied with this product. Delivers as promises Quiet. Doesnt put out much heat. Works well - Its full at least every other day, just from our master bedroom. Much, much easier to lift and move around compared to those standard beastly, dirty machines. Only drawback is that if you set the humidity level, the fan continues blowing even when the dehumidifier is off - this doesnt seem necessary and I dont know why the whole machine doesnt just go dormant. Basically I bought this dehumidifier (CFM- 40 E) for my two grand pianos. It really worries me when the humidity hits 60% or higher and pianos get out of tune very easily if you dont maintain a steady, friendly humidity level for the instruments. The model works very well in my 17x 12 room. Within 5 hours on continuous cycle with high power on, the humidity dropped from over 65% down to 50%. I have read reviews stated that even if the compressor shuts off, the fan will continuously run and it bothers some people. At least it didnt bother me and I hardly noticed any noise. I am very glad that I got this model. It is very effective, quiet, light-weight and stylish, too. One little thing: I wish the power cord could be longer. It is probably 5 feet or so, kind of short. I hope it will work for a long period of time. Maybe I will write another review next year around this time and see how this model works. Highly Effective Dehumidifier This dehumidifier has been really effective in keeping the humidity level down in the basement - it ran non-stop during the hottest, most humid days. Since I have had it only a month during the summer, I cant comment on its durability or its functionality in cold temperatures, but based on other reviews I expect it to be durable and work in colder temperature. Manufacturing defect Unit received timely and put in use. Upon first emptying of the water container, I noticed a hole that would have leaked water before reaching the full point. It was obviously a molding process imperfection and small enough to temporarily seal so that the unit could be used. The Company was contacted and quickly sent a replacement. The unit performs as stated and the humidity level is controlled well, (50%) at its lowest level. So far, so good... After a little better than one month, this product has done everything that it said it would do. Its quite. It does create a little heat, but thats a good thing in my case. Its in my basement, so a little heat is a desired by-product, which is a point I considered when choosing this brand & model. So far I am very happy with it. Wonderful Dehumidifier I bought an LG dehumidifier 2 years ago at Home Depot...and it just died without any warning in July 2007. What a God sent, the Soleus is so quiet, you dont know it is running. The old LG was very loud. I have my Soleus hooked up to my AC drain pump...so it works 24/7 without any human intervention. It will fill over two pails with water a day. I think I might buy another for the churchs food cupboard. Wonderful engineering. Thank you Amazon for the fast/free shipping as well. Soleus Dehumidifier This product works as advertised. It only adds a little heat to a room, but this is only problem on very hot days. I would like to see an energy saver feature allowing the product to turn it self off at preset humidity levels.Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat So far, so good... Great dehumidifier I usually dont fall in love with mechanical equipment, but I have fallen in love with this dehumidifier. After sufferering for a month with a Whirlpool that I bought at Lowes, I decided to take the plunge and try the Soleus. The difference is astounding. It is so quiet that I could not hear it in the same room (the basement) and when running continuously, I can keep a 1500 sq. ft. area at 40% humidity. It is twice as efficient as the Whirlpool, which I jilted. I love this thing...hope it keeps loving me for years to come. We have only been in a relationship for two months. Great product! The read the reviews of this dehumidifier and was greatly impressed. The reviews are accurate. The dehumidifier is exceptionally quiet. I replaced my 12 year old dehumidifier with this one and the progress the years have made is substantial. I can barely hear this dehumidifier running. Its also much lighter. The amount of water it removes from the air is substantial. I havent hooked it up to drain directly so I manually empty it twice per day. Each time its full. Im very pleased with this product. Excellent product I bought the Soleus dehumidifier after my old, VERY noisy one died. I bought it on the basis of all the customer reviews I read here. It is, as other people have said, unbelievably quiet. Even on High it makes very little noise. It also collects a full bin of water, about a gallon and a half, in about 6-8 hours in my basement. The bin is easy to remove and dump. My only complaint is that the logistics for using the continuous drain, which I would like to use, are not easy. It requires 15 mm inner diameter plastic tubing. My hardware store does not carry metric size tubing. So I now need to call around or check the Internet. The hardware store salesman suggested I call Medical supply places. Additionally, you have to cut out a round piece of plastic on the machines housing in order to insert the tubing on the little tube stub inside the machine. The instructions show what appears to be a wire cutter, but none of mine did the job. Despite these inconveniences I am very happy with the product. Soleus Dehumidifier Product works very nicely - requires frequent emptying (we have not directly linked it to the sink, we want to monitor how much moisture we actually have in the basement/laundry room). No complaints! Works great, right now. I searched high and low for a high quality dehumidifier that is quiet. It was a difficult task. The Soleus has recieved mixed reviews with most people raving about it and some saying it stopped working after a year. All the others dehumidifiers out there have terrible reviews and are extremely loud. So far the Soleus has been fantastic. It is very quiet and very easy to move around my basement. Setting it up was a breeze. My basement was dry within a week. Unfortunately the unit does not come with a hose to connect to a drain. Also making a permanent connection to a drain looks difficult. For now Im emptying the dehumidifier on a daily basis. If this dehumidifer has a long life I would highly recommend it. Time will tell. My basement feels drier already! by: jtroyce On: 2007-08-11 PURCHASE DECISION I bought this unit after I discovered some signs of mold growing on a wooden door slab in my basement. The numerous reviews on this website really helped in my decision as it is highly rated from many reviewers. INSTALLATION Installation was a breeze. I took it out of the box and had it running in about 2 minutes. PERFORMANCE In the first 20 hours, I estimate that it has removed about 8 liters of water from the air in my basement. It alreadys