![]() Aquasana AQ-4000 Countertop Water Filter By: Kirkland Average Rating: 3.0 Total Reviews: 37 More Information Horrible experience After struggling with this system for five years, I give up. The caps holding the filters in place never, ever unscrew without a struggle or a neighbors help. This time, its over. My neighbor, an iron worker couldnt remove them, and of course again the flimsy level on the caps broke. Im over Aquasana and on to finding another filter system. Its a terrible design. faulty valve I have soaked the valve in vinegar as suggested, but it doesnt help. The valve sticks open. Poor design, dont waste your money. Not Durable I bought one of these Aquasana Countertop Filters about two years ago to replace a Pur Countertop Water Filter which I had used for many years. I switched brands only because Pur stopped making the Countertop Filter. Im sorry to report that this Aquasana just suffered a catastrophic failure this morning -- water started gushing out of the plastic case, and I found that the base of the case had split, just below where one of the filters attaches. Thats pretty pathetic for a product Ive used for only two years. Clearly the company needs to use higher-grade plastic in the manufacture of this unit. So -- I no longer recommend the Aquasana, and I am now trying the 10-Year Countertop Filter available at Hammacher-Schlemmer. Its less expensive than the Aquasana, and because "10-Year" is in the name of the product, I can count on Hammacher to replace it if it fails during that period. OUTSTANDING!!! This is now the second Aquasana water filter that I have owned and I will buy nothing else. This system works great and produces some of the best water I drink and it makes water much cheaper than buying it. The filter only needs to be changed every 6-months or so depending upon your use. I used to buy straight from the company but now do it via Amazon to save on shipping. don't waste your money Ive bought this system and replacement filters to last me for a while. When my unit arrived, Ive placed it into storage to be installed at a later date. Big mistake, because now I cant return it even though the unit has never been used. After hooking up the unit, one of the filters leaked. I ordered some new rubber rings and replaced them. When I lifted up the unit to look underneath it if the filters still leaked, the whole inside of the housing just came loose, fell into the sink and the little pipe that links the two filters broke on one end. Now I have to order a new housing. The housing shell doesnt lock properly into the base, the whole design is flawed, the plastic is cheap and soft, I bet there is not a single unit out there thats gonna make it for the long run...BEWARE of the 5-star ratings for this item - most of them are written by the same person! Same sentences, just twisted around, same pattern. At this time I cannot recommend another product, but my advice is to stay away from this piece of junk! UPDATE: They did send me a brandnew unit, a gesture that I appreciate, but the housing still doesnt lock properly into the base, so I applied some scotch tape to hold the whole shebang together... Horribly Designed I LOVED this water filter - until I had to replace the filters. Not only are they expensive, but the housing is made of plastic. While attempting to change the filters the PLASTIC screw that holds everything together broke. This product will not stand the test of time. [...] Great system, but impossibly bad design for filter changes It is so sad about the Aquasana, if it wasnt for the unbelievably bad design, with the cheap, brittle plastic, which makes for changing filters to be a nightmare, I would rate it a 5. After changing filters 4 times, and being on the filter 4 life program, I have HAD it with change number 5. All four of the prior filter changes on my counter top model have been nightmares. I have broke the housing twice and now with this fifth one, I cant get on of the filter Caps open, I give up. It is too much. Even if you CAN get the filter caps off, then there might be the problem of NOT being able to get a filter OUT. The cheapo cable lines to the sink are a real hassle, but after a couple of years, I have gotten to understand how to make the terrible design work. The cheap brittle plastic house is guaranteed to fail when changing filters. If not after six months, then on the second time. It is just so cheap, not enough room to get leverage with ones hand to do anything. I have seen that there is a new recommendation on how to lub the O-Ring. Now they recommend silicon, before, and on lots of other sites, that have documentation, vegetable oil is recommended. As I NOW understand, not be a "handyman", that using vegetable oil as a lubricant for the O-Ring, (really a large rubber washer), is NOT meant for any type of long term lubrication, especially on cheap, brittle, plastic. The vegetable oil oxidizes very quickly during use and can polymerizing to a plastic-like consistency. In other words, YOU CANT