feels noticeably drier down there and I can finally close the door again without slamming it shut. DURABILITY Unsure. ENVIRONMENT The unit is not overpackaged. There is a single plastic bag covering the unit and four small styrofoam corner supports. Amazon ships this dehumidifier in its factory box, so there is only one cardboard box to recycle. I was a little disappointed that the unit is not Energy Star rated. In fact, there is no mention at all of it on the Energy Star product list. However, after some further research I think this unit would qualify for Energy Star status. Per this link: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=dehumid.pr_proc_dehumidifiers, you can see that a 40 pint dehumidifier should have an energy factor of at least 1.5 L/kWh. The Soleus consumes 330W of energy and removes 40 pints per day. 40 pints = 18.9 liters per day or 0.79 liters per hour. So the energy factor is 0.79 L/0.33kWh = 2.39 L/kWh--much higher than the Energy Star rating of 1.5 L/kWh. Quiet efficient dehumidifier After trying several well known brands of dehumidifier Soleus have to be ranked by far as the best, mainly due to the supremely quiet operation. I have been using the 25-pint model for years, and this 40-pint versions is my new addition. Now I wouldnt even consider purchasing another brand. The only down side to the brand is, another 25-pint unit I had failed after just two years of use. So I am not sure about reliability issues, still, at this price and with this quality of experience I am still a happy customer. More Than We Expected This dehumidifier is quiet and energy efficient. We travel a lot so we have a hose running directly to the sink...super convenient. Whisper quiet machine This is the 4th dehumidifier Ive owned in the 17 years Ive owned my home. I run a dehumidifier in the basement year round. It is by a long shot the quietest, even on high. The last one I had took a trip to the concrete garage floor because no matter what I did, it would rumble and shake and make a lot of racket (a Kenmore made by LG). I dont mind the bucket size of this unit being kind of small, I empty once a day and use the water for washing, on the lawn in the summer, etc. I love this machine! So far so good Had it for a few weeks and it is quiet (as advertised). I have set up the continuous drainage and left it on silent mode and it has run flawlessly so far. Gradually dripping water in to the drain of my laudry sink in the basement. Best Product I have found This is the best brand of dehumidier on the market as far as I am concerned. I have tried others, even the ones that claim "really quiet" mode or something to that affect. However even the ones that claim that still sound like a B52. However, the Soleus product lives up to the claim without a doubt. This product is working great and is so quiet that I have to stop to focus on it to see if it is still running. Great product - I hightly recommend it. I have owned two of the dehumidifiers from Soleus and will stick with this brand. very quiet! bought this dehumidifier after reading scores of dehumidifier reviews on various websites. this was the only one praised highly. It really is as quiet as promised. i am using it in a room far larger than recommended but it still does the job - just have to keep emptying it everyday. Only drawback is that is doesnt have a hose hookup. Good dehymidifier, if monitored If you are sure you will never have a power glitched (even a blip), then this dehumidifier may be for you. It works well, pulls moisture from the air, but the slightest interruption of power turns it off. I bought it to use on my boat WHEN I AM NOT THERE!!! Marina power sources are notoriously flickery, and it worked for 2 days before the powerhit turned it off. Damp boat. I probably should have realized that electronic meant power sensitive. I wish I had saved my Mummas old Sears on/off power button unit. Worked like a champ, 15 years after purchasing it. This thing goes on ebay. The unit stopped working after one month of operation. The unit stopped working after one month of operation. Even when it worked, its performance was weak at best (compared to another humidifier I have been using for a couple of years now). No need to say, I am very disappointed about this purchase. The unit stopped working after one month of operation. The unit stopped working after one month of operation. Even when it worked, its performance was weak at best (compared to another humidifier I have been using for a couple of years now). No need to say, I am very disappointed about this purchase. Very Limited Range of Control We bought this dehumidifier for my 84 year old mother who has breathing problems and requires low (35%) humidity. We were shocked to learn, upon receiving the dehumidifier, that it had ONLY 3 settings, for 50%, 60%, and 70% humidity. The machine turns off the compressor when the humidity gets down to 50%. If you are looking for dehumidification down to only 50%, then I would rate it a 5 -- a nice (smaller) machine, but not enough range if you really need dehumidification. It arrived promptly from Amazon with Prime 1 day shipping bought it last August and it already does not work We bought this product last year in August and it already does not work 11 months later. I hate to spend over $200. on a product that is not going to make it 12 months. While it was working, seemed to work well. So if you plan on buying a new one every year, go ahead. It may be worth spending more on something that lasts. All in all very good Very simply this is a very good product. It was the only model that was truly quiet. I find it very awkward to empty the water as there is no handle to hole on to. Also, the unit does pump out a good amount of heat and the fan never cycles off. Even with these "cons" I would absolutely recommend this unit silent, cool, and efficient This is whisper quiet, cool so Im not afraid it will burst into flames, and very efficient. I find I dont need to keep it running all the time, and when I do it does its job quickly, and gets the musty out without alot of delay. just in time for comfort in savannah, ga i read the reviews there was one negatuve the rest were positive. the difference was immediate .. easy to empty ..easy to move. delivery was great im obviously pleased. Good product: terrible customer service from Soleus If the unit is received in good working order and no physical defects, then I recommend the dehumidifier. If there are any defects in the unit upon receipt, then you are in for a real wrangle with Soleus customer service. just in time for comfort in savannah, ga i read the reviews there was one negatuve the rest were positive. the difference was immediate .. easy to empty ..easy to move. delivery was great im obviously pleased. 2nd try soleus The first Soleus that I received did not work at all. Wouldnt even turn on. The company was very good about helping me return the product and sending me a new one. The second one turned on but did not dehumidify. I tried all the settings but finally called the company again. They told me what it should be set at (it was not in the owners manual) It has worked like a charm ever since. Its very quite just as everyone has said. Does exactly what I wanted We purchased this dehumidifier last summer and used it all season. Weve been using it this season beginning last month, and it still works like a charm. I like it for several reasons. First, its very light for a humidifier, with a carrying handle which makes it easy to move from one room to another in our lower level. There are wheels, but I dont use them, since the weight of the unit is about the same as a medium size packed suitcase. My wife, who weighs a hundred pounds, uses the wheels. Second, its extremely quiet. The last dehumidifier we used (a Kenmore, admittedly much larger) was so loud we had to turn it completely off to hear the television. The Soleus has 3 fan levels, Medium, High and Quiet, with a light which indicates the setting. Quiet, as youd expect, is the lowest fan setting, but set on High the fan noise is not audible across a normal size room unless youre listening for it. Truthfully, there isnt much audible difference between Medium and High, so I leave it on High. Finally, its simple to set up and use. There are electronic controls for each function, each clearly labeled. You set a humidity level of Dry to Moist with an intermediate level in between, again with a light which indicates the setting. Theres also a setting to run continuously. I have no idea how accurate the humidistat is, or what is meant by Dry or Moist. We set ours on Dry, and after the first day there was a noticeable difference. The carpet is dry as a bone, the musty odor went away, and the room (a family room about 16 X 24) is comfortably dry. The manual says the unit can pull 40 pints of water a day from the air. I have no way to tell if this is true. The reservoir tank fills in our house about every eight to twelve hours on High and Dry settings. This obviously varies somewhat with the humidity outside, and how well your air conditioning works, etc. There is a simple float device which triggers a switch to shut off the unit just before the tank reaches capacity, which is about 12 pints, or about 1.5 gallons. A light indicates the reservoir is full (there is a water level indicator on the front, but I cant see it when the unit is sitting on the floor), and the unit shuts off. You grab the sides of the reservoir with your fingertips where the tank fits into the bottom of the unit and pull straight out, and there is a nice handle on top of the tank to carry the container to empty it out. Its a little heavier than a full gallon milk jug, and I easily carry it with one hand. My wife is quite small and she has no trouble carrying or emptying the tank. When you slide the empty tank back into the unit it sort of clicks into place, and the unit automatically starts running again. Very simple. Theres a hole in which to install a hose (not provided) for the unit to drain continuously, but we dont use it, finding the tank more manageable and less messy. Two things to keep in mind: One, the unit puts out heat because of its operation. Keep it in a vented place, and make sure the louvered vent on the top of the unit is open. The wider the opening the greater the discharge of heat. The heat output in our house, with the louver at its widest point, is about the same as running the air conditioner on fan in your car in summer, without the ac compressor running. In other words there is noticeably warm air venting out of the unit while its running. Its not warm enough to be any danger to children or pets, but it might increase the temperature slightly in a very small room, and certainly in an enclosed space such as a closet. And two, there is an air intake on the back of the unit with a simple air filter. The filter has to be removed and vacuumed periodically, or else no air can get through. Air is necessary for the unit to do its job properly, so you have to keep the filter clean. We do this about once a month, but we have a whole house filter on our furnace and air conditioner. The manual is quite clear and easily followed regarding set up, operation and maintenance. This is the best dehumidifier we have ever used. I just bought a second one to use in our bedroom. I have no idea how long they last, but were into our second season with no problems. I have seen reviews where the units reportedly did not work, or eventually malfunctioned, but weve never had a single problem. There is a one year warranty. Works like it should. I just received my dehumidifier a few days ago. It works like everyone here says it does. Meeting all expectations. It isnt going to solve world peace, but it keeps my clothes from smelling as they wait in the basement for me to do the wash - its perfect. Work great..so far Ive had the Soleus for about a month now. It works. When power goes out you have to manually restart the dehumidifier. Its fairly quiet. So far, so good! I was very thankful for the reviews on this product and we are very happy with our puchase. It is the quietest machine I have heard and it blows out fresh air. In the past the units we had, we couldnt hear ourselves talk over top of it. This machine is great! So far, so good! Soleus CFM 40 - Dehumidifier Ive only had the unit for a month but it is quiet and pulls plenty of water out. Im VERY pleased so far. The Whirlpool I had before worked OK for about 5 years but then quit dehumidifing even though it kept running. I was also VERY loud. Quiet! No more buzzing, blowing dehumidifers... This one is quiet, even on Hi. Good choice! amazingly quiet! I admit to being a skeptic when I read the reviews that said how quiet the unit was as I have suffered through many an hour of listening to my other dehumidifiers loud noises. This unit is truly quiet, and also efficient. My basement air is DRY now. The only hassle is that it does not come with a hose for continuous drainage and the size needed seems a bit difficult - 15 mm inside diameter. Right now I am emptying the unit but will try to find a hose to fit soon. I highly recommend this unit if you want a quiet, efficient dehumidifer. Quiet! No more buzzing, blowing dehumidifers... This one is quiet, even on Hi. Good choice! Keeps my house from 41% to 50% I use the dehumidifier for my Concert Grand Piano since I have to keep the environment between 45% to 50% to prevent oxidation of the strings. The Soleus bucket fills up every other day. I did not realize how much moisture is floating in the air. quiet I purchased this dehumidifier because of all the reviews of how quiet it was. It is very quiet compared to my previous dehumidifier and sometimes think it is time to dump the water becasue I cant hear it running. I did not do a good job researching the capacity. 