UNSCREW THE FILTER CAPS AS THE OIL AND PLASTIC HAVE BONDED. I learned this from a plumber. In general, to have threading on cheap, brittle plastic is a terrible idea, as anyone who has tried the most basic plumbing knows. Turn too hard, it breaks or keeps going round and round. If they used better materials, and designed the housing better, it would be totally different. The support, which started out great, is now terrible. Not only have I given up on the removal of the old filters, but it looks like Aquasana has as well. I dont get responses anymore. They are sick of the problem as well. After the "use pliers", keep under warm water, etc stuff, the new solution for them is to purchase a ratchet set......Nope, I dont think so and if it does open, will I get the filters out anyway ???? If you browse the web, you will read hundreds of stories just like mine, many from those who used to be distributors for Aquasana, but were losing money by having to sent out, new housing to their customers, as well as dealing with the complaints. If it is connects, it works well and is the most economical way to go, BUT ...after the first six months are over and you have to deal with changing the filters, it becomes virtually useless. I am looking for a new system and are examining a few of them. But, my search is centered more on long term costs, now that I understand this better. Jon Stay away... same bad experiece as lots of others Worked well for about 2 years and then the filter housing cracked like has happened to so many others if you search the web. Fortunately, we noticed it right away and although we had a mess to clean up, no permanent damage. I called to get the housing replaced and was told that if I signed up for the automatic 6 month filter replacement they would do it for free... otherwise $40 to replace the (obviously defectively designed) housing. Current filters where only about 8 months old, and were very clean, so it wasnt a clogging issue... which the housing should be sturdy enough to deal with, anyway. Were going to junk it and look for something better. BTW, we had the under-the-counter version, not the counter-top (which isnt any different with regards to filter housing). AquaSana utilizes misleading websites to promote their product I purchased this product last year, primarily because I saw the product listed on what I thought was an unbiased website which listed quite a few water filter devices. [...]. This website is run by AquaSana but no where on the site does it explain that. Anyway, I fell for the bait and purchased this product from the company directly and was extremely disappointed in the both the set-up (hose attached to base unit next to faucet) and the flavor of the "filtered" water (it tasted like the plastic hose). [...] Aquasana AQ-4000 works, but overpriced. buy a basic standard 10" housing instead, have a plethora of filters available for better price and faster flow. and possibly NSF approved.. It leaks and causes water damage - not worth it!! I bought an Aquasana 4000 last year. It worked fine for the first 6 months. After changing the filter for the first time, the system began to weep water. Theres some design flaw issues. The case is made out of a very soft plastic which deforms when unscrewing and rescrewing the caps, and the in and out water lines are sealed by a compression fitting with a brass ring, which also after some movement will distort the plastic around it and will enver seal right again. The O rings which seal in the filters are thin and flimsy and will come out of the grove even when the grease is applied. It took some dexity and fidgeting to get the system to finally not weep, and I checked it for several weeks and it looked like it was was ok. I went to change the filter again, and discovered had been weeping again, and from the amount of damage to the underlayment and back of the cabinet, the dry wall, it looks like it has been going on for several months. Now Im looking at about about $1,000 worth of water damage. Needless to say, it may filter the water well, but the design and cheap materials used in the case are not worth the damage it will do to the house when it leaks - and it will leak. one should avoid this unit until they redesign it and use better materials in its manufacture. Aquasana- so far, so good! After years of buying bottled water at the market, I finally decided to purchase a water filtration system to cut costs and reduce plastic recycling. Through research and reading all the reviews, I opted for the AQ-4000. Although the unit does come completely assembled, I removed and then reinserted the two filter cartridges into their respective housings just to rate the difficulty of future replacements, and I found the procedure to be not difficult at all. Installation was made easy with the included small parts, and all parts fit together well. The filter system has been operating flawlessly up to this point in time (about a month now). As for the taste of the water, it is virtually bland, which indicates that the filters are doing their job. As another reviewer noted, this unit is not much on style, but seems to perform its tasks quite admirably, and I am very satisfied with the purchase. Replacement filters arent cheap, and they need to be changed about twice a year, but its still less than buying bottled water at the store, and with the AQ-4000 you can have the confidence in knowing that you really are getting filtered water. One note: I tie-wrapped the inlet/outlet tubes to the kitchen faucet so that they wouldnt flop around whenever you rotated the faucet from one side of the sink to the other. Hope this review has been helpful. Peace. Aesthetically unappealing Looks better in the advertisement, but when you hook it up in your home it just doesnt look nice. Been using for years! For health reasons, my husband and I were concerned about water quality. We chose Aqusana primarily because of the many awards they have won over the many years theyve been in business (Consumer Digest, Inc 500, etc). When we lived in the city, we started out using the counter-top system and absolutely loved it! Easy to install, use, and maintain. Our drinking water was always super! Far better than any other water filters as it is dual-carbon filtered/purified and fresh from the tap. After moving to the country, we then upgraded to the under-the-counter system which we loved even more! As well, Aquasanas shower filter is one of the best health-decisions we ever made! For years, I must say that weve been spoiled by absolutely the best water on the planet!! Cheap construction After using a water filter from another company for about 15 years with no problems, I switched to the Aquanana because I could no longer find filters for my other unit. Immediately I had problems with the Aquasana. The two screw-on bases holding the filters in to the main housing use very thin ring gaskets and are extremely sensitive to the amount of pressure used to tighten the bases in place. After some fiddling I managed to make them somewhat leak proof. They still leaked water but not enough to really bother me. I was more concerned with the quality of the water which had received good reviews elsewhere from lab tests and which, I have to say, I have no problems with whatsoever. Unlike other people here, mine kept together pretty well until the first filter change. This time no matter what I did I couldnt get one of the bases to stop leaking. Inspecting the gasket I discovered that it had developed a kink in it so after trying to smooth it out somewhat, I packed it back in and tightened the base as well as I could to the point where the least amount of water leaked out. Over the next several months, the leak gradually got worse and I had to fiddle with the base to try to lessen the flow. This happened several times until, as one reviewer described, the pressure inside the filter unit blew out the base altogether. Removing the base, I discovered that the treads had broken. I would seriously advise against buying this filter unit as the construction is extremely cheap. The plastic used in the unit seems to become brittle relatively quickly and the two gaskets used in the bases are unreliable. This is a shame because I had no issues with the water that this unit produced. If you decide to purchase this unit, I would advise you to be extremely careful when tightening the two base plugs as they are extremely sensitive. A Good Filter at a Good Price I bought the Aquasana after a friend recommended it. Hes has his for about a year, we have had ours for about six months, and we are totally happy with it. To the reviewer who talked about how long it takes to fill the sink, that is not how we use it. We only turn the filter on to filter the water we drink and cook with. Thats why you can turn the filter on and off, so that for washing dishes you use the tap at full strength. I also dont run hot water through the filter, because this is water thats been in your water heater and would be filled with rust and silt, which I would think would decrease the life of the filter. This filter is very reasonably priced, and is only supposed to filter your drinking water, which it does very well. We ordered the replacement filter at the recommended time and are using the product according to the manufacturers recommendation, and it is working just fine. For the money, you cant beat it! Happy Customers My husband and I have just bought the Aquasana countertop filter and we are very pleased. The filter casing is less obtrusive and takes less space on the counter than the previous system we used. The water tastes very pure--probably better than any we have tasted. The glass containers are another plus. The faucet configuration, with the little knob on the side, is more convenient than the style of our previous system. We have found customer service to be friendly and helpful. We have ordered the shower filters and expect that these will be top-notch as well. Goodbye chemicals! Great filter, but cheap and flimsy construction