40 pints sounded big but it is 2/3 the capacity of my previous dehumidifier and am having to empty the tank every other day. We are planning to connect the tubing to have it empty outside. Machine stops working after 1 year and a half I purchased this in Sep. 2005 after reading the reviews. When it worked, it was fine, pull water and quiet. But it suddenly stopped working. The customer service said the price fixing it is similar as buying a new one because they have only 1 year warranty and no extended warranty even you are willing to buy it. So I wouldnt recommend it to any one unless you expect to buy a new one after only a year and a half! I bought this unit about two months ago when we experienced heavy rains in New Jersey. My sump pump got jammed and we had a little flood in my basement. This is my third dehumidifier. The other two died after a few years. I actually purchase a Whirlpool dehumidifier at Lowes but it was rather noisy and didnt seem to pull the water from the air. I than ordered this unit because of the great reviews. And I am glad I did. What a difference from the Whirlpool which I did return. It is super quiet and I think it will work great in the winter when my basement is cold. I have yet to hook up a hose so every day it seems I go down and empty the container. I will probably hook it up soon. Hopefully this one will last longer than the previous two I had. LJ, Lexington KY A little more expensive that most dehumidifiers offered on amazon. Well worth the extra $$ if noise is an issue. The quite mode makes less noise than a box fan on low. Its not rated as an "Energy Star" product but the specs show that is actually uses less energy to run. Glad that we did a little research before purchasing one. Satisfied Customer Product arrived much sooner than expected and is working very well. It operates much quieter than the one it is replacing and has more optional controles. There is also a window to check the water level. I would recommend it. Great, but I like the smaller one! I bought the 25 pint model and think that it is the way to go (rather than the 40 pint). The 40 pint wont do a better job of pulling the moisture, it just will take longer before you have to empty it out. Believe me, a full 25 pint tank is tough enough to carry to dump out... I think the 40 pt would be really hard to handle! During the really humid months (about 10 out of the 12 here in Houston!) I empty it each morning and evening... its usually only about 1/2 full (which makes it easier to empty) but usually it can go for 24 hours without needing to be emptied. I have two of the 25 pint models and love them! As everyone mentions they are very quiet but the biggest downside is that if you have a power outage (or surge) they do not come back on by themselves. Sort of a pain if you forget to go take care of that! If you were using this in a basement it would be a major pain. But aside from that I love having these dehumidifiers! Theres a real satisfaction every time you empty the tank and realize that excess moisture would have otherwise been in the house. Excellent design and whisper quiet !!!!!!! Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat WOW! I cant tell you how difficult it was for me to for me to find a quiet dehumidifier. This unit has it all. Its whisper quiet, it sucks water out of the air like a sponge, its small, its very nice looking and uses only 330 Watts. Tell me, what more could you ask?? I put this unit in my living room and it covers a total of 4 rooms/700SqFt perfectly. Within a period of about 6 weeks, before I bought this unit, I tried a Frigidaire Frigidaire FDL601P 60-Pint Portable Dehumidifier and a DeLonghi DE500P Dehumidifier - 50 Pint with Condensate Pump. They were both much larger, very loud and drew twice the power of the Soleus unit. As an engineer, I really appreciate a well designed and manufactured product. Clearly, this is one worthy of such praise. Almost all other dehumidifiers follow the same model, big, boxy, loud, and for the most part, primitive in design. The Soleus is different. Their folks sat down with a clean sheet of paper a designed a terrific product. Ive had mine for 3 weeks and wouldnt want to do without it. I tried hard to buy this locally, on Long Island, NY, but no chance. I bought mine online from a retailer in Oregon...they were great. Quiet and efficient After years of listening to my Whirlpool squeak and squawk, I purchased a Soleus from Amazon. Like many, I tried to gather as much information as I could, before I purchased. Am I ever glad that I made the plunge. For a very reasonable price, I got a dehumidifier that is quiet and works well. I would have given it 5 stars, except Im not thrilled with their design for removing the water reservoir. Just not as user-friendly as I have had. I do, however, like the removable filter and hope that in the long run, it will keep the coils clean. Ive had the product for a month and am very pleased. Great so far Ive only had it running 24 hours so far, but Im really impressed with this unit. Its the quietest dehumdifier Ive ever seen, and seems to be doing a good job of pulling the moisture out of the air. The hose hookup is a little unfriendly; you have to cut the end of your hose off, and slide it over the drip port. I used a cable clamp to be sure it doesnt get yanked off. A great unit for the price. a good buy This is the first dehumidifier that I have had so I dont have a lot of comparison. But, I am so far very impressed. I have had the unit for over a month now and I am amazed at the difference it makes in the comfort level of my partial basement. It is very quiet and seems to be rather efficient. It is not too heavy or big for the space that I have and is much more pleasing to look at than all of the other brands that I researched. I would at this time highly recommend this unit for basic needs in around 800 sq. ft. And I would if it maintains its integrity purchase another one. Soleus CFM-40 I like it very much. It replaces an old Sears which was twice as expensive and twice as heavy, but about half as good. Compact but Efficient Thesmall unit out performs many larger units and is well worth thw cost. It does have one drawback however and that is emptying the container. It requires some care so not to spill the contents. Does its job efficiently, quietly and with style Much better than any other dehumidifier I have ever used. Easy to use (including moving it), quiet and efficient. A winnter. Wow - Quiet! Id read reviews here and elsewhere about this being a quiet dehumidifier, and kind of thought - Yeah its probably somewhat quieter than a lot of the obnoxious other ones, which would be good. But I totally underestimated it! You can barely hear this unit running, even on the highest setting. It is light-years ahead of a lot of the old technology ones out there. Wow - Quiet! So Far Fantastic I bought this unit a couple of months ago and so far, I couldnt be happier. At the dry setting, the unit has to be emptied every 24 hours. Keep in mind that I have a couple of indoor fountains but it works out well because I just recycle the water by putting it back into fountains. The air definitely feels drier. Ive got severe mold allergies and the unit has made what I believe to be a very significant difference as mold does not grow in low humidity environments. I breath a lot better. The Soleus unit also allows us to save money on electricity by keeping the thermostat set higher during the day as the low humidity makes a slightly higher air temperature much more tolerable. Since the unit consumes such little power, the benefits have been enormous. Overall, Ive been extremely happy and would highly recommend getting a Soleus. Well see what kind of energy savings we get when summer rolls around here in Houston, but so far, the cost of the unit looks like it will more than repay itself in terms of reduced electricity usage from the energy hog of everyones home--central air. Get one!! A good choice Ive only been using this unit a week but already its performance exceeds that of my former unit. Lightweight and quiet, it wrings moisture out of the air in my basement even at the default setting. It is reasonably attractive and could easily be used in a bedroom or other living space because it makes very little noise and isnt obtrusive. If you need a medium duty dehumidifier I think you will like this model. A good choice Ive only been using this unit a week but already its performance exceeds that of my former unit. About 5 years ago our old "workhorse" Whirlpool dehumidifier gave out. Id been so happy with it, I bought another one. BIG MISTAKE. We turned it on and it sounded like we had a freight train in the basement. I tried taking it back to Lowes but no luck. "They are just loud". So we put up with it for 3 years. Last year my wife said "enough". So I searched the web and found the Soleus unit. Who ever heard of Soleus? Not me, but I kept coming back to the reviews. Finally I figured Id wasted more money than this over the years so if it didnt work as advertised, Id just start over again. Big Suprise. The last 6 months have been a dream. Id been running it a month when my wife asked "when are you going to turn it on?" She could not believe that it had been running all that time and she didnt know it. It just keeps chugging along. The plastic door doesnt bother me at all. I ordered in from Quality Counts amd could not have been happier with their service. Great unit and it is everything the reviews said it would be. Nice and quiet unit. A Pain to empty though Last summer my Kenmore Dehumidifier (after 3 years of use) started to freeze up on its own. I tried everything I could (cleaning out the unit, etc) but just decided to buy a new one. I read great reviews on the Soleus unit, and have read terrible reviews on almost every other major brand dehumidifier. I thought...why not, give it a try. The unit itself is nice and quiet. The fan is barely noticable compared to my insanely loud Kenmore. Also the units controls are nice and simple. My only complaints are that the water collecting bucket is a little difficult to empty. It needs a better handle than the side one that is supplied. Also the unit does not turn on by itself after a power outage. Besides those 2 things, it dehumidifies great. Pulls the advertised moisture of of the air and is not that big of an energy hog. Nice and quiet unit. Extremely quiet and effective This Soleus dehumidifer comes with 3 different fan speeds, and even on the high fan setting it is very quiet. My basement is approximately 1,500 square feet, and within four hours the relative humidity dropped from 60% to 54% with the humidity setting on low. Quiet equipmet This is my first dehumidifier so I can not compare it to any prior experience. So far I love it; my main concern was to be sure its quiet enough for me to be able to use it at anytime, which it is. The dehumidifier has a quiet mode that makes it sound no louder than a fan. I never noticed any humidity in the basement, but I still have to empty the water from the container usually once a day, I guess that means its working. I have NOT tried the "full" mode yet (supposedly it starts beeping and stops the dehumidifier until its water container is emptied) because I normally empty out the container at the end of the day. I have three rooms in my basement and unfortunately I have to move the dehumidifier around once a day to make sure all three rooms are dry, not too heavy though. Soleus Air CFM-40 Review This was the third dehumidifier I ordered over the Internet. The other two were from nationally known companies; both worked fairly well but were very noisy. The Soleus unit is more compact than the others (same capacity) and is so quiet I have to check to make sure it is running. Im extremely pleased with its moisture removing capabliity - it has solved a critical problem I had with water pooling on wood surfaces near windows. I would not hesitate to recommend this product to others. This is the one to buy If you need a dehumidifier in you home, than there is no question in my mind, this is the one to own, and used every day. First of all, its beautiful, and that means something. There are no sharp corners, all the edges have been rounded. What this tells you is that the functional design inside was also thought about on the outside. It required a minimum amount of time to put together, and this could easily be done by someone who is not handy. Although the price is not cheap, it is comprable to what is out there on the market. When I took the time to examine what the mass retailers had for sale, I was extremely please that this product by Soleus was my final choice. It clearly does the job, and basically is almost soundless. What little sound it does emit, is not bothersome. This means I am willing to tell you that you can put it in any room in your house, and even your bedroom where you sleep. It will not disturb you. I have owned it for several months now, and continue to be pleased with its performance. It is on all the time. The best thing you can ask about any product is whether or not the consumer would be willing to buy it again. The answer is yes I would, because I purchased a second one a few months after owning the first one. Both are performing admirably. Only time will tell as to the long-term reliability of both machines. I would add that they are also beautiful to look at. The construction quality is excellent. The buttons are easy to used, and understand. Soleus has built a knock me out product, and I couldnt be more pleased with owning it. Try it, before you buy any other brand, try this one. Good luck. Richard Stoyeck Efficient and very quiet! If you are looking for a dehumidifier that is quiet, your search has ended! This is the quietest dehumidifier out there. Very efficient and easy to use. I live in a humid climate all year around. My house is damp and in the winter makes the house seem colder in the winter. So far, it has improved the quality of air in the house tenfold. The rooms seem to have the same pleasant