Ive had this product for about a year. It worked great till it was time to replace the filters. Its very hard to remove the catridge as it tends to get stuck. Also, the housing cracked after a year, and started leaking water. After reading that others have had this problem as well, I decided to purchase a different filtration system. Aquasana water systems review After moving to Florida I soon discovered the water tasted awful and is so hard. After one year I soon realized how much money I was spending on bottled water and the waste these bottles are creating in our landfills. A friend of mine recommended Aquasana water filtering systems, trusting her opinion I called the company. I have had the countertop system as well as the shower system for almost 2 years. The water is delicious, I work nights on my feet, I cant wait to get home in the mornings to take a shower. My hair and skin so so soft, it is so relaxing, I love my shower. Great Tasting Water for Great Price My husband and I have had an Aquasana AQ 4000 water filter for the last 4 years. The water for life program offers an economical and enviromentaly friendly solution to expensive and wasteful bottled water. Further more, it taastes better, and is better than bottled water. Another benefit of the water for life program is that every time weve needed a new piece for our system, we have recieved them without question or delay, and we recieve new filters without fail every 6 months. This filtrations system is worth every penny. fantastic product I have owned the system over a year and cant say enough about it. It is very reasonably priced and easy to use. Be careful no to overtighten the filters, but other than that, it is maintenance-free and works seamlessly with any faucet. This is a great product overall If youre looking for a water-filter, I dont think that you can do better than this one for price and quality overall. Ive had this counter-top unit for over 3 years, and Ive been very happy with it, in terms of price and quality. It beats any of the filters you can buy at Wal-Mart or Target, and is easily more convenient than buying bottled water or taking empty bottles to your local filtering machine. Its one downfall so far, as has been addressed by many other reviewers, is the case-- not the filters themselves. In three years, Ive had mine crack open three times due to water pressure. Its an inconvenience, but even this, Im inclined to overlook for the following three reasons: (1) their customer service is outstanding. Each time, I reported to them what happened, and they sent me a new case for free without even shipping charges. (2) they apparently have re-modeled their case due to other customer complaints. Im hoping that the new one holds longer than a year (If it does, Ill come back and change my 4-stars to 5-stars); (3) and in the end, its just so convenient and of good quality, that there really isnt an alternative. filters are a PAIN to replace This system is good at filtering much more than the Brita etc (supposedly anyway) but the filters are bloody hard to replace. They really last about 2-4 months (NOT 8) bc the water gets gamey after that, and then getting the holding cases to "loosen" is near to impossible. I dont have a hex head wrench on hand in the first place. The little plastic turning paddles just crack off. This is the 3rd FULL SYSTEM Ive bought bc buying replacement filters is useless - I beat number 2 to death w a hammer a few minutes ago in utter frustration, I confess. If you want this system, plan on replacing the whole counter module quarterly, ie plan on $400/yr to be the real cost of it. Wonderful Customer Support As I have had my aquasana countertop water filter for about three years, the housing has cracked and we have just received a new one with no problem. I do agree with some of the reviews that the filters are difficult to put in, but the water taste is just great. Hats off to the customer service person I dealt with. He was exceptional. Not ready for primetime My wife and I bought an Aquasana water filtering system a few months ago and I must say that it has not been a good experience. In fact since then I have decided to avoid anything from Aquasana. The device is not well made. Changing the filters is very difficult because the plastic nut that must be loosened and tightened is hard to grasp and tends to strip. After two filter changes our unit is useless because of this cheaply made soft plastic nut. Within a few weeks the unit leaks and the shut off valve stops working automatically. It sticks in the open position and must be closed manually. Recently we purchased another system from Puritec and have been much happier with it and with the service that the company provides. Piece of Junk! Don't Waste Your Money! The Aquasana AQ-4000 is a very poorly designed piece of plastic that will not last. It was very difficult installing this water filtration system, but with persistence I managed to make it work. However, when it came time to change the water filters (in six months), it was virtually impossible due to the shoddy design. The twist covers were very, very difficult to twist off and only after a long period was I able to take both water filter covers off (and in the process breaking one cover from strenuous turning). Then, trying to get the filters out was no easy feat and ultimately I could not get one out since it was stuck at the other end and would not budge. Its not a product that holds up long term, and I would strongly recommend that you purchase something that will last longer than six months. The design is as bad as it gets, and customer service is of no use whatsoever. Dont buy it, and save yourself the headaches I had to go through. Too many problems Filters are much more difficult to install than I think they should be, unit consistently breaks or has a problem every few months. The white plastic filter housing has broken twice (see photo) and Ive had to replace the faucet/dispenser at least once because it constantly dripped or even poured. I am now on hold to get another part since I am a "Water 4 Life" subscriber for about $100 year - which includes two filter changes and warranty. Eventually I will probably spend the time and money to get a better unit. Maybe I am a fool Maybe I am a fool for ordering another one of these units. We have had ours for over a year and about 3 weeks ago noticed a small crack where a little water leaks. Of course the crack has gotton much bigger and we have to replace it. I decided to try it one more time. I hate buying water at the store. I do think we contributed to the crack as I did use too much water pressure at times and sometimes allowed hot water to run through it. This time I am going to be more careful with the unit. If the new one cracks within the next year its time to look into another product. Other than the crack, I have loved having this. Best filter I've ever used! Ive used a lot of water filters in the past few years...and found that most of them are junk. Ive been using Aquasana for about a year now and absolutely love it! Its super easy to use and maintain and the water is the best tasting Ive ever had. They even have some nice glass bottles to keep your water in which makes it taste even better. I just bought a couple more for Christmas presents for my kids. Good Filter, BAD Housing !!! Totally bummed. Woke up this morning to a flooded kitchen. The seam on the housing broke. The quality of the water is great but its back to my GE undersink filter I took out to put this POS in. Wish I had seen the reviews from others with the same experience before I decided to change to this system. DO NOT put this in a place that could cause damage if it ruptures. Aquasana Pure Drinking Water System This system was very easy to install. The company stands by its product. I am very happy with my water filter. Don't waste your money I bought this water filter because it has great specs, especially for the price and for being a countertop filter. Admittedly, the water tastes great. The housing is so sensitive that you can only run water through it at and incredibly low pressure to keep it from bursting. We do our best, but it is so inconvenient and if you have a household of a few people, somebody is sure to not care and run it through at a normal pressure, which is way too much for this filter. After the first one burst, I dumbly bought another one thinking that we could just be more careful this time. After a few months the second one just burst. It was while I was running the water this time, so I know I was running it on a very low pressure. Im completely disappointed. Why they dont fix this problem after so many people have complained (read reviews everywhere), I dont know. If you live alone and have a lot of time and patience to fill your glass very very slowly, then this is the perfect filter for you. Great Inexpensive Water I installed the Aquasana water filtration system a few months ago. Our family absolutely loves it. It is like getting spring water from the tap (We think it actually tastes better than spring water). The under sink filtration kit worked great. You can either use the existing sprayer hose hole in your sink or drill a new one. I purchased a hole saw from Lowes to cut through my stainless steal sink. I got one of the white ones (1 inch) made for metal. We are very happy with the unit. There are simple instructions for replacing the filters so I doubt that will be a problem. The complete install took about an hour. I highly recommend the system. Great Inexpensive Water I installed the Aquasana water filtration system a few months ago. Our family absolutely loves it. I would not recommend this inferior piece of equipment! Good water - bad cust support we had this filter for 5 months. during that time the faucet valve and plastic filter housing broke. Great little water filter I bought the sink top version and then bought the undersink mount kit and the brushed nickel faucet to go with my new kitchen faucet set. Best move EVER!