climate throughout the house. Really looking forward to the hot and humid weather to see if this baby performs just as good during the summer. Highly recommend! Avoid Soleus! Defective units, fictional customer service! This company is one to avoid. After reading postiive reviews which I now believe to have been planted by the company and its marketing folks, I ordered one. After waiting for the supposedly back ordered CFM-40, we were delighted when it arrived and we installed it in the basement. For the first few days it worked really well, then started to lose its ability to pull water from the air. The manual suggested cleaning the filter, which we did - though it appeared not to be dirty. A day or so later the unit stopped working entirely. Contacting Soleus cusomter service was an ordeal, but finally a technician called and we went through some steps on the phone. He said theyd send a replacement unit, but that wed have to pay to ship ours back to Soleus. We did so. The new unit, identically to the first, failed a few days after it arrived. That was more than a month ago - and now Soleus customer service no longer lists a telephone number, and doesnt respond to e-mails. Anyone who buys a product from this company is taking a huge risk. Recommend highly, especially if quiet is important. Well worth the $$$ Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40 pint dehumidifier w/humidistat This dehumidifier has saved our basement. We have a lot of moisture, but now it is almost gone. We are very pleased with this product Great dehumidifier! We reviewed every dehumidifier web site out there and chatted with a few vendors before committing to the Soleus. Its worked well for us -- quiet enough for the bedroom and portable enough to move into different rooms as necessary. The price of the portabilty, though, is having to empty the canister every other day. Otherwise...its a great machine. Excellent performance and so quiet I bought one of these to try it out and was so impressed I bought the company (Sorry, that was the Remington guy wasnt it). I meant to say I was so impressed I bought another one. Portable, easy to use and very efficient. The quiet setting really is very quiet indeed. Both run constantly and have proven to be good investments. Light years ahead of the others I will join one of the other reviewers in apologizing for being compelled to praise a dehumidifier. However, when our loud old humidifier finally died, I spent many frustrating trips buying and returning louder replacements (think of a 747 jet at take-off) dehumidifiers to various big-box stores. Then I found this. It is quieter (I guess maybe 30-40db), as efficient, and smaller than anything else we could find on the market. When I plugged it in, I frankly did not think it was running - as it was that quiet. Despite its silent running it filled the bucket faster than any other one I had tried. It is also more energy efficient that the other standard brands. Even if the bucket empties slightly different than standard dehumidifiers, it could hardly be more simple. Ours has performed flawlessly for 18 months. I do agree there is an inconvenience when one has to return larger items like this from mail order and not a store. However, making returns to Home Depot or Lowes is no picnic either these days. But in this case, I would urge folks to take the chance if you cannot find it elsewhere. I would say if you have no concern about the noise, one could go with other models. However, if you have to live in proximity to the dehumidifer - this model ought to be at the top of your list. While I am disappointed (and would remove a star or two if Amazon would let reviewers do that), I have to say it was very good when it worked. I have replaced it with a more traditional noisy dehumidifier, since I cant afford to buy a humidifier every year and a half. The new one works fine, but I admit that I do miss the quiet of the Soleus. Epilogue (July 2009) The noisy replacement (Danby) died in January 2009 (to their credit they provided a full refund). I had hated the loud noise of the Danby, so I gambled again on the Soleus. I decided NOT to revise my prior review until I had 6 months of operation on the Soleus to report on. So far it has worked flawlessly filling a full pan of water every 24 hours, sometimes faster. It is still whisper quiet. One change I have made, is to be sure to turn it off when the relative humidity gets low, i.e. I dont run it if in a 24 hour period I dont see water collecting in the pan. Given my jinx with dehumidifiers, I did something I never ever do, I bought an extended warranty for it. So knock wood, I once again have a functioning dehumidifier, and one that can be in the same room we me and I can still hear the TV or stereo. I did a lot of research and thought this product would solve my problem. It was fine until it stopped working after 1.5 months of use. Soleus Air customer service agreed that I had received a defective product. They would replace it, but only when I returned the defective (heavy) unit at my own cost. I was rather surprised as we all agreed this unit was defective. The person I spoke with sugggested I write an email to "management" requesting my shipping be paid. I did but have had no response and its been 2 weeks. I have a dehumidifier on its way to me, but they are holding my VISA number until I return the defective one. What a disappointing purchase and experience with a company. Excellent Dehumidifier: Quiet, Efficient, Compact I think I have purchased nine dehumidifiers over the past ten years since I have them in three locations and they just dont seem to last. I started with the Whirlpool units and was very disappointed with their quaility. They were loud, had a horrible bucket design and a crude connection for hose drainage. When they broke after a few years, I replaced them with Maytag dehumidifiers. The Maytags were better designed but the fan was very loud and they too broke within two or three years. I replaced two of them with an LG and a Frigidaire which are nothing special. The other I replaced with a Soleus CFM-40. I know its hard to get excited about a dehumidifier but this one is about perfect. It is extremely quiet (even on the highest fan setting, you have to stand next to it to hear it run). It is about half the size of the other dehumidifiers Ive owned and uses about half the energy as well. It is well designed and appears very well made with good quality plastics. This unit is in my 1,500 sq/ft basement and it has no problem keeping the humidity level at around 50%. Time will tell if it can last longer than the others but based on other reviews I am optimistic. I waited too long for this My old de-humidifier lasted almost 30 years. So naturally I didnt know what to expect. Well was I surprised to find that de-humidifiers are quiet now, and the cooling tubes dont freeze over when the temp gets lower. Its easy to empty as well I definitely recommend this for any room Effective! The machine does all it says it will do. It is lightweight, quiet and very effective. We are very happy with this purchase. Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint I am amazed at the amount of water it pulls from the air. I am happy with the product. I also bought a 25 pt. Excellent product, horrible customer service This product is by far superior to anything else on the market. It is easy to use, it has a sleek design, and best of all it quietly operates. My only reason for not awarding this product five stars is because the customer service is very poor. I had trouble with the second dehumidifier I bought, and found it very difficult to reach a customer service representative. The phone lines were busy, I left numerous voice mails that were not returned, and my contact via email was not responded to as well. Hopefully, the product is sound enough that you dont have to contact customer service. Excellent product, horrible customer service This product is by far superior to anything else on the market. However, had no issues after delivery. The unit works well and is quiet. Attaching a drain hose means knocking out a plastic hole permanently. The humidity settings are fixed at continuous operation, low, medium and high humidity. Would have been nice to have the option to set a humidity level. Make sure you leave enough room around the unit for it to draw in air. Im very pleased and would highly recommend. Very quiet I first bought a whirlpool dehumifier because our rented apartment was so damp that we had to put our towels in the dryer after every use. It was so loud with lots of vibration noises that we took it back. After lots of research we bought the Soleus and its been great - its very quiet even on a hard floor, it had no trouble drying our 400sq ft apartment and being able to direct the dry air flow means you can point it into damp cupboards /at damp walls /clothing etc. The only downsides are that it does not turn back on after you lose power (we have lots of power cuts) and I would prefer a clear bucket to see when it needs emptying (the small clear strip it has is very difficult to see through). Works great This is our first and only dehumidifier, and is kept in our very damp basement. At the time we got the dehumidifier, our unfinished cement basement had wet spots which had formed during the very large rainstorms we had in MA earlier this year. The wet spots were not drying up on their own after months of waiting. We had never had this problem before and were not sure what we should do. It has been very effective in reducing the humidity in our ~700 sq ft. basement from 90+% to a very comfortable 60% (although it took about a week to break 80% due to our wet floors, I assume). It is extremely quiet. I cannot hear it when I stand at the top of the basement stairs; I have to walk downstairs to see if the red light is on or not. We have to empty it twice a day. My biggest concern before buying this product was exactly how awkward or difficult it was to empty the container - people really seemed put off by it in some reviews. But I have had no trouble at all emptying it. You have to lift the container up just a little to get it onto the tracks, but then it slides right out without any trouble. Someone else mentioned this as well: it does significantly raise the temperature of the room. Our basement is now 5 degrees warmer than it was before (was usually 65 deg, now is 70 deg). We run it in continuous mode. My only negative comment about this product is its short electric cord (~6 ft). Does it's work quietly. We just use it in our basement, but you could use it in a bedroom if you wanted to - very quiet. Its also easy to put a hose on and have it drain automatically - no emptying the bucket. Highly recommended. Works like a charm! This machine delivers everything it promises. It operates quiet does not produce too much heat and is very effective in dehumidifying. Using it in hour basement we have to empty the collection bin once a day now that it is in continuous operating mode. Emptying is easy. Recommend this product GREAT! Marvelous engineering. Whisperquiet. Has only one flaw, a big sticker in front which does not come off like it should and leaves gunk on the device. Why do manufacturers do this? GREAT! Marvelous engineering. Whisperquiet. You have to cut out a tab to access the external drain and also cut a garden hose to use as piping. Also, as mentioned in other reviews, the unit does not automatically restart after the power goes off and the fan is always going, regardless if it is actually dehumidifying. I decided, just before the summer heat started, to buy only one air conditioner for my bedroom and a dehumidifier for the living room to provide some comfort. Believe it or not it works great! At least this brand does. My living room has 10 ceilings and is approximately 400 square feet (including a kitchen.) The room is still warm especially when the temperature reaches 80, but there is no discomfort. The only down side is the warm air released by unit. The living room cools off as long as I have my Vornado fan (best fan in the world) blowing cool air from the bedroom to living room. Great For NYC Apartments! Don't waste your time with the other brands I tried a Haier 65 pint and it was louder on its low setting than this one is on its high setting. The Haier also started short-cycling after about 5 days of operation. After that bad experience, I spent a couple of hours reading every review of dehumidifiers I could find, and decided to go with the Soleus based on the fact that it was supposed to be the quietest. WHAT A HUGE IMPROVEMENT over the Haier! I would give this model 5 stars, but it has these "deficiencies" when compared to other models: 1. No temperature and humidity display. Ok, I agree, it doesnt affect the operation, but its one of those things I did like about the Haier. Granted, on the Haier, all the display did was show me that the thing stopped working. 2. The hose connection needs to be punched out and is not a threaded connection for a garden hose, although my garden hose slips over the connection just fine when I cut off the hose end. 3. The unit does not return to "on" after power goes out. I really wanted this feature so that I could put the unit on a timer to run for x hours every day. 4. Its not Energy Star rated. It is only 330W though, which is much less than other similarly sized models. In summary: Dont waste your time with all the other models available. The Soleus works fine and I cant hear it in the next room even when the fan is on HI. PS: Look around and you may find a deal like I did. I paid just 139 at a big box. Works well I purchased this dehumidifier for mainly basement use, but wanted one quiet enough for use upstairs if needed. And, boy is this thing quiet. My refrigerator is louder. I also own a Fedders 45 pint unit and a Whirlpool 65 pint noise maker. The Fedders (Maytag) was the quiet champ untill I purchased the Soleus Air CFM-40E. The Whirlpool removes an amazing amount of water, but can be heard UPSTAIRS when running in the basement. So it is used only when needed. The Soleus Air is so quiet I have to go down the basement stairs and visually check to see if the unit is on. Cant say that for many dehumidifiers. My only complaint is that the fan is always on, even when it has reached the set humidity level. This prevents the short cycling the others do, on for 2 minutes off for 2 minutes or so, but I think prevents an Energy Star certification. At 2.9 amps it draws significantly less than the Fedders 5.6 amps and the Whirlpools 7.9 amps. The Soleus Air works great (so far) upstairs in the spring, when it is cool but damp, like the weather this week. Here in Wisconsin it is in the 60s but rainy, so the house is humid. Running the central air is not necessary since the house is not hot. So I use a dehumidifier, which makes the house seem less clammy. I would recommend the Soleus Air CFM-40E to anyone who is looking for a small, really quiet, relatively light, medium capacity (40pint) dehumidifier that simply does what is supposed to do (remove water from air) with out excess noise. Great machine! It sucks up the moisture restoring my books to their former (drier) glory. Wish the water pan were a little easier to handle. Great machine! It works great. 40 pints refers to the amount of moisture it pulls out of the air, not the size of the reservoir. The fan does create a bit of air flow which can cause some "wind chill", but air circulation is overall a good thing. When enclosed in the bathroom overnight, it also does a great job of drying hand laundry! Sucks all moisture out of the air to make living space nice and dry! My apartment had a moisture problem; whenever it rained, my apartment seemed damp, and whenever anybody showered, the towels stayed wet for days. Soon, our closets were damp and we had to throw out many precious belongings that we couldnt salvage. I bought this dehumidifier in January, and our apartment has been blissfully dry since. We leave it running on all the time for maximum dryness, and we dump buckets of water each day. It works very well, and sucks all moisture out of the air, making our apartment much warmer and livable. It is also very quiet, not loud like an air conditioner like I thought it would be. I hardly notice the hmm that it makes while its on. I highly recommend this dehumidifier! Sucks all moisture out of the air to make living space nice and dry! This is the first dehumidifier weve owned, so Im relying on the opinion of the other reviewers on how much quieter it is than other models. Weve had ours for a few weeks now, and it is quiet - no louder than our computer. It removes the water very well, with no leaking. The only problem for us is this, and it would probably be true with any dehumidifier, but just beware: We bought this because humidity aggravates my sons eczema (skin rash). We had been lowering the air conditioner at night to knock the water out of the air, and so I thought we would be able to raise the air temperature while still achieving the same level of comfort with the dehumidfier (any maybe save on the electricity bill). But I didnt realize how warm the air coming out of the dehumidifer would be (when the compressor is running). It raises the temperature upstairs (where we use it) by 2-3 degrees, so I have to lower the air conditioner down again to compensate! Oh, well. Hopefully the low energy consumption of the dehumidfier will at least make it a nearly-break-even endeavor, as far as the utility bill goes! Works great! by: btdenyer On: 2005-11-01 I installed this unit in my basement about 8 months ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since. Things I noticed: If the power goes out, the unit will NOT turn back on automatically (as some other units do.) If you want to use the continuous drainage (which I highly recommend) via a hose, you have to punch out a plastic disc on the side of the unit. I would have designed a screw-type plug that was replacable, but they didnt think of that. Anyway, once you punch the quarter-size disc out its out forever. If you choose to use the continuous drainage feature, you will need to pick up a hose with an inner diameter of 15mm (.59" or just over half an inch.) I went to the local DIY center and found some clear tubing that has worked well. The unit can operate down to 2-degrees C (36-degrees F), which will be great for continuous operation in the garage to keep the tools from rusting. Has three fan settings: med, high and quiet. "Quiet" really is quiet, and could probably work just fine in a bedroom. Though, it does warm the room its in. How much it warms it depends on the humidity setting. Four settings: The humidty level (humidstat) can be set to "continuous dehumidification" (which is the default setting), 50%, 60% and 70%. The fan will continue to run but the dehumidification processor will turn off when it reaches the selected humidity level. Cool. I mean, thats when the fan will just blow room-temp air. A full drainage tank will stop the unit and illuminate a "tank full" indicator light. The unit is not that heavy -- maybe for some, but not nearly as heavy as some people make it sound. Its 30.8 pounds. According to the instructions: You will need at least 21 cm (about 8 inches) of clearance in front, behind and side to side. Air blows out of the top of the unit, so youll need to make sure its clear as well. There are movable louvers on the top to direct the air straight up, 45-degrees or almost straight ahead. Power consumption: CFM-25E is 220W // CFM-40E is 330W I highly recommend this model dehumidifier. ***15-month UPDATE: It is still working like a champ! We havent had one single problem with it, and I dont foresee ever really having one in the near future. Ive been running this thing nonstop and it has only required me to clean the filter on the back (which takes 5 minutes.) It has remained as quiet as the day I bought it. Its awesome! Muy Buen producto este aparato es excelente me ayudo a quitar la maldita humedad de mi cuarto ya que estaba acabando con mis cds y dvds es muy bueno ademas es muy facil de usar altamente recomendable Quiet, No Leaks, Looks Great The 40 pint reservoir is fantastic - I only need to empty the container once daily. Removing and reinserting the reservoir is simple. No leaks. Even if I put the unit on "High" the noise is less than with most small fans. On "Quiet" I can barely hear the unit from 5 feet away. The unit also looks great. Simple controls. Its about the size of an old electric typewriter case turned upright. Excellent balance of efficiency and effectiveness I currently have 5 dehumidifiers in different locations, and this one is the strikes the best balance of efficiency, reliability, effectiveness, and quietness. There are other models that can pull more moisture out of the air more quickly, but they are invariably much louder and MUCH more expensive